8 Making sound environmental choices is not only the responsible thing to do; it s the right thing to do. Since opening in 1989 we have been an industry leader in the green movement and are continuously looking for ways to minimize the impact of large events on the environment. 80% of waste generated at the center was diverted from landfills in ,790 TONS of materials were recycled in TONS of non-edible food was composted in ENVIRONMENTAL PURCHASING Fruits, vegetables, olive oils and seafood are purchased from local farms and suppliers that are within a 100-mile radius, as supply and season allows TONS of untouched food was donated to the San Diego Rescue Mission in % of cardboard that came through the facility was recycled. 1,208 light fixtures were converted to LEDs in the exhibit hall. TRANSPORTATION is home to hotels, restaurants, retail shops and attractions all within walking distance of the convention center, eliminating the need to drive when meeting downtown. 111 W.
