Meals - L, D DAY 2 PONT DU GARD Daily Mileage - 28 miles Riding Terrain - Rolling hills Hotel - See Day 1 Meals - B DAY 3 CÔTES DU VENTOUX Daily Mileage - 40 miles Riding Terrain - Rolling hills Hotel - Château de Mazan Location: Mazan Duration: 2 Nights Website: www. chateaudemazan.com Today is another incredible day of biking and exploring as we cross the Rhone River. Start your day with a breakfast of fresh croissants, pain au chocolate and beignets before taking a 30-minute shuttle to the start of our ride, the majestic and awe-inspiring Pont du Gard. This piece of Roman architecture was built in 19 BC to carry water from nearby towns. We ll spin past vineyards and fortress villages as we head back to Avignon and stopping for lunch in Tavel, the place where French rosé wine was invented. We ll have a walking tour with a local guide of the squares and shops that have made Avignon a center of commerce for so long. This evening, you re free to explore and discover a unique corner of Avignon. Today s ride takes us along the beautiful grounds knows as the Côtes du Ventoux, where exceptional wines grow with the impressive mountain as a backdrop. We ll pass through the wine mecca of Châteauneuf-du- Pape, a marvelous hill town constructed in the medieval times. With the priest s house in the center, it s the spiritual heart of the village. We ll also have a wine tasting here. Our ride today meanders through the Provençal countryside and takes us on the road less traveled via the national velo routes. Tonight s dinner is a memorable experience at our hotel as we watch the sunset with glasses of crisp rosé in hand. Nestled at the foot of the legendary Mt. Ventoux, the 4-star Château de Mazan is situated in the charming village of Mazan in the heart of Provence. The hotel features an outdoor pool, landscaped garden, a gourmet restaurant, a bar and a lounge. Ciclismo Classico info@ciclismoclassico.com 3
4 DAY 4 LE MONT VENTOUX Daily Mileage - 40 miles Riding Terrain - Rolling hills and one big hill for the extra loopers Hotel - See Day 3 DAY 5 GORGES DE LA NESQUE AND GORDES Daily Mileage - 41 miles Riding Terrain - Rolling, hilly Hotel - La Bastide de Gordes Location: Gordes Duration: 1 Night Website: Before us stands the impressive Mt. Ventoux a nearly 6,300-foot mountain. Today s extra loop will take you up to the top (by bike!), while those who ride the regular loop will enjoy time down in the valley with succulent reds from the iconic wine areas of Gigondas, Vacqueras and Beaumes de Venise. Tonight we ll have dinner at L oulo in Mazan, accompanied by a cooking demonstration. We ll also visit the Roman Centre of Vaison-la-Romaine with its myriad of historic sites. The mountain s name comes, appropriately, from the strength of the Mistral at the top. For those who attempt the ride, make sure you bring plenty of rain and cold-weather gear: even in the hottest of Provençal temperatures, the top of Ventoux can get quite cold. If you haven t heard of the Georges de la Nesque before today s ride, you certainly won t ever forget them after cycling through them. With Mont Ventoux providing a impressive backdrop for the whole day, you ll ride on one of the most stunning cycling roads in France. Breathtaking views, low traffic volume and smooth roads make this a mecca for cyclists across Europe. Continue through the exquisite French countryside, past village markets, and colorful fields into the Alpilles foothills. Lunch will be on your own today in the gorgeous town of Monieux at the Les Lavandes restaurant. Dinner will be at our hotel tonight. An ancestral castle built on the edge of a cliff overlooking one of the most beautiful villages in France, La Bastide de Gordes stands still overlooking the magical landscape of the Luberon. DAY 6 ST. RÉMY DE PROVENCE Daily Mileage - 33 miles Riding Terrain - Rolling and flat Hotel - Hôtel de l Image Location: St. Rémy Duration: 2 Nights Website: Warm croissants and beurre-salé start the morning accompanied by hot coffee and the sun s rays. Today we ll ride to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence passing by Fontaine de Vaucluse and Cavaillon, home of the Charentais melon. We ll arrive in Saint-Rémy for lunch, where the open markets and coffee shops are also the perfect place for a great bargain and a cool pastis or panaché in the early afternoon. We ll have a walking tour of Saint Paul de Mausole where van Gogh spent the latter period of his life. With the help of our local guide, we ll get a real sense of what inspired and motivated the artist. After dinner, we ll stroll along the central square. Dinner will be at the hotel tonight. Nestled in the heart of the Alpilles and Provence, the Hôtel de l Image is a 4-star accommodation. Here, you ll find a magnificent park with a swimming pool, a gourmet restaurant and a spa. During the course or the day you ll get a chance to visit the incredibly well-preserved Greco-Roman site of Glanum. We ll also visit an olive oil mill and have an olive tasting there. We ll then have a Ciclismo picnic lunch at the mill. Dinner will be at L Aile ou la Cuisse restaurant in St. Remy.
