The Cathedral district discovery route
The cathedral district was, until the 19th century, an island linked to the rest of the city by various bridges. Through their names, the Pont-d Avroy and Pont-d Île streets allude to this now disappeared past (pont means bridge in French). Next to the cathedral, the district is renowned for its many shops, the Carré, the Forum, the church of Saint-Jacques, the Lemonnier passage shopping gallery and a wealth of other points of interest that this itinerary invites you to discover Saint Paul Cathedral and its Treasure Jean Del Cour Monument Church Saint-Jacques Vertbois The Chiroux complex University of Liège Grand Poste (former post office) Collegiate church Saint-Denis César Franck Monument Théâtre royal Opéra royal de Wallonie Grétry Statue Cinema Sauvenière Cité Miroir Collegiate church Saint-Jean-l Évangéliste Le Carré Forum Cinema Churchill Passage Lemonnier Fountain of the Virgin Mary Pictures : Liège Tourist Office HOCHEPO RTE DES REMPARTS THIER DE LA FONTAINE FIRQUET LAMBERT LE BEGUE DES BEGUINAGES BEE DE CHEPORTE DE L ACADEMIE N NE FON AGIMONT DES BEGARDS MONTAGNE SAINTE DE L DES ANGLAIS 'ACADEMIE BOULEVARD DE LA SAUVENIERE UE SUR LA FONTAINE HEL UTXHIEL LEON MIGNON DES BOULEVARD DE LA SAUVENIERE URBANISTES CARLIER DARCHIS DARCHIS DE BRUXELLES DES MONT SAINT MARTIN ST HUBERT 14 Collégiale Saint-Jean l'evangéliste 13 Cité Miroir R. 3 1. Saint Paul Cathedral and its Treasure A former collegiate church founded in 966, it became a cathedral in 1803 as a replacement for the former Notre-Dame & Saint- Lambert cathedral destroyed during the Revolution. The current gothic style edifice was rebuilt between the 13th century and the start of the 15th century. Certain additions, such as the tower, date back to the 19th century. The spire of the tower houses a set of 49 bells which for the most part came from Notre-Dame & Saint-Lambert. From April to September, the set of bells comes to life each Wednesday from to Many inquisitive passers-by make a deliberate detour to the square in order to hear and identify the day s theme. In the cloisters, the Treasure of the cathedral includes an exceptional collection of artworks that originate, for the most part, from the former Notre-Dame & Saint-Lambert cathedral. Cathedral: open every day from 8 am to 5 pm. The Treasure: open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 2 to 5 pm. 2. Jean Del Cour Monument 3. Church Saint-Jacques Reclining Christ by Jean Del Cour (17th century) the 16th, 20th and 21st century stained-glass windows The Genius of Evil by Guillaume Geefs the hunting of Saint Lambert (19th century) 17th century paintings, In the middle of the place Saint-Paul square stands a monument. Created by Paul Du Bois in 1911, a bust depicts the baroque sculptor Jean Del Cour. A major artist from Liège, Jean Del Cour was born in Hamoir in Like many artists, he left for Rome to pursue his apprenticeship. According to local lore in Liège, he is said to have been the pupil of Bernini during his stay in Italy. On returning to Liège, he produced many commissions that still adorn the churches and streets of Liège. Del Cour is also said to have been contacted by Vauban to work on a statue of Louis XIV. The sculptor from Liège is thought to have refused due to his advanced age and infirmity. He died in Liège in The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Jacques was founded in The remains of the crypt are all that remains of the primitive Romanesque church. The Romanesque forepart dates from the second half of the 12th century; the choir and nave were rebuilt in 1514 and 1538 in a flamboyant gothic style; the Renaissance doorway dates back to The church can be considered as one of the most beautiful in the country thanks to its architecture and interior decoration. April > October from Tusday to Saturday from 10 >12 am and from 2 > 4:30 pm. 4. Vertbois 5. Les Chiroux complex 6. University of Liège the stained-glass windows ( ) 14th century stalls the painted vault the organ case (1600) baroque statues sculpted by Jean Del Cour (late 17th century),... The current building was built by Jean-Ernest de Surlet- Chokier at the start of the 18th century. It is made up of two wings separated by a chapel. Originally, Vertbois was intended for the irremediable and for repentant girls. After the Revolution, the buildings were put to a variety of uses. In 1950, following the destruction during the Second World War, the left wing was completely rebuilt. Lastly, in the 1990 s, the buildings were restored in order to house Walloon institutions. The Chiroux complex was built in the 1960 s and 1970 s. It is a good illustration of the architectural intentions of this era, which aimed to modernise the city and create a system of major roads. In this complex, two particular elements stand out: the Kennedy Tower and the Chiroux Rotunda. The Chiroux library (the biggest in Wallonia), offices and a cultural centre are located in this rotunda. Covered with limestone cladding, it is reminiscent of a medieval fort. As for the 85-metre high Kennedy Tower, like the bridge at its foot, it is named after the former American president John-Fitzgerald Kennedy, the bridge receiving this official moniker in Founded in 1817 by the Dutch King Willem I, the University of Liège is the accomplishment of a long-standing intellectual tradition that dates back to the principality of Liège s origins. From the 1950 s onwards, all the faculties progressively migrated to the Sart-Tilman site in upper Liège. Only the administrative departments, education authority and faculty of philosophy and arts are still present in the city centre buildings. On place du 20-Août, the main entrance to the university was built at the end of the 19th century. Four statues sit on top of it, representing philosophy, law, mathematics and medicine. As for the two statues in the niches, one is an allegory of the arts and the other of studying.
7. Grand Post (former post office) 8. Collegiate church Saint-Denis 9. César Franck Monument Completed in 1901, the central post office was built according to the blueprints designed by architect Edmond Jamar in a neo-gothic style. For the building s exterior, the architect drew inspiration from the first court of the Prince-Bishops palace. The façades are decorated by many elements. The six big statues depict the mayors of the 15th and 16th centuries, whilst the nine small statues portray personnel from the post office from the same era. Lastly, the building bears many coats of arms, related to the principality of Liège and kingdom of Belgium. This collegiate church was founded in 987 under the reign of the Prince-Bishop Notger. Destroyed by lightning in 1003, it was rebuilt several years later. The tower was built in the 11th century and at the start of the 12th century. As the centuries passed, stylistic modifications were made to the church. Today, it is made up of a Romanesque style tower and nave, a gothic choir (from the 15th century) and a baroque (17th century) as well as rococo (18th century) interior. open every day from 10 am > 5 pm. alter-piece of the Passion and life of Saint Denis of Paris ( ) and the sections painted by Lambert Lombard the 16th century organ case, statues from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, At the corner of rue de la Régence and rue de l'université, the monument dedicated to César Franck is evocative of an organ pipe. Created by Marianne Baibay, it was inaugurated in 1990, one hundred years after Franck s death. Born in Liège in 1822, César Franck was discovered at a very young age thanks to his talent and gained entry to the Paris music academy at the age of 15 years. Having graduated with several awards, the young musician performed in several select venues. Furthermore, he received a very flattering letter from the Belgian king Léopold I. Appointed as a professor of organ music in 1872 at the Paris music academy, Franck had a major influence on the music of his time. An eminent composer and organist, he bequeathed a number of works, which pay special witness to his genius, to the city. 10. Théâtre royal Opéra royal de Wallonie Before construction of the Royal Theatre from 1818 to 1820, a former Dominican convent occupied this location. On construction of the theatre, the columns of the Carthusian monks former church were re-used and incorporated into the façade of the building. In 1930, for the World Fair in Liège, a pediment was installed on the façade. Created by Oscar Berchmans, it depicts deities from the Antiquity associated with the arts: Apollo, Athena and Aphrodite. Today, the building plays host to the Royal Opera of Wallonia. From 2009 to 2012, it underwent interior and exterior renovation. The modern section overlooking the theatre dates from this renovation. 11. Grétry Statue 12. Cinema Sauvenière The statue of André Grétry is the work of Guillaume Geefs. Made of bronze, it was initially installed in 1842 on place du 20-Août. It was only twenty years after that it was moved to its location in front of the Royal Theatre. Although the composer was buried in Paris, in the Père-Lachaise cemetery, his heart features in the base of this statue. Whilst the name of Grétry is less well-known today, in his time he was a composer very much in vogue. Having played at the court of the French king, he rubbed shoulders with Rousseau and Voltaire, the latter of whom dedicated a quatrain to him, concerning one of his works which was not well received by the court: The court jeered at your talents Paris applauded your wonders Grétry, the ears of the Great Are often great ears. The Cinema Sauvenière, a striking modern building, boasts four projection rooms, a brasserie and an exhibition zone. Erected in 2008, it has since been awarded four architecture prizes including the City of Liège urban planning prize (in 2009) and the Belgian prize for architecture (also in 2009). It is also included in the list of 40 striking buildings in 21st century Belgian architecture. The cinema proposes a wide range of films, many of which are projected in their original version.
13. Cité Miroir Building started on the Sauvenière Public Baths and Spa in in It is a symbol of the Belgian modernist style of the interwar period. Inaugurated in 1942, during German occupation, the baths remained open until In 2014, they had new life breathed into them when they were designated to house the Cité Miroir. It is now a cultural centre, dedicated to history, dialogue between cultures and citizenship. It proposes temporary and permanent exhibitions. The grand hall was preserved as part of the restoration. It measures 80 metres long and is occupied by two pools which are used as exhibition spaces. Open during the week from 9 am to 6 pm. On the weekend from 10 am to 6 pm. 14. Collegiate church Saint-Jean-l Évangéliste The Saint John the Evangelist collegiate church was founded in approximately 980 by the first Prince-Bishop Notger. The church s plans were inspired by the Palatine chapel of Charlemagne in Aachen. Notger was buried here. The edifice stood until 1754, at which point it was demolished to be replaced by the current building. Only the tower, with its set of 35 bells, dates back to the Romanesque period. The 16th and 18th century cloister contains many ancient tombstones, some of which date back to the 15th century. In Liège, the mystery of the Prince-bishop s final resting place still remains. Open mid-june > mid-september, Tuesday > Saturday from 10 to 12 am and from 2 to 5:30 pm. Sedes Sapentiae, statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint John (from the beginning of the 13th century), gothic style cloister, vestiges of Notger s cenotaph, the 18th century interior, 15. Le Carré In this old district of the city, at number 10 rue d Amay, a luxurious noble abode can be seen, dating back to the 16th century and is said to have belonged to the Lord of Amay. Le Carré is today renowned for its night-life. Over the last few years, the separation between day-life and night-life in the district has become increasingly marked. Starting from the boulevard de la Sauvenière, visitors enter the nocturnal section with its bars, whilst on approaching the cathedral they will come across its many boutiques. 16. Forum The Forum is a concert hall built in Its Art deco architectural style on its own is worth the detour. Inside, the walls and ceilings are adorned with painted staffs. They combine classic style ornaments such as decorative scenes, as well as geometrical and floral patterns, all in Art deco style. Since it was opened, singers, actors and humourists have graced its stage to the great delight of the spectators. 17. Cinema Churchill Formerly home to the Forum brasserie, this building was transformed into a cinema in 1947, and took on the name of Churchill. The façade is remarkable thanks to its stained-glass window and carved floral decorations. As a whole, it is again a fine example of Art deco style. On heading to the next point, it is possible to see two emblems adorning the façades. The first, at 22 rue du Potd Or, gave its name to the street. The second is located at 14 rue Pont-d île. On this emblem, the following inscription can be read: Au Cigne 1690.
18. Passage Lemonnier Built by the architect Louis-Désiré Lemonnier in 1839, the passage bearing his name is, at 160 metres in length and 4 metres wide, the first major covered gallery in Belgium. It boasts approximately fifty shops. In 1937, it was renovated in Art deco style by the architect Henri Snyers. In the rotunda, two deities from the Antiquity keep watch: Athena and Hermes. Not far from there, in rue Lulaydes-Fèbres, the Trocadéro concert hall can be recognised thanks to its Art deco style. As its façade and name suggest, the Trocadéro is the most Parisian of the cabarets in Liège. 86 ha Just a Step from the city centre more than 60 historical monuments 13 km walking paths The Hillside of the Citadel 19. Fountain of the Virgin Mary More often called the Fountain of the Lions, the Fountain of the Virgin Mary has not always been situated at this location. Initially built in marble, it was erected at the end of the 17th century on the current site of the cathedral and adorned by a statue of the Virgin Mary and Child, made in 1696 by Jean Del Cour. In 1854, it was rebuilt at its current location by the architect from Liège, Julien-Étienne Rémont, who preferred granite to marble. in AU the GUIDE MICHELIN VERT green MICHELIN guide A map with commentary is available in the Tourist Office at 13 Quai de la Goffe A green lung located near the Historic Centre of the city, the hillside of the Citadelle provides wonderful views over Liège and the valley of the River Meuse. Combining nature and heritage, it contains several of the city s emblematic monuments. From the Montagne de Bueren stairway (374 steps), to the remains of the 13thcentury city walls, plus delightful smells from the trees, the hillside of the Citadel conceals a whole of treasures to discover... Five signposted walks have been created for visitors to move around the site, which has been awarded 3 stars by the Michelin Green Guide.
