NT U LA of the city's elites. An emblematic monument of the neighbourhood, the collegiate church of aint-martin is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Also called Publémont, from the Latin Publicus Mons (public mountain), the quarter has conserved secret places such as Thier-de-la-Fontaine, an old street where some remains of fortifications are still visible. 9 J. Provincial palace Built between 1849 and 1853 to a design by the architect Jean-Charles elsaux, it is one of the first neo-gothic buildings in Liège. ts style is directly inspired by the two courtyards of the Palace of the Bishop Princes, built in the 16 th century by Érard de La Marck. The façade is decorated with 60 coats of arms, 42 statues and 19 bas-reliefs that trace the history of Liège, the region and its principality from the War of the Gauls up to the 18 th century. 2. Footbridge of the Principality of Liège 3. Hôtel Torrentius The Hôtel Torrentius is a mansion that bears the name of its patron, Laevinus Torrentius. His real name was Liévain van der Beke, and he was Bishop of Antwerp from 1586 to The design of this house dates back to 1565 and has often been attributed to Lambert Lombard, a great 16 th - century artist from Liège. As shown by the façade, the building is a fine example of enaissance taste for ancient elements. t was refurbished between 1978 and 1981 by the architect Charles Vandenhove. This footbridge links the two annexes of the law courts, which were erected at the end of the last decade. ts name reminds us that Liège was the capital of an independent principality for more than 800 years (cc ). t offers a unique view of the façade of the provincial palace. 4. Around the choir A lane with a rich heritage runs around the western choir of the Holy Cross collegiate church. At the start on the left-hand side is a small building that served as a church until the 19th century. edicated to aint Nicholas and known as aint-nicolasaux-mouches, it was one of the smallest churches in the city. Not far from there, at no. 5, a small building conserves some beautiful Gothic openings. Over the door leading to the cloister, a sign decorated with a key is still visible. 5. Collegiate church of the Holy Cross Founded at the end of the 10 th century by Prince-Bishop Notger, only one wall section remains of this first construction. The eastern part - the belfry - was rebuilt in the late 12 th century and early 13 th and combines the oman and Gothic styles. Largely reconstructed in the 13 th century, the collegiate church s special features are its two choirs and three naves of almost equal height. estored in the 19 th century, when a second entrance was added to the right of the first one, aint-croix is well-known for its atypical silhouette. ue to restoration work going on, the collegiate church is not open often.

4 6. Hôtel de élys Longchamps and Hôtel des comtes de Méan A magnificent five-star hotel now occupies these two prestigious residences. The Hôtel de élys Longchamps is a fine 16 th -century building that has been almost redesigned in every century. With a gable and cubicle in the Gothic style, the façades have nevertheless conserved the appearance of a 16 th -century building. The Hôtel des Comtes de Méan, recognisable for its classic façades, bears the name of an illustrious family from Liège. The last Prince-Bishop of Liège, François-Antoine de Méan, was born into this family. 7. Private mansions A patrician street par excellence, Mont aint-martin has conserved several private mansions from the 16 th, 17 th and 18 th centuries as witness to the wealth of its residents. The Hôtel Van den teen de Jehay, whose oldest parts date back to the 16 th century, occupies numbers 29 to 39 in the street. This immense residence received visits from Napoleon, William and Leopold. A member of this powerful family, Charles van den teen de Jehay, was the Governor of the Province of Liège from 1832 to The old building is now divided into several properties. 8. aint-martin collegiate church as recognition of the first celebration of Corpus Christi there in the mid-10 th century. 9. Thier-de-la-Fontaine Founded around 965 by Bishop Éracle, who wanted to make a cathedral out of it, it was razed to the ground in 1316 during one of the many social conflicts Liège suffered in the Middle Ages. With the exception of the tower, built between the late 14 th and early 15 th centuries, the church was completely rebuilt in the 16 th century. Like many other churches in Liège, it was extensively restored in the 19 th century. n 1886, Pope Leon X granted the title of Basilica to aint-martin, Worth seeing: the five stained glass windows dating from 1527 the remains of the Blessed acrament chapel, etc. Overlooking the centre of Liège, Mount aint-martin has been surrounded by fortifications since the year 1000, giving it the appearance of a fortress. The fortifications were removed in the 19 th century, although several remains are still visible along Thier-de-la-Fontaine street. 5 11. Cité-Miroir The old swimming-pool of La auvenière is recognisable by its façade. Built between 1938 and 1942 in the modernist style by the architect Georges edoyard, it is now occupied by the Cité Miroir, an exhibition and debate centre. The entrance used to be on the boulevard but it has been changed to the other side of the building, on Place Xavier-Neujean. 12. Îlot aint-michel naugurated in 1999, the aint-michel islet includes shops, offices, residences and green spaces. ts name comes from a small church dedicated to aint Michael that no longer exists. The main feature of this town section is its roof gardens, linked by bridges. n summer, the vegetation dries and sometimes reveals them. 14. Hôtel de Bocholtz tanding next to Hôtel esoër de olières, this mansion was built in the second half of the 16 th century by Arnold de Bocholtz. The building is also marked by the spirit of the enaissance and combines brick, freestone and bluestone. The anchoring on the façade denotes that the gable was rebuilt in t is now occupied by a private business club that recently installed a contemporary sculpture by the artist Arne Quinze in front of the entrance. 13. Hôtel esoër de olières Built between 1555 and 1561, this mansion owes it names to the esoër de olières family, who occupied it from 1874 onwards. t is a magnificent example of the extension of the talian enaissance to Liège. With several oric columns and other decorative elements, the building links into the Ancient style. As with the Hôtel Torrentius, its design is attributed to Lambert Lombard. eriously damaged by fire in 1995, it was restored from 2000 to The round glass tower was added during the restoration work.

Combining nature and heritage, it contains several of the city s emblematic monuments. From the Montagne de Bueren stairway (374 steps), to the remains of the 13thcentury city walls, plus delightful smells from the trees, the hillside of the Citadel conceals a whole of treasures to discover... Five signposted walks have been created for visitors to move around the site, which has been awarded 3 stars by the Michelin Green Guide.
