The feast commemorates the shipwreck of St Paul on the Maltese Islands, an event which took place in 60 A and which is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. 13 Holy eek And Easter /04/2012 Around Malta and Gozo On Good Friday an air of solemnity can be felt all over the Islands as church-interiors are draped in black or purple and their bells are kept silent. On the evening of Good Friday some 18 parishes organise a procession with life-size statues depicting the Passion of the Christ. On Easter Sunday the mood change to a happier and festive one as people attend the various Easter processions. By Sunday the churches undergo a radical transformation, with the sombre drapes removed and bells ringing joyously. Malta and Gozo also marks Lent, Good Friday and Easter by seasonal food specialities only available in this period of the year, as well as through the abstinence of certain food. In fact the Maltese traditionally abstain from eating sweets and sometimes meat during Lent, especially on Good Friday. No visit to Malta at Easter would be complete without attending one or more of these celebrations. 14 Festa tal-festi /04/2012 Fleur-de-Lys Commemoration of the Award of the George Cross 2 15/04/2012 St George s Square, alletta In 1942 the Island Fortress of Malta was awarded the George Cross medal for the bravery and tenacity of its people. This event commemorates the awarding of the medal, with a military re-enactment and a vivid narration of the events leading to this honour being bestowed upon the whole nation. 1 Strawberry Fair 15/04/2012 Mġarr Throughout this event, a breathtaking amount of fresh strawberries are sold. A constant supply of freshly picked strawberries are ferried constantly to the main square of Mġarr throughout the day. Countless other products made with strawberries, ranging from delicious gateaux and cakes, to smoothies, milk-shakes, ice-cream waffles, pancakes, strawberry jams and also strawberry wine are available at this popular event. Open Air Fruit Festival 15/04/2012 Attard and Balzan All activities will be held around the village cores. There will be stalls selling locally made cakes, fruit and vegetables and delicacies made from fruit and vegetables. Thousands of pyrotechnic enthusiasts flock to watch this event each year. Qormi Spring Fest 21-22/04/2012 Qormi The Springfest is an event which brings together a large number of farmers, street hawkers and national associations connected with animal husbandry. The outcome is a veritable milieu of stalls displaying and selling agricultural produce. Seħer Il-Punent /04/2012 Għarb Gozo arious activities are held during the Seħer il-punent Festival, promoting the locality of Għarb, its culture, history, traditions and also sport. uring the festival, arts and crafts exhibitions are held with some of the works created by local artists in situ, further highlighting the artistic skills required. Typical Gozitan produce also features prominently in this event and one may take the opportunity to taste Gozitan cheese, local wine and other delicacies. 17 Malta International Fireworks Festival Special Edition 23/04/-01/05/2012 Main event in the Grand Harbour Area, alletta Held inside the Grand Harbour Area as well as in other locations. The Malta International Fireworks Festival (MIFF) will be held once again in and around Malta s majestic Grand Harbour, definitely the perfect setting for this event. Both local and foreign pyrotechnic companies will be participating in a competition that will confirm the best fireworks display world-wide. Following 11 previous editions, the MIFF is now recognised as one of the main events in Europe s pyrotechnic calendar. This year, the MIFF will be spread over a whole week of events. The grand finale display will be held on May 1 and will be presented by world renowned Parente Fireworks Company of Italy on the 1st of May. 17

23 Maltese Traditional Religious Feasts 1 June September 2012 arious localities Malta s main religious denomination is Roman Catholic, and hence religious celebrations are a core part of the Maltese events calendar. The months of June, July, August and September are full to bursting with parishes celebrating their respective patron saints. This is the time of year we fondly call the festa season. Every town and village celebrates in a similar manner, with both indoor religious functions and outdoor festivities. The latter are the more secular aspect of the feasts, with ground and air firework displays, band marches and revelry. Churches are decked out in the parishes finest: drapes, silver and all sorts of ornamentation dazzle the eye during the village festa. Processions with the patron saint statue meander through village streets decorated with lights and beautiful banners pavaljuni, accompanied by bands and devotees. Locals make sure that their homes are in best possible shape for this special occasion, as oftentimes the village festa brings guests and extended family to their doors. No summer in Malta is complete without a visit to one of these colourful, exuberant and yet holy celebrations. Last year s edition saw over a third of the Maltese population in eleven days. The build up for this year s edition is underway. The Fairs and Exhibitions Team are working full swing to prepare for this yearly event, surely an excellent opportunity to grab a bargain in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Xirka Rock /06/2012 Buskett Forrest, ingli The Xirka Rock live show will be held again this year on June 29 at a venue still to be confirmed. Malta s best rock singers and musicians have put together a live band to launch Xirka Rock. The band, surprisingly called Xirka Rock Band, is made up of members of Fakawi, KOI, Airport Impressions, Fire, Red Electrick, Forsaken and more. They will be playing the great rock classics we all know. Be ready to rock with Malta s best rock artists. L-Imnarja: Summer Folk Festival 1 29/06/2012 Rabat/Mdina/Buskett Gardens The origins of this festival date back to before the arrival of the Knights of St John in It acquired its name from the bonfires that used to light up the festivities in Mdina and Rabat. Today, the feast is marked by various events. On the eve, families and friends gather at Buskett Gardens, Malta s largest woodland area, for a picnic which normally carries on into the night. The traditional rabbit dish and wine are at the top of the day s menu, accompanied by the singing and music of local folk bands. The morning after, the day of the feast proper, the celebrations continue with an agricultural show, followed by bareback horse and donkey races at Saqqajja Hill, just below Mdina. 25

27 Isle of MT Malta Special 2012 last week of June Floriana and other venues The Isle of MT Concert is the apex of a week-long festival of live music. The annual Isle of MT music event in Malta is an MT Networks International (MTNI) production. A world class line up of artistes will play in a free live concert on the Granaries in Floriana in front of a crowd which annually tops the 50,000 mark. Once again this promises to be one of the summer s must-see musical events. The Isle of MT Malta is unique in offering young people across Europe an exclusive opportunity to experience some of the world s best new and established artistes here in Malta, and for free. This event has become an important annual destination for music lovers. Previous attractions included Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, N*E*R*, One Republic, Maroon 5, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, Kid Rock, avid Guetta, Metro Station, Snoop ogg, and LMFAO amongst others. 27
28 Malta Arts Festival 01-18/07/2012 alletta & Floriana The Malta Arts Festival comprises a wide variety of art forms, including theatre, dance, music and painting. Performances are staged in various venues in alletta and Floriana. Other venues in the capital include the Mediterranean Conference Centre, the MITP Theatre and the St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity. Joseph Calleja Concert 2 Begining of July 2012 (TBC) Granaries, Floriana The International and acclaimed Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja last year delighted thousands of people on the granaries in a concert that featured the best of classical music. In 2011, the Maltese star was accompanied by New Zealand soprano Hayley estenra and Italian legend Lucio alla. This year, NNG promotions will once again present the tenor s magical voice by confrming yet another unforgettable concert at the Granaries in Floriana. More information about the accompanying international guest will be out very soon. The festival naturally celebrates Malta s famous brews, whilst allowing the crowds to appreciate a wide array of immensely talented local musicians. Traditional Fjakkolata 11-12/08/2012 Xlendi, Gozo Feast of St. Gaetan 1 12/08/2012 Ħamrun The St. Gaetan feast in Ħamrun is widely regarded as the signature event for the much acclaimed Marċ tal-brijju (or festive march) which is held on the day of the feast, starting in mid-morning and ending in the afternoon. The rivalry that exists between Ħamrun s two main band clubs makes this celebration one of the most exciting feasts in Malta and Gozo. Feast of The Assumption of Our Lady (Santa Marija) 15/08/2012 arious towns and villages The Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady (Santa Marija) is considered to be the pinnacle of the festa season. Celebrated in various towns and villages in Malta and Gozo this feast is also a Public Holiday. Iljieli Mellieħin 17-19/08/2012 Around Mellieħa Iljieli Melliħin have become part of the local cultural calendar and a mark of quality with the experience gained during the years. Artists exhibiting and working on paintings as well as fret work (arkett), lace making and other sorts of projects are just some of the highlights of this year s edition. Join the Mellieha community to celebrate one of the most picturesque localities in the Maltese Islands. The main focus is religious, though the secular aspect increases year on year. Many villages have street decorations as well as large, life-size cribs. Many villages host crib exhibitions, with cribs of all sizes and materials on display, with the ever- increasing popularity of mechanical cribs making these exhibitions a unique experience. The high point of the Christmas season is definitely midnight mass with the traditional sermon recited by a young child. Christmas fairs are increasing in popularity and here one can enjoy festive music, food and entertainment for all the family. The stretch of land known locally as Ta Passi is slowly changed into a large living crib, where horses turn mills, villagers go about their jobs, shepherds inhabit caves, animals roam in enclosed spaces and a poor unknown couple tend their newly-born in a stable. Once there, a formal ceremony takes place in which sentries providing ceremonial guard duties at important institutions are relieved by a new batch of sentries.
