Honfleur: the historic port and the old town After a coach journey of around 30 minutes we will reach Honfleur, a picturesque fishing town at the mouth of the Seine that dates back to the 13th century and is still perfectly preserved today. 9 Le Havre MONT SAINT-MICHEL We explore Mont Saint-Michel, a "wonder of the West" and masterpiece of medieval religious architecture, as well as an exceptional vantage point for admiring the spectacle of the tides which have the biggest height difference in the whole of France. Mont Saint-Michel Porte de Bavole, Grand Rue and village Walls and Benedictine abbey On this excursion we spend the whole day at Mont Saint-Michel, a rocky island surrounded by a magnificent bay known as the "wonder of the West" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since Visits to the island are spectacular at any time of year thanks to its configuration, the rich history of the abbey and the beauty of its architecture. The little island, with a circumference of around 1 km, reaches a height of 80 metres and is connected to the bay via a paved road built in 1879 which is submerged at high tide. The area is known for its alternating tides, causing changes to the sandbars that surround the mount. Here the movement of the tides is the highest in the whole of France and the difference between high and low tide can be over 12 metres. We will begin our visit at the fortified entrance, the Porte de Bavole built by Gabriel du Puy in 1590, and continue along the Grand Rue, a steep road that comes to life in the summer with souvenir shops and restaurants and crosses the picturesque village towards the abbey, church and cloister. We will also visit the walls along a route that offers enchanting views of the bay and the abbey gardens. We arrive at the Abbey which dates back to the 8th century when the Archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, bishop of Avranches, telling him to build a church on the rock. The bishop founded an oratory on the island, then known as Mont Tombe. In the Carolingian period the oratory was replaced by an abbey and from that time until the 16th century, magnificent Romanesque and Gothic buildings were constructed. The abbey was well fortified and never conquered; having been used as a prison during the French Revolution and the Second Empire, in 1874 it was declared a Historic Monument and opened to the public all year round. Before returning to Cherbourg we will have free time to shop for souvenirs (with a wide range of copper, ceramic and porcelain objects to choose from) and local produce (such as butter biscuits and other typical products of Normandy). We can enjoy the atmosphere of this medieval village whose inhabitants carry on the island's traditions, continuing to make products for the delight of visitors and pilgrims coming to this unique site, just as they did over a thousand years ago. The Roman bridge over the River Miño, is also of great historical interest; it is 104 metres long and 4 metres wide and was rebuilt and repaired many times over the centuries. Inside the walls stands St. Mary's Cathedral, a Romanesque church which houses the chapel dedicated to San Froilán, the patron saint of the city, and boasts the Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, also featured on the coat of arms of the city. From the Romanesque style of the Cathedral, we move on to the Gothic Church of Saint Francis. Built in the 15th century on a Latin cross plan with Gothic arches, the church stood alongside the ancient Convent of St. Francis, of which today only the cloister remains; built on a square plan with round arches supported by twin columns decorated with plant motifs. The cloister is now one the locations of the Provincial Museum of Lugo and it houses, among other things, a collection of Galician art. We continue our walk towards the Church of San Dominic, built on a Latin cross plan with a single nave dating back to the 14th century. The church was originally a Dominican convent from the 13th century and in the 18th century a Baroque cloister was attached. We then continue by coach along the coast to the charming St. Anthony's Castle; originally built as an island fortress, the castle is now an archaeological museum connected to the city by a strip of land. We then visit the beautiful Mendez Nuñez Gardens, some of the oldest gardens in the city, dating back to the 19th century PAGE 22

We stop to visit this magnificent fortified town, with its characteristic star shape, whose walls shelter pretty small squares and picturesque alleys which leave indelible impressions in our memory. The city was originally founded with the name "Contrasta", because it was built in front of the Galician city of Tui at the behest of King Sancho I of Portugal after the breakdown of the marriage of his daughter Teresa with Alfonso IX of Castile. Its current name dates back to From the fortress of Valença we admire the view of the fortified cathedral of Tui, on the opposite bank of the River Miño. PAGE 23

24 We return to the coach and after crossing the border back into Spain, we visit Tui, which has been declared a city of historical and artistic interest. In this city in the Province of Pontevedra we visit the*cathedral of Santa Maria*, founded in 1120 and subsequently an embattled fortress in Romanesque-Gothic style. From the tower, which is like a balcony overlooking the river, we can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city before returning to Vigo. In our free time we have a taste of Spanish cuisine in a splendid 15th century hotel. Road to Santiago Santiago Cathedral Lunch with traditional tapas The coach takes us to the point of departure of our walk. Even though this is the part of the "Road to Santiago" which is meant to be covered after arriving in Santiago, today it is one of Santiago's most fascinating walking itineraries. Other sections of the French Way lead to the centre of Santiago along new roads with modern buildings. Once we reach the point of departure a 5 km walk awaits us; a winding trail through forests, mountains and rivers. During our walk we will be immersed in Nature for a totally unique experience, in which meditation and spirituality come together in search of an often lost contact with the beating heart of the world. The excursion ends in Santiago with the visit to PAGE 24

25 the Cathedral, one of the most important Catholic sanctuaries and the burial place of the Apostle Saint James the Greater, patron saint of Spain and Christian martyr. The most important aspects of the building will be illustrated to us by a guide. It will be possible to visit the interior independently. In our free time we can go for an enjoyable walk in the picturesque alleys of the historic centre. We can then enjoy a lovely tapas lunch, the traditional Spanish finger food, and other typical delicacies at the Parador de los Reyes Catolicos, an exclusive five star hotel built in 1499 to accommodate pilgrims when they arrived in Santiago. After lunch, we still have a little more free time before going back to Vigo. Pazo de Rubianes: historic residence and gardens El Grove Catamaran cruise along the Arousa estuary Visit to a mussel farm Mussel tasting session We leave the port of Vigo behind us and head towards our first stop: the magnificent historic residence of Pazo de Rubianes where history, wine culture and the art of gardening form a unique combination. * The residence was built in the 15th century and is therefore over 600 years old during which it changed in line with the times and styles until it became the housemuseum where we can now retrace history. * In addition to its excellent vineyards, Pazo de Rubianes is surrounded by over 11 hectares of marvellous gardens with giant eucalypti with a circumference of over 12 metres, fantastic flower beds arranged geometrically, tall sequoia trees and grand magnolias part of the list of monumental trees present in Galicia. We move on towards El Grove, a seaside town located on the estuary of the Arousa river. We board a catamaran to discover the estuary as far as a peculiar floating platform used to farm mussels. * After learning more about this activity, we sail back towards the port and, along the way, enjoy delicious mussels with some white wine or soft drinks. Galician landscape the Village of Cambados Vilanova de Arousa Agro de Bazán Winery We set off to discover Galicia, a land of magnificent views that is rich in local products that are all waiting to be enjoyed. We leave the port and head north. Once we have crossed the bridge over the Vigo estuary we continue our journey through the typical lush Galician countryside. Lying between valleys rich in vegetation and a beautiful coastline, lapped by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Galicia bewitches us with its unique combination of history, art and scenic splendour. When we arrive in the village of Cambados, we can admire its typical picturesque characteristics. The town is dominated by stone buildings, which exude ancestral sturdiness, and is home to one of the most important noble palace complexes of Galicia. The historic centre was declared to be a Heritage of Cultural Interest by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. We then take the coach again to Vilanova de Arousa,a small village with ancient traditions as a port: its idyllic beaches can be admired from Monte Lobeira, the highest point of the village. It is precisely here in this village that we find the renowned "Agro de Bazán" Wine Cellar, which, exploiting the fine Albariño grape, produces excellent white wine, sold in particularly original bottles. Accompanied by our guide, we visit the premises where the wine making and bottling processes take place. At the end of our visit we enjoy a snack, a fitting conclusion to our excursion, to appreciate the aroma and flavour of typical local cheeses and wines. Places on this excursion are limited. Monte del Castro Baiona Panoramic Vigo Parador Monterreal After leaving the port by coach we head for the Monte del Castro: situated close to the sea, it is one of the symbols of the city and hosts a vast luxuriant park. We stop briefly here to admire the panorama of the city of Vigo, the bay and the port. Back on our coach we proceed along the coast road in the direction of Baiona, one of the major and most characteristic fishing villages on the Galician coast. Its historic centre, with its quaint narrow streets and neat stone and granite houses, cobbled streets and the views from the ramparts with a sheer drop above the sea, exudes an atmosphere of orderly tradition and a sense of pleasant intimacy. It was right here, on 1st March 1493, that one of the caravels of the Columbus expedition, the "Pinta", having crossed back over the Atlantic Ocean, docked on its return to Europe with the news of the discovery of the "New World". Today a replica of the Pinta is berthed in the very same port. After our stroll around the historic centre, we visit the Parador Monterreal, an imposing 16th century palace, built in the style of a Galician manor house within the walls of a Medieval fortress. Today it houses a splendid hotel, whose centrepiece is the magnificent stone staircase which leads from the entrance to the floor above. From the terrace you can admire the wonderful panorama of the city while enjoying a drink at the bar of this magnificent hotel. Keeping to the coast, we can admire some of the main places of interest in the Portuguese capital: the great Praça do Comércio, with its five Catholic churches and typical colonial houses, and the historic district of Belém dotted with monuments dating back to the 15th and 16th century, built to celebrate the Portuguese discoveries. We leave the city, heading west along the northern bank of the Tagus River towards the most popular beaches accessible from central Lisbon, with their expanses of sand lapped by the ocean. Our final destination is Carcavelos beach, where the Portuguese traditionally go on New Year's Eve for their first swim of the year. A kilometre and a half long its clean water is renowned for surfing, golden sand and excellent facilities.
