Athens Studio 2016 January February 2016 Studio coordinators Kalliope Kontozoglou and Nigel Westbrook In 2016, we will offer a studio in Athens to a maximum of 24 students in the 3 rd to 5 th year of their course. 3 rd year students will take the studio as their ARCT point unit. 4 th and 5 th year students have the opfon of taking the studio as a 12 point design studio, or a 6 point research unit, leading on to parfcipafon in a small studio with Nigel Westbrook in semester If you choose to take the 6 point unit, you will take part in the same acfvifes as the other students, and will develop a brief and conceptual strategy by the end of the 6 weeks. This will enable you to develop a detailed and complex project with your own brief in semester 1. 1

Opening night, exhibi-on of UWA work at the Hellenic- American union, January In , Nigel Westbrook and Greek architect Kalliope Kontozoglou have run UWA design studios in the Greek capital Athens, focusing on visions for how the city will transform in the future, in the context of the current financial crisis, mass emigrafon and social instability. Our projects aimed to imagine possible new urban situafons that build upon the incredibly rich urban culture of Athens. In 2015, we collaborated with Simon de MonUort school of architecture, University of Leicester, and we intend to run joint programmes again in

This will be the sixth studio in Athens- previous studios were held in , , 2013 (pictured here) and

Daniel Mar-n ta Eleonas This is a project by Daniel MarFn for a series of incremental public open space inserfons to create a passage between the archaeological park and a new park, of Eleonas ( the Olives ) further to the west. 4

Anna Mustard Marathonas And in 2015, Anna Mustard designed a series of pathways and facilifes to support the marathon course and annual event in eastern A`ca. 5

Josh Bentley the Seabaths While also in 2014, Josh Bentley designed a complex of sea baths on the coast of Piraeus, the port of Athens. 6

Opening night, exhibi-on of UWA work at the Hellenic- American union, January In addifon to this years studio, in January 2015 we held an exhibifon at the Hellenic- American Union s galleries of work. 11 The theme of the 2016 studio will be The Skin of the City. "...in a period in which external reality is incapable of providing collecfve or intersubjecfve experience, some such otherness or sense of reality, the boundaries of one's idenfty are no longer free in allowing the movement from internal to external reality and vice versa. The boundary itself becomes the focus..." About the period between the 2WWs : "... contemporary movements in Germany and Italy likewise generated a cult of the surface, where "finish" was a complement to the themes of melancholy and nostalgia characterisfc of the Pikura Metafisica or the Neue Sachlichkeit movements...the body becomes interchangeable with light- pakerns, and clothing and skin becomes transparency." "La Pelle" essay by Yehuda Safran in 9H issue "on Rigor" The inner centre of the city of Athens as it is defined by the Historical Triangle of the C 19 th Neoclassical Urban Plan is the site of the project, which is to be explored not as a planning exercise, but as the skin of the city as the new boundary. Athens, much more than any other city in Greece, has suffered from the ongoing 6- year economic crisis and it presents a ferfle area for architectural study and explorafon. 11

Daniel Mar-n, Jaime mayger and Kevin Leutenegger, Athens experien-al sec-on, 2014 As in previous studios, we will commence with the Marco Polo exercise, a short introductory project that could be a composite drawing of the centre of Athens, done as a mapping exercise. The students will be divided as usual in groups and sent out to explore, record and present to the rest. 12

19 th century neo- classical plan of Athens The main project is the 3 rd part of the Future Athens brief that started 2 years ago and confnues on the theme of the city transformafon in 20 years Fme. The inner centre of the city of Athens as it is defined by the Historical Triangle of the 19 th Century Neoclassical Urban Plan is the site of the project, which is to be explored not as a planning exercise, but as the skin of the city, forming the new boundary. Athens, much more than any other city in Greece, has suffered from the ongoing 6- year economic crisis and it presents a ferfle area for architectural study and explorafon. The theme of Skin will be explored, in all its conceptual and experienfal dimensions. 13

As in previous studios, there will be extensive events and excursions in and outside Athens: The studio will undertake excursions that will support the studio theme, such as a day trip to Delphi or another day trip to Epidauros stopping on the way at Elefsis and Corinth; a 2 or 3- day trip with students from Leicester and Sydney University, and a series of tours in Athens covering both the archaeological as well as the modern sites. These will include: Athens walk Ancients Athens Tour Day trip to Delphi 3- day trip with Archaeologists from Sydney Acropolis tour Modern Architecture tour Day trip to Epidauros, Mycenae 14

One of the sites we will visit is Delphi- the naval of the world and the shrine of Apollo- one of the most beaufful places in the world. 15

Venue The studio will take place between January 6 and February 14 at the Australian Archeological InsFtute at Athens hostel, located in Makriyianni, south of the Acropolis in central Athens. The Australian hostel is within walking distance of central Athens and the major public buildings, restaurants and parks. Overall costs will be in the order of the following: Flight $ AccommodaFon $750 approx. (depending on exchange rate and choice of hostel Program fee $200 (includes studio accommodafon Excursions $500 (esfmated) Living costs $ per week Detailed costs will be distributed when the studio is confirmed as proceeding. 16

Comfortable and inexpensive accommodafon will be provided by hostels run by the various nafonal research schools. In the past they have included the BriFsh, Swiss, Australian, Irish and Finnish schools. This is the roof terrace of the Finnish school hostel, which was our teaching base in

In addifon to the hostels, we will be renfng urban studio space at a very moderate cost per student. You will need to bring laptops and drawing materials. 18
