6 1. The story can only be told here. Our city made the great liner the largest and most luxurious ever seen. A stunning achievement of both engineering and imagination made all the more poignant by what happened on that fateful maiden voyage. Throughout the world, the very name Titanic continues to fascinate, and now visitors have the opportunity to explore how and where the liner was built. You can get an authentic experience of the lavish conditions, the vast scale of its construction and, of course, the tragic aftermath. Titanic Belfast is a visitor attraction like no other, comparable in its originality and design only to the remarkable story that inspired it. The Titanic City of Belfast A city on the rise It s all happening in Belfast these days with world-class attractions, great visitor accommodation, fantastic shopping, excellent restaurants and brilliant nightlife. And with the visitors, the accolades are coming too. In 2017 the city won the Rising Star award in the National Geographic Traveller Reader Awards. Lonely Planet named Belfast joint number-one region to visit in 2018 (along with the Causeway Coastal Route), and Condé Nast Traveller magazine has put us in the top 10 must-see UK cities. Then of course there s Titanic Belfast a truly world-class visitor experience. Named best European attraction and World s Leading Tourist Attraction in 2016, it has already welcomed over three million visitors. From the emerging cultural hub of the Cathedral Quarter to the burgeoning Titanic Quarter, Belfast is a modern European city that excites, with a non-stop energy and above all, a distinctive spirit. 8 Belfast City Hall Titanic Belfast 9

Step through the doors of the gleaming aluminium-clad structure and you find yourself in a vast atrium space with four hull-shaped wings. These house the Titanic experience. There is even a virtual ride through the Titanic s construction. This extraordinary experience tells the entire story of the great ship, from its conception here in Belfast at the turn of the twentieth century, to its construction, its famous launch and equally infamous end. But the story does not end there. It is brought up to date with the discovery of the wreck and live links of undersea exploration. Titanic Belfast E: welcome@titanicbelfast.com Tel: +44 (0) Titanic Belfast Enhancements to the experience now also include afternoon tea in the Ballroom by the replica staircase, dining at Hickson s Point and tours of the slipways. 14 2. Causeway Coastal Route and Glens This is the land of legends, a breathtaking coastline leading all the way to the Giant s Causeway UNESCO World Heritage site and geological wonder. The route itself is acknowledged to be one of the most spectacular drives anywhere. Lonely Planet recently named this its top region to visit in 2018 along with Belfast, our buzzing capital city. It s easy to see why. This is one of the most exciting journeys any traveller can experience. The landscape is astonishingly varied, from dramatic cliffs, broad, unspoilt beaches and tranquil bays to enchanting villages, castles and monuments. The route itself takes in no fewer than three designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty: the Antrim Coast and Glens; the Causeway Coast; and Binevenagh, with its dizzying cliffs and ancient forest. But there s more to the Causeway Coastal Route than stunning scenery. So much more. Mussenden Temple, Causeway Coastal Route Downhill Beach, Causeway Coastal Route

15 Giant s Causeway, Causeway Coastal Route 01. Giant s Causeway To step out on to the stone amphitheatre and lava plateau of the Giant s Causeway is to step out on to another world. Nothing quite prepares you for this. There are two explanations for this landscape, both equally fantastical. The first attributes it to mighty volcanoes and flaming oceans of lava seething beneath the earth s crust, as its great plates ground together. Once cooled, they say, this left a vast stone forest of 40,000 basalt columns each with six sides. The other story says the Causeway was carved from the coast by the fearsome Irish giant, Finn McCool himself. You can still see the traces he left the giant s Boot, the Wishing Chair, the Giant s Granny, The Organ, The Camel. To help you decide which explanation sounds more plausible, be sure to visit the awardwinning Causeway Visitor Centre, where you can unlock the mystery a little more. The Centre also has a number of innovative sustainability features, including a grass roof grown from seeds collected from local fields; and a basalt exterior, quarried from the same lava flows that formed the Causeway. (Unless, of course, it really was Finn after all ) Fully guided tours are available, along with audio guides in multiple languages. The Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge was originally a single-rope handrail with widely spaced slats that local fishermen would use to transport freshly caught salmon. Today s bridge is certainly a more stable structure, but the walk across it is still a genuinely exhilarating experience. And once you ve made it all the way across, you ll find you want to do it again. Maybe. 56 Down Cathedral, Downpatrick, Co. Down 11. Saint Patrick s Heartland Saint Patrick is a key figure in the history of Ireland and in ideas of Irishness, both at home and throughout the world. Celebrations of the feast day of Ireland s patron saint (on the 17th of March) are marked globally with displays of pageantry, colour, food, drink and music all Irish, of course. Many visitors are interested in following Saint Patrick s footsteps, and discovering the places associated with his story many of which form part of the landscape here in Northern Ireland. The Saint Patrick s Trail is a self-directed 92km driving route mainly in counties Down and Armagh that links 15 sites, all identified as having some connection to Patrick s life, legacy or landscape. The Trail features museums, shrines, hilltop statues and ancient monastic ruins with stories of early Christian Ireland. Many of the heritage sites associated with Saint Patrick are informal, with no visitor centres of official point of contact. They are all signposted and are free to explore. Whether your interest is primarily historical or spiritual, you will find the Trail a rewarding and thought-provoking experience. 108 Inch Abbey, Co. Down 109

57 St Patrick Centre, Downpatrick 01. Saint Patrick Centre Located in the centre of busy Downpatrick, the stylish and modern Saint Patrick Centre is an oasis of calm and tranquillity. It takes you into the 5th century world of the Patrick story, from his earliest days, his travels and arrival in Ireland, his work among the non-christian Celts, the monasteries and churches he built, through to his departure from Ireland and last return. You can also read his Confession of Faith in his own words. There are interactive displays in the centre that examine Patrick s legacy in county Down and beyond, including the wider early Christian heritage as seen through illuminated manuscripts and sacred artefacts. The centre also features an auditorium with a 180-degree audio-visual presentation. Behind the centre there are tiered gardens, with a meditation space. 58 Down Cathedral Here you will find the final resting place of the great saint. The legend says that after his death, the body of Saint Patrick was placed on a cart drawn by two bulls. Wherever they stopped, there would be his burial place. The bulls came to a stop near the top of a hill where today, 1500 years later, a cathedral stands. Inside, there is a great granite slab marking the grave of Patrick. The site was originally a monastery, then a parish church. In 1790, the remains of the round tower and old monastery were incorporated into the structure of the cathedral. Down Cathedral and Saint Patrick s Grave E: info@downcathedral.org Tel: +44 (0) Struell Wells Saint Patrick bathed, blessed and baptised his people at wells throughout Ireland, using the waters to demonstrate divine power or expressions of piety and devotion. Of those many wells, these are the most famous. Between the 16th and 19th century, thousands of pilgrims came here to bathe their eyes and feet a prayer to encourage knowledge and action. The waters at Struell continue to flow, and many features have been restored and reserved. It is a place of intense spirituality and historical interest. Struell Wells E: scmenquiries@communities-ni.gov.uk Tel: +44 (0) Saul It is said that Saint Patrick first landed in Ireland at this spot, where the strong currents of Strangford Lough meet the Slaney River. And it is here that he founded his first church, in a barn given to him by a local chieftain. (The placename Saul comes from the Irish sabhall, meaning a barn.) The St. Patrick s Memorial Church is reputedly built on the site of the original barn, and features a replica round tower. Nearby on the crest of Slieve Patrick is a towering statue of the saint with bronze panels depicting scene from his life. It was at Saul that Saint Patrick died. Saul Church Tel: +44 (0) Inch Abbey These extensive remains are of a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1180 by John de Courcey, who led the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ulster in Before the Abbey was built, there was a pre-norman church on the site, which was plundered by Vikings in The Abbey s vast earthworks still survive in parts and can be seen from the air. Another, more unusual way to approach the Abbey is via the steam train operated out of Downpatrick on a restored section of track. The train terminates at the Abbey, and then it s just a short stroll to the site itself. Inch Abbey E: scmenquiries@communities-ni.gov.uk Tel: +44 (0)

59 Bangor Abbey You can begin the Saint Patrick s Trail here in Bangor. Legend says that Patrick had a vision of a place he called vallis angelorum the Valley of Angels. In time, that place became Bangor, where Comgall founded his monastery in 558AD. He gathered a group of devout monks about him, and their saintly life and scholarly achievements became the envy of the age. By the time Comgall died in 601AD, the monastery was one of the most important seats of learning in early Christian Ireland. Bangor Abbey E: bangorvic@ardsandnorthdown.gov.uk Tel:+44 (0) North Down Museum North Down Museum is an ideal place to begin any St. Patrick s itinerary. It was from here that Saint Columbanus set out for Europe to rekindle Christianity in the Dark Ages. The museum is also home to several notable artefacts: the Antiphonary of Bangor one of the earliest manuscripts from the ancient Irish church as well as the Bangor Bell, a 9th-century wedgeshaped Sanctus bell cast entirely in bronze, with an incised cross and Celtic scroll. It marks the period when the monastery in this busy seaside town was once one of the most important in Christendom. 08. Nendrum At 20km from Bangor is one of the finest surviving examples of an early Christian monastery. At Nendrum you can get a real sense of the tranquillity and isolation of monastic life in the 5th and 6th centuries. There are documents from the 7th century that speak of the founding of the monastery, which lasted until it was razed in a Viking raid in 976AD. On this intensely atmospheric site you can walk freely among the three dry-stonewalled enclosures, a church ruin, a sundial, the remains of a round tower and an ancient graveyard. 60 12. Northern Ireland, Made for Golf A golfing holiday in Northern Ireland offers dramatic scenery, beautiful settings, outstanding quality facilities, and a warm welcome too. It could well be your best round ever. In geographic terms, Northern Ireland is not a huge country. But when it comes to golf, make no mistake: we re a giant, with over 90 courses and champions like Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell to prove it. It s true what they say: major courses make major winners. And however good your game from absolute beginner to pro we ve got you covered, from gentle links to the most challenging championship courses. You ll find the number one in the world here, as voted by the panellists of Golf Digest Royal County Down as well as Royal Portrush, host of The 148th Open, which takes place July And in the splendid Royal Belfast, we also have the oldest course in Ireland. Our climate is soft and temperate, meaning it s good for golf pretty much all year round. (And a little rain now and then never hurt anyone, let alone got in the way of 18 holes.) Ardglass Golf Club, Co. Down Galgorm Castle Golf Club, Co. Antrim

61 01. Royal County Down Exactly what was it about Royal County Down that prompted the panellists of Golf Digest to declare it the number one course in the world. Perhaps it was the ribbons of fairways so beautiful yet so punishing that thread their way through the sand dunes amid the spectacular setting of Murlough Nature Reserve along the shores of Dundrum Bay. It could have been the famous ancient bearded bunkers edged with marram, red fescue and heather. Or the fast, domed greens. Maybe it was, as golf writer Bernard Darwin said, because Royal County Down offers big and glorious carries, nestling greens, entertainingly blind shots, local knowledge and beautiful turf the kind of golf that people play in their most ecstatic dreams. Over-hit your second stroke at the 5th, White Rock, and you re in the Atlantic. Two new holes have been added that have the potential to become iconic throughout the world of golf. Mis-hit this one and you ll be taking your next swing from at least 50 feet below the hole Then, that s what makes the difference between champions and mere mortals. The beautiful, refurbished Clotworthy House sits within the gardens, and contains exhibitions on their history and that of the local area. Clotworthy also offers a yearround programme of talks, workshops, arts events and performances. 04. Bangor Castle Walled Garden The Ward family created the Castle Park Walled Garden in the 1840s and it was considered a ecret space until it was finally opened to the public in Its 1.5-acre area is divided into four distinct gardens: kitchen, herb and topiary, swamp and flower. It also features two unique sculptures inspired by the region s distinguished maritime history.
