Evening at leisure Day-1 BELGRADE Day-2 BELGRADE CITY TOUR: PANORAMIC TOUR BY MINIBUS Breakfast. Explore the Kalemegdan park and the Belgrade Fortress with the remains of the ancient city of Singidunum, today Belgrade. The city was founded by a Celtic tribe in the 3rd century BC. From the 1st century AD Singidunum was an important fortress and town, a Roman colony on the military frontier between the Roman Empire and barbaric Eastern Europe. Visit the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral (Saborna crkva), which was built on the orders of Prince Miloš Obrenović in 1837 in a classical style with late baroque elements. The church is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Visit the magnificent Cathedral of St. Sava, the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans, dedicated to to St. Sava the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It lies on the spot where the original church was burnt in 1595 by the Turks, led by Sinan Pasha. The preparation for the construction was only started at the end of the 19th Century, and while the exterior work has been completed, the interior remains uncompleted. Day-3 BELGRADE FROM BELGRADE Breakfast and start with an hour long drive through the seemingly endless plains that characterize Vojvodina. As the scenery gradually changes to mildly rolling hills, and corn and wheat fields give way to apple and pear orchards, you will arrive to your first stop - the famous Serb Orthodox Monastery of Krušedol. Established in the early 16th century by the last dynasty of medieval Serbia, the Brankovićs, for centuries it served as a burial church for the most illustrious Serbs of the Habsburg Empire - patriarchs, dukes and even an exiled king. Inside the monastery church, you will see a stunning late medieval iconostasis and several layers of frescoes but, most importantly, you will feel the air of past times and of Orthodox Christian monasticism. Just a few minutes drive away lays Sremski Karlovci, a historic townlet known for its Baroque churches and excellent wine. Today quiet and provincial, for over two centuries, the town has been an unofficial capital of Serbs in the Habsburg Empire and as a result, the town center boasts several nice palaces and churches including the grand Orthodox Cathedral. After sightseeing, continue to a local wine cellar where you will be treated to a tour with a tasting of local wines amongst them also bermet, the much cherished specialty of Sremski Karlovci,

4 which spread its fame to Vienna and beyond. Not far away is a totally different historic monument the Petrovaradin Fortress. The cliffs of the steep hill above the Danube have been fortified by the Habsburgs for over a century in order to make it their strongest point of defense towards the Turks. The final result is the mightiest fortification on the Danube with dozens of bastions, trenches and gates, today fully enjoyed by locals and visitors. This citadel is also known for its stunning vistas overthe whole of the city of Novi Sad as well as for Exit Fest, for years one of the best music festivals in Europe. On the other side of the river spreads Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina. Though not as old as its neighbors, the city boasts a lovely 19th century center teeming with stylishly dressed youth, many churches of its ethnically diverse population and museums and galleries packed with history and art, from Roman helmets to modernist paintings. After a lunch in the city center, you will have time to explore Novi Sad on your own.full of impressions, you will head back to Belgrade where you will arrive in late afternoon. Day-4 TOPOLA & OPLENAC ROYAL TOUR visit the Karadjordjev Grad Fort where the museum and modest old church are situated. Here, you will learn about the town s importance in Serbian history and see the remains from the time of the First Serbian Insurrection againstthe Ottomans ( ). In the church, see the splendid iconostasis with its meticulous carvings. Atop the forested Oplenac hill sits one of the nicest sights in the whole of Serbia the mausoleum church of the Karadjordjević royal house. From the outside the five-domed church is covered in shiny white marble while inside of it visitors admire hundreds of scenes done in mosaics, all of them copies from medieval Serbian monasteries. In itcrypt, you will see more mosaics as well as the graves of 25 members of the Karadjordjević dynasty. Next door, you will find the house of King Petar I, today a part of the museum with royal portraits and interesting historical items. After visit Karadjordje s monument, see the memorial village school as well as the Marićevićа Jaruga gully, where the insurrectionists gathered.
