After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely drive through the countryside to Budva, one of the oldest settlements in the Balkans. While meandering through the medieval Old Town (known as Stari Grad), you can t help but be struck by the gorgeous setting. English poet Lord Bryon described it as the most beautiful meeting of land and sea. As you will discover during the guided tour and free time that follows, Budva is still remarkable, especially its idyllic setting on an island-dotted bay. You can expect to see historical churches, the 15th-century ramparts and charming squares lined with boutiques. Continuing on into the Grbalj plain between Budva and Kotor, you will visit a shop that sells kilim carpets. While kilim is a word of Turkish origin, this style of flat-weave carpet is produced in many countries, including Montenegro. The weaving technique favors diagonal and geometrical patterns with wool being the preferred material because of its durability. After departing from the pier, you will follow a coastal road along the gorgeous Bay of Kotor, first passing through the fishing village of Muo. You will travel by tuk-tuk, an open-air covered vehicle originally named for the sound of its engine. Modern engines are noticeably quieter, and the tuk-tuk is now one of the most desirable ways to get around. Upon arriving in Prcanj, you will pause for photos of Our Lady s Temple. Built in the Baroque style over the course of 120 years, the church finally opened in The lengthy construction was worth the wait. 7 Kotor, Montenegro Tour Code: KOT_05 For the fit and active person who wants to learn about the history of this beautiful town and have the most amazing views, this tour is worth every one of the 1,350 zigzagging steps to the top. Start with an orientation walk of Kotor and see its squares, cathedral, Maritime Museum, churches, noblemen houses and terraces. The medieval city of Kotor has a turbulent history of invasions. It was watched over and defended by an imposing network of towers, bastions and ramparts built along the cliffs of Mount Sveti Ivan or St John. Several times they stopped the invaders who retreated before the walls, enchanted by their grandiosity. Although the size of the walls caused awe, they could not do much without a good defense within the city. Follow your guide up, making stops along the way. The first plateau is the bastion of St. Roko. You ll also make a stop to visit the church of our Lady of the Health. With your ship in the bay and the red tiled roof tops in contrast, the views are simply spectacular! Note: Participants must be at least 12 years of age, physically fit and in excellent health. The hike to the top is approximately ¾ miles (1200m.) and takes approximately one hour on uneven terrain and steps which can be slippery (1350), loose stones and rough pebbles on the walking trails. At the pier, you ll meet your tour leader, who will give you a short introduction about the tour, safety briefing and equipment needed. Then your adventure starts. A 14 mile (23 km) itinerary takes you to some of the most interesting places of the area. See fishing villages, small islands with churches, old palaces, beaches and beautiful nature. You ll pass through the sleepy villages of Muo, Prcanj and Stoliv, so you can get an idea of how the locals live. Stop at the Gospa od Skrpjela viewpoint. Here, you ll see a beautiful church perched on a little green island in the middle of the sea. Finally, you ll pedal back towards Kotor, pausing to enjoy a refreshment break. Its architecture is considered of great universal value. The largest and most impressive of these buildings is the cathedral of St. Tryphon. During the 1979 earthquake many monuments were seriously damaged, but the town has been restored, largely with the help of UNESCO. Start your walking tour with a fabulous view of the nearly 3 mile (4.5 km) long town walls which appear above you. Stepping into the biggest square of the Old Town, you ll be taken back centuries to the period of Venetian rule. The palaces of the noblemen are still the dominant perspective in the narrow streets. They lead you towards the wide squares lined with historical buildings. Visit the cathedral of St. Triphon, a unique example of the mixture of different art styles. You ll also visit the Maritime Museum where you ll learn how the naval traditions were always an unbroken link between the citizens of Kotor and the sea. The little town of Perast is situated at the foot of St. Elijah Hill, opposite the narrow Verige strait. Despite its size, it has a sophisticated urban structure. A great number of public buildings line the waterfront. Follow your guide along the seaside and get a unique perspective of the best preserved baroque town on the Adriatic coast, with views towards the two church islands St. George and Our Lady of the Rock.
