3 GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR OF Welcome to Budapest! 2 GUIDE Welcome to the Hungarian capital, which is an increasingly popular tourist destination and a more and more important location on the tourist map of the world. Tourism in Hungary closed its best year ever last year, and similar results are expected in the sector this year. One of the main reasons for the development is that Hungary is considered to be a safe and predictable destination, while Budapest is seen as the most exciting and most vibrant city in the region, offering a range of attractions to its visitors. The Hungarian capital is a self-conscious and at the same time hospitable city an increasingly solid identity, a colourful cultural life and rich traditions a city which unites. The leadership of the capital is dedicated to establishing a city which is proud of its spirit and its past, in which people can live comfortably in the present as well, and which enchants its visitors. To further these, popular districts in the city cen- tre, as well as representative public buildings and squares, are being continuously renovated, and the world-famous thermal baths of Budapest are also constantly under development. The Budapest Guide introduces the sights and the cultural institutions of the Hungarian capital, as well as several other places of interest for tourists, providing maps, descriptions, useful information, colourful illustrations and recommendations. It is no secret that our aim is to attract more and more visitors to the Hungarian capital, and we would like to persuade tourists to stay longer and return to us more frequently. I hope that this publication will be useful for you. Have a good time in Budapest and share your good memories others as well! István Tarlós The Mayor of Budapest GUIDE 3
