32 Research methods The research was conducted in the year 2008 and 2009 in the offices, libraries, factories and schools and in the streets of analyzed cities. Respondents may be divided into three groups: - inhabitants with a university degree who take an active part in towns social and cultural life, - inhabitants working in tourism and castles, - other inhabitants. Total number of conducted questionnairies is 661 (more than 100 in each city). Selection of the research sample can be defined on a degree of availability

46 CONCLUSIONS CASTLES Biggest tourist attraction in the town Service concentrated on tourists or local inhabitants Place of work, recreation, entertainment, hobby, cultural development for the locals Huge impact on cultural life, big impact on the economy (depend on the castle) Sometimes inaccessible because of the service profile and high prices Need of change: higher service standard, restoration, more attractions and events RESPONDENTS Small castle impact on personal life, much bigger on the town s life Castles impact on towns: direct one (working places, taxes, other public events) and indirect a result of tourism function Positive attitude to the castles and towns changes Problems to resolve in the towns: more attractions and events, traffic, municipal infrastructure, renovation Threats about selling castles into private hands
47 CHANCES Sales of the castles into private hands new investments New investments in the towns (outside the castle hill) which can attract tourists and encourage them to stay longer THREATS Polarisation of the local tourism market and creating a tourist ghetto in the castle hills Growing competition between castles and towns RECOMMENDATIONS Broadening the tourism offer of the towns Creating new attractions Common tourist promotion of castles and towns Cooperation between castles and towns in the region new tourist products and image creation (local and regional) Evaluation and research of the castles, tourists nad local inhabitants
