19 Mokra Gora Drvengrad town-hotel without a nail Mokra Gora, picturesque mountain village located between Zlatibor and Tara, is mostly famous for Šargan Eight Train and Drvengrad. Mokra Gora will meet you with retro-train Čira that travels at the bottom of Šargan mountain at former route Belgrade-Sarajevo. The term monastery basically means a church with accompanying buildings where according to the rules monks and nuns live. Serbia can be proud of its 212 monasteries, 54 of which were proclaimed cultural monuments. Moreover, UNESCO World Heritage List includes Serbian monasteries Sopoćani and Đurđevi Stupovi with the church of Saint Peter and Paul, Studenica monastery, medieval monasteries in southern Serbian Province Kosovo and Metohija called Dečani, Pećka Patriarchy, Gračanica, and the Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš.

MONASTERY tours Valley of the kings Valley of the Kings in the valley of Ibar and Raška Rivers was the place where in the 12th century Serbian Medieval State had been born. Here the most prominent Middle Age monasteries are located: Đurđevi Stupovi, Studenica, Žiča and Sopoćani. Fantastic mixture of Byzantine and Romanesque styles created a new, particular tendency in Serbian architecture famous Raška style. The above mentioned monasteries are included in Route of culture Transromanica that binds European objects built in Romanesque period. Morava Monasteries In the valley of the Morava River after tragic battles in Kosovo and River Marica against Ottomans, Morava architecture school was born and influenced by Byzantia. Monasteries Manasija, Ravanica, Kalenić, Ljubostinja were built at that time, late 14th-early 15th century, when Serbian Despotic state was flourishing. Fruška Gora Monasteries North of Serbia, slopes of fertile mountain Fruška Gora known as Serbian Holy Mountain, host 17 monasteries built mainly during the rule of Ottoman Empire in Serbia in 15th and 16th centuries, when Serbian court was hiding at the territory of Hungary of that time. Firstly built in Morava-Raška style, the monasteries after destruction and restorations got rich baroque look. Kosovo Monasteries Extreme South of Serbia, Province of Kosovo and Metohija where medieval Serbian State in the 13th and 14th centuries became enormous and great, hosts the most beautiful and precious monasteries, gems of Serbian genius of Middle Age. Priceless frescoes made under great Byzantine influence are well preserved in Dećani, Gračanica Monasteries and Patriarchy of Peć. 22

24 Serbian flow of Danube is 588 km long! Danube, the river with a thousand faces, differs from other rivers not only in natural riches but in great cultural and historical heritage. Even ancient chronicles contain notes about Danube s importance and its status of the greatest among rivers. Numerous first settlements in Europe appeared on the banks of this guardian of time. Archaeological findings prove that Danube has been source of life for ancient cultures of Lepenski Vir and Vinča from VI century BC. Danube was the most important connection between East and West and border of the Roman Empire, evidence of which are the remains of Viminacium, Roman town and fortification, Trajan s bridge and Roman limes. Nowadays Danube, the only waterway, still plays the role of uniting link between western and eastern parts of the European continent.

25 Exactly in Serbia this peaceful flat ground river turns into fast tumultuous flow. Upstream waters of Danube at Vojvodina plain flow down to Fruška Gora, former Austrian-Hungarian city of Novi Sad, romantic Sremski Karlovci, modern capital Belgrade and medieval capital Smederevo. After Golubac Fotress where Danube is the widest (about 6 km) wild and impervious Djerdap gorge starts, the biggest river gorge in Europe 98 km long. Here famous Kazan is located the deepest (90 m) and narrowest (only 150 m) place of Danube famous as the Iron Gate that for centuries has been defending Serbian lands from conquerors. Although Danube flows through 10 countries, its flow through Serbia is considered to be most attractive to tourists due to the above mentioned facts.
