7 HARVARD STUDY LADR: Mary Gaylord Sosland Family, Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures Mary Malcolm Gaylord is Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University, where she teaches late medieval and early modern Spanish and Spanish-American literature and comparative Romance literatures. From her graduate student days to the present, she has been fascinated by the dialogue between imaginative writers and historians that helped to inspire many of the period s most innovative and influential literary creations, including the lyric poetry and drama of the Spanish Baroque and the seminal works of prose fiction (most famously, Don Quixote) that gave rise to the modern novel. On this excursion, Mary looks forward to retracing some of Cervantes s own travels, in life and art, and to comparing what he saw in the 16th and 17th centuries with Mediterranean and Atlantic horizons in the 21st century. She is eager to share recent research findings from a book project, on the ways the writer s personal experience and the echoed voices of his historian contemporaries converge in his masterpiece to shape a distinctive vision of his nation s history and to produce his most celebrated character, the Ingenious Knight from La Mancha.
