2 CRU to the N LJ Fi!OJ? C~3 t9 fj (_.. )L- VACATIONS THAT ARE DIFFERENT eome North this Summer- North to a new and unspoiled land- where dazzling icebergs drift serene- where beetling cliffs rebuke the screaming gulls- where lands of breathless beauty confine a tranquil sea. Here's where colour was born! More shades of green than the eye can count- ice-carved rocks which run through reds, purples, whites, blacks and greysbrilliant Summer sunshine that teases bizarre hues out of the sea. Battle Harbour, where Dr. Grenfell established his first Miss10n Post 40 years ago. Waiting for the School-bell. But when night comes to this rim of the Arctic, the visitor learns why it is referred to as the "home" of the Northern Lights! Suddenly one is aware of a ghostly illumination that seems to COme from nowhere and then the spectacle commences. Great, fan-like beams of rippling, blending, brilliant rainbows of the night... an awe-inspiring curtain of shot silk that sweeps across a thousand miles of sky. These lands beckon to the seekers of romance, yet are only around the corner from eastern Summer resorts! Let's look at a map of eastern Canada. (There's one in the centre-spread of this folder.) Now, let's cruise to these wonderful lands on a pencil point! Ready?... We start from Montreal (or Quebec if we prefer). Montreal is easy to find. It's right where the St. Lawrence River closes in and it's well worth a visit for its own sake. Here is the metropolis of Britain's greatest Dominion, a great seaport a thousand miles from the sea. You'll hear more French than English here and you'll see a charming mixture of the old and the new. But we're anxious to be off and our Clarke cruise ship awaits us. The whistle roars impatiently. The gangplank is pulled ashore. We're off on our dream cruise to the untrammelled lands of the mysterious North. Let your pencil slide down the St. Lawrence to Quebec. Here is a frowning old citadel atop Canada's guardian rock, with the huge modern Chateau The mighty banks of the Humber River, Nfld. Frontenac Hotel just alongside it, epitomizing the old and the new in one sweep of the eye. But the whistle blows again and the New Northland takes us away down the river (run your pencil along the South Shore) past the beautiful Isle of Orleans and along the rolling, verdant shores of the lower St. Lawrence where the "Quebecois" till their lands and peace hangs sweetly on the Summer air. Corner Brook, a busy paper mill town.
3 DE MONDAY The NEW NORTHLAND sails from Victoria Pier, Montreal, at 8.30 P.M., Eastern Standard Time. On her way down the St. Lawrence to Quebec, she steams under the great harbour bridge and passes scores of river craft and brilliantly lighted liners. 4 Lovers of dancing have plenty of_opportunity to indulge. gardens, a tannery, and even a tiny dry dock give evidence of the indefatigable work which brings help ana comfort to a tremendous stretch of rugged and sparsely settled country. At 5.00 P.M. we steam towards the Arctic Circle with the Northern Lights' mysterious glow about us. \J E'iDAY In the early morning we reach Battle Island and drop anchor in Battle Harbor, site of the first Mission established in Labrador by Dr. Grenfell forty years ago. Several extremely mteresting hours are spent here; at noon we turn southward to begin our homeward journey. Wf.- c; Y At 8.00 A.M. we enter Harrington Harbour, where is situated one of the Mission Posts of the Grenfell Association. At noon we continue along the interesting and ever-changing North Shore. T c:; ( We reach Havre St. Pierre, pnncipal village of the North Shore, at 8.00 A.M. Two hours are available for an enjoyable walk on shore. Here one sees something of the primitive life lived by the fishermen and fur traders; native rugs, blankets, and gifts may be purchased here. Cruising near the beautiful M ingan Islands, we see the tents of a nomadic tribe of Indians who here make their summer home. Back from the coast is the log house which once was the home of Donald Smith, Hudson Bay factor, who subsequently became Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal, a household name in Canadian history. ~ Y. In the late afternoon we reach the mouth of the Saguenay River; entering its mysterious depths we cruise slowly up to the awesome Capes Trinity and Eternity. Here the ship's siren is sounded and its echoes come rolling back from the forestclad hills, repeated again and again. SAl Y The ship docks at Murray Bay at 6.00 A.M. Early nsers will be ready to go ashore as soon as breakfast is over to see this famous summer resort with its beautiful hotel, the Manoir Richelieu. There is time to inspect the wonderful collection of pictures, and for a swim in the outdoor pool, or for a dnve to see the many fine summer homes. We sail at A.M. (11.00 A.M. daylight saving time) and arrive at Quebec in the afternoon. After a short stop to disembark any passengers leaving here, the New Northland sails on the last leg of the journey. Sl NO Y Montreal is reached at 9.00 A.M., thus concluding this unique cruise to the very outposts of civilization. 9 aapi ~ agal nay ~ ~... - Picturesque Perce, with a glimpse of the fishing fleet. Presently we come to the Gaspe coast where the hills are clad with timber and the shore is dotted with tiny fishing villages. Let's stop and go ashore at one as we do on the real cruise. A fleet of fishing craft lies beached near the breakwater. There are two streets :- one that runs up from the beach to the parish church atop the hill and the other that crosses this thoroughfare at right angles to form the familiar ((shore road." A kindly priest explains to us the hopes and aspirations of his simple flock. An old man who is mending a broken net gives us news of the fishing. Th e grocer who sells us cigarettes remarks that the blueberries are not up to standard this year. W e ask his name. (( Angus MacTavish" he tells us, although he speaks English with difficulty. His ancestor was one of Wolfe's soldiers who, after the conquest, marr i e d a French Perce Rock stands out in bold grandeur. girl. Now only the name remains to remind him of a Scotland he never knew. Just where we leave the Gaspe shoreline to cut away across the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is famous Perce Rock, a weird miniature Gibraltar- a monument to ten thousand years of wind and tide-water. Perhaps we'll pause at Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province, frequently referred to as ((the garden of the gulf." If we do we'll see something of the calm, unhurried life that has made philosophers of so many of the islanders. Prince Edward Island is pastoral beautiful tranquil. Land is dead astern and we are racing across the Gulf to Newfoundland, oldest colony of England. Corner Brook is our destination and we reach it after thirty miles of breathless beauty as we steam through the wondrous Bay of Islands. A view of the mysterious Saguenay River. Newfoundland is different from Gaspe - different from any other land unless, perhaps, one likens it to Norway. H ere is fjord-indented coast with a line so irregular that early explorers thought it was a group of many islands instead of one. Here is a land of rugged strength, unsapped by searing heat. Through deep-chasmed fjords we gain glimpses of a towering, forested hinterland - much of it unknown - all of it unspoiled. Up the rugged coast we go, past Greenly Island with its lonely light- The old outside bake oven is still used in New France. Charlottetown, capital of Prince Edward Island. house, and striking the Labrador Coast at Forteau Bay before entering the Straits of Belle Isle. Then it is but a short run out into the open Atlantic and round the corner to St. Anthony, Newfoundland. (Are you following with your pencil?) This is the home of the famous Grenfell Mission- or rather the headquarters of it, for the mission has posts all through this northland. It was along these shores and among these poor fisher people that the name Grenfell became famous. H ere Sir Wilfred piloted his frail Esquimo kayak through perilous seas to succour the sick- here he bent his head to zero blizzards while his huskies panted through the storm to get supplies where they were needed- here the name of Sir Wilfred Grenfell is revered, and rightly so. But we leave the tiny drydock, the busy m1ss1on craft school and the other evidences of faith and fortitude, to penetrate still farther north- to aweinspiring Labrador- the silent, grim barrier of the Arctic. Who can describe Labrador? Grim and silent and yet fascinating in its austerity, it has been known to man since the days of the Norse vikings, yet always
10 seems to the visitor aloof, as though guarding its secrets from the curious. As we come back along the North Shore, Labrador's rocky grandeur gives way to heavily forested hills, dotted here and there with little fishing villages, fur trading posts, and Indian encampments. Then, gradually re-approaching civilization, we spend a few hours on the mysterious Saguenay River, a little while at fashionable Murray Bay, and so back to Palatial, yacht-like cruise ship, flagship of the fleet of the Clarke Steamship Company, Limited, which carries happy vacationists on cruises to the Gaspe coast, Newfoundland, Labrador, the North Shore and the Saguenay River, fascinating outposts of the land-sheltered Gulf of St. Lawrence. A lonely lighthouse on the little known North Shore. When you go aboard the S.S. New Northland you step into a new, a different World- a World of cruising luxury seasoned by: intimate insights into the life of primitive peoples, rugged scenery and lambent northern lrghts. What memories you will carry away with you! Scenery such as you have dreamed about... long, carefree days of new thrills and goodfellowship... evenings of gaiety and romance... quaint natives and strange lands... perfect service and cosy comfort aboard the truly fine New Northland.. bracing air and new-found health.. a vacation that will always stand apart as the most enjoyable of all. Roomy cabins provide every convenience-hot and cold running water, wardrobe, full length mirrors, etc. An Indian bridal party at Natashquan. Quebec and Montreal, with the vast Northland behind us and our spirits invigorated to take up the daily round again. It is the end of a great experience! COMFORT Cuisine and service are as excellent as the dining saloon is well appointed and attractive. The coal-burning fireplace lends a cheerful note to the smoking room. The spacious lounge is the scene of many interesting events.
