The reason for the designation are as follows: The Metis colony at Buffalo Lake represents one of few known remaining mid-late nineteenth century Metis settlements in Alberta. It consists of at least 89 individual cabin sites near Buffalo Lake, representing a good historic record of Metis life ways during this part of Alberta s history. Information on the Metis settlement is supplemented by the rich

2 source of written journals and letters compiled by the O.B.S., late Missionaries, while living in the settlement. To date, very little historic research on the Metis of Alberta has been completed. The archaeological remains at the Buffalo Lake site are well preserved and have a considerable amount of documented material associated with them. The site contains a great deal of information on mid-late nineteenth century Metis lifestyle and behaviour. The Metis Settlement at Buffalo Lake is one of the most significant known Metis heritage resources in the Province. It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest. Dated July 7, Stan Woloshyn, Minister.
