1 Summer 2015, Week 3 In Print Hello Parents, I cannot believe that we are already ending week three which means we are half way through our summer here at RDC. All this week we have enjoyed our Trick or Treat theme and Friday entailed many fun costumes, prizes, and treats. Your campers have been very busy this week within all of their specialty activities and field trips filled with fun and excitement. As a reminder we have two trips this up coming week. Don t forget that the trip days are switched; grades K-3 will be visiting Chuck E Cheese on Tuesday, July 14th and grades 4-9 will be going to Grand Slam on Thursday, July 16th. Another friendly reminder that half day campers do not attend the full day trips but they are still welcome to attend camp for the regularly scheduled half day hours; they will still be able to engage in structured activities for their morning at RDC. We also have our annual Camp Olympics next week! The children will be placed on red or blue teams on Friday (7/10). So make sure to ask your child what team they are on so we can represent our Camp Olympics throughout the week. Campers will enjoy Olympic themed games and activities as well as watching their leaders battle it out to find out who has the most spirit at RDC! We will be participating in both field games and water sports through out the whole week. With all these activities coming up fast this is a great time to pack plenty of water for your campers they will surely be busy having fun all week! We encourage you all to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns. Our camp phone number is: or feel free to visit the camp office in Radnor Elementary School classroom 25. Welcome to Week 3! Next Week s Theme: CAMP OLYMPICS WEEK! Inside this Issue Specialty Directors Corner...2 Trip Disclosure....3 Swimming Schedule....4 Supplies Needed For Show..5 Important Dates 7/14 Chuck E Cheese K to 3 7/15 Wacky Wednesday! 7/16 Grand Slam 4 to 9 7/17 Funky Friday! Sincerely, Kate Jeffries, Director of RDC Radnor Day Camp Main Office (Camp Cell) Radnor Elementary School - Room 25 Matsonford Road, Radnor PA Radnor Recreation & Community Programming Iven Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087
2 Specialty Directors Corner Reminders! Bring your competitive spirit as we celebrate Camp Olympics! Please remember to send your child to camp each day with a healthy lunch, adequate water, plenty of sunscreen, and rubber soled athletic shoes! Campers MUST wear their Radnor Day Camp t-shirt for all off-site field trips. If you need to pick your camper up early, please send a note in with your camper to make his/ her counselors aware. This way, staff can have your camper ready to go! A Note from Our Aquatics Director! - Mary Beth Ryan Hi Folks! Well, we are half way through RDC! I can't believe it! The kids are settling in well! This week we went over what we have learned so far, streamline & Freestyle, to help reinforce those skills. It's very important that your child has a good pair of swim goggles with them, not only to see but to learn properly. We have started to show the campers the Backstroke. A lot of the younger campers like this, as they don't have to put their faces in the water. Please check the swim schedule each week so that the campers have their swim gear with them on the days that they swim. Have a GREAT weekend!! Groovy Creations in Creative Crafts! - Meredith Mustard We have been wearing our creativity hats and making amazing things from mounds of unlikely materials from bubble wrap to aluminum foil to string to glitter to google eyes and q-tips...and the campers rose to the challenge. Once they began, it was hard to pause to clean up. In between some campers have ventured into making a world mural and creating pipe cleaner figures. Our current project is miniature functional kites. We have exhausted the bead collection making bracelets and still you will see some beading appearing in other projects. Shaved crayon drawings captured the imagination of campers of all ages. I hope your campers are having as much fun this summer as I am spending time with them. We have a couple of big projects coming up and then we will dive into making props for the performance. Stay tuned. There is always more to come. Fit & Fun in Sports and Games! - Lewis Ellis Half way there! All of the campers have enjoyed all of the games that they play in sports and games! This week, I created an obstacle course for the younger campers to run through while the older kids were at CoCo Key on Tuesday. We have started planning the games and events for Olympics next week, which is so exciting! Just a reminder: I am still seeing campers that do not bring water bottles. Having the kids stay hydrated is important when it comes to running around in the heat. Please pack a reusable water bottle (preferably with their name on it) so they can have the maximum amount of fun without getting heat exhaustion. Another reminder; campers need to be wearing sneakers. Sandals are not safe to walk and run around in at camp, especially on the fields and pavements. I want all campers to be safe and have fun! See everyone next week! And remember, wear your Olympic team colors! On Stage & Beyond in Performing Arts! - Meghann Weaver The campers are dancing machines this week at Radnor Day Camp. They are all working on their dances for the end of summer performance of "The Lion King." All of the campers are connecting with their animal instincts and ready to entertain! There has been a lot of teamwork in all of the levels. The campers are working together to make sure that they have every detail in sync. Next week, we will continue with the dances and play some stage presence games to get them ready for an awesome performance. Freeze dance is on a new level in Performing Arts next week! All of the campers will dance until they drop for Olympic points! Turn to page 5 to see what items can be donated for the show! Adventure, Teamwork & Spirit! - Stephanie Murray During week 3 of camp, I had the opportunity to introduce campers to our new activity period, Adventure, Teamwork and Spirit. With each group of campers, we played a variety of games which focused on the concepts of listening, following directions, teamwork and sportsmanship. Over the next few weeks of camp, I look forward to sharing new games and activities with our campers. I hope to find their sense of adventure and inspire them to work hard and cooperate with each other. It is exciting for me to see campers learning and expressing themselves through play and I hope they continue to participate with all of their positive energy!! Lost & Found - Did your camper misplace her lunch bag? Did he leave his towel at the pool? How about that favorite Phillies hat? If so, please come by the RDC main office where we have a number of items that may belong to your camper!
3 Field Trip Disclosure There has been a slight change to our RDC Trip and Event Calendar. Our trips to Chuck E Cheese (Originally on Thursday, July 16th; grades K to 3) and Grand Slam (Originally on Tuesday, July 14th; grades 4 to 9) have swapped dates. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the RDC main office at or the Recreation Department at ext Below, please find the updated calendar!
4 Next RDC For complete details, please refer to the Trip & Event Calendar as well as the Swimming Schedule. Next Week s Theme Monday July 13 Tuesday July 14 Wednesday July 15 Thursday July 16 Friday July 17 Camp Olympics Olympics Opening Ceremony! Chuck E Cheese Grades K 3 Wacky Wednesday! Grand Slam Grades 4 9 Funky Friday! Radnor Day Camp Trips & Events! On Tuesday, Kindergarten through 3rd grade will visit Chuck E Cheese and 4th grade through 9th grade will head to Grand Slam on Thursday! Both are morning trips, so your camper will return to camp for the afternoon. As a reminder, half-day campers do not participate in all day trips. Half-day campers will be allowed to stay all day for the carnival on the last day of camp, Friday, July 31st. No cash/checks will be accepted at camp for RDC trips/food days. All campers who are registered for trips/food days will be attending the trips/participating in the food days. If you do not want your camper attending the trip/participating in the food day, camp staff must be notified in writing before the scheduled trip/food day. Refunds will not be issued under any circumstances. It is the parents discretion whether or not to send spending money with campers on trips days. Camp staff is not responsible for campers money/discretion on spending. If your camper is participating in either of next week s trips, please make sure they are wearing their camp shirt on the trip day. Please remember that drop-off begins at 8:55 am each morning. We do not have staff available to supervise your campers until that time. RDC Swimming Schedule : Week 4 Don t forget to bring a bathing suit and goggles!
