29 PROTAL is a modified acrylic fibre with permanent flame retardant (FR) qualities. Unlike non-permanently FR treated cotton, the protective qualities of PROTAL does not wear out. Nor does PROTAL expose the skin to chemical additives. Alternatives can be more expensive in the long run, because not only do PROTAL garments protect for longer, they also look superior for longer. Safety Flame needs oxygen. PROTAL limits the spread of fire by replacing the oxygen around the flame with other gases that do not burn. PROTAL in its pure form has high FR capabilities, but when blended with cotton or other cellulosics, a synergistic effect takes place between the fibres and the LOI (Limiting Oxygen Index) is improved. Put simply, the FR performance is improved giving an additional safety margin. Durability PROTAL based workwear garments exhibit great resilience even under industrial laundering. At the same time, they can be easily washed at home by users in the normal way. Comfort PROTAL is blended with cotton and similar fibres, as a result the end fabric can provide a level of comfort, softness, air circulation and moisture management not normally associated with protective clothing. Look PROTAL blendability also provides great design and colour possibilities. Cationic dyeing allows for a wide range of bright and strong shades to be acheived, unlike some other fibres. Apart from its FR qualities, PROTAL is impossible to distinguish between non FR garments by look alone. Flexibility To widen its specification, PROTAL can be easily blended with other fibres like cotton, Viloft and anti-static (see panel below), and can also accept performance enhancing treatments such as Teflon.
