82 GOOD TO KNOW What is power? What is efficiency? Power indicates how much heat a stove or inset fire can give off. It is important to choose an appliance with a power ratio that fits the room you like to heat. Too little power, and your room will not be heated. Too much power, and it will give off too much heat, so you will temper the fire and smother it. This will result in soot building on the window, in the combustion chamber and in your chimney. It is also bad for the environment, because more noxious substances will be released. You will obtain the best result when heating continuously at a nominal power value. SAEY offers you a total range of stoves and inset fires with various power types. You will surely find one that will exactly fit your heating needs. SAEY stoves and inset fires guarantee high efficiency. Or simply stated: they will offer much heat with little fuel. A stove with a high efficiency rate will let little heat go to waste. In other words: efficiency is the relation between required energy (fuel) and the delivered warmth. High efficiency also equals a better and more complete combustion, which results in less noxious substances being emitted and less remaining ashes. 83 What is good firewood? What are good coals? For optimal combustion, your firewood needs to be: dry: Allow your wood at least two years of drying time on a well ventilated place. Damp wood will burn much less, because a huge part of the energy is needed to let the water in the wood evaporate. Furthermore, burning wet wood is not only bad for the environment, but also for your stove and chimney. preferably high quality: You might choose hard wood types, such as oak, beech, hornbeam, ash or fruit trees. These will make the nicest flames and the most optimal combustion. Anthracite is the hardest coal type and also the type with the highest efficiency and the smallest emission rate of noxious substances. Anthracite coals with a 20 to 30 mm diameter will guarantee the most optimal combustion. With smaller coals, less oxygen will enter between the coals, which results in a less optimal combustion. 83
