The Tattler Airstream Owners of California Central Coast California 2015 Officers President -Roger Siminoff #2945 Vice Pres. - Pam Lindsay #4585 Secretary - Carol Cunningham #4895 Treasurer - Paula Poll #8252 Past Pres.- John Thornton #2011 One year Directors Karen Jones #1647 Mark Kiger #4608 Two Year Directors Joe Deering #5231 Bruce Yeoman #4917 Membership Director - Gary Mellinger #2002 Web Master - Walt Bremer Tattler Editor - Linda Hollenbeck For more information, including rally coupons, please check out our website: Message from Roger Siminoff, President The summer has been a hot and dry one and the promise of an El Nino this winter and having water fall from the sky (remember that?) is rather enticing. It s a good thing that the folks in Jackson Center put our trailers through their storm room to check for leaks (if you have not been to the Airstream factory to see it in action, you should add Ohio to next summer s travel plans). Our membership program is vitally important to the unit. In fact, each of you - our members - are the very essence of the CCC. To this end, the Board recognized the need to elevate our Membership Director to a Board-level position (which we did back in April) to bring membership issues to the highest level within our organization. For the past several years, Gary Mellinger has been our membership emissary, discovering potential members, welcoming new members, supporting existing members, and everything in between. I m amazed by the job he has done and in awe of the energy he continues to expend for the benefit of our Unit. So, I know I m not alone when I say thank you, Gary! However, it is important that we roll our various 1

tasks through our membership to allow others to participate. Changing roles brings us fresh ideas and allows the former banner-carriers to rest up a bit and enjoy their Airstreams from the inside. So, I totally support Gary s request to take a breather, and we re now looking for someone to step forward and take on the role of Membership Director/Board member. Coming into 2016, this leaves us with two vacancies that need to be filled. Last month, I announced that Linda Hollenbeck needs to hang up her Tattlerpublishing hat, and I put out a request for a volunteer to take over her duties. To date, I ve not heard from anyone. Please let me know if you would like to take on the editor position. And, don t hesitate to contact me if you just want to talk it through. Simply drop me an at roger@siminoff.net or call me at And, I don t dare offer another sentence until I likewise thank Linda for an incredible job driving The Tattler for the past year. Thank you, Linda! The Tattler will go away, and the membership position will go away if folks don t pick up the flag and continue the charge. I m reminded of the old adage: Life is like a cafeteria. There are no waiters to bring success to you, you must help yourself! The CCC is somewhat like the cafeteria. But we, the members, are both the waiters and the patrons, and in order for the CCC to be successful we must raise our hands, volunteer, and participate. On the subject of recruitment, John Thornton is heading up the nominating committee for next year s officers and board members. If you would like to throw your name in the hat for Vice President, Membership, or Two-Year Trustee, John is the one to contact. You can reach him at johnjthornton@gmail.com. Lastly, with membership our number one focus, we posted our Directory to the secured part of the CCC website. The first step in the process was to bring up an Excel spreadsheet so we could get names and contact information available to all. We recognized that reading a spreadsheet on a cell phone or ipad was less than desirable so we are currently in process of changing the Directory to a list format so each member s name, address, and contact information will be easily readable in one view. Walt is working on the conversion, and I m hopeful that by the end of November you ll have an easier-to-read Directory available to you. Thanks, Walt! Here s wishing you cooler and wetter days, and many more incredible trips with your Airstream. Roger 2

A couple of articles on the subject of Trailer vs. a Motorhome Last month we read about the Alaskan adventures of Joe and Myung Deering, this month we get a little more plus a comparison. SHOULD I TRADE IN MY AIRSTREAM FOR A RV? I arrived in Anchorage aler a three night ferry ride, and a drive of about 715 miles on the Alaskan highway to meet Myung, my wife, at the airport. She was not so enthusias>c about the trip as I was, and she especially did not want to take the ferry ride because a cabin was not guaranteed on the trip up, and no way was she going to camp in a tent on the deck of the boat. She is a city girl and never did camping growing up. In fact I think one of the reasons she agreed to buy the Airstream was to avoid me taking her camping in a tent. Beside, she loved the Airstream design. When we met at Anchorage Airport we rented a Class C RV White Box at Clipper ship RV Rentals with the word Yellowstone printed above the cab. I thought that was a strange name for an RV rental place, but they were very efficient and helpful. Although if I had never had experience with my Airstream, I do not know If I would have understood what they were talking about when they were giving me details regarding the sewer and other hook up instruc>ons. The Yellowstone was to be our home for about two and one half weeks. Although I have gone out many >mes with our Airstream Trailer (Eddie Bauer 27L), I had never driven a class C RV. I was immediately impressed with the White Box. The simplicity of not being forced to hook up and unhook the trailer was great. Also compared to our Airstream, backing up into a camping space was a dream. I almost was able to do it without Myung guiding me. Myung gets very nervous when I back the trailer, with good reason, because I have dinged the trailer several >mes parking it on camping trips, and once smashed the front picket fence at home. One of the pickets put a hole in the rear of the trailer. Alaska is a big place with long drives and many miles between rest stops and gas sta>ons. Myung especially appreciated being able to get up and use the bathroom any>me she liked without having to stop the RV. Also if we wanted a snack or a drink she could go to the refrigerator, and pick one up. Also there was an extender [pop out] which went out when we were parked, that made for more space in the camper. As far as driving the Yellowstone, it was very good and very dependable. We ran into a wind storm on the way back and that did cause us some trouble. It was more difficult to keep the RV on the road than it was with the Airstream. On the other hand, when the RV was driving on gravel and rough roads there were no problems With all those advantages why am I not immediately trading in my Aluminum Trailer for a White Box? There is something about the dis>nc>ve styling of an Airstream. No one in the camping area came up to me and asked me how much I paid for my white box as they do almost every >me we take our Airstream out. The Airstream classic design makes it unique. People are aaracted to it. It is unusual enough that Airstreams have been converted to coffee cafes and hotel rooms. But classic design is not the only feature of an Airstream I like. When you are camping it gives you freedom. Just unhitch the trailer and use your tow vehicle to go anywhere you want. In Alaska in order to get anywhere we had to get a cab or walk aler we set up our camp. One night we decided to go to the Bridge Sea Food Restaurant in downtown Anchorage. We called a cab and got there about 8:00pm. It was perfectly light outside because at that >me - in the 8

the summer - in Anchorage the nights are never completely dark. We ate dinner and watched the fishermen catch salmon up and down the river; it was an amazing sight. ALer dinner we decided to walk back to the Creekside Trailer Park where we had parked the Yellowstone RV. ALer all it was light out, so a liale walk aler dinner at in the evening seemed like a good thing. Well, two hours later we were s>ll walking. It was about eleven o clock when we arrived back to the campground. It was very strange because there were no people out on the street at that >me but it was s>ll twilight. It would have been a lot easier if we had our tow vehicle to drive us to and from from the restaurant. Having a trailer gives you the freedom to explore with your tow vehicle. Just unhitch your trailer and off you go. Also a trailer is not as mechanically complicated as a RV. Because an RV has an engine they are harder to fix on the road. Our travel companion, Ray, who brought his Blue Jay RV up to Alaska, con>nued on his trip to Yellowstone and then returned to Seaale aler we flew back to California. While on the freeway approaching Seaale, Blue Jay, sprung an oil leak and the oil went onto manifold. The RV started smoking so aler Ray pulled it to the side of the freeway they had to call the fire department and he was stuck in Seaale for six days wai>ng to get the parts to fix it. I very much enjoyed our trip to Alaska. I have been on both a cruise and an RV camping trip there and the RV trip was much beaer. On the RV trip we got to see what we wanted and were not rushed to get back to the ship. The White Box was fun, but I like my Airstream beaer and would love to take it up there on another trip some day. More thoughts on the subject - by Mike and Roxy Gross We previously owned a Airstream Classic with a slide- out. We sold that rig and bought a 2001 Airstream Land Yacht 396, a 40 diesel pusher. If we had not bought the slide- out model we might s>ll own the trailer, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The problem was the 1,050+ lb. (probably closer to 1,300 lbs. when fully loaded) tongue weight of this rig. It was simply too much for the SUV we used for towing and I was never really comfortable on the road when towing this configura>on. That said, we sold the trailer and bought the motorhome. Once I got used to driving the motorhome I would be hard pressed to go back to the trailer. In the end I m probably as comfortable driving the motorhome as I am a single car. The conveniences of the motorhome on the road are hard to match. We tow a car so it s easy to unhook for day trips and touring. The passenger can prepare food from the refrigerator, get drinks, use facili>es, get up and stretch, etc. all while moving. The storage capabili>es with the motorhome are infinitely greater than a trailer. Is that good? Depends on how much stuff you need or want. With the size of the available water tanks, fuel tanks, house baaeries, solar panels, etc. dry camping is not as limited in a motorhome as with trailers. Again, not necessarily beaer, just bigger, more capacity. One nice side benefit: it s easier to travel distances with the grandkids in the motorhome and have room for them to camp with us. (Cont d) 9

Are there disadvantages with motorhomes? Absolutely yes. Ini>al cost is greater Cost of ownership/use, deprecia>on, mileage (7-9 mpg) Maintenance requirements/cost (i.e.: a set of >es are >$3,000, annual engine maintenance ~$500, etc.). There are more things to break. Once you have your tow vehicle hooked up, you can t back up without unhooking the tow vehicle Many campgrounds have size restric>ons; this can limit where you can park a large motorhome. In the end motorhome vs trailer has more to do with what your preferences are. Both have worked well, allowing us to travel the US, meet new people, get together with friends, and enjoy the camaraderie of the campfire. 10
