2 Workcamps This year, our workcamps will last 2-3 weeks and will take place from May to September. The number of international volunteers in the camp will vary from 6 to 12. If possible, we try to avoid having more than 2 participants of the same nationality in the camp. Usually English is the camp language, but there are some projects where notions of French are necessary (see workcamps' descriptions). Conditions for participation Volunteers should be over 18 year old and there is no maximum age limit. There are no special skills required from volunteers. Participants should be motivated to do voluntary work, be ready to meet the realities of local life and demonstrate flexibility, tolerance and openness to new experiences. There is no extra fee required to participate in our workcamps

More than 80 artistic groups occupy the streets, squares, courts, gardens and theatres over 4 days to offer the best of contemporary Belgian and international creation; inspired by the fairground community. Festival Namur en Mai consists of about forty shows with roughly 300 actors, acrobats, clowns, illusionists, puppeteers, jugglers, story-tellers, magic shows and concerts, bringing life to the city of Namur. The festival offers as many free performances as charged ones. It is accessible to anyone regardless of their means, mobility, or cultural background, and this accessibility is really important for the funders and the organisers of this event. More information on: WORK: Volunteers will be charged with various tasks linked to technical areas and scenography. They will work together in the construction and assembling of tents, decoration of sets, the arrangement of artists and teams' living space, and the loading, unloading, and transport of materials. During the festival, it will be possible for volunteers who desire so to be integrated individually in a team with a specific function (e.g ticket office, the bar) on condition that the volunteer asks in advance. The festival will take place from the 8th to the 12th of May Visits to Namur and the surrounding areas, as well as other activities, will be planned by the

5 host organization during the workcamp. If volunteers wish to visit some other parts of Belgium, they should free some time either before or after the project as they will not have time during the workcamp. Approximate planning: Thursday 2/05: arrivals and welcoming of volunteers Friday 3/05 and Saturday 4/05: visits and activities in the surrounding areas Sunday 5/05: visit to Namur, meeting with the teams from Monday 6/05 to Thursday 9/05: assembling the festival from Wednesday 8/05 to Sunday 12/05: festival from Sunday 12/05 to Wednesday 15/05: taking down the festival Thursday 16/05: volunteers' departure ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will sleep in an ideally located building situated in the heart of the city center, a 5-minute walk from the train station, and just next to the office of les Arts Forains. Beds will be provided as well as showers and toilets. Volunteers should bring a sleeping bag. FOOD: Meals will be taken with the different teams of the festival from the 6th to the 13th of May and will be prepared by the catering team of the festival. The rest of the time, volunteers will have to prepare their own meals in a kitchen provided for them. LOCATION: Namur is the capital city of Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium, and has about inhabitants. It is located at about 60 km from Brussels. SPECIFIC INFORMATION: This workcamp is destined for motivated volunteers who are highly interested by the theme. For the one who want to visit Brussels or another city of Belgium, they need to foresee some time before or after the workcamp because there will be no time during the workcamp. Train timetables on JAVVA02- Red Cross Centre for asylum seekers - Yvoir YVOIR SOCI 8 vols 18+ PARTNER: The centre Pierre bleue in Yvoir is one of the 22 reception centres for asylum seekers managed by the Red Cross in Belgium. The Asylum seekers come from Chechnya, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Iraq, Syria as well as many other parts of world. Some have left their country for economical or personal reasons, while others have fled war or persecution. Many have been separated from their family without any resources or shelter. The Red Cross is mandated for the reception of asylum seekers, and it's work in this area adheres to it's principles of humanity, independence and neutrality. The centres provide the following services : accommodation and food necessary hygienic means support and monitoring on the asylum procedure and a social support medical support compulsory education for minors cultural and sports activities The centre Pierre Bleue can host 120 residents. The diversity and different sizes of the rooms enable this centre to host all kind of family situations : large families, childless couples, single mothers with babies, single men or women, as well as unaccompanied minors. The Infrastructure of the centre enable it to

7 organize the reception of asylum seekers in small common areas which consist of ten bedrooms, a shared bathroom, kitchen, dining room and living room. Residents are therefore given a lot of autonomy as they have to prepare their own meals from ingredients which are distributed by the centre. WORK : The aim of this workcamp is not only to raise volunteers' awareness about migration issues and enable them to have a personal approach to this topic, but also to bring a breath of fresh air to the residents of the centre. The main task of the workcamp will be the planning, organisation and execution of a Raid Cross for Scouts aged between 12 and 16 from the region. This activity will be organized together with unaccompanied minors and workers of the centre. Raid Cross aims at developing an understanding of humanitarian issues, particularly the basic principles and norms of international humanitarian law (IHL). The goal is to playfully practice the respect for other human beings under duress, that is, to treat an adversary fairly and humanely, just as IHL prescribes it. Raid Cross consists of seven fictitious situations to be role-played and is followed by a short debriefing session, in which the animators compare the youngsters' actual reactions with respective IHL norms. Beside this activity, volunteers will join and organize different activities with the children and adults of the centre in order to get to know each other in a friendly atmosphere. Activities such as games, sports, and creative workshops will be therefore organized. ACCOMMODATION: : Volunteers will stay in an independent area inside the centre, where several rooms, a kitchen, as well as showers and toilets will be provided. FOOD: Volunteers will be provided with a kitchen where they will cook for themselves. LOCATION: Yvoir is small village of 8000 inhabitants in a rural area in the Province of Namur. It is located about 30 minutes away from the city of Namur, capital city of Wallonia, the

8 French-speaking region of Belgium. The centre is located in an isolated area in the middle of nature. For more information : SPECIFIC INFORMATION: Volunteers are asked to prove a certain interest for the topic of migration and to be willing to interact with asylum seekers. Experience in animation (games, song, entertainment activities, dance...) will be highly appreciated. A project-related motivation letter is required. Volunteers will have to respect the regulations of the centre. Alcohol is formally prohibited in the centre. LANGUAGES : English, but some notions of French are useful. Train timetables on JAVVA Domaine de Mozet MOZET ENVI 10 vols 18+ PARTNER: Property of the Catholic Guides of Belgium who have restored and maintained it for over thirty years, the Domaine de Mozet is now a place for meeting and lodging and is esteemed by a wide audience of youth groups, schools, and associations. It offers training and recreational activities for young and adult audiences. It is an old castle-farm from the XIth century surrounded by a wooded park covering an area of about 10 hectares. The values of solidarity, respect, and citizenship present at the creation of the domain, as well as the quality of its environment, have become the core principals of the organisation. Over the years, the project has expanded and is now focused on promoting activities that demonstrate an awareness with nature. It is also

9 active in encouraging active participation in society as well as the exhibiting principles of 'eco-citizenship'. The Castle grounds offer a place for visitors to learn how to employ sustainable development in daily life. The infrastructure of the estate offers many possibilities for accommodation, catering, and to generally get in touch with nature. Several rooms of various capacity regularly play host to meetings, conferences, seminars and various other events. More information on WORK: The aim of this workcamp is to set up a storage space for poles used in the construction of the 'Guides camps'. This storage is necessary to avoid the destruction of those poles every year, which is harmful for the environment. The work will consist in digging holes one meter deep in order to store the poles. The remaining time of the workcamp will be dedicated to various renovation works in the park of the Castle grounds (gardening, renovation of the barbecue area or the animals' shelters, the setting up of a signage on an itinerary around the Domain,...). Very physical work! Free time : weekends and evenings. Working hours: from 5 to 6h per day, from 9 am to 4 pm. ACCOMMODATION:: In a dormitory inside the castle. Please bring a sleeping bag. FOOD: Depending on the groups' reservations during the workcamp, volunteers will be either provided with a kitchen, in order to cook their meals themselves, or meals will be provided by the cooks of the Castle (when another group is there). If you follow a special diet, please let us know in advance. LOCATION: Located at about 15 km from Namur, the village of Mozet is situated on the southern slopes of the very beautiful Meuse Valley, dominated by grasslands, farms, groves and forests. This village of 300 inhabitants in the south of Belgium, is very isolated and there is very little access to public

10 transportation. There is no other shop or bar in the village. SPECIFIC INFORMATION: The village is very isolated. There is very little access to public transportation and there isn't any store or bar in the area. This workcamp is destined for nature lovers who are not afraid of physical work in an isolated place. Please bring good working shoes and clothes as well as a raincoat in case of rainy weather. Train timetables on JAVVA04 L Enfance de l'art - eco-construction TEMPLEUVE RENO 12 vols 18+ PARTNER: "L Enfance de l'art", created in 1997, is a no profit organisation whose aim is to help parents to become more involved in their children's education. To that purpose, the organisation set up hosting facilities for children or people with reduced autonomy. leisure workshops, childcare centres, schools. The organisation follows Steiner pedagogy principles. L Enfance de l'art hosts about 80 children from 0 to 12 years old. The kindergarten, the childcare centre, the nursery school and the primary school are recognized by the French-speaking Community of Belgium and the organisation is now established in the former boarding school of Dames de la Providence. These buildings are rented for a very low price before a probable purchase in order to avoid vandalism. They

11 were dilapidated and deserted since 2004 before the parents of the organisation decided to begin renovating them and that's where the workcamp steps in! WORK: In partnership with a construction company focused on social improvement, l'enfance de l'art organises a renovation workcamp in the former boarding school of Dames de la Providence that has hosted for 2 years the new Waldorf school of the French-speaking community of Belgium, as well as in a kindergarten in the first of the 6 renovated buildings. This company uses ecological material and techniques that are in harmony with our environment. Volunteers will work on the renovation of a second building in order for 2 extra classrooms and related premises (toilets, locker rooms, refectory, gardens and offices) to be accessible starting the school year in September They will be asked, according to work progress, to work, in 2 or 3 teams, on different techniques and activities: Application of insulating material (wood wool/clay and straw/hemp and lime) Disassembly of the building and sorting of materials Renovation works in the gardens and the courtyard ACCOMMODATION: In the former boarding school in other non renovated buildings Two showers with hot water and toilets A kitchen and dining area Two dorms It will be in a comfort of a Scout camp. Please bring a sleeping bag. FOOD : Volunteers will be provided with a kitchen where they will cook for themselves. LOCATION: Templeuve is small town 2 km away from the French border, 20 km away from Lille (France) and 10 km away from Tournai. Templeuve has its own market and neighbourhood shops, is connected to Tournai with a bus service (every hour) and has a flat land without relief, making the use of

12 bicycles very easy (a few bicycles will be provided to volunteers). Tournai is a city that attract people who like old stones, History, museums,... Tournai cathedral has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. SPECIFIC INFORMATION: It is a new workcamp, open to anyone interested by sustainable construction techniques. Please bring good working shoes and clothes. LANGUAGES : English TERMINAL : Brussels International Airport (Zaventem) or Brussels South Airport (Charleroi), meeting at Tournai train station on 06/07. Train timetables on JAVVA05 - Red Cross Centre for asylum seekers - Nonceveux NONCEVEUX SOCI 10 vols 18+ PARTNER: The centre L'Ambleve in Nonceveux is one of the 22 reception centres for asylum seekers managed by the Red Cross in Belgium. The centre hosts different kind of family situations : families, childless couples but mostly isolated persons and 24 unaccompanied minors. The infrastructure of the centre enable it to have, beside the usual accommodation facilities, some convivial areas such as a refectory, a library, TV lounges, a games library, a sports hall,... WORK : The aim of this workcamp is not only to raise volunteers' awareness about migration issues and enable them to have a personal approach to this topic, but also to bring a breath of fresh air to the residents of the centre. Volunteers will take part in the community life of the centre and their tasks will consist of, on the one hand, some renovation works in the centre, and on the other hand, the organisation of entertainment activities for adults and unaccompanied minors: renovation works will be carried out together with some residents and supervised by the technical team of the centre. It will consist in light decorating and gardening jobs: painting, refreshing of some rooms, and some small renovation works in the green areas around the centre,... the activities to organize for the residents could include sports activities (beach-volley, soccer,...), social gatherings (musical gatherings, barbecue,...), outdoor activities, creative workshops,... Volunteers are free to propose some ideas of new activities and to organise them if they are within the centre's resources.

14 ACCOMMODATION: Depending on the availability of the rooms during the workcamp (residents regularly leave the centre as others arrive), volunteers will be accommodated either in the available bedrooms or in a common room that will be fitted out for the occasion. Showers and toilets will be provided. FOOD: Volunteers will have their meals in the restaurant of the centre with the residents. If you have a special diet, please let us know in advance. LOCATION : Nonceveux is a small village in the province of Liege, in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. The village is about 30 minutes away from the city of Liege. The centre is located along a river, l'ambleve, and is surrounded by green hills. The centre is very isolated and there is very little access to public transportation. SPECIFIC INFORMATION: Volunteers are asked to prove a certain interest for the topic of migration and to be willing to interact with asylum seekers. Experience in animation (games, song, entertainment activities, dance...) will be highly appreciated. It is a special workcamp: half of volunteers will be youngsters between 18 and 25 years old who live in Belgium and have just completed their civic service. There will therefore be 5 international volunteers and 5 Belgian volunteers. A project-related motivation letter is required. Volunteers will have to respect the regulations of the centre. Alcohol is formally prohibited in the centre. LANGUAGES : English, but some knowledge of French is useful. 15 JAVVA06 - CEMome Holiday camp GEDINNE KIDS 6 vols 18+ PARTNER: Le CEMome is a non-profit organization created in This non-formal educational centre developed after-school activities for children from socially disadvantaged background between 2,5 and 12 years old. The objectives are to support children in their educational development during their free time activities and to help the parents to get more free time. All the year round, CEMome organizes activities in child care centres and during lunch breaks, workshops on Wednesday afternoons (children don't go to school on Wednesday afternoon in Belgium), a homework centre, playgrounds, holiday camps, educational trips,... Objectives of CEMome are: to help parents by organizing activities for their children, allowing them to reconcile their professional life with their private life. to promote children's well-being while having educational goals. to gather all actors who contribute to the after-school area: parents, hosts, social workers, interns, schools, other organizations,... to support values of solidarity and equity and equal opportunities For more information : WORK: Volunteers will help organize a summer camp for 50 children aged from 6 to 12 who come from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. They will prepare meals for the group and will have the opportunity to propose activities together with the social workers leading the camp. Volunteers will spend the first two nights in Brussels to meet the animation team and decide about the menus for the camp. They will then go to the camp location which is about a 2-hours drive

16 from Brussels. A camp preparation will take place on August 12nd and 13th and the children's camp will take place between August 14th and 25th. ACCOMMODATION: In a dorm within the lodging house. Please bring a sleeping bag and a pillow if you need one. FOOD: Meals will be prepared by the volunteers for everybody in the kitchen of the lodging house. LOCATION: Volunteers will spend the first two nights in Brussels to meet the animation team and decide about the menus for the camp. They will then go to the camp place which is about 2 hours away from Brussels. The camp will take place in Louette-Saint-Pierre (Gedinne), a small village in the south of Belgium, close to the French border. SPECIFIC INFORMATION: A basic level of French is expected as activities will take place with children who don't speak English. The camp will take place in a very isolated area and work is quite demanding because meals have to be ready every day at regular hours. This workcamp is destined for motivated volunteers, who like spending time with children and who are willing to interact with them. A project-related motivation letter is required. Volunteers will have to respect the regulations of the camp. 17 JAV V A07 Arthur Regniers Centre children's area BIENNE DISA 7 vols 18+ PARTNER: The Centre Arthur Regniers hosts people suffering from cerebral palsy. The aims of the centre is to provide educational support, health care, and well-being to the students and residents of the centre and also lend support to their families. The centre provides a open-space, various activities, and technical support in order to promote the social, professional and cultural autonomy of the residents. WORK : Volunteers will be asked to attend to the basic needs of the children and the teenagers of the centres (such as helping with the meals,...) and to participate in the organization of artistic and cultural activities together with the centre's staff. They will also have the opportunity to suggest their own activities (such as games, music, recipes,... related to their native country). This workcamp will take place at the same time as JAVVA08 which will focus on the adults of the centre. Breakfasts, dinners, as well as accommodation will be had together with the volunteers of the other camp. ACCOMMODATION: In a common room (dorm) that will be fitted out within the centre. FOOD : Meals will be taken in the centre's refectory and will be prepared by the cooks of the centre. Volunteers will help the residents during meals. Picnics can be prepared and taken away during excursions or activities during weekends. LOCATION: Bienne-lez-Happart is a very small town near Binche and Charleroi. The centre itself is very isolated in the countryside but bicycles, a car, and train tickets will be available*. These means of transportation can be used in the evenings or during the weekends to discover the region and visit other places in Belgium. *Please bring your bicycle helmet and your driver s license, if possible.

A basic knowledge of French is important, as activities will be conducted with children who do not speak a word of English. Train timetables on JAVVA09 - Festival Theatres Nomades BRUXELLES FEST 8 vols 18+ PARTNER: Every summer for 6 years, the Brussels Royal Park hosts more than 60 theatre shows over 4 days for the Brussels theatre festival. The fountain and surrounding area are metamorphosed into a colourful

20 nomad village made of marquees, caravans, Berber tents, and open-air stages. The programme is diversified through various shows for children, a circus, street theatre, classical theatre, puppet shows, as well as creative workshops on the stage of the Royal theatre of Brussels. More information on: or WORK: Volunteers will help on several aspects of the festival logistics, such as assembling and dismantling of tents, building and putting up the decorations, stage-managing, transport and unloading of material, installation of the village of organisations and the catering area. Volunteers will work with all people working on the festival (technicians, stage managers, facilitators, organizers,...). They will also be integrated in the different teams during the festival (tickets, bar, catering, stage-managing,...) which will take place from August 22nd to August 25th Physical work will be asked to volunteers so it is important to take this into account. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to organize an activity in the heart of the festival. ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will sleep in caravans on the site of the festival. The living conditions are rudimentary! Please bring your sleeping bag and sheets. FOOD : Meals will be prepared together with the catering team of the festival. LOCATION: Volunteers will be in the centre of Brussels, the capital of Belgium, at two steps of the Royal Palace. The site is easily reachable by public transport. SPECIFIC INFORMATION: This workcamp requires physical efforts at some moments and a active participation and involvement of volunteers during 2 weeks, due to the deadlines set for the good progress of the festival. There will be only one free day per week! Volunteers should then foresee some time before

21 or after the workcamp if they want to visit many places in Belgium. During the 4 days of festival, volunteers will have the opportunity to set up an activity that will be included in the festival. If you have an musical instrument or juggling material, it will be welcome to contribute to the organization of the activity! Please bring good working shoes and clothes as well as a raincoat in case of rainy weather. A project-related motivation letter is required. The meeting point will be close to Brussels Central train station on 15/08. Train timetables on JAVVA10 Youth Centre BRAINE L'ALLEUD RENO 12 vols 18+ PARTNER: The Youth Centre of Braine-l'Alleud, Le Prisme is a warm and friendly place open to everybody. It's a place to meet, exchange and develop various projects. One of the aims of the no-profit organisation is to promote the cultural identity of every youngster by developing personal and group projects through a participative pedagogy. Its objective is to promote active citizenship among young people. All the year round, le Prisme organises various cultural events: concerts, thematic festivals, theatre shows, art exhibitions, special events,... The idea behind these events is to place the young talents in the spotlight, to stimulate the local cultural life but also to promote youth access to today's culture. More information on : WORK: Within the youth centre, volunteers will

22 carry out different renovation tasks in order to refresh the building and green areas of the youth centre. Concretely, the workcamp will consist in developing outdoor facilities in the garden and other renovation works (painting, sanding, masonry,...). This workcamp will also give to volunteers the opportunity to meet and share their experience with the youngsters from the local community. During free time, volunteers will have the possibility to discover the region and, during the weekends, to visit other cities in Belgium. ACCOMODATION: Volunteers will sleep in an ancient castle near the Youth Centre, located at about 200m from it. Please bring your sleeping bag. FOOD: Lunches will be delivered every day while breakfasts and dinners will be prepared by volunteers in the kitchen of the youth centre. If you have a special diet, please let us know in advance. Train timetables on JAVVA11 Dorlou Farm ELLEZELLES RENO 10 vols 18+ PARTNER: Located in the land of Hills, on the West side of Wallonia, Dorlou Farm has been an organic

23 farm since The managers, Freddy and Chantal, have chosen to produce and offer the fruit of their work directly to the consumers. This choice led to the renovation of the former buildings of the farm. The courtyard is surrounded by a reception, a bakery, a butchery, an organic shop, a cottage and the residence. A campsite and hosting site of groups for pedagogical matters complete the panel of activities developed by the farm. The farm has surface area of 40 hectares, includes cattle breeding, pig, hen and rabbit farming as well as cereal and potato growing and an orchard. More information on : WORK : Volunteers will take part in different renovation activities around the farm among which : dismantling of the roof of the henhouse in preparation for building a new roof, digging trenches in order to prepare the lagooning process, cleaning up two lofts (in the cottage and the barn) in preparation for a reception room. Some tasks will be also related to the regular activities of the farm: apples and/or potatoes harvesting (depending on the season progress), maintaining the orchard, cutting and collecting wood, feeding the animals, collecting the eggs, renewing the animals' litters,... Physical work to foresee! ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be divided between a cottage, a room related to this cottage and a caravan. Please bring a sleeping bag. FOOD : A warm meal will be prepared everyday by Chantal, the manager of the farm. The rest of the time, volunteers will prepare themselves the meals using organic food from the shop within the farm. LOCATION: Dorlou Farm is located in Wodecq, a beautiful village close to the commune of Ellezelles, that belongs to the nature park Land of Hills in the west part of Belgium. This park is located at 70 km from

24 Brussels, 40 km from Ghent and 50 km from Lille (France), is characterized by its hilly aspect and has a strong rural tradition related to witchcraft.
