3 is a modern, vibrant city with a rich and proud heritage. Small wonder it s one of the few UK cities to cater for all tastes and expectations. City When a Historical Society was looking for history and a fabulous time was the obvious choice according to group organiser Lisa Jackson. We d always intended to visit. Then our group became interested in the history of slavery, and we decided to discover more about that great name in its abolition William Wilberforce. So we set off for a weekend away in the colourful waterfront city. The first item on our agenda was the Walking with Wilberforce Tour. Starting from Wilberforce House (where Wilberforce himself was born in 1759, now a fascinating museum), this fabulous guided walk is a great way to discover the Old Town that Wilberforce would have known. Highlights include the remains of the old city wall, which in 1642 saw King Charles I refused entry to the City by the then governor of, Sir John Hotham. This event is believed to have been the start of the English Civil War. Time for a break, so we made a beeline for one of the shopahoy coffee shops for a well deserved cuppa. Suitably refreshed, it was on to Trinity Square with its Holy Trinity Church and the free Hands on History Museum for a glimpse into Victorian. Surprisingly, the museum also hosts an Egyptian Gallery with replicas of Tutankhamun s treasures. After a wonderful meal at one of the shopahoy restaurants, we took our seats at the famous Truck Theatre for an evening of world-class drama before retiring to our hotel for a sound nights sleep. Next day after a stroll in the sunshine around s stunning marina we wandered over to the Streetlife and and East Riding Museums and had a fasinating tour of the Artic Corsair a sidewinder trawler from th 70 s. Starting at the stern of the vessel, the tour took us through the crew accommodation area, into the mess and galley, to the bridge and wheelhouse before going down to the foredeck, into the fishing storage room and finishing back on the foredeck. After freshening up a little in our hotel we headed across to The Deep, a truly impressive aqarium, where we enjoyed a contempory Mediterranean menu with a Yorkshire twist in the stunning Endless Oceans Gallery with magnificent sharks and rays as our backdrop. And to round off our weekend, we just had to stroll through Hepworth Arcade and to our amazement came across a traditional joke shop and several quirky vintage clothes shops which which was us all back to our childhood, a fantastic end to a great weekend. Dine with the sharks! The Two Rivers Restaurant at The Deep is open Friday and Saturday evenings from 19:00. Dine at the restaurant whilst enjoying great views of the stunning aquatic displays.

4 s Historic Highlights Boasting a rich vibrant heritage and streets full of history, our city boasts an array of highlights and attractions for your group to explore! Make sure you don t miss the splendid Queen Victoria Square, the grand main plaza encompassing The City Hall, Maritime Museum and Ferens Art Gallery. The Deep takes you on a mesmerising journey from the beginning of time to the future of deep sea research. Step into the viewing tunnel and come face to face with sinister grey reef sharks (if you dare)! The Maritime Museum is always popular see the whaler s craft of Scrimshaw, marvel at the amazing artefacts and don t miss seeing the whale skeleton. 5 When a ladies social group set off to explore the Yorkshire Wolds, organiser Betty Sawyer knew there would be something for everyone. My ladies are a lovely group, but finding destinations to please everyone is not always easy! So when we set off one morning for two days away in the East Yorkshire Wolds, I was feeling a little nervous. I shouldn t have they all had a ball! First stop, Beverley. This medieval town is so pretty with its market cross and ancient streets. We headed for the famous Minster. What a sight! This Gothic masterpiece really is a symphony in stone, with an atmosphere all of its own. As it was a lovely day, we embarked on a self-guided tour of the new Elwell Trail, discovering the remarkable paintings of famous local artists Fred & Mary Elwell as we meandered through the town centre. After a rest in our hotel, we headed out again to find a lovely little restaurant nearby which served the most delightful food. Next morning we set off early for the gorgeous Sledmere House. My ladies simply adored the wonderful hallway and Music Room. Do look out for the sumptuous Turkish Room, too it was inspired by a Sultan s apartment! Then it was time for a walk around the lovely parkland before taking tea in the Terrace Café. A host of Farmers markets throughout the Wolds provide an abundance of local produce and crafts We made our way to Driffield and the Farmers Market. We were lucky it only opens on the first Saturday of every month but the beautiful produce and home-baked cakes were simply irresistible. What a great way to round off our trip! Yorkshire Wolds Highlights Let your group escape and explore a delightful new world by taking them to one of England s most tranquil and historic landscapes full of ancient market towns, stately homes and rolling hills. 6 The Yorkshire coast is a place of contrasts. From award-winning beaches and classic seaside resorts to towering chalk cliffs and world famous bird colonies, the Heritage Coast is one of East Yorkshire s natural jewels. Coast A ramblers club decided to swap their country outings for a weekend at the coast. Choosing was a no-brainer, according to club member John Hughes. We re an active lot, us ramblers. So when we made up our minds to try a weekend at the coast, jumped out at us. It was a very good choice, too. We re all bird lovers, so we booked the Seabird Spectacle package and duly turned up at s pretty harbour where we boarded the Yorkshire Belle for a cruise along the coast to the magnificent chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head. You ve never seen as many puffins and kittiwakes they literally filled the sky! After pausing for lunch in, we chugged back to settle into our B&B (all very nice and clean, and terrific value too). We all met up again at tea time and strolled around the harbourside before settling upon a nice little restaurant. A lovely way to round off our first day. We re an active lot, us ramblers. So when we made up our minds to try a weekend at the coast, jumped out at us. It was a very good choice, too. Next morning, we took a guided tour of s Old Town. None of us had realised quite what a fascinating place this was with its narrow twisting alleyways and historic buildings. First off we trooped into the ancient Priory Church of St Mary s. Dating from 1113AD, it was originally part of one of England s leading priories and crammed with historic features. Next we visited the Bayle Museum formerly the gatehouse to the priory and well worth a look. Then we spent a very pleasant hour or two strolling around the many art galleries and quirky independent shops (not to mention the occasional pub!) that populate the Old Town centre. And with tummy s rumbling and the trip coming to a close, what better way to finish off than a bag of freshly caught fish and chips at Spa. Grand! 10

Beverley Elwell Trail With support of the Beverley Civic Society, the Elwell collection has been liberated from the confines of the gallery walls! Born in Beverley in 1870, the painter Fred Elwell trained at the Lincoln School of Art and the academies in Antwerp and Paris before returning to his home town. In 1914 he married the accomplished artist Mary Dawson Holmes and the couple settled at Bar House, North Bar. The town and townspeople of Beverley were a constant source of inspiration for both Fred and Mary. The guide and map created to accompany this walk is available from Beverley Tourist Information Centre for just 20p. Beverley Beverley 20 The Beverley 20 is a walking route devised by Glen Hood of the Ramblers Association which links the Humber Bridge with Beverley Minster. The walk is linear in nature and marked with orange waymarkers as it makes its way along the Humber foreshore, through woodlands, valleys and fields that make up the South of the Yorkshire Wolds. The route is 20 miles long starting at the Humber Bridge and following the Humber before heading north across the Wolds to Skidby Mill, through the Parkland at Risby and finally across Beverley Westwood. Snacks are available at Hessle Foreshore and there are many pubs and shops in Beverley itself. Beverley Town Tour Central to the history of the town are its trade guilds which made Beverley one of the wealthiest towns in medieval England. St Mary s was the church of the majority of the guilds and their influence is ever present in the rich and varied carvings which decorate this church and the Minster. A fascinating story about the medieval period in general and Beverley in particular is told through the history of the guilds, the surviving records of which detail their structures and traditions. It says much about their methods that the forefathers of surgeons and dentists belonged to the guild which included dyers, barbers, armourers and cutlers. Walking tour only.
