1 THE SHINING Story Beats by D. McClellan 1. ARRIVAL OPENING - Baroque and haunting music accompanies panoramic helicopter shots of a car winding itʼs way up a narrow Rocky Mountain pass beneath the opening credit scroll. 2. THE INTERVIEW - Jack Torrance arrives for his interview with Mr. Ullman at the Overlook Hotel in the remote mountains of Colorado. Ullman asks Bill Watson to join the meeting. 3. BACK IN DENVER - Jack's son, Danny, asks his mother, Wendy, if she is going to enjoy staying at the hotel for the entire winter. a. Danny's "imaginary friend," Tony, doesn't want to go. i. Wendy assures him that they will have a good time. 4. HOTEL PAST BACKSTORY REVEALED - Ullman explains the hotel shuts down during the winter months because of high costs to maintain the roads during the snowfalls and that there is no skiing on this mountain. Ullman describes Jack's job description of hotel maintenance. Jack revels in the isolation and solitude of this job, telling them that he is a writer and that the months of solitude is just what he needs. Ullman then describes the tragedy of The caretaker, Delbert Grady, experienced a mental deterioration and killed his wife, two girls and himself. Jack reassures Ullman that he is responsible and that his wife will get a kick out of it being a ghost story fan. 5. VISIONS OF HORROR - Danny talks to Tony in the bathroom. Tony predicts that Jack got the job and is about to call Wendy to tell her the news. Jack calls Wendy and reports that he got the job and will be home late. Danny asks Tony what the problem is with the hotel. Tony refuses to tell him, then in a series of flashes, Danny sees blood pouring out of the Overlookʼs elevators intercut with two girls standing in the hallway staring at him, then cut up in pieces. 6. EXAMINATION BY DOCTOR - Danny wakes up to a doctor who examines him. He can't remember what he saw and doesn't want to talk about Tony, the little boy who lives in his mouth and hides in his stomach. Wendy and the doctor leave his room to discuss the matter. 7. WENDYʼS REVEAL - The doctor assures Wendy that Danny is physically fine. The doctor proposes hypnotherapy if these episodes continue. Wendy explains that Tony appeared after Danny had trouble adjusting to nursery school. She further explains that Jack, after drinking too much, once dislocated Danny's shoulder by pulling his arm too hard. Jack promised never to drink again. 8. CLOSING DAY: Jack, Wendy and Danny drive up to the hotel. Jack tells the story of The Donner Party: a group of settlers who became snowbound one winter and resorted to cannibalism to survive. 9. Work crews clean up the hotel. Ullman greets Jack - gives Jack and Wendy a tour of the hotel lobby. 10. GHOSTS - Danny throws darts in the game room. He sees the ghosts of the two dead girls. The girls look at each other and walk out of the room. 1

2 ACT Ullman gives Jack and Wendy a tour of their apartment. Jack and Wendy agree that it looks comfortable. Ullman shows them the maze of hedges outside, the snowcat and the ballroom. Dick Halloran, the head cook, greets the Torrances. Danny joins them all in the ballroom. 12. SHINING REVEALED - Halloran shows Wendy the huge kitchen and the walk-in freezer. Wendy wonders how Halloran knew that Jack and Wendy sometimes call Danny by his nickname, "Doc." Halloran supposes that he overheard it. Halloran shows Wendy the dry goods store room. Danny alone hears Halloran ask him if he wants ice cream. Jack and Ullman meet up with them again. Halloran is left with Danny and asks him if he wants ice cream. 13. SHINING EXPLAINED - Halloran tells Danny that they both share the gift of the "shine," the ability to predict the future and talk to others without opening your mouth. Halloran is worried about Tony who shows Danny things but orders him not to tell anyone about it. Danny feels that something is bad about the Overlook Hotel. Halloran explains that the hotel does have a strange personality all its own. Halloran further explains that those with the gift of the shine often can see glimpses of the past, as well as the future. Danny asks about room 237. Halloran warns him to stay out of that room. 14. A MONTH LATER: Wendy pushes the breakfast cart to their apartment. Danny drives his big wheel through the lobby. Wendy wakes up Jack for breakfast. Jack hopes to finally get some writing done. Wendy remarks that she's getting used to the hotel. Jack loves it and remarks that he felt a strange sense of deja vu when he arrived there. 15. Jack's typewriter remains unused. Jack throws a ball against a hotel wall. Wendy and Danny explore the hedge maze. Inside, Jack stops throwing the ball and stares at a model of the hedge maze. He watches two tiny figures walking inside the maze. 16. TUESDAY: Wendy prepares dinner in the kitchen. The television report predicts a huge snowstorm blowing into the Colorado area. 17. Danny rides his big wheel down the hallways. He stops and stares at room 237. Danny tries to open the door but itʼs locked. He sees the two dead girls again and rides away. 18. Jack writes in the lobby. Wendy joins him. Jack is very evasive about his work. Wendy tells him about the snowstorm. Jack reprimands her for interrupting his concentration. Jack makes a new rule that Wendy can no longer enter the lobby while he's working and verbally berates her. 19. THURSDAY: Wendy and Danny play in the snow. Jack stares with a despondent grin. 20. SATURDAY: Jack works in the lobby. Wendy discovers the phone lines are dead. Wendy uses the shortwave radio and talks to a forest ranger. The ranger advises to keep the radio on at all times and not to expect the phones to work for the rest of the winter. 21. GHOSTS 2 - Danny rides his big wheel down a hallway. He sees the two dead girls. They invite him to play with them. Danny sees glimpses of the two girls mutilated and lying dead in the hallway. They want to play with him forever (REVEAL MOTIVE OF ANTAGONIST). The girls are gone again. Danny tells Tony that he's scared. 2

3 22. MONDAY: Wendy and Danny watch television. Danny wants to retrieve his fire engine from his bedroom. Although Jack is sleeping, Wendy reluctantly gives her permission. Danny promises to be quiet. 23. Danny quietly enters the apartment. Jack sits up in bed. He asks Danny to sit and talk with him. Jack holds him. Danny asks Jack if he feels bad. Jack confesses that he can't sleep. He loves the hotel and wants the stay there forever. (PARALELL REVEAL OF GHOST MOTIVES). Danny asks if Jack would ever hurt Wendy and him. Jack promises never to hurt him. 24. WEDNESDAY: Danny plays with his toy cars in the hallway. A ball rolls to him. Danny investigates the hallway. Room 237 is open. Danny enters. 25. Wendy adjusts the electricity in the boiler room. She hears Jack scream. Wendy runs into the lobby and wakes up Jack. Jack tells her about his nightmare where he killed Wendy and Danny. Danny walks into the lobby where Wendy discovers that Danny's neck is bruised. She blames Jack and runs away. MIDDLE OF ACT 2 JACK POSESSED 26. GHOST 3 - Jack walks down the hallway enraged. He enters the ballroom and walks up to the bar. Jack wishes he could have a drink. He discovers Lloyd, the ghost of an old bartender, standing behind the bar. Jack orders bourbon. Jack drinks to five miserable months on the wagon. He wishes things could be better with his wife. He insists that he didn't lay a hand on Danny. Jack is angry with Wendy for never letting him forget about Danny's shoulder accident. (REVEAL) 27. Wendy runs through the hallways with a baseball bat. She finds Jack alone in the ballroom. She tells him that a crazy woman in room 237 tried to strangle Danny. Jack thinks Wendy's crazy. 28. In Miami, Halloran watches the news reporting record snowfall for Colorado. He suddenly sees a terrible vision. Danny shakes in his room as he sends Halloran the message. (SHINING 2) 29. ROOM 237 REVEALED - Jack investigates room 237. The ghost of Grady's wife steps out of the bathtub. She is naked and beautiful. Jack kisses her. In a mirror, the woman turns old and decaying. He lets go. The old woman cackles and grabs for him as Jack runs out of the room and locks the door. 30. Halloran tries to phone the Overlook Hotel, but the phone lines are down. 31. JACKʼS BIG LIE - Wendy waits for Jack in the apartment. Jack arrives and tells her that he found nobody in the room. He consoles Wendy. Wendy wonders about Danny's bruises. Jack tries to convince her that Danny did it to himself. Danny listens to the conversation in his bedroom. Wendy wants to leave the hotel. Danny sees a sea of blood in the hallway. Jack gets angry. His work is finally going great and he's not going to let Wendy ruin it. 32. Jack causes a mess in the kitchen. He hears music and sees party favors in the hallway. 33. Halloran phones the forest ranger to contact the Torrances by shortwave radio to see if everything is all right. The ranger promises to contact them. 3

4 34. THE GHOST BALL - Jack enters the ballroom. It is filled with people and music from the 1920's. He orders another bourbon from Lloyd. Lloyd refuses his money and gives him the drink. Jack dances alone. A waiter accidentally spills a tray of drinks on him. 35. GRADY (ANTAGONIST PLOT REVEALED) - They enter the bathroom to remove the stain from Jack's jacket. The waiter announces that he's Delbert Grady. Jack recalls Grady was the caretaker who killed his family. Grady denies it. Grady insists that Jack has always been the caretaker and that he has always been the waiter. Grady then warns Jack that Danny is using his talent to summon a black cook to stop him. Jack blames Wendy. Grady suggests that Jack speak to them. When Grady's wife and children resisted him, Grady says he "corrected" them. 2/3 THROUGH ACT 2 JACK GIVEN A TASK BY GRADY CORRECT (KILL) YOUR FAMILY 36. WENDYʼS PLAN - Wendy paces in her bedroom and plans their escape. In his sleep, Danny yells "redrum." Tony tells Wendy that Danny can't wake up and has gone away. Wendy hugs Danny. 37. Jack hears the distress call from the fire service. He turns off the shortwave radio. Halloran calls the fire service again. The ranger promises to try again AM: Halloran flies to Denver. Jack works in the lobby. Halloran's plane lands. Halloran phones his police friend and orders a snowcat to get to the hotel. Halloran drives through the snow. 39. Wendy and Danny watch television. Wendy tells him that she wants to talk to Jack for a minute. Tony understands. Wendy leaves the room. 40. Wendy searches for Jack in the lobby. She carries a baseball bat. Wendy reads Jack's script. He has typed the same phrase over and over again for thousands of pages. Jack pops in and asks her if she likes it. Wendy fumbles, a nervous wreck and can't remember what she wanted to ask Jack. Danny listens from his bedroom. He sees the sea of blood again. Jack and Wendy argue about what to do with Danny. Jack yells at Wendy for jeopardizing his moral responsibility to look after the hotel. Wendy backs up the stairs in fear. Jack presses her telling her he doesnʼt want to hurt her - just bash in her brains. Wendy hits Jack over the head with the bat. He tumbles down the stairs. 41. Wendy drags Jack into the store room and locks the door. Jack revives and bangs on the door. Wendy grabs a knife. Jack pleads with her to open the door. He then whimpers to her pretending to need a doctor. Wendy promises to send a doctor after she returns to town with Danny. Jack turns mad again and taunts her to check out the shortwave radio and the snowcat. 42. Wendy runs outside and checks out the sabotaged snowcat PM: Jack is passed out in the store room. A knock on the door wakes him. Jack massages his injured leg. Grady calls to Jack. He taunts Jack that his heart is not in this situation. Jack wants to prove himself. Grady wants Jack to deal with Wendy in the harshest way. Jack promises to take care of Wendy. Grady opens the door for Jack. 4

5 ACT Halloran drives to the hotel in his snowcat. 45. Danny, now as Tony, paces around the bedroom with chants of "redrum with a knife. With Wendy's lipstick, he writes "redrum" on the door. Wendy wakes up. In the mirror, she reads "murder." Jack uses an axe to break down the door. Wendy and Danny run into the bathroom and lock the door. Wendy pushes Danny through the window. She tries to pull her own body through the window, but she is too big. She tells Danny to run away and hide, then grabs a knife. Jack breaks through the door with his axe. Wendy slices Jack's hand with the knife. 46. Halloran approaches the hotel. Jack and Wendy hear the motor of the snowcat. 47. Danny runs into the kitchen and hides in a cupboard. Jack, with a pronounced limp, stalks the hallway with his axe. Wendy, realizing Jack's gone, opens the bathroom door. 48. MURDER - Halloran enters the hotel. Jack stalks the hallway. Jack kills Halloran with his axe. Danny screams - Jack sees Danny run out and chases him. 49. DARK NIGHT OF SOUL - Wendy searches for Danny in the apartment. She hears strange voices. In the far bedroom, she sees Grady and other GHOSTS dressed in an animal costume. Wendy runs away. 50. Jack stalks Danny to the main hotel doors. Danny runs from his hiding spot into the hedge maze. Jack follows his footprints in the snow. 51. Wendy searches for Danny in the hotel lobby - finds Halloran's dead body. She turns to see Grady, with blood on his face, he raises a glass to toast her. Jack continues to stalk/chase Danny. Wendy runs into an unused room and finds neatly dressed skeletons sitting in chairs. Danny carefully steps back into his tracks. Wendy runs into a hallway and sees Dannyʼs first vision: a sea of blood flowing from the elevators. 52. HEDGE MAZE SET PIECE - Danny hides from Jack. Jack follows the tracks and finds that they mysteriously end. He calls to Danny, swinging his axe. Danny OUTSMARTS THE HOTEL he emerges from his hiding spot and follows his own tracks back out of the maze. Wendy and Danny reunite. Jack stumbles in the cold night air howling like a madman. Wendy and Danny climb into Halloran's snowcat and drive away. Jack yells and collapses. CONCLUSION NEXT MORNING - Jack is frozen to death. 53. END TAG REVEAL -- Photographs on the wall recall the glory days of the Overlook Hotel. The camera tracks in focusing on one photograph showing Jack in a tuxedo presiding over the July 4th ball in
