2 Special Events by Susan Maltby Friday June 3 rd 9am Denver Botanic Gardens visit and lunch. Join us as we visit the Denver Botanic Gardens and see the sculptures of Allan Houser amongst the gardens. He is a Chiricahua Apache from Oklahoma who blends Native American realism with abstract modernism. This is a great way to gain inspiration for your own garden or just enjoy a peaceful stroll. We will have lunch in the gardens at the Monet Café. The cost for the gardens and exhibit is $12.50 for adults or $9.50 for seniors (65+) or military ID. I will not collect money in advance as we will pay at the gate. We will carpool from the Woodman Park & Ride, leaving at 9am. If you would like to join us, either call me ( ) or me at svmaltby@gmail.com. Any questions, call Susan Maltby Saturday June 4 th 7pm America the Beautiful Barbershop Chorus. They will present their spring show at Rampart High School. The theme for the show is Pirates of the Colorado and is sure to be both musically amazing and hilarious. Our own Jim Campbell is part of the chorus. The tickets are $15 adults and $12 seniors (55+) if purchased in advance. If we have 10 or more they are $10 each. We can plan to meet ahead of time for an early dinner. If you would like to attend, please call me or me at svmaltby@gmail.com. We will need a head count by May 31st. Saturday July 9 th 1pm Cripple Creek Butte Opera House Melodrama. We will all stop at noon for a beach lunch together. If that is all you want to do, you will be bussed back to the office and can go home. The rest of us will continue on down the river and to through the Royal Gorge. This half of the trip can have up to class IV & V rapids and is the most fun. The last few times we tried this, we have been unable to go through the Gorge, but since we are going later in the season, there should be no problems with the water level. 3 From the Prez by Frank Capece At the last club pot luck dinner meeting at the Campbell s house on May 11, the following slate for the Board of Directors was voted into office: President Frank Capece Vice President, Membership Landon Phillips Treasurer Mary Kervick Secretary Dick Toner Activities Director Susan Maltby Hiking Director Jim Thatcher Ski Director Barbara Capece Also, DixieLee Toner will be the new coordinator for the dinner meetings; Pat Beck continues as the coordinator for golf; and John Davenport continues to coordinate biking activities. Thanks for electing me as the next club President. I hope to do as well as past Presidents. The club is important to me. The best decision Barbara and I made after moving to Colorado Springs was joining this club. We ve made many new and interesting friends and we want to see the club continue to thrive. My goal this year is to get more members actively involved in the club and to increase participation in club activities. We don t want to become stale. We need membership input to improve wherever we can. Contact me or any other Board member if you have an idea to improve the club. An interesting event or activity you think would interest club members, call or Susan Maltby.; a skiing suggestion, call or Barbara Capece; a new restaurant for a monthly meeting, call or DixieLee Toner; an interesting hike, call or Jim Thatcher; a biking adventure, call or John Davenport. We re all here to serve you. Golf by Pat Beck Any golfers that wish to be on our golf list please me at patbeck3344@comcast.net We usually play every Monday around 9:00 a.m. at Cherokee Ridge GC (Palmer Park and Powers). I send out notices of our tee times and those who reply to me before Fridays can be on the list to play. At times we do go to other courses like Patty Jewett and Peterson Air Force Base Golf Course, just to shake up our routine. You do not have to be a pro, we are varied in skills. Some of us don t even keep score. Others hit the ball for miles (maybe not really that far, but pretty far)
4 Ski Corner by Barbara Capece I am looking forward to assuming the role of your next ski director. We have a great program in place that offers our OTHG members an opportunity to enjoy several days of skiing to our beautiful nearby resorts, sharing a ride together to and from the slopes. Our contract with Fort Carson which provides us with their vans and drivers has been a very safe and successful operation. We have had great participation on our ski trips, everyone enjoying a day of skiing without the hassle of having to drive. We hope that more OTHG members will join in the fun and sign up to take advantage of this convenience. We had a great season in with Mother Nature providing us with an abundance of SNOW the deep, fluffy powder we love to play in. So it s not too early to set our sights on the season. Next month I will be asking you to take a few minutes to complete a survey while this past season is still in your recent memory. I will use your responses to set up our ski trips for next season based on where the majority of you would prefer to ski. Your opinions do matter. So check your boxes next month for my Survey Monkey. Mid Winter Ski Trip Although it's early in the summer and the most recent ski season just ended, it's nearly time once again to make your reservations for the Arrowhead Village / Beaver Creek ski trip. This years trip will be from February 6, 2012 through February 10, Landon Phillips is again in charge of this trip, and he will be sending out reservation information by on June 1, The reservation period will be from June 1 through July 1.
