The Cutting Edge In this month s Newsletter: President s Message p. 1 OLMC General Meeting January Auction p. 2 MiG Meeting Central Metasedimentary Belt p. 2 Note to all Members p. 3 Þrídrangaviti Lighthouse p. 4 The Old Man of Storr p. 6 OLMC Classified p. 8 Workshop calendar p. 9 Membership form p. 10 Workshop Address: 1000 Brookfield Road, Ottawa Mailing Address: Room #22, 1000 Brookfield Road Ottawa, ON K1V 6J1 Phone: GEMS (4367) Website: Facebook: OttawaLapsmithMineralClub Monthly Newsletter of the Ottawa Lapsmith and Mineral Club OUR RESIDENCY AT 1000 BROOKEFIELD IS PROBABLY COMING TO AN END! The city has told our landlord the Campanelle corporation that 1000 Brookfield needs $700,000 in repair work. The Campanele Corporation has leased the entire building to a third party effective May 1, The third party will pick up all renovation expenses. The third party wishes to completely renovate the school and reopen it as a private school effective Sept 01, I will be meeting with the third party in early January. It is unlikely that they will want us to stay. They will control common area, renovation and maintenance expenses and can easily make it unaffordable for us to stay. Bottom line we need a new shop location. We have 4 months, perhaps a little more, to move and set up somewhere else. If anyone knows of a suitable venue, preferably centrally located, our monthly budget is $2,600. We currently have ~1200 ft2 (including the storage unit) and that is tight. The Campanele corporation will help us find a new venue but they are not responsible for doing so. Please contact Kerry with any details. We will be auctioning off bits of two saws at the January auction. The blue 18" in the saw room will be auctioned off. It will be missing the blade and has a bent shaft. The old 10" saw base that was next to the sink will also be auctioned off. It has been stripped of motor, blade and belt (we now have a new saw in its place). A reminder that workshop fees have increased to $90/year or $3/visit. Course fees are now $60. Dealer fees will also be going up in I have rebuilt the bases of the four little saws and have added on/off switches. Please do not unplug! The new saw has a new motor and a larger pulley, thus, the blade spins faster than before. Please treat with care and caution. Kerry Day Newsletter Editor: All members are invited to submit articles, proposals, or any thoughts that could be included in the newsletters. Also, feel free to send your Classified ads by to: News@OLMC.ca Stéphane Jetté, OLMC Newsletter Editor
OLMC s January Auction Thursday, January 10, 2019, 7:30 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Location: OLMC Workshop 1000 Brookfield Road, Ottawa, ON The auction list is still being set. All members are welcome to offer relevant items for sell at the auction; in such case, 20% of the selling bid price goes to the Club, and the remaining 80% goes to the owner. OLMC auction are a good occasion for the Club to sell used material and extra rocks. Club Meetings! We all meet to share our knowledge and interest about gems, mineral, and jewellery! For details or comments please contact: pres@olmc.ca We encourage all of you to attend and bid knowing that the money collected goes to the Club! Meanwhile you can acquire useful material and tools, which will include many rocks, saws, a polisher, a rolling mill, a ring sizer, a jewellery steam, and many more! A piece of southern Ontario the size of Switzerland moved toward Sudbury ~1 billion years ago: how do geologists read this in the rocks today? Monday, January 21, 2018, 7:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m. Location: OLMC Workshop 1000 Brookfield Road, Ottawa, ON Dr. Hanmer will talk about the NW boundary of the Central Metasedimentary Belt (CMB), and how it is exposed in southern Ontario from Minden, via Haliburton, Bancroft, Combermere and then north to Baskatong (QC). It marks a major fault zone along which the CMB, the size of Switzerland in Ontario alone, was displaced northwestward toward the Sudbury region over 1 billion years ago. We will take an illustrated field trip through the rocks of the CMB boundary to see how geologists are able to observe and interpret the traces of these gigantic earth movements by simply looking at the rocks we see by the road-side today. 3 Jordan, one of our newest members, and Ana, showing their flat lapping skills! Note: Members of all age are welcome to be part of the Club; however, at least one parent or official custodian, who is also an experienced Member, needs to always be close to them to ensure that they do not use or touch any tools or material that could be harmful to them. Otherwise, it is always fine to smile and be proud of our work! If it is not done yet: 2019 Membership is to be renewed and paid at the latest by January 31, 2019! Locker users need to pay their locker fee, at $25 per year. And, newsletter advertisement is also due. Prices increases starting January 1 st, 2019: Workshop fee will be $3 per visit (up from $2). 4 A lonely beacon, precariously perched atop a remote sliver of rock. Adapted from: A cluster of slender rock pillars jut out from the ocean s surface like fingers stretching toward the sky, miles away from civilization. From a distance, it looks like a colorful speck has settled atop the largest one. Look closer, and you ll see it s a tiny red-roofed lighthouse, perhaps one of the loneliest in the world. The whitewashed lighthouse is perched atop the tallest of the rocky cliffs, which stretches an impressive 120 feet upward. I t s off the coast of the Westman Islands, which themselves are about 4.5 miles from mainland Iceland. Because of its isolation, some on the internet have jokingly dubbed the beacon a haven for introverts. The remote lighthouse was built right before the dawn of World War II. Constructing this lonely lighthouse was no easy task, as helicopters had yet to take to the skies when the work began in Builders scaled the cliffs to reach the pillar s pinnacle, laying out the groundwork by hand. They faced slick rocks, rain, and fervent winds knowing that one slip could send them plunging into the frigid North Atlantic Ocean that thrashed and splashed below. OLMC s monthly newsletter January 2019 Page 4
Now, thanks to advances in aviation, maintenance workers can take a helicopter to the far-flung beacon. Yet even still, visiting the Þrídrangaviti lighthouse is a daunting endeavor. One wrong step, and any unsuspecting explorers just may find themselves going for an unplanned swim with the killer whales that sometimes lurk within the waves. Know Before You Go The Þrídrangaviti lighthouse is also known by variations of this name, such as Thridrangaviti or Thridrangar. OLMC s monthly newsletter January 2019 Page 5
Adapted from: An ancient Scottish rock formation said to be the gravesite of a giant remains ensconced in legend and intrigue. The Old Man of Storr juts out of the undulating terrain like an igneous shard of mythological proportions. A tentpole of the rugged vistas that characterize the Isle of Skye, this point of interest in the Scottish Highlands is a site of folkloric mysticism and natural grandeur. Situated atop Trotternish Ridge a peninsula in the northeastern region of the Isle of Skye, created as the result of a colossal landslip the Old Man of Storr is a 160-foot pinnacle rock formation named after its likeness to, well, an old man. The Storr, which refers to the group of looming outcrops that include and surround the Old Man, is a title derived from the Norse word for Great Man. Legend has it that the Old Man of Storr was a giant who resided on the Trotternish Ridge. When he was laid to rest upon his death, his thumb the Old Man remained partially above ground. The Old Man of Storr towers over the Sound of Rasaay at an elevation of more than 2,300 feet, and a hike up the grassy mounds toward the group of curious pinnacle rocks that surround the Old Man provides magnificent, panoramic views of the water and the surrounding mainland. The raw, bucolic landscape of the Storr and the encompassing hiking circuit known as the Quiraing, have landed the Old Man several movie features, including The Wicker Man (1973), Prometheus (2012), and Snow White and the Huntsman (2012). OLMC s monthly newsletter January 2019 Page 6
Know Before You Go The Old Man of Storr is a six-mile drive from the neighboring port village of Portree, the largest settlement on the Isle of Skye. You can walk up and down the Storr on a 2.3-mile (3.8-kilometer) route that takes roughly one hour and 15 minutes to complete. OLMC s monthly newsletter January 2019 Page 7
