1 The Dunolly and District Community News The Welcome Record Volume 33 Issue 12 Wednesday 4th April 2018 Donation: 50c Rheola Carnival - A Great Success The Easter carnival was held at Rheola this year for the 148 th time: quite an impressive record and tradition! This year the weather Gods smiled and gave us a perfect day. With events happening all around the grounds there was something for everyone. The Carnival has become a family event for us and judging by the groups of people, young and old enjoying the sunshine and entertainment, many extended families make it an annual event. For an entrance fee of $8 the entertainment is varied and extensive! My favourite is always the Sheep Dog Trials: a real battle of wills between dog and sheep. Mostly, the superior brain power of the wonderful Kelpies triumphed over the silly sheep, however there were one or two sheep who got the better of the dog, at least temporarily. When the sheep dogs took a break the action switched to the woodchop events, a real test of speed and strength. I always hold my breath when the razor sharp axe swings so close to the axeman s feet but I m happy to say no blood was shed. The tractor pull draws a large crowd but only holds my attention for a few minutes. If these events didn t float your boat there was a barrel train and jumping castle for kids, the Maryborough Pipe band gave a stirring performance, there were foot races to watch and the Bealiba Pony Club were busy with a variety of events. The car, motor bike and engine enthusiasts in our family were kept entertained by a wide variety of very impressive historic vehicles and stationary engines. We left before the judging of the Miss Rheola competition but not before a delicious lunch in the hall where the Wedderburn Patchwork Group had a wonderful display of quilts. The Carnival, as always, was a great day out for all ages and judging by the large crowd I m sure lots of much needed funds were raised for the Inglewood and Dunolly hospitals and the Rheola Hall and Pioneer s Park. May the tradition continue long into the future. Faye Arnold

All the best to Phoebe and Sam for their future. Have you noticed that large tree outside the butcher shop? It's a bit hard to miss actually. It has the weirdest catkin-like "flowers" and must be one of the messiest trees in the world judging by the heaps of stuff it has shed on the ground and the butcher shop s roof too. I went out on Saturday evening to feed the birds up the paddock and noticed a large white horse talking over the fence up the back to the neighbor s ponies. Horse out on the road and it was getting dark not good! The shire ranger was out soon after she was contacted and the horse was gone! Ranger searched all the likely roads and could not find it, so as it was getting dark she went home. It was then I noticed the full moon. Full moon vanishing white horse from outside the old cemetery SPOOKY!! (PS- the horse turned up at Goldsborough next day) I reckon when Steve Smith and Cam Bancroft owned up, they may have looked to the other examples of punishments for cheating in sport fines or short suspensions. I don't think they expected the sky to fall down on them the way it did. There is another Rosemary in town I see. That makes six that I know of perhaps they could form a Rosemary club the way the Hazels have. I have a Mouli in the cupboard. They were used to reduce cooked fruit or vegies to a smooth pulp for making jams and sauces. I saw one advertised in a magazine as a potato ricer. The illustration was the same as the "vintage" one I have. 3 4th April 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 12 Page 3 LETTERS TO EDITOR Dear Editor There have been significant stories circulating about the Central Goldfields Shire s Go Goldfields handing out money to friends and relatives. In an attempt to find out the truth of this I went to the last council meeting. I asked if they could make public the Go Goldfield s payments to individuals, companies and organisations. The response was that this could breach the privacy of those in receipt of payments. Yet they tell us we have an open administration. For the last three years I ve been putting letters in this paper about secret payments by the shire and it is good to see some things have improved. But for this new administration to say we don t have to tell you who we give money to is a backward step. Two or three of the Go Goldfields members have left recently and the shire has introduced a conflict of interest clause to their meetings. At least some things are being tidied up. John Tully, Carisbrook Dear Editor A comment on a bus trip to Op shops from Dunolly. On our very recent trip by bus to the Op shops in Ballarat, all organised by Sharon from the Dunolly Neighbourhood House, it was very disappointing to find that five out of the seven participants who booked in for the trip, cancelled. One, at the very last minute as the bus was about to leave. Now this is very disappointing to say the least. It is understandable, that illness, incapacitation etc. happens to all of us at times. But five out of seven; I don t think so! And unless you were genuinely ill, the pre-payment should not have been returned to you. Fair is fair! So perhaps if you are just in two minds, don t book, because these trips cost money to run, and leave the organiser in a bit of a spin. But apart from that hiccup, a jolly good time was had by all. Lots of bargains and lots of laughs on the way home. I enjoyed myself immensely. Maz Bank of mum and dad closed for many Young people hoping to rely on the bank of mum and dad to help them break into the property market may be in for a shock with new research revealing that only 60 per cent of Australians surveyed think parents should help their adult children with a deposit for a home. Researchers from ECU s School of Arts and Humanities surveyed 300 Australians about their attitudes towards giving adult children money. They found that six in ten agreed that parents should be willing to provide just $1500 for a house deposit. Different needs Researchers presented the study participants with hypothetical scenarios where an adult child was asking his parents for $1500 for either a holiday, deposit for a house or for a medical procedure. More than 80 per cent of those surveyed agreed that parents should give money for a medical procedure, compared with 60 per cent for a house deposit and just 15 per cent for a holiday. Lead researcher Dr Deirdre Drake said the results showed that the nature of the child s need was the key factor influencing whether it was appropriate to give money. Requests for money for medical treatments or a house deposit were seen as more legitimate or necessary than giving money for a holiday which was seen as more of a luxury or indulgence, she said. The age of the child in the hypothetical situation was also an important factor influencing whether money should be given. Participants were more likely to endorse parents giving their child money if he was in his 20s than a child in his 30s. Interestingly, we found that participants were as likely to support parents giving money to a child in his 40s as they were a child in his 20s, she said. We suspect that this is because people perceived that someone who still needed support in their 40s must be particularly needy or troubled. Demographic differences The researchers also found that women were slightly less likely than men to agree that money should be given to a child. However, other demographic factors such as socioeconomic status and country of birth did not influence people s views about parents supporting their adult children financially. Competing themes Dr Deirdre Drake said when the participants were asked why they agreed or disagreed with giving money, two competing themes emerged. Those who agreed with giving money to adult children commonly cited the idea that parents should always help their children whilst those who disagreed with giving money referred commonly to the idea that adults need to be responsible for themselves, she said. Policy implications Dr Drake said the research had implications for the development of social policy in Australia. As the period of transition from childhood to adulthood has become longer, there has been a trend across many industrialised countries towards governments attempting to reduce social welfare and transfer more financial responsibility onto family members, Dr Drake said. As house prices in Australia have skyrocketed, pricing many young people out of the market, some politicians have suggested the solution is for parents to assist their children to buy a house. Our results suggest that governments need to be cautious about assuming that parents will support their adult children financially; many parents are willing to do so, but not for everything and not in all situations, such as the 40 per cent of Australians that did not agree that parents should help their adult children pay for a house deposit. Dr Justine Dandy and David Preece also contributed to the research. Should Parents Financially Support their Adult Children? Normative Views in Australia was recently published in the Journal of Family and Economic Issues. Media contact: David Gear (08) d.gear@ecu.edu.au

5 4th April 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 12 Page 5 Tailings Extracts from the Newsletter of Goldfields Historical & Arts Society Inc. SHIRE MONEY STOLEN Frank Pickersgill Cheetham was born in Tarnagulla in 1871 to James & Mary Cheetham. James was both secretary of the Shire of Bet Bet and a councillor for the Borough of Tarnagulla. He was the Mayor of Tarnagulla for four years. James also entered the Victorian parliament and was the MLA for the Dunolly Electorate. This meant he was holding three positions at the same time. James died in 1890 from injuries received in a buggy accident. Frank gained employment as valuer to the Shire of Bet Bet and assistant to the secretary. Then when he turned twenty-one took over his father s former position as secretary. He was also the rate collector. Earlier there had been a slight blemish to his name when secretary of the Tappit Hen Mining Co in Tarnagulla. The company owed money leading to creditors stepping in and seizing the property. In retrospect this was an early warning that was ignored. One of Frank s first decisions as secretary of the shire was to introduce carp into the reservoirs. He married Louisa Hodges from Laanecoorie in 1897 and the following year they had twin boys. The family lived in Dunolly in the house behind the shop at 107 Broadway. In May 1899 the Shire of Bet Bet received notice that money from the Public Works Department had been misappropriated. This was backed up by Inspector Martin and Mr Drake an auditor. The council decided to hold a special meeting to discuss the resignation of Frank Cheetham the secretary. Some councillors refused to hand over the books to the Government auditor, instead they suggested an internal audit should be sufficient. However councillors Joseph Freemantle and Thomas Fotheringham moved that their books be given to the Government auditor and their motion was carried. Frank went for a trip to Melbourne and was seen at a suburban racecourse in early July. Soon after, it is assumed, he took a passage to Western Australia. The police issued a warrant for his arrest on two charges of embezzlement totalling only 14/10/-. This small amount gave the public a false impression of his crimes as the amount missing was so much more. The police also obtained a photograph of Frank Cheetham which they sent to all the Victorian police stations in a restricted part of the Police Gazette. For some unknown reason they never released the photo to the public. It took two months for the Government auditor, Mr Morley, to release his report. He found that embezzlement had been going on for five years and that old receipt books had been used. Much of this was issuing false receipts when collecting the rates. The amount taken was proved to be 381/16/8. This equates to about three years wages. The auditor suspected there was more missing but did not yet have proof. Another two months passed before the shire offered a 20 reward for his arrest. This was a small reward and was never collected. From Victorian Police Gazette Cheetham must have known the Public Works Department were investigating so prior to their initial report he increased his activities. Farmers in the shire who took part in the wire netting loan program made their repayments through the shire. It was not until September that it was discovered there was 77 missing in payments. Cheetham also opened a second account in the shire s name at the Bank of Victoria in Dunolly. He used this to deposit cheques and withdraw cash. This should have aroused suspicion but the bank did nothing. The rate notices for the current year had not yet been issued but there were plenty of people paying their rate arrears. Victoria had just come out of a depression and the farmers had been paid. A number came into the shire to pay four years of back rates. Even though the notices hadn t been issued, Cheetham offered them the opportunity to pay their current rate at the same time. Many took up this offer. It seems that the power had gone to his head and he had no regard for anyone else. Some of the amounts stolen were as low as only one shilling from an elderly widow. The final tally for rates missing was 515/5/3. It was also found that the title deeds to Mrs Montaque s land were in the secretary s office. They were returned. George McNaboe was a Dunolly friend of Cheetham who had gone to Kalgoorlie. One story that circulated was that Cheetham had left for Kalgoorlie under a false name but was drowned on the way. This was not true. Louisa Cheetham left Dunolly in shame and shifted to Melbourne with her two sons. For five years she would receive occasional letters and money from her husband but then it stopped. In 1909 she applied for a divorce. From information in the letters her solicitor managed to track him down. He was living under a false name in Queensland. Since leaving Dunolly he appears to have spent most of his time in Queensland. He had purchased a lot of rubies and other precious stones from miners and had a good stash. In 1909 he was working as a bookkeeper and storeman at Mt Marlow station near Longreach and also was the postmaster. The divorce was granted but Frank Cheetham was never brought back to Victoria to face embezzlement charges. His last known statement was that if the mine he invested in paid off he meant to clear out of Australia. He was never tracked down. Had he gone to trial there might have been the chance to find out if any of the councillors, staff or auditors were complicit with the embezzlement. After all, it had been going on for five years. Also which ones helped cover up and which ones, if any, knew but chose not to do anything. John Tully

Kate Bucknall THE OLD STONE CHIMNEY The old stone chimney stands alone ghostlike in the rising moon it casts long shadows with its stone in the heated hush of noon. It brings back memories of other days and I wish if only I could turn back the years and bitter tears now only the chimney stood. I stood beside where a picket fence ran down to Verdon Street and I thought of a love long gone my tired heart missed a beat. For time has come with its awful change the grass has overgrown the little garden now withered plants like the old home now has flown. Now horses graze on the empty plot but peppercorn trees still grow and new faces tramp the dusty paths I guess they never know. There s only some rubble, broken glass and I wish if only I could turn back the years the bitter tears where the old stone chimney stood. finis Ken Peake

8 Page 8 Volume 33 Issue 12 THE WELCOME RECORD 4th April 2018 Summer s Over, Fire Restrictions Are Not Although summer officially ended on Wednesday 28th February, the Fire Danger Period didn t! Residents are reminded that fire restrictions remain in force within the Central Goldfields, City of Greater Bendigo, Macedon Ranges and Mt Alexander Shires due to ongoing very dry conditions. A date to lift restrictions will not be determined until after Easter but will be widely publicised by CFA. With restrictions already being lifted in some adjoining municipalities in the north of the state, agreement has been reached by the shires to consider issuing Schedule 13 Permits as of Tuesday 3 rd April What are Schedule 13 permits? These may be issued to burn fine fuel (such as grass, stubble, weeds), and only where there is an essential need to burn during the Fire Danger Period. For example: farming - broad acre cropping. Depending on your location, the assessment of applications and issuing of Schedule 13 permits may be done by a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer or CFA. Submit your form according to Council or CFA instruction. With the nights getting cooler there is concern that fires are being lit and some of these have resulted in CFA and Victoria Police attending. There is a Zero Tolerance policy for any unlawful fire during the Fire Danger Period meaning that offenders will find themselves facing court and potentially large fines and/or imprisonment. CFA District 02 Operations Manager Trent McKinnon said We are still in the Fire Danger Period, which means that fire restrictions remain in place. If you intend to burn off or have an outdoor fire at this time of year then you must comply with certain restrictions or obtain a permit. The only exception was for the burning of stubble by broad acre farmers and camp fires were allowed providing they meet very strict regulations. Mr McKinnon commented You may begin to see smoke from stubble burning as of next week but that would not mean restrictions have been lifted. Over the last fortnight we have seen communities across the state seriously impacted by fire and conditions in our municipality remain very dry and the risk of fire remains very high. It s important to understand fire restrictions, particularly if you re planning to light a campfire and it s also just as important to be aware that campfires are banned on Total Fire Ban Days. During the Fire Danger Period you can only have a campfire if: The wind is less than 10km/h (if leaves and small twigs are in constant motion then this is considered to be more than 10km per hour) There is a three metre area clear of flammable material around and above the fire. The fire is smaller than one square metre A person is in attendance at all times and has the capacity and means to extinguish the fire It is completely extinguished before the person leaves. Mr McKinnon commented that Fire restrictions limit the ways you can use fire on your property, including machinery which may produce sparks or flames. Any fire can quickly threaten lives and property given the right conditions. CFA North West Region Community Education Coordinator Paul Tangey emphasised the fact that Until the date has been set to cease the Fire Danger Period, burning-off is not allowed and municipalities will not accept any local law permit to burn applications. Mr Tangey commented that Fire restrictions remain in force for a very good reason and that is to try and prevent fires from starting unnecessarily! It s up to you to stay informed by checking the Fire Danger Rating for your area daily and to act to protect yourself and your family by leaving early on hot, dry, windy days. Don t wait and see. He also made the point that It s everyone s responsibility to prevent fires from starting and spreading. Two recommended sources of information are vital to explaining which part of Victoria you are in and the regulations around what activities are permitted during the Fire Danger Period the Total Fire Ban Districts map and the Can I Can t I brochure. These publications and further details are available from: Your local CFA brigade; Emergency Management Victoria website at - CFA website Vic Emergency Hotline Vic Emergency App - Social Media including Facebook and Twitter Paul Tangey How much did Dunolly Donate over Easter? This year the Dunolly Fire Brigade (with the help of our Community) raised $7, for the Royal Children's Hospital. A big thank you to all who helped on the day. A great effort for a small town. Dunolly CFA Eddington Photographer among world s best. Eddington based photographer, Bec Gallagher, has been internationally recognised for her work in newborn and family photography. Placing in the top 10 for newborn and the top 20 for family photography in The Portrait Masters Awards. It is really nice to be recognised within the industry and in the field, Bec said.. I was really shocked and thoroughly pleased with the results, to get in to the top 20 out of more than 6000 entries is pretty incredible. 9 4th April 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 12 Page 9 We are getting really close to our Recycle Runway Event on Friday April 20th at 6.30pm and have had two workshops in preparation. Last weekend saw us hosting Bianca Flint of The Wardrobe Green in a sustainable clothing workshop. We used clothing we already had or donated to the Hub to work on and with the addition of iron on embellishments, fabric, braid, ribbon and cutting techniques. We made them much more modern and useable. This is what sustainable clothing is all about. Instead of rushing out to buy new, consider borrowing from friends or a clothes swap, try remodelling outfits. I can hear you saying But I don t sew. Well there are dressmakers out there who would love to help you for a fraction of the cost of a new outfit. Bianca gave us all some great ideas, and the internet is full of fabulous ideas on sites like Pinterest. There are many ways we can make a difference and stop sending clothes to landfill. We have one more workshop before the Runway Show & Exhibition, and that is with Lauren Murray who will take a simple shirt and make it a wearable fashionable piece of clothing. More details closer to the weekend and details below. April 14 Arts Hub at 1.30pm Straight from Melbourne, this up-cycling fashionista will show us her techniques for turning a man s shirt into a fashion garment, and share her secrets of recycling/upcycling clothes. Come and pick up some tricks. Free Workshop. Mystery Bag Challenge If you want to be involved in the Mystery Bag Challenge you still have time to come and get your bag from the Arts Hub or at the Neighbourhood Centre for the entrance price of $5. The bag contains six randomly chosen items of clothing, you can make one outfit out of the six items or use small pieces of the fabrics to embellish just one piece, add to the clothing in the bag, just as long as it is second-hand. You can decorate a hand-bag or shoes to go with the outfit. There aren t very many rules as we would like you to join in. Before the event on the evening of Friday 20th April, I will get in touch with you to talk to you about what time to come to the hub and what you will need to do on the night. If you don t have a model for the event you can always take the mystery bag challenge and put your outfit on a mannequin or dressmaker s dummy for the exhibition. Runway Show The best advantage apart from being involved in a fun community event is that anybody that goes in the Mystery Bag Challenge or puts a recycled artwork in the Exhibition gets to come to the Runway Show for the discounted cost of $10 and if you are a model in the parade you get in for free. We will be having supper, wine and champagne and nonalcoholic fruit cocktails. These are complimentary. There will be a door prize and all entrants get a Participation Certificate. 10 Page 10 Volume 33 Issue 12 THE WELCOME RECORD 4th April 2018 Autumn is with us again and we look for some cooler weather, also some good rains, hopefully. Old plants that occupy space in the garden are better taken out, to make way for the next planting season. These plants not only use up soil nutrients, they also harbor pests and diseases. Vacant space that will be left idle to Springtime, can be sown with a green manure crop. Oat crops can be turned into the soil when 30 cm high. Clover can be left until it starts to flower, if the space is not needed before planting time. Both these varieties are rich in nitrogen. By sowing green manure crops over the Winter months, it saves weeding and turning the soil over to keep it from water logging if it rains. Seeds to sow this month are silver beet, radish, beetroot, lettuce, white onions, spring and salad onions, English spinach, Japanese turnip, broad beans and Asian cabbages. Good fresh seedlings of broccoli and cauliflower can still be planted out. These plants are very adaptable to season conditions; they will make good heads, well into springtime. Seedlings of salad, spring onions and late leeks can go in. Plant garlic cloves in Autumn, for harvesting in late Spring -Summer. Garlic requires well drained, enriched (wellrotted animal manure/compost) soil in full sun. Additional lime is also beneficial in soils with a neutral to low ph. Plant pointy end up, cover the cloves with soil, sprinkle some blood and bone or other slow-release organic fertiliser over the top and water well. Don't water again until the cloves have sprouted, then apply some mulch. For harvested potatoes, store in a jute bag and keep in a dark cool place, if exposed to sun and wind they soon go green and useless. Fruit Trees Fruit trees are now holding a heavy crop of fruit, it is best to support the limbs with props. If limbs get badly bent down they will not go back up once the fruit is off them. If you are planning to plant new fruit trees Autumn is the best time to prepare the ground for planting and order your trees. Some varieties need at least two trees so they can cross-pollinate, and it's wise to discuss which varieties best suit your local climate and soil, and which make good pollen partners before purchase. Feed citrus trees with poultry manure, if they are flowering wait until the fruit is formed. Also dilute one tablespoon of iron-sulphate in four and half litres of water and water around each tree. Autumn Tips Camellias will love a feed at the beginning of autumn with Dynamic Lifter or any organic fertiliser that improves the soil with valuable organic matter. Use a liquid fertiliser with potassium to help promote healthy green leaf growth and lots of flowers. Feed roses, both in-ground and potted, regularly with a potassium rich liquid fertiliser. To promote flowering as well as encouraging healthy plants, trim off spent flowers regularly to keep the rose looking tidy and encourage more flowers to develop. Top up or apply mulch around the base of rose plants. Lucerne or pea straw is ideal. Plant some bright little petal faces of pansies, one of the delights of the cooler months. Whether you have a bare spot in a sunny or partly shaded garden bed or want to brighten a courtyard or balcony with some flower packed pots, pansies provide a splash of happy colour. Whatever your favourite spring flowering bulb is, it's time to start planning! A little preparation now will result in much healthier bulbs and a gorgeous floral show. In a sunny location out in the garden, enrich the soil in the planting area with some compost and slow release fertiliser. Organic matter that will help improve the structure of the soil, encourage earthworms and beneficial micro-organisms and provide the newly planted bulbs with nutrients to promote good early bulb growth. How to sow and grow sweet peas Sweet peas are traditionally climbers which will grow up anything they can get their tendrils around. Grow them up a trellis, tee pee, arbour or arch, or netting to create a temporary screen. Choose a position in full sun where you can Improve soil with compost and an application of lime to increase ph. Sow seed directly in Autumn and protect from snail and slugs. 14 Page 14 Volume 33 Issue 12 THE WELCOME RECORD BEALIBA Bealiba Bowls Members welcomed another new member this week, Kelvin Gear. Garry Coburn also returned. Joe Battisson, Gordon Smith and Tiger Coburn were the best team this week with three wins. At this early stage in the year Joe Battisson is ahead on points. There is fierce competition between husbands and wives as we now have five couples as members. Pam Brightwell Travels without Cynthia This issue of The Welcome Record is, sadly, Cynthialess. However, wonderful travel stories can still be told. For instance, when driving through town over the Easter weekend, it was noticed that there were many people parked in Broadway. Some for rest stops; many were for lunch and dinner at our variety of cafes, the hotel and restaurant. Some drive through without taking time to explore what is on in the town. It was pleasing to hear that many people stopped their journeys to view the wonderful exhibition in the Court House. Anna and Phil have worked hard to bring Deborah Halpern to Dunolly. Her mosaics are magnificent and well worth the walk into the next street over (north) to see them. More information on the last page. 4th April 2018

17 4th April 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 12 Page 17 The five-yearly Census provides critical data and information to support important Australian decisions by governments, community organisations, businesses and individuals. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is reviewing the information collected in the 2021 Census of Population and Housing to ensure it best meets our nation s needs and informs Australia s important decisions. A public consultation, launched today through the ABS website, seeks input from data users, community groups and organisations on their data needs and the most useful information to collect in the 2021 Census. Population and Social Statistics General Manager Dr Paul Jelfs said, It s important that our nation s largest statistical collection remains relevant and meets users needs. Submissions can be easily made via the ABS consultation hub, Dr Jelfs said. The ABS will assess any changes suggested through the submission process based on evidence and demonstrated need. We will seek to minimise the burden on the community by managing the number and complexity of questions asked in the Census. It s wonderful to see quality 2016 Census data being used widely and this consultation process is about ensuring our 2021 Census data is even more valuable and useful, Dr Jelfs said. The Census adds to the wealth of knowledge from other ABS data collections, Dr Jelfs said The ABS has been undertaking a comprehensive review of the operation of the 2016 Census and has identified areas of improvement for As we work towards 2021, the ABS will share our approach to how people can participate in the Census, our approach to ensuring privacy and security of information and how we provide the final Census results. Submissions on 2021 Census topics close on 30 June. Following analysis, the ABS will publish preliminary findings from this consultation process then make recommendations to the Australian Government. Details on how to participate, including instructions for making your submission and frequently asked questions are available online at The Census of Population and Housing: Consultation on Content 2021 publication provides detailed information on the topics. 19 4th April 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 12 Page 19 Reel Ends for movie Club that filled a gap The Casablanca Movie Club is bidding its final farewell. The club, which has run for the past 11 years, will no longer be screening movies in Maryborough. The club was founded by Allen May and Jan Tribe, who are currently president and secretary of the club, respectively. The pair said they originally decided to create a movie club as a fundraiser for the Goldfields FM radio station. The reason we started it was basically for an ongoing fund raising activity to support our local community station. Mr May said. After the success of the fundraiser, the club continued to regularly screen movies using the Paramount Theatre for a number of years before relocating to the Community Hub. I encourage our members from Maryborough to attend and support the Paramount Theatre, they ve done a fantastic job with renovating it, and we d like to wish the owners well. Mr May said. Despite no longer running in Maryborough, the club will live on in Avoca, where it will now have regular screens at the town hall. 20 Page 20 Volume 33 Issue 12 THE WELCOME RECORD 4th April 2018 Renowned Sculptor in Dunolly The Deborah Halpern at the Courthouse exhibition opened over Easter, with more than one hundred visitors over the three days. This special exhibition will run until the end of April, opening every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm or by appointment. We do not have enough volunteers to be open every day, but we are not far away so please call Phil on This amazing exhibition has over 90 pieces of work ranging from the iconic sculpture Continuum, that stands outside the courthouse - to the smaller mosaic and ceramic sculptures and panels inside. The slumped and blown glass work has drawn a lot of attention and we have already sold two pieces of her art to collectors. The works on paper in ink, print and paint, plus painted linen, show the playfulness and whimsy that runs through all of Deborah s work. This show will run through till the end of April and be a centre piece of the Tiny Towns Arts Trail, along with Richard Tatti s Nightscape Photography. Deborah will be back in Dunolly in early May to begin work with the community on developing ideas and design for a large sculpture that will reflect the stories and Sense of Place of our community. These creative conversations will be interpreted by Deborah into a large sculpture design. Deborah will then work alongside local artists and community to organise and execute the final project. Everyone will have an opportunity to participate, from the ideas development through to the construction, decoration and celebration of the final piece. So come along and visit the exhibition. Watch this space for dates, times and locations in early May for the community gatherings to meet with Deborah and get involved.
