3 Course Overview Description Conservation Praxis is an intensive four week summer course designed for students pursuing studies in architectural conservation and site management and builds on the core curriculum and the first year conservation and site management courses. The syllabus is organized around group fieldwork supplemented by lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and site visits that will allow students to experience firsthand the design and construction of vernacular buildings and the application of traditional craft to preserve them. Program For Summer 2016, the course will be based at Hadden Ranch, Mancos, CO. Fieldwork will be conducted at Bar BC Dude Ranch in Grand Teton National Park, WY, and Mesa Verde National Park, CO. Additional sites maybe included for diversity of experiences. The first two weeks will be dedicated to traditional craft exercices in masonry, adobe, and carpentry. For the second two weeks, the course will focus on fieldwork at either Bar BC Dude Ranch in Wyoming or Mesa Verde, Colorado. Shared accommodation will be provided. Weekday meals will be a communal event and prepared by a cook. Generally, weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are on your own. Students are requested to bring laptops, cameras, comfortable working clothes, sleeping bags, and all personal items (toiletries, etc.). Evenings and mornings can be chilly, make sure to bring warm sleeping clothes. 2
