1 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Picture BIO Account Wall Location Deputy Marshal Thomas A. Welch 35 End of Watch: Omaha Deputy Marshal Thomas A. Welch was shot on Sunday, June 24, 1866, and died Wednesday, August 8, Welch encountered a soldier with the Nebraska 1st Regiment in a beer garden. The soldier was causing Panel: 3 a disturbance and when Welch began escorting him Line: 2 outside, the soldier pulled a revolver and shot him. The soldier was taken into custody but later escaped. Deputy Marshal Welch was 35 years old and survived by his wife, Ann. Constable Jeremiah McCheane 51 End of Watch: Cause of Death Stabbed 7 Constable Jeremiah McCheane was stabbed by a subject he had just arrested on a warrant from the court. The attack occurred at about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 1870, at a tenement house located at 13th and Panel: 4 Webster. McCheane remained unconscious until he Line: 2 died at 8:40 a.m. the next morning. Constable McCheane was 51 years old and survived by his wife, Mary, and seven children. Deputy Sheriff Charles Mayes County: Dawson County Agency: Dawson County 36 End of Watch: Deputy Sheriff Charles Mayes was shot and killed at about 12:05 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 1876, about 5 miles south of current day Lexington. Mayes was attempting to serve a writ of ejectment on a farmer at that location when the subject shot him once. The two men who accompanied Mayes subdued his killer and took him to jail. That night a crowd of masked men forced their way into the jail and took the doomed man to the courthouse. The killer was hung from the second floor railing. Deputy Mayes was 36 years old at the time of his death. Panel: 11 Line: 1 Sheriff Bernard "Barney" F. Kearns County: Holt County Agency: Holt County 30 End of Watch: Deputy Sheriff Reuben Kelley County: Kearney County Agency: Kearney County 41 End of Watch: Sheriff Bernard "Barney" F. Kearns was shot on Monday, March 28, 1881, and died about 30 minutes later. A group of cowboys were creating a disturbance in O'Neill and Kearns disarmed one man named Stuart. Later, Stuart talked another man named Reed into helping him confront Sheriff Kearns. The two did so and Reed shot Sheriff Kearns. Deputy Sheriff James Connolly was wounded as he was coming to the aid of his fellow lawman. Reed was later arrested but acquitted at the murder trial. Sheriff Kearns was 30 years old at the time of his death. Panel: 10 Line: 1 Deputy Sheriff Reuben Kelley was shot and killed along with Hitchcock County Sheriff Jack Woods on Monday, October 16, 1882, while attempting to arrest horse thieves. Deputy Kelley was in the Prairie Home Hotel eating his late meal when Sheriff Woods entered Panel: 7 to arrest the two men. After Sheriff Woods was shot by Line: 1 one of the men, Deputy Kelley grabbed the suspect and pushed him into the wall. The other man stepped up behind Kelley and shot him in the back of the head. Kelley died instantly. Deputy Kelley was 41 years old and survived by his wife.

Phillips County: Cedar County Agency: Cedar County 57 End of Watch: Sheriff Jack Woods was shot and killed at about 6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 16, 1882, while in Minden attempting to arrest two horse thieves. Sheriff Woods, along with Kearney County Sheriff Ericson, went to the Prairie Home Hotel after learning that the two suspected thieves were taking their late meal there. Woods entered the front door of the hotel after having watched the men enter earlier, and drew his revolver. He ordered the two men to surrender. Waiting for Ericson to come through the back door, Woods was surprised when one of the men drew a pistol and shot him twice and died instantly. The two assailants fled town but not before killing two more men, one of them being R. B. Kelley, the former sheriff and special deputy for Sheriff Ericson. His wife, Laura, survived Sheriff Woods. Panel: 9 Line: 1 Deputy Sheriff John W. Phillips died from a gunshot wound that he received on Friday, October 24, 1884, near West Bow, Nebraska. Deputy Phillips was trailing a suspect wanted in connection with setting fire to hay stacks. Deputy Phillips and a posse located the suspect in a home, and he agreed to surrender, but only to Deputy Phillips. When Phillips entered the house the Panel: 2 suspect fired three shots. Two of them missed Phillips. Line: 1 However, the third fatally struck him in the lower part of his body. The suspect was later captured and taken to St. Helena. He was lynched nearby on Saturday, October 25, Deputy Phillips was 57 years old and survived by his wife. Sheriff John S. Degman County: Colfax County Agency: Colfax County SO 35 End of Watch: Cause of Death Assault Single Sheriff John S. Degman died on Tuesday, January 12, 1886, at about 9:15 a.m. after being beaten with a piece of firewood by a prisoner in the jail. Degman had gone into the cell at about 8:00 a.m. to attend to the prisoner Panel: 12 and was attacked. The prisoner escaped briefly but was Line: 1 captured by the former Sheriff. Later that night, a group of men came to the jail, took the killer outside to a tree and hung him. Sheriff Degman had been sworn in on January 2, He was 35 years old and single. Constable William H. Smith County: Kearney County Agency: Minden 24 End of Watch: Single Constable William H. Smith was shot and killed in the afternoon on Monday, November 8, 1886, north of Minden. Constable Smith had a court order to execute on property owned by John Shafer. Constable Smith and Shafer exchanged words when Smith attempted to levy by taking a cow as part of the court execution. Shafer became upset and shot Smith with a shotgun. Sheriff Hill and a posse later captured Shafer. Constable Smith was 24 years old and single. He was elected Constable in Panel: 8 Line: 1 Clarence J. Balcom County: Adams County Agency: Hastings 39 End of Watch: Hastings Clarence J. Balcom died from a gunshot wound at about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, A 15-year-old male shot Balcom at about 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, August 5, 1888, near the Panel: 1 Burlington yard. He had been alerted to watch for the Line: 1 youth who was suspected of a jewelry theft. Balcom was 39 years of age at the time of his death and was survived by his wife, Mariam.

Originally Buried at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in the south central area of Grant Township in the southwest part of Custer County,but later disinterred and reburied in cemetery at city of Gothenburg, Nebraska. Panel: 17 Line: 6 William M. Ashley County: Agency: End of Watch: Cause of Death Shot and killed by Albert E. Haunseine in 1889, who hung at courthouse in Broken Bow, Nebraska for his crime. Paxton County: Greeley County Agency: Greeley County 41 End of Watch: UP Agent William E. Ransom County: Agency: Union Pacific End of Watch: Cause of Death Assault 3 Greeley County Constable James P. Paxton died on Friday, April 10, 1891, near Pinnacle Springs, Arkansas, while attempting to arrest a former Nebraska man on a warrant. Greeley County authorities had received information that a a 39-year-old man wanted in connection with selling mortgaged property was in hiding in Arkansas. With a governor's warrent in hand, Paxton traveled to Arkansas, was told of the suspect's hideout in the woods, and led a group of Arkansas deputies to arrest him. As Paxton waited for the deputies to get into position, the suspect suddenly Panel: 5 emerged from his cabin, shotgun in hand, apparently Line: 1 planning to do some hunting. As the man walked down the laneway, unknowingly approaching the hidden lawman, Paxton stepped out from his position and commanded the man to surrender. He responded by slowly lowering the shotgun's barrel to his side, but quickly raised it again and fired as Paxton began to approach. The charge struck Paxton in the face, killing him instantly. The suspect was later shot by Arkansas deputies and jailed. Constable Paxton was 41 years old and survived by his wife and four children. Special Agent William Ransom, 37, succumbed to a head injury sustained on December 22nd, 1893, while attempting to arrest a subject in Wahoo, Nebraska. Agent Ransom had been sent to the area to investigate a rash of recent burglaries. At approximately 10:00 pm he observed a man getting out of a freight car in the rail yards and attempting to arrest him. During the ensuing Panel: TBA struggle Agent Ransom was knocked to the ground and Line: TBA struck his head on a railroad tie. He was taken St. Joseph's Hospital, in Omaha, where his condition continued to worsen until he died of his injuries. Agent Ransom had served with the Union Pacific Railroad Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife, three children, and parents.

4 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Tribal John Red Horse County: Sheridan County Agency: Department of Interior End of Watch: Cause of Death Assault Marshal Nicholas Craig County: Pawnee County Agency: Table Rock Marshal 39 End of Watch: Department of the Interior and Pine Ridge Tribal John Red Horse was killed on Thursday, November 15, 1894, in Rushville, Nebraska, while attempting to intervene in a disturbance between two men. Red Horse had gone into one of the lodges at the camping ground when he heard the disturbance. He found two men fighting and stepped between them. One of the men suddenly picked up a piece of wood and struck Red Horse. He fell to the ground and the man dropped the piece of wood. The other man then picked it back up and beat Red Horse to death. Both men were later captured and tried for the murder of Red Horse. Panel: 6 Line: 1 Table Rock Marshal Nicholas Craig was shot at about 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 1896, at the railroad depot. Marshal Craig had received word that he should be on the lookout for men involved in a burglary in Falls City. He went to the depot to watch for the men and checked the train that had recently arrived from Falls City. Craig observed as a strange Panel: 8 man enter the lunchroom and decided to watch him. Line: 7 The man asked to trade a revolver for some lunches for himself and his two partners. Marshal Craig approached the man and asked him to withdraw his hands from his pockets. The man drew out two revolvers, shot Craig in the head, then turned and fled. Marshal Craig died about half hour later. He was 39 years old and was survived by his wife, Agnes. Daniel D. Tiedeman 38 End of Watch: Omaha Daniel D. Tiedeman was shot and mortally wounded at about 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, Tiedeman, who was investigating a report of a burglary at a saloon near 13th and Spaulding, surprised the burglars and gave chase when they ran from the scene. He walked into a nearby fire Panel: 7 station and collapsed. It was discovered that Tiedeman Line: 3 had been shot in the stomach with a shotgun. Tiedeman was taken to Clarkson Hospital but died at about 1:00 p.m. that same day. He was 38 years old and survived by his wife and daughter. Benjamin F. Stump County: Richardson County Agency: Falls City 22 End of Watch: Single Falls City Benjamin F. Stump died at about 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 1899, from a single gunshot wound received at about 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, Stump had gone to the Missouri Pacific Depot, as was his custom, to meet the train when it arrived. While waiting for the train, Stump began to check box cars and picked up two tramps. He began escorting them from the yard. Stump stopped again and discovered someone in car #5763. He shined his lantern into the car and called for the person to come forward. Without warning a shot rang out. Stump was struck in the forehead and fell to the ground. He was able to make it to the depot where help was summoned. It was later learned that Stump was struck with a.32 caliber round. He survived for nearly a month before dying. Stump was 22 years old and single. Panel: 16 Line: 6

5 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Marshal Alphonso J. Wake County: Richardson County Agency: Rulo City 55 End of Watch: Rulo City Marshal Alphonso J. Wake was shot and killed at about 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 1900, by a subject he had escorted from a bar in town. Marshal Wake had gone to Kanaly's Saloon and encountered several men causing a disturbance. When Marshal Wake instructed the men to calm down, one of Panel: 18 them refused and threatened the lawman. Marshal Line: 4 Wake escorted the man outside and was talking to him when the man suddenly pulled a hidden gun and fired. Wake collapsed and died. The suspect escaped but later returned and was captured. Marshal Wake was 55 years old and survived by his wife and seven children. Halladay B. Pratt County: Otoe County Agency: Nebraska City 52 End of Watch: Cause of Death Brick 5 Special Agent Thomas Gentleman Agency: Union Pacific 49 End of Watch: Single Marshal Arthur A. Moss County: Dawes County Agency: Crawford Marshal 31 End of Watch: Single died on February 10, 1902, from injuries suffered while attempting to disburse a group of males that had gathered and were destroying some property. While ordering the mob to leave Pratt was struck in the head with a brick thrown by a young male in the group. Pratt was knocked unconscious and carried from the scene by a group of bystanders. He was later taken to his home located near Seventh Street and Fourth Avenue where his condition deteriorated. It was believed that he had suffered a brain hemorrhage due to the blow that ultimately resulted in his death. Pratt was 52 years old and was survived by his wife, Lydie, three sons and two daughters. Panel: 4 Line: 1 was shot on January 7, 1904, at approximately 9:00 PM in the Omaha Freight Yard at Fourteenth Street near the Chicago Lumber Company s property. A man was observed attempting to steal coal from a Union Pacific coal car. As Agent Gentleman approached the suspect to arrest him for theft, the thief pulled out a handgun Panel: 3 and fired at him. Gentleman was struck and was later Line: 1 taken to St. Joseph s Hospital where he died the following day from his gunshot wound. Gentleman had previously been employed by the Platte County Sheriff s Office as a deputy sheriff and as a policeman with the Columbus Police Department. He was 49 tears old and single at the time of his death. Crawford Marshal Arthur A. Moss died from a gunshot wound received at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, Marshal Moss was attempting to disperse a group of soldiers who were drinking beer and began to create a disturbance. When Moss stepped into the area Panel: 12 one of the soldiers drew his revolver and shot him. He Line: 7 died a short time later. The soldier fled but was later captured. He was found guilty and spent seven years in the state penitentiary for manslaughter. Marshal Moss was 31 years old and single. Special Agent Joseph M. Smith Agency: Burlington Northern 40 End of Watch: Cause of Death Train Accident Burlington Northern Special Agent Joseph M. Smith was struck and killed by runaway freight cars in the Union Pacific Yard at Sixth and Leavenworth in Omaha at about 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10, Panel: Smith was walking along the track and witnesses Line: 6 stated that he didn't hear the train coming. The string of freight cars broke loose and struck Smith, killing him instantly. Agent Smith was 40 years old when he was killed and was survived by his wife and children.

6 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Detective Simon S. Drummy 51 End of Watch: Marshal Charles A. Ralston County: Cass County Agency: Weeping Water 49 End of Watch: Lafayette A. Smith End of Watch: Omaha Detective Simon S. Drummy was shot and killed at about 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, The shooting took place at William Sawyer's Pool Room at 2607 "N" Street. Detective Drummy and Detective Shields had gone to South Omaha looking for a suspect involved in an armed robbery and shooting of Omaha Lahey. When the officers arrived they observed a male standing behind a stove. Panel: 13 As Drummy approached the man the suspect pulled a Line: 6 revolver from under his coat and shot Drummy once in the head. Drummy tried to draw his revolver but collapsed. Detective Shields shot and wounded the suspect. The man later died from his wounds. Detective Drummy was 51 years old and survived by his wife, Katherine, and five children. Weeping Water Marshal Charles A. Ralston died from a gunshot wound at about 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, Marshal Ralston had been watching several subjects who were believed to be jewelry thieves and who had checked into the local hotel. After Panel: 1 following them into the railroad yard it is believed that Line: 2 Ralston was shot by one of the men after being discovered. Marshal Ralston was 49 years old and survived by his wife, Nettie, and six children. Omaha Lafayette A. Smith was shot at about 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 14, 1909, while on foot patrol near 9th and Dodge. Smith heard a disturbance nearby and observed a struggle between a man and a woman. When Smith stepped in to arrest the man as he attempted to rob the woman, the suspect Panel: 6 drew a revolver and shot the officer twice in the abdomen. Smith returned fire wounding the suspect in Line: 5 the leg. Detective Devereese later observed the same suspect at about 2:15 a.m. and was involved in a shootout. The suspect was wounded and surrendered. Smith died at about 1:00 a.m. from his wounds. His wife and children survived him. Edward Lowery End of Watch: South Omaha Edward Lowery was shot and killed at about 10:45 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 1909, near 24th and "N" Street in South Omaha. Lowery had just arrested a man for vagrancy and, as he escorted the man down the street, the suspect suddenly produced a hidden revolver and shot the officer. Panel: 5 Drawing his revolver, Lowery returned fire Line: 2 striking the suspect twice before collapsing. Taken to a nearby drug store, Lowery died a few minutes later. South Omaha Harder captured the suspect a short time later. His wife and three children survived Lowery. Sheriff Cloud H. Fuller County: Pawnee County Agency: Pawneed County 53 End of Watch: Sheriff Cloud H. Fuller died from a gunshot wound at about 10:30 p.m. on Monday, May 29, Sheriff Fuller was attempting to arrest a man that was believed to have killed three members of the McVitty family south of Pawnee City. Sheriff Fuller obtained help from three local men and went in search of the murderer. About a mile into Kansas Sheriff Fuller and the other men found the suspect's trail and followed it to a small corncob shed near the Lepley School. As Fuller approached the suspect emerged and shot the lawman. The three men who had accompanied Fuller fled and returned with help, only to find that the suspect had shot himself. Sheriff Fuller was gravely wounded and was taken to a nearby house where he later died. Sheriff Fuller was 53 years old and survived by his wife, Lizzie, and several children. Panel: 15 Line: 4

7 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Edward D. Davis County: Lancaster County Agency: Department of Corrections 63 End of Watch: Cause of Death Stabbed Department of Corrections Deputy Warden Edward D. Davis died at about 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, 1912, after being stabbed six times during church Panel: 3 services at the prison. Convict Albert Prince stabbed Line: 7 Davis in retribution for being disciplined for violations of prison rules. Deputy Warden Davis was 63 years old and married at the time of his death. James Delahunty County: Lancaster County Agency: Department of Corrections 55 End of Watch: Department of Corrections Warden James Delahunty was shot twice and died from his wounds at about 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, He was shot during a deadly break at the prison in Lincoln. The three escapees managed to escape the prison grounds and flee Lincoln but were later cornered near Gretna. One Panel: 14 of the convicts committed suicide by a self-inflicted Line: 1 gunshot, and a member of the posse, who closed in on the escapees, shot another. The last convict surrendered. Warden Delahunty was 55 years old at the time of his death. E.G. Heilman County: Lancaster County Agency: Department of Corrections End of Watch: Department of Corrections E. G. Heilman died at about 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 1912, while attempting to thwart a prison escape. Heilman was one of three prison officers killed during the violent breakout. The three escapees managed to escape the Panel: 11 prison grounds and flee Lincoln, but were later Line: 2 cornered near Gretna. One of the convicts committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot, and a member of the posse, who closed in on the escapees, shot another. The last convict surrendered. Henry Wagner County: Lancaster County Agency: Department of Corrections End of Watch: Department of Corrections Deputy Warden Henry Wagner was shot to death in the Administration Building at about 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, Wagner was one of three correction officers killed during the violent breakout. The three escapees managed to escape the prison grounds and flee Lincoln but were later cornered near Gretna. One of the convicts committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot, and a member of the posse, who closed in on the escapees, shot another. The last convict surrendered. Panel: 12 Line: 3

Sanderson County: Clay County Agency: Clay County 36 End of Watch: Detective Thomas Ring 54 End of Watch: William Good 47 End of Watch: Sheriff Charles O. Sanderson was shot and killed at about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 1914, about 4 miles north of Harvard. Sheriff Sanderson was investigating the murder of a local businessman and was informed that a suspicious stranger was walking north of Harvard. Sheriff Sanderson, accompanied by D. T. Phillips, located the suspect walking alongside the road. Sanderson called for the man to stop and, when the order was ignored, the Sheriff fired warning shots. The suspect turned and fired, striking Sheriff Sanderson with his first shot. The suspect fled and later committed suicide when cornered by a posse. Sheriff Sanderson was 36 years old and survived by his wife, Katherine, and two children. Omaha Detective Thomas Ring was killed about noon on Wednesday, February 10, Ring had been asked by Union Pacific Special Cashman to assist with arresting two men wanted in connection with robbing boxcars of merchandise. Ring met with Cashman and Special Phillips of Burlington Northern and went to a rooming house located at 401 North 15th Street, where the two men were to have been. Upon arriving, the officers went upstairs and announced themselves. A warning came for the officers to stay away from the door. As Ring stood on a washstand and looked through a transom in an attempt to see what the suspects were doing, he was shot once with a.44 caliber revolver and died instantly. Two suspects fled but one was captured a short distance away. The other suspect committed suicide to avoid capture. Detective Ring was 54 years old and survived by his wife and three children. Omaha William Good was shot while investigating a domestic abuse call on Friday, March 31, Upon arrival at the scene, Good arrested the husband and escorted him to the corner drug store to call for a police wagon. However, the suspect had concealed a revolver before Good arrived and suddenly pulled it out. The men struggled and Good was shot once in the face. He died instantly. The suspect returned home, where he killed his wife and then himself. Good was 47 years old and was survived by his wife and two children. Panel: 1 Line: 3 Panel: 6 Line: 3 Panel: 7 Line: 4 Special Agent Cornelius Cross Agency: NW Railroad 23 End of Watch: Northwestern Railroad Special Agent Cornelius Cross was shot and killed on Sunday, January 21, 1917, in the Omaha Freight Yards while attempting to arrest three males. Cross attempted to arrest the men after catching Panel: 11 them breaking into a freight car. Two suspects fled, Line: 7 however, the third shot Agent Cross once in the head and twice in the body. He was 23 years old at the time of his death. Captain of Detectives Charles E. Hall County: Lancaster County Agency: Lincoln Police Dept. 53 End of Watch: Lincoln Police Department Captain of Detectives Charles E. Hall died early Saturday morning March 31, 1917, after the car he was riding in plunged into the ditch near 33rd and Adams Street. It is believed that Panel: 13 Detective Hall and his driver, Frank Feeney, were in Line: 4 pursuit of a stolen auto at the time of the accident. Hall had been Chief of Police in O'Neill and later elected Sheriff of Holt County. Detective Hall was 53 years old and survived by his wife, Rhoda, and four children.

9 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Special Agent Ray W. Daugherty County: Platte County Agency: Union Pacific 24 End of Watch: Cause of Death Train Accident Union Pacific Special Agent Ray W. Daugherty was killed at about 5:00 a.m. on Monday, November 19, It is believed that a Union Pacific train struck Daugherty as it crossed the Loup River Bridge west of Columbus. Daugherty was assigned to guard the bridge Panel: 5 and was killed instantly when struck by the engine of Line: 6 the train. It is believed that he did not hear the approaching train because of another train going by at the same time. Agent Daugherty was 24 years old and survived by his wife and several children. He had been on the job for only four days when he was killed. Detective Frank J. Rooney End of Watch: Detective Frank J. Murphy 25 End of Watch: Omaha Detective Frank J. Rooney was shot at about 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 1918, in a gun battle with robbery suspects after having entered a two-story bungalow at 3207 North 14th Street. Detective Rooney, along with other officers of the Omaha Police Department, received a tip about the location and hideout of a gang of thieves. Members of the gang had held up a jewelry store at 1514 Dodge Street at about 3:30 p.m. that afternoon. The officers raided the bungalow and encountered six gang members. As they began to search the room one of the suspects produced a gun and began shooting. Detective Rooney was struck in the abdomen and collapsed. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and died at about 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, Panel: 6 Line: 2 Omaha Detective Frank J. Murphy, Jr. was shot and mortally wounded on July 16th, 1919, and died on Wednesday, July 23. On the previous Wednesday at about 2:30 a.m., detectives Murphy, Lundeen and Farrand observed an individual matching the description of a suspect in several holdups. Murphy Panel: 4 called out for the man to stop and, as he stepped out of the patrol car, the suspect turned and shot him. His Line: 3 assailant, Judd Tobias, was shot by Detective Lundeen. Tobias later died from his injuries. Initially it was believed Detective Murphy would survive his wounds, however gangrene set in and he later died. Detective Murphy was 25 years old and survived by his wife. Chief Sheldon C. Mecomber County: Lincoln County Agency: North Platte 63 End of Watch: North Platte Police Chief Sheldon C. Mecomber was shot and killed at about 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15, 1920 at Nick Chiro's Pool Hall on East Front Street in the same shooting incident that took the life of George Rodgers (above). Chief Mecomber died instantly from a single gunshot wound to the head. He was 63 years old and was survived by his wife and two children. Panel: 16 Line: 4

10 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Patrolman George E. Rodgers County: Lincoln County Agency: North Platte End of Watch: North Platte Patrolman George E. Rodgers died at about 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 1920, after being shot an hour earlier at Nick Chiro's Pool Hall on East Front Street. Rodgers and Chief Sheldon Mecomber caught two men gambling and were attempting to arrest them when the shooting occurred. The two lawmen approached the suspects telling them Panel: 17 that they were under arrest, and as the men withdrew Line: 2 their hands from their pockets they pulled out revolvers and shot and killed both officers. Nick Chiro, the pool hall's owner, shot one of the suspects as the two tried to flee. The other suspect was successful in escaping. Rodgers was survived by his wife and two children. Detective Arthur G. Cooper 41 End of Watch: Omaha Detective Arthur G. Cooper was shot at about 8:45 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 1921, and died from his gunshot wounds at about 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1. Detectives Cooper and Wavrin were assigned to investigate a burglary case after a suspect had contacted the burglary victim, regarding the return of some stolen property. Detective Cooper pretended to Panel: 5 be the victim and set up a meeting at 17th and Howard. Line: 3 A short time later a suspect arrived and motioned for Cooper to follow him. The suspect started down the street with Cooper behind, when he suddenly turned and shot the detective three times. Detective Cooper was taken to Clarkson Hospital where he slipped into a coma, and later died. Cooper was 41 years old, and was survived by his wife, Mamie, and a daughter. Robert L. Taylor County: Lancaster County Agency: Department of Corrections 54 End of Watch: Cause of Death Stabbed 5 Department of Corrections Robert L. Taylor died from stab wounds at about 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, He was on guard duty in the west cell house when attacked by convict James B. King, who was later executed for the murder. Taylor was 54 years old at the time of his death, and was survived by his five children. Panel: 12 Line: 6 Special Agent Lewis R. (Louis Gustason on Memorial) Gustafson Agency: NW Railroad 29 End of Watch: Single James E. Scott 32 End of Watch: Single Northwestern Railroad Special Agent Lewis R. Gustafson was shot at about 7:15 p.m. on Monday, September 26, 1921, near 14th and Webster. Gustafson was standing outside the Northwestern and Missouri Pacific Freight house when two men came running by. Agent Gustafson called for the men to stop. One of the Panel: 6 men stopped, turned and fired a handgun striking Line: 4 Gustafson in the neck. Gustafson died at about 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday September 27, His killers escaped from the scene. He was 29 years old and single at the time of his death. Omaha James E. Scott was shot to death at about 10:40 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 1922 near 32nd and "A" Street while on foot patrol. Two girls who witnessed the shooting said they overheard three suspects making threatening remarks about ambushing Scott moments before he was killed. Scott had ejected the three men from a soft drink shop located at Panel: 7 31st and "A" Street earlier in the day, so these men Line: 5 were considered prime suspects. Scott was shot three times, once in the chest and twice in the left arm. He managed to fire at least three shots at his assailants before collapsing. Scott was appointed to the Omaha Police Department on December 6, He was 32 years old and single at the time of his death.

Heiser County: Keith County Agency: Keith County 46 End of Watch: Detective Frank S. Aughe 50 End of Watch: Scottsbluff Albert W. Peterson was shot at about 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 1923, in Mitchell, Nebraska. Peterson and Scotts Bluff County Deputy Sheriff Carlson went to Mitchell to look for a man named Frank Randall who was wanted in connection with a bootlegging operation. Arriving at a residence, the officers heard someone leaving through the back door. They observed a subject standing near a Panel: 11 garage and called out to him. The man responded by Line: 3 firing two shots at the lawmen, the first striking Peterson in the stomach. The second shot passed through both of Carlson's forearms, crippling him. Peterson was taken into the house and a doctor was summoned. He died at about 10:20 p.m. Peterson was 43 years old and survived by his wife, Bina. Sheriff George N. Heiser was shot and killed at about 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 1923, while leading law enforcement officers on a search for the murderer of Scottsbluff Police Albert Peterson, who had been killed less than a week earlier. They had learned that the suspect was hiding in a house on the Ritt Panel: 14 Ranch in Arthur County. Sheriff Heiser discovered the Line: 4 suspect and, upon ordering him out of hiding, was shot and killed when the man suddenly produced a handgun. The other officers then opened fire, killing the suspect. Heiser was 46 years old and survived by his wife, Myrtle. Omaha Detective Frank S. Aughe was shot and killed on Thursday, January 31, Aughe and three other detectives were searching for a man wanted in connection with a drug store robbery when they observed a man matching the bandit's description, near 16th and William Street. Detectives Killion, Murphy Panel: 12 and Davis prepared to enter a store behind the suspect Line: 2 who, unbeknown to them, had drawn his weapon. As the suspect turned to run out the door, Detective Aughe entered. The two men began to struggle. Aughe was shot six times and died at about 3:30 p.m. He was 50 years old and survived by his wife and daughter. Chief Asa L. Ransom County: Kearney County Agency: Minden 44 End of Watch: Minden Chief of Police Asa L. Ransom was shot and killed during the early morning hours on Sunday, October 19, The shooting occurred about 5 1Ú2 miles northeast of Minden on the D-L-D Highway. Chief Ransom was searching for escapees from the Minden jail that had burglarized businesses in the town the previous night. Ransom and a special deputy set up Panel: 13 a roadblock north of town and stopped a suspicious Line: 3 vehicle. As Chief Ransom approached and began talking to the occupants, shots rang out. Ransom fell, mortally wounded, and died a few minutes later. The two men escaped but were identified later and captured. Chief Ransom was 44 years old and survived by his wife, Laura, and three sons.

Clark County: Lincoln County Agency: North Platte End of Watch: Marshal George C. Albee County: Garden County Agency: Oshkosh 45 End of Watch: Sheriff Myles S. Keller died in a North Platte hospital from a gunshot wound at about 3:15 p.m. on November 9, He was shot by a subject while making an arrest on Friday, October 31, 1924, in Elsie, Nebraska. Sheriff Keller was called to Elsie on a disturbance and located the suspect. As Keller proceeded to arrest the Panel: 16 subject, he suddenly pulled a concealed handgun and Line: 2 shot the lawman in the stomach. Keller returned fire and wounded the suspect. He then disarmed the suspect before collapsing. Both were taken to North Platte for emergency treatment. Sheriff Keller was 40 years old and survived by his wife, Hazel, and two children. North Platte Patrolman Edward J. Clark was shot and killed at about 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 24, North Platte police were informed by Kansas authorities to watch for two men in a blue touring car. Patrolman Clark, driving a police motorcycle, was detailed to watch the South River Bridge for the suspects. When he observed a vehicle matching the description, he stopped the car and became involved in a heated argument with the occupants. Clark was shot in the back as he turned away from the suspects, who then fled back into Kansas and were involved in the murder of a Sheriff while engaged in a gun battle. One of the suspects was captured and the other was killed near Atlus, Oklahoma. Panel: 6 Line: 7 Oshkosh Marshal George C. Albee died at about 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 24, 1926, as a result of a shootout with an armed subject. Albee had observed a 55-year-old man driving a car in a reckless manner. He stopped the man and told him to go home. The man instead went to a local hardware store and obtained a.45 caliber pistol. Albee later encountered the man again and a shootout ensued. Marshal Albee connected Panel: 14 with a round from his rifle, but as he approached the Line: 2 fallen man, the subject fired a round and Albee was struck in the chest. He continued toward the fallen man and struggled with him, even striking him with his handgun. However, Albee died at about 4:45 p.m. Marshal Albee was 45 years old and survived by his wife, Edith, and seven children. Detective Sergeant William M. Davis 29 End of Watch: Omaha Detective Sergeant William M. Davis died at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 1927, from injuries suffered in a car-truck crash. The crash occurred at about noon at 31st and Curtis Ave. Davis was riding in a new police car driven by Detective Tom Panel: 9 Ryan. The officers were headed south on 31st street Line: 2 when the car collided with a heavy paving truck. Davis was pinned in the vehicle for a time. After being taken to Nicholas Senn Hospital, he died from his injuries. Davis was 29 years old when he was killed. Deputy William Adams County: Thurston County Agency: Thurston County SO 54 End of Watch: Single Deputy Sheriff William Adams was shot and killed at about 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 1927, while attempting to take a jail escapee into custody. Deputy Adams died from a single gunshot wound to the chest he sustained at the Frank Lewis farm four miles north of Winnebago. Wesely Bradford had escaped Friday evening from the county jail, and Deputy Adams had received information that Bradford was hiding in the Lewis house. Adams was climbing through a window to search for the man, Bradofr shot him. The killer was captured a short time later. Deputy Adams was 54 years old and single at the time of his death. Nelson County: Cheyenne County Agency: Cheyenne County SO 54 End of Watch: Deputy Howard C. McCallum County: Otoe County Agency: Otoe County SO 41 End of Watch: North Platte Police Patrolman Edward H. Green died at about 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, Green was shot with a sawed-off shotgun as he tried to arrest a man identified as Louis Seelman, who had been ordered to leave town rather than paying a $ fine for beating a woman. Seelman did leave town but when he returned on Saturday, July 13, Patrolman Green and another officer were sent to find him. The two lawmen went to the Humming Bird Inn on West 7th Street, with Green checking upstairs, and the other officer searching downstairs. The other officer heard a shotgun blast and fled the building. Responding officers found Green shot in the head. Seelman refused to surrender and later shot and killed himself. Green was 43 years old and survived by his wife, Helen, and daughter, Virginia. Sheriff James M. Nelson was shot at about noon on Thursday, February 20, 1930, by a man who had escaped from the State Insane Asylum in Hastings. Sheriff Nelson and Deputy Sheriff Richard Carlson observed the subject about 1 1/2 miles north of Sidney and attempted to make contact. The suspect started shooting as soon as Nelson stepped from the car. He was struck in the head and fell back into the car. Carlson attempted to flee and was shot twice but survived. The crazed man then returned and shot Nelson once again in the car. The suspect was later shot by a posse that had been formed to capture him. Sheriff Nelson died at about 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, He was 54 years old, and was survived by his wife, Gertrude, and six children. Panel: 17 Line: 7 Panel: 17 Line: 5 Deputy Sheriff Howard C. McCallum died from a gunshot wound at about 11:55 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, McCallum was in the Sheriff's Office at the County Courthouse when a suspect in a burglary case entered the building. The suspect pulled a revolver when he was confronted, then ran from the Panel: 17 courthouse with McCallum not far behind. The suspect Line: 4 turned and fired, fatally wounding the lawman. The Otoe County Sheriff continued the chase through city streets, finally shooting and killing the suspect. Deputy McCallum was 41 years old and survived by his wife, Florence, and six children. Detective Sergeant Fred A. Kruger End of Watch: James J. Sullivan 31 End of Watch: Omaha Police Detective Sergeant Fred A. Kruger died at about 3:15 p.m. on Monday, November 17, Detective Kruger and Sergeant Ray Strong were looking for bank robbery suspects when they observed some suspicious men near 16th and Wirt Street. The detectives ordered the suspects to step out of their car, and as one of them stepped out, Kruger observed the other concealing something and grabbed for the man's sleeve. The subject pulled away and, as Kruger spun around to flee, the suspect shot him six times in the back. Mortally wounded, Kruger still managed to fire four shots at the fleeing suspect before collapsing and dying. Detective Strong chased the suspect but he managed to escape. He was later captured on the grounds of Fort Omaha. Detective Kruger was an 11- year veteran of the Omaha Police Department and was survived by his wife. Panel: 10 Line: 3 Omaha James J. Sullivan was shot while assigned to a robbery stakeout at the Coryell Oil Station at 39th and Parker on Saturday, April 4, At about 11:10 p.m. two suspects entered the station and began to rob the attendant. Sullivan was concealed in a small restroom and was heard by one of Panel: 11 the suspects. When he opened fire on the armed men, Line: 4 they returned fire, striking Sullivan four times. He returned fire before collapsing, but the men managed to escape. Sullivan died from his wounds at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 5, He was 31 years old and survived by his wife.

Fowler County: Dodge County Agency: Union Pacific 42 End of Watch: Special Duty Patrolman Marion F. Marshall County: Lancaster County Agency: Lincoln Police Dept. 35 End of Watch: Federal Agent Chester A. Mason County: Gage County Agency: Federal Agent 28 End of Watch: Missouri Pacific Special Agent Benjamin J. Kelly was shot at about 9:45 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 1932, near Salem, Nebraska, as he and two other officers searched for suspects involved in stealing copper wire. Agent Kelly and others were informed that thieves were stealing the wire from telephone lines and the lawmen went to investigate. Kelly and U.P. Special Agent Oscar Peterson, along with Richardson County Sheriff's Deputy Ivan Weltmer, observed a car as it pulled out of a dead-end lane on the J. M. Wickham farm. As the officers pulled up along side the suspects' car, shots were fired and Kelly was hit while seated in the passenger seat. He died about 30 minutes later. Agent Kelly was 56 years old and survived by his wife and two children. Panel: 2 Line: 6 Union Pacific Railroad Special Agent Norman G. Fowler was shot and killed at about 9:00 p.m. on Monday, August 29, 1932 near Ames, Nebraska. Agent Fowler had been assigned to guard a shipment leaving Panel: 13 from Fremont and was found alongside the tracks Line: 5 about a mile east of Ames. He had been shot in the head and chest with a.45 caliber handgun. Agent Fowler was 42 years old and survived by his wife. Lincoln Special Duty Patrolman Marion F. Marshall died on Friday, September 9, 1932, after being shot at about midnight two days prior. Patrolman Marshall observed a suspicious subject in the alley between 15th and 16th Streets and between "G" and "H" Streets in Lincoln. When the Patrolman stopped to identify him, Panel: 2 the subject pulled a concealed.32 caliber revolver and Line: 7 shot Marshall. He managed to crawl to the governor's mansion and summoned help from Governor Bryan. The Governor summoned authorities and Marshall was taken to the hospital where he passed away. Patrolman Marshall was 35 years old and survived by his wife, Eva, and three children. Federal Agent Chester A. Mason was shot and killed at about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 1932, about three miles southeast of Beatrice. Agent Mason had enlisted the aid of an informant and set a trap for a Panel: 5 man suspected of manufacturing and distributing illegal Line: 7 alcohol. After meeting with the suspect, Agent Mason was shot in the head and killed instantly as he attempted to arrest the man. Agent Mason was 28 years old and survived by his wife and three children. Marshal Albert L. Suverkrubbe County: Washington County Agency: Ft. Calhoun Marshal 46 End of Watch: Ft. Calhoun Marshal Albert L. Suverkrubbe was shot at about 3:00 a.m. on Monday, December 5, 1932 while attempting to arrest two men suspected of burglary. When Suverkrubbe located a suspicious vehicle in town he attempted to make a stop and, as the subjects began to drive away, he fired at their vehicle. The Panel: 5 suspects returned fire and struck the lawman once in the lower abdomen near his right hip. Marshal Line: 4 Suverkrubbe was taken to Covenant Hospital. Initially it was believed that he would survive, but infection set in and he died from the complications to the injury. Marshal Suverkrubbe was 46 years old and survived by his wife, Frances, and two sons.

15 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Noah F. Harrison County: Lincoln County Agency: North Platte 40 End of Watch: North Platte Police Noah F. Harrison died at about 4:00 a.m. on Friday, April 21, Harrison was shot and mortally wounded when he stopped a suspicious car near 502 West 11th Street at about 4:00 a.m. the previous morning. Upon opening the door of the car, Harrison was shot by the driver. The men, later identified as Joy Crow and Charles Robinson, escaped but were later captured. The car they had fled contained stolen bags of sugar from a railroad car at the local yard. For the crimes, Crow was convicted and sentenced to 99 years, while Robinson was convicted and sentenced to 10 years. Harrison was 40 years old and survived by his wife, Annetia. Panel: 15 Line: 2 Special Duty Patrolman Otto P. Peterson 46 End of Watch: Widowed 2 Omaha Special Duty Patrolman Otto P. Peterson was shot at about 10:30 p.m. on Monday, July 17, 1933, while contacting two suspicious men near 31st and Poppleton Avenue. Peterson was shot once in the chest and once in the head. He died at about 1:05 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, The assailants were later identified as Cecil Thornbrugh and Hank Thornbrugh. Cecil was later captured in another state after a shootout with authorities. Hank was killed in a another shootout. Patrolman Peterson was 46 years old and widowed. He was survived by his two children. Panel: 12 Line: 5 Reynold E. Wolfe 25 End of Watch: Omaha Reynold E. Wolfe was shot at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 1935, and died about an hour later. Wolfe and Clarence Drehsen were patrolling near 22nd and Poppleton Avenue when they observed a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle that had fled from the scene of an armed robbery at Stahmer Brother's Grocery, 2702 South 20th Street. The suspects crashed near the Panel: 1 Peterson Baking Company, and Wolfe and Drehsen Line: 5 approached. Two suspects emerged and began firing at the officers. Drehsen was struck in the left leg and Wolfe was struck in the chest with a shotgun blast. One of the suspects died in a shootout with responding officers and the other was captured. Wolfe was 25 years old and survived by his wife, Mary. Leslie G. Chamberlin 22 End of Watch: Cause of Death Motorcycle Accident Omaha Leslie G. Chamberlin died at about 8:10 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 1935, from injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash that occurred at about 10:30 p.m. the previous night as Chamberlin pursued a speeding vehicle. A car traveling east on Dodge Street near 48th stopped to let Chamberlin's partner, Fred Drefs, pass. As the car began to turn left into a vacant lot at 4820 Dodge Street, Chamberlin's motorcycle crashed into the car. Chamberlin was 22 years old and survived by his wife, Mildred. Panel: 8 Line: 2 Detective Sergeant Joseph J. Treglia 41 End of Watch: Omaha Detective Sergeant Joseph J. Treglia was shot while transporting a burglary suspect along with Detective Charles Swanson near 33rd and Harney at about 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17, The suspect suddenly drew a semi-auto pistol and shot Detective Treglia once in the chest. He then turned his weapon on Swanson and shot him, as well. However, Swanson Panel: 9 Line: 3 returned fire and killed the subject. Detective Swanson then drove to Nicholas Senn Hospital were everything possible was done to treat Detective Treglia. At about 4:50 p.m., Treglia passed away from his wound. He was 41 years old and survived by his wife, Hazel, and two children.

Smoyer County: Boone County Agency: Boone County SO 41 End of Watch: Constable William Wathen County: Boone County Agency: End of Watch: Federal Agent Norval L. DeArmond County: Gage County Agency: Federal Agent 53 End of Watch: Sheriff George H. Little died at about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 1937, from injuries suffered in a one-car crash north of Norfolk. Sheriff Little was taking Sheriff Ed Schwartz back to Pierce where Little was to testify in a civil case. Shortly after midnight on May 19th, Sheriff Little failed to negotiate a curve about five miles north of Norfolk and slammed his car into an embankment. Little suffered head and chest injuries and passed away that evening. Sheriff Little was 43 years old and survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and six children. Panel: 15 Line: 7 Sheriff Lawrence I. Smoyer was shot with a fellow lawman on Thursday, June 17, 1937, about 6 miles north of Akron, NE, west of Albion. Sheriff Smoyer had received a report of suspicious subjects apparently hiding out in the area and asked Constable William Wathen to accompany him in checking out the report. Panel: 3 In doing so, the Sheriff was struck with a bullet and Line: 4 died instantly. Two suspects were identified in the case, but never arrested or charged. The case remains unsolved. Smoyer was 41 years old and survived by his wife, Lillian, and six children. Constable William Wathen was shot in the same incident that took the life of Sheriff Lawrence Smoyer (shown above). On June 17, 1937, the two lawmen responded to a report about 6 miles north of Akron, NE, regarding some suspicious subjects that were said to be hiding in the area. When they arrived to investigate, Constable Wathen, who had been asked by Sheriff Smoyer to accompany him, was wounded and remained in critical condition for nearly four months until his death on Sunday, October 3, 1937, at about 1:50 a.m. While two subjects were identified in the case, they were never arrested or charged, and the case remains unsolved. Federal Agent Norval L. DeArmond died as a result of injuries sustained in a one-car crash that occurred on December 8, 1939, southeast of Barneston, Nebraska. Agent DeArmond and Agent Jack Lee were pursuing a stolen vehicle suspected of illegally importing alcohol into Kansas, a dry state. Agent DeArmond was seriously injured when the vehicle the agents were operating failed to negotiate a curve on a county road and crashed. DeArmond was 53 years of age at the time of his death. Panel: 4 Line: 5 Panel: 7 Line: 7 Marshal Leo Wilke County: Dakota County Agency: Homer Marshal 34 End of Watch: Cause of Death Explosion Homer Marshal Leo Wilke died from injuries he received at about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, Heavy flooding in the area had reached a local bar in Homer and while Marshal Wilke was trying to rescue people from inside, an explosion occurred. Wilke suffered a fatal head injury in the explosion. Marshal Wilke was 34 years old and survived by his wife, Margarette. Panel: 16 Line: 7

17 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Sheriff George H. Brock County: Loup County Agency: Loup County SO 43 End of Watch: Patrolman Loyal M. Zink County: Cheyenne County Agency: Ne State Patrolman 44 End of Watch: Sheriff George H. Brock was shot and fatally wounded on Wednesday, October 16, The shooting occurred at about 12:40 p.m. at the Valleyview School as draft registration was taking place. Sheriff Brock had trouble with Richard Birkes about two weeks prior when he attempted to serve an eviction notice. Brock was met with threats against his life when he attempted to evict the family from their ranch. Knowing that Panel: 8 Birkes would come to the school for draft registration Line: 6 on the 16th, Brock returned to Taylor and asked that a warrant be issued for him. When Birkes showed up Brock attempted to arrest him and a scuffle ensued. Brock was shot in the face and shoulder and died a short time later. Birkes was captured and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Sheriff Brock was 43 years old and survived by his wife, Lela May, and six children. Nebraska State Patrolman Loyal M. Zink died as a result of injuries he sustained when his patrol car was involved in a collision with a gravel truck about 10 miles west of Sidney. State Patrolman Zink died at about 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, It is believed that Zink was in pursuit of a speeder moments before the collision. With the emergency red lights and Panel: 2 siren activated, Zink was eastbound on Highway #30 Line: 5 when a gravel truck made a left turn in front of him. The driver of the truck was turning into the Sioux Ordinance Depot at the time of the collision. Patrolman Zink was 44 years old and survived by his wife, Wilda, and two sons, Ronald and Lyle. Marshal Arthur A. Athey County: Clay County Agency: Fairfield Marshal 66 End of Watch: Single Fairfield Marshal Arthur A. Athey died at about 3:45 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 1945, from injuries suffered after being struck by a speeding vehicle. Athey was at the side of the road on foot when he was struck, attempting to wave the speeding vehicle over and, inadvertently, stepping into the vehicle's path. The driver was to leave the next morning for duty in the Panel: 2 armed forces and had been out with friends for his last Line: 4 night at home. A coroner's jury absolved the driver of any criminal charges and he was allowed to leave for military duty the following day. Marshal Athey was 66 years old and single. He had been the Marshal of Fairfield for five years. Charles N. Overman County: Gage County Agency: Wymore 58 End of Watch: Wymore Charles N. Overman was shot at about 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30, 1948, in front of the Wymore City Jail. Overman had arrested a suspected drunk driver and transported him to the jail just before the shooting. As Overman pulled up in front of the jail, the suspect suddenly pulled out a.32 caliber revolver and shot the officer. The suspect first tried to flee but then stopped and shot himself in the head. Overman died from his wounds at about 7:00 p.m. that night. He was 58 years old and survived by his wife, Ann, and two children. Panel: 13 Line: 1

18 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Richard E. Leyden County: Lancaster County Agency: Lincoln Police Dept. End of Watch: Cause of Death Motorcycle Accident Engaged Lincoln Police Motorcycle Richard E. Leyden died at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, September 26, 1949, of injuries suffered in an auto accident. The accident occurred at about 7:10 p.m. on 16th Street Panel: 13 between "G" and "H". Leyden's motorcycle Line: 7 struck the left front end of a pickup truck and he was thrown from the vehicle, suffering severe head injuries. Leyden was to be married just six days later. Marshal James J. Guerin Agency: US Marshal 38 End of Watch: Deputy U.S Marshal James J. Guerin died at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 1951, when the car he was driving collided with a semitractor trailer hauling concrete slabs. The accident occurred on West Dodge Road just west of the Elkhorn River. Deputy Guerin was returning to Omaha from North Bend, where he had been serving papers. Marshal Guerin was 38 years old and survived by his wife, Albertina. Panel: 10 Line: 4 Chief Chester (Chet) Calkins County: Holt County Agency: O'Neill 51 End of Watch: O'Neill Chief of Police Chester (Chet) Calkins was shot and killed at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 1952, just off Main Street in O'Neill, after apparently observing someone stealing from parked cars. His brother, Night Policeman Walt Calkins, found Chief Calkins in his patrol car at about 2:00 a.m. Calkins had been shot five times at close range while seated in the patrol car. Joseph McLimans was later identified as a suspect in the case, convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Calkins was 51 years old and survived by his wife, Hazel, and three children. Panel: 3 Line: 6 Trooper Sergeant John T. Meistrell County: Dodge County Agency: NE State Trooper 43 End of Watch: Nebraska State Patrol Sergeant John T. Meistrell died at 11:40 a.m. on Friday, April 10, 1953, from injuries sustained in an automobile crash. Sgt. Meistrell was headed west on Highway #275 toward Hooper at about 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, when he lost control of his patrol car and struck a tree. Meistrell was hospitalized in critical condition until the time of his death. He was 43 years old and survived by his wife, Lillian, and two children. Panel: 14 Line: 7 Trooper Vernon C. Rolfs County: Lincoln County Agency: NE State Trooper 38 End of Watch: Nebraska State Trooper Vernon C. Rolfs was shot and killed at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 1953, about a mile and a half east of North Platte on Highway #30. Rolfs stopped a speeding vehicle and took the driver into custody. A passenger in the suspect's car continued on toward North Platte but the vehicle stalled Panel: 4 and the passenger then joined Rolfs and the suspect. On Line: 6 the east edge of North Platte, the origional suspect pulled out a.45 caliber revolver and shot the trooper in his side. Trooper Rolfs died from his wound and the suspect was later captured. Trooper Rolfs was 38 years old and survived by his wife and two children.

Eschenbrenner County: Dawes County Agency: Crawford 62 End of Watch: Cause of Death Heart Attack 2 Nebraska State Patrolman Marvin L. Hansen died from a gunshot wound at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 1954, near Valentine, Nebraska. Hansen and Cherry County Sheriff Bill Freeman had staked out a nearby road, having received a tip that it would be used by two suspects Ñ the Grandsinger brothers Ñ while transporting a stolen vehicle into the sand hills with the intention of stripping it for parts. The two lawmen stopped the suspects as they drove by, arresting Leon Grandsinger while brother Llyod fled from the scene. Panel: 15 Hansen gave chase and was shot in the lower abdomen Line: 6 about 200 feet west of the road. He died a short time later. While Leon Grandsinger plead guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in the State Penitentiary, brother Lloyd appealed his conviction and electric chair sentence, received a new trial, and was acquitted and freed after a second trial. Hansen was 28 years old and was survived by his wife, Lorraine. Corrections John M. Claussen was discovered on the floor of the penitentiary print shop at about 11:10 a.m. on Friday, April 16, Claussen had been beaten and stabbed, and died about a half hour later. Nineteen prisoners had left the print shop at 10:30 a.m. An intensive investigation was launched and on Saturday, May 15, 1954, Joseph E. DeYonghe was identified as the prime suspect in the murder of Claussen. Claussen was 70 years old and survived by his wife, Emma, and five children. Panel: 16 Line: 3 Crawford Chief of Police Charles W. Eschenbrenner died as a result of a heart attack following a call and arrest of a barricaded man with hostages. Chief Eschenbrenner died at about 2:35 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 1955, shortly after the suspect surrendered. Chief Eschenbrenner had attempted to negotiate the subject into surrendering. When this failed he called for Panel: 7 tear gas. When the canisters of tear gas arrived, he Line: 2 decided to throw them through a basement window. While doing this, the suspect fired a shot at the lawman. Eschenbrenner was not wounded but suffered a heart attack following the attempt on his life. Chief Eschenbrenner was 62 years old and survived by his wife, Bertha, and two children. Trooper Duane R. Nichols Agency: NE State Trooper 31 End of Watch: Nebraska State Trooper Duane F. Nichols died from injuries suffered in a head-on collision on Thursday, July 24, The crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Highway #275 near the west edge of Waterloo. He collided with a car driven by a suspected drunk driver. Trooper Nichols was killed instantly. Trooper Nichols was 31 years old and survived by his wife, Gertrude, and three children. Panel: 11 Line: 5 James H. Ray County: Scotts Bluff County Agency: Gering 62 End of Watch: Gering James H. Ray died from injuries he received in a crash involving his patrol car and a water truck on Friday, August 7, Ray was assisting the driver of the water truck in locating the road to Melbeta, Nebraska. Ray was in front of the truck and signaled a turn into the Circle S Motel when the driver misunderstood the signal and began passing the patrol car. As Ray turned left the truck struck his car and both vehicles went into the ditch. Ray was trapped in the vehicle and died from his injuries. He was 62 years old and survived by his wife, Alma, and daughter. Panel: 12 Line: 4

Costello 33 End of Watch: Cause of Death Motorcycle Accident 5 Sheriff Samuelson D. Johnson was shot and killed at about 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 15, 1961, while serving a warrant on a subject believed to be insane. Johnson and Special Deputy Aaron Hadfield went to the Hubert Heule residence located about 6 miles southeast of Fullerton. When they arrived, Johnson went into the house and asked Hadfield to wait. When Johnson didn't return, Hadfield went to the door of the house and observed Johnson in a struggle with Heule. Johnson managed to escape and the two lawmen sought Panel: 5 cover in a nearby barn. Heule had obtained a shotgun Line: 5 and came after the two men. Johnson instructed Hadfield to run out the back door while he attempted to make it to his car where he had a revolver in the glove box. Hadfield escaped and watched in horror as Sheriff Johnson was shot down in the laneway to the farm. Hadfield then saw Heule flee in his modified car, but he was later captured in Kansas. Sheriff Johnson was 60 years old and survived by his wife and three children. Omaha Motorcycle John E. Costello died from injuries sustained when his police motorcycle collided with a car near 48th and Center on May 22, Costello was on patrol heading eastbound when Panel: 9 a small, foreign car turned left in front of him. Line: 6 Costello remained in a coma until he passed away at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, He was 33 years old and survived by his wife, Rita, and five children. Trooper Raymond M. Koerber County: Cass County Agency: NE State Trooper 35 End of Watch: Nebraska State Trooper Raymond M. Koerber died from injuries sustained in a car crash at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 18, Trooper Koerber was in pursuit of a speeding vehicle on Highway #75 on the west edge of Plattsmouth when another vehicle began Panel: 2 Line: 3 backing out in front of his car. Koerber struck the backing vehicle and slammed into an oncoming truck. Trooper Koerber was 35 years old and was survived by his wife, Josephine, and five children. Deputy James J. Drahota County: Madison County Agency: Madison County SO 52 End of Watch: Deputy Sheriff James J. Drahota died at about 4:55 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 1962, from injuries he suffered in a two-car crash. The collision occurred about 8 1/2 miles south of Norfolk on Highway #81, at about 1:00 p.m. when Sheriff Burt Ray Jr. observed a vehicle driven by a youth believed under age to drive. Deputy Drahota was a passenger in the patrol car and Panel: 15 the two officers followed the youth until he turned into Line: 3 a farm lane. Sheriff Ray pulled to the shoulder and then began to turn his car around. As he began to turn the car around on the highway, a northbound car slammed into the passenger side of the patrol car. Six others, including Sheriff Ray, were hospitalized following the crash. Deputy Drahota was 52 years old and survived by his wife, Florence, and eight children.

Frank H. Soukup County: Lancaster County Agency: Lincoln Police Dept. 53 End of Watch: Sheriff Ivan R. Newell County: Thurston County Agency: Thurston County SO 46 End of Watch: Deputy Sheriff Floyd E. Kindler died at about 11:55 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 1963, from a heart attack following an intense struggle with a subject he was attempting to arrest. Deputy Kindler had been called to Bellwood, Nebraska, by the town Marshal following a disturbance there. Kindler confronted several subjects at a saloon in Bellwood and asked them to accompany him outside. After exiting the bar, he was assaulted by one of the men. Deputy Kindler arrested one of the subjects and transported him to jail in David City. After securing his prisoner, Kindler collapsed in the jail. He was taken to the hospital but never regained consciousness. Deputy Kindler was 42 years old and was survived by his wife, Frieda. Stuart Village Marshal James D. Addison was shot at about 10:35 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 1964, west of the town square in Stuart. Addison had arrested an 18 year-old male for a traffic offense and jailed him, having stopped the same individual the week before and giving the same warning. The father of the arrested youth contacted the county attorney and police magistrate, wanting his son released from jail. The father encountered Addison near the square and argued with him about his son's incarceration. The man pulled a revolver and shot the Marshal twice. Addison's wife witnessed the shooting and, with assistance from two local youths, rushed him to Atkison Hospital. Addison died during surgery at about 11:00 p.m. He was 51 years old and survived by his wife, Bernice, and three children. Panel: 18 Line: 7 Panel: 4 Line: 8 Lincoln Police Detective Lt. Frank H. Soukup was shot at about 10:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, Lt. Soukup and two other detectives were investigating a forgery case and went to the Midtown Motel located at 2420 "O" Street to continue the investigation. Upon arrival the officers encountered four men and a woman Panel: 17 inside a room at 2413 "P" Street. During questioning of Line: 1 the suspects, one of the men produced a handgun and shot Soukup. The officers returned fire and killed the suspect. Lt. Soukup was immediately rushed to the hospital but died from his wounds. He was 53 years old and survived by his wife, Bernice, and three children. Sheriff Ivan R. Newell died at about 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, January 19, 1967, as a result of injuries suffered in a head-on crash. Sheriff Newell was a passenger in a car driven by State Deputy Sheriff Wallis Miller. The two officers were heading to a call in Macy at about 4:35 p.m. when a collision occurred about three miles west of Walthill on Highway #94. Cresting a hill, Miller suddenly came upon a vehicle driven by Alonzo Watson. Mr. Watson was pulling his car out onto the highway and Miller swerved to avoid striking him. At the same time, Mrs. J. Bodlak was headed home from her job in Walthill. She saw the patrol car with the lights flashing and pulled off the highway. Miller's patrol car struck Bodlak's car nearly head-on. Miller, Mrs. Bodlak, and Sheriff Newell were all taken by ambulance to the Pender Hospital. Newell was pronounced dead a short time after arriving. Sheriff Newell was sworn into office on January 5, 1967, just two weeks earlier. He was 46 years old and survived by his wife, Fern, and six children. Panel: 4 Line: 4

Panel: TBA Line: TBA Detective Paul B. Whitehead County: Lancaster County Agency: Lincoln Police Dept. 30 End of Watch: Lincoln Police Detective Paul B. Whitehead was shot and killed at about 12:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 10, 1967, near 28th and "O" Street. Detective Whitehead and Detective Paul Merritt observed an out of state car leaving a gas station near that location and initiated a traffic stop. As Whitehead contacted a man who stepped from the vehicle, Merritt watched the other occupants. Whitehead asked the subject for identification and was shot by the subject with a concealed short shotgun. Merritt returned fire and seriously wounded the suspect. The other men escaped but were captured later. The three men were dangerous escapees from prison. Detective Whitehead was 30 years old and survived by his wife, Janet, and three children. Panel: 6 Line: 6 George W. Welter County: Lancaster County Agency: Lincoln Police Dept. 25 End of Watch: Lincoln Police Motorcycle George W. Welter died at about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 1968, from injuries he suffered in a collision with a station wagon at the intersection of 27th and "W" Street. Welter, who was responding to a report of a man lying in the street at 26th and "Q", had been southbound on 27th Street when he collided with the car. He had his emergency equipment in operation at the time of the crash. Welter was 25 years old and survived by his wife, Sandra, and three children. Panel: 18 Line: 5 UP Agent Gerald A. Schuett County: Lincoln County Agency: Union Pacific 27 End of Watch: Cause of Death Train Accident 3 Union Pacific Agent Gerald A. Schuett was killed at about 3:40 a.m. on December 22, 1968, when he was struck by a passenger train in the North Platte yards. Schuett was checking rail cars during a snowstorm when the accident occurred. Agent Schuett was 27 years old and survived by his wife, Janice, and three children. Panel: 15 Line: 5 Larry D. Minard 29 End of Watch: Cause of Death Explosion 5 Omaha Larry D. Minard, Sr. died at about 2:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 1970, after an explosive device concealed in a suitcase blew up. Minard and other officers from the Omaha Police Department were on the scene of a disturbance at 2865 Ohio Street when Panel: 1 the explosion occurred. A total of eight officers were in Line: 5 the house at the time. Minard was closest to the suitcase when it detonated. Minard would have been 30 years old on August 20. Instead he was buried on his birthday. His wife, Karen, and five children survived him.

23 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Chief Richard R. Vandermate County: Garden County Agency: Oshkosh 32 End of Watch: Chief Samuel S. Stringfellow County: Boyd County Agency: Spencer 51 End of Watch: Oshkosh Chief of Police Richard R. Vandermate died at about 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 1971, from gunshot wounds he received at about 2:05 a.m. the previous day. Chief Vandermate was shot by a 17 yearold male while investigating a burglary at Larry's Lounge on Main Street. The suspect had escaped from the city jail earlier where he was serving a 90-day sentence. Chief Vandermate observed the suspect in the Panel: 8 tavern and called for him to surrender. Instead, the Line: 5 suspect shot the lawman with a.22 caliber rifle that had been stolen from a nearby hardware store. Vandermate crawled to his patrol car and turned on the siren. Citizens came to the officer's aid and he was taken to the hospital. He underwent surgery but died the following day. Chief Vandermate was 32 years old and survived by his wife, Juanita, and four children. Spencer Police Chief Samuel S. Stringfellow died at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 1971, from injuries sustained when a car struck him 1 mile west of Spencer on Highway #12. Chief Stringfellow was investigating a report of a stalled semi-tractor on the highway and had asked the driver to accompany him back to his patrol car. As they walked along the highway, the pair were struck by a passing 16 year-old driver. Chief Stringfellow was 51 years old and survived by his wife, Irene, and two daughters. Panel: 16 Line: 5 Trooper George W. Amos County: Dawson County Agency: NE State Trooper 28 End of Watch: Nebraska State Trooper George W. Amos, Jr. was shot and killed at about 4:45 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 1973, while attempting to arrest a suspected drunk driver near Lexington on I-80. Investigators later learned that Amos was attempting to arrest the suspected drunk driver when a passenger also became involved in the Panel: 10 struggle. The two suspects disarmed Trooper Amos Line: 6 and shot him once with his own service revolver. Two suspects, a married couple, were arrested near Gothenburg while attempting to escape. Amos was just 28 years old and was survived by his wife, Dolores, and two sons. Sergeant Franklin Furrer County: Lancaster County Agency: Lancaster Country SO 41 End of Watch: Cause of Death Collapsed 5 Sergeant Franklin Furrer suffered a heart attack at about 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, October 28, 1973, while executing a drug search warrant at a residence near Walton, Nebraska. Sgt. Furrer was guarding a suspect in the kitchen area of the house along with another deputy when he suddenly collapsed. Furrer was rushed to the hospital and remained in critical condition until he passed away at about 10:40 p.m. on Thursday, November 15, Sgt. Furrer was 41 years old and survived by his wife, Carmel, his daughters Chriss and Joy, and sons Dan, Andy, and Bill. Panel: 15 Line: 1 Deputy Raymond E. Timothy County: Richardson County Agency: Richardson County 67 End of Watch: Deputy Sheriff Raymond E. Timothy died at about 7:40 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 1973, from injuries suffered when struck by a pickup truck on October 30, Deputy Timothy was filling in for Richardson County Sheriff L.D. Camblin who was out of town at the time. He'd been called to the scene of Panel: 13 another accident located about 2 1/2 miles west of Falls Line: 2 City on Highway #8 and was directing traffic when struck. Deputy Timothy was hospitalized for his injuries until the time of his death. He was 67 years old and survived by his wife, Shari, and three children.

White County: Otoe County Agency: Nebraska City 24 End of Watch: Single Captain Dennis F. Lipari Agency: Douglas County SO 39 End of Watch: Omaha Paul A. Nields, Sr. was assigned as a plainclothes narcotics investigator when, at 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 1974, he heard an "officer needs help" call. Responding to the call for assistance, Nields and Sgt. Bernard Venditte went to 1818 North 25th Street. A barricaded man had wounded several officers and an attempt was made to force him out with tear Panel: 8 gas. Nields, attempting to help, rushed up to the front Line: 3 door. The suspect fired and struck him with a shot from a.12 gauge shotgun. He died instantly. s at the scene shot the suspect to death. Nields was 29 years old and survived by his wife, Kathleen, and two sons. York Police James M. Richardson II was shot and killed at about 10:35 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 1977, while responding to a disturbance call at 1520 Blackburn Ave. When Richardson arrived, he stepped out to assess the situation. He was shot near his parked Panel: 18 patrol car and staggered about 25 feet before falling on Line: 6 the lawn of the Arbor Drive Baptist Church. A 17 yearold suspect was apprehended about an hour later near the York Middle School. Richardson was 24 years old and single at the time of his death. Nebraska City Police Gary R. White was shot and killed at about 3:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 1977, at the rear of the police department in Nebraska City. White and Pete Rishel were attempting to contact a subject driving a pickup truck in the alley. The officers believed the driver of the truck was wanted in connection with a domestic assault that had Panel: 18 occurred earlier. As the officers approached the truck, Line: 3 the driver produced a shotgun and fired at both officers. White was stuck under his protective vest and collapsed. Rishel was wounded but was able to return fire. The suspect escaped but was arrested near York on I-80 at a rest area. White was 24 years old and single at the time of his death. White had been a police officer for nine days. Douglas County Captain Dennis F. Lipari was shot at about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 1977, while off-duty. Captain Lipari, his family, and two other deputies were eating at Club 89 in Southwest Omaha. The club was filled with some 200 people when a lone gunman entered and began firing into the crowd with a shotgun. Lipari was hit and died at about 7:59 p.m. at Bergan-Mercy Hospital. The gunman wounded 24 other club patrons. Captain Lipari was 39 years old and was survived by his wife, Ruth. Panel: 9 Line: 4 Deputy Charles E. Dobbertin Agency: Douglas County SO 41 End of Watch: Douglas County Deputy Sheriff Charles E. Dobbertin was shot at about 1:10 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 1977, and died from his wounds four days later at about 3:45 p.m. Deputy Dobbertin was off-duty and in downtown Omaha when he witnessed a thief taking items from a UPS vehicle. Dobbertin chased the suspect and was struck in the face with a radio antenna Panel: 10 as he rounded a corner. The 20 year-old suspect then Line: 5 obtained Dobbertin's service revolver and shot him before fleeing. The suspect was captured and charged with Dobbertin's death following an extensive investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and area law enforcement officers. Dobbertin was 41 years old and survived by his wife, Catherine, and three children.

25 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Chief Charles E. Henning County: Thayer County Agency: Hebron 72 End of Watch: Hebron Chief of Police Charles E. Henning died on April 20, 1978, from complications related to a gunshot wound and subsequent stroke he suffered 10 years prior, on Thursday, April 24, Chief Henning was shot by one of two Iowa youths who Thayer County Sheriff Jim Johnson was attempting to arrest in connection with a crime spree. The shooting occurred Panel: 3 near the intersection of Highway #81 and #136. Line: 5 Henning suffered a stroke as a result of the shooting, and was hospitalized for 10 years. Doctors attributed his death to the stroke caused by the shooting. Chief Henning was 72 years old and survived by his wife, Iona, and two sons. Trooper Michael D. Farber County: Hamilton County Agency: NE State Trooper 24 End of Watch: Edward J. Krejci County: Gosper County Agency: NE Conservation 40 End of Watch: Cause of Death Accidental Gun Shot 5 Nebraska State Trooper Michael D. Farber was struck by a motor vehicle and killed at about 4:50 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 1980, during an attempt to stop a suspect involved in a pursuit. Trooper Farber died about six miles east of Aurora on Interstate 80. A 15 year-old suspect had failed to pay for gas at the Pleasant Dale Interchange west of Lincoln, and another trooper stopped the suspect near the Utica exit. The individual tried to escape and the trooper gave chase. Farber took up a position along I-80 near the Hampton Panel: 14 Interchange and waited for the pursuit to approach his Line: 5 location. As the suspect approached Farber's position, he suddenly swerved into the eastbound lane still headed west. Farber had deployed his patrol car in the median and as the suspect approached, his car suddenly swerved off the interstate and into Farber and his unit. Farber was killed instantly. Trooper Farber was 24 years old and survived by his wife, Colleen. The couple was expecting their first child who, following his birth, was named after his father. Conservation Edward J. Krejci died from an accidental gunshot wound to the throat at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, Krejci had gone to the Elwood Reservoir after eating lunch with State Park Superintendent C. L. "Brownie" Wamsley. Krejci told Wamsley that he planned to do some target Panel: 4 practice after lunch and invited him to accompany him. Line: 7 Wamsley arrived a few minutes later and discovered Krejci face down in the snow at the bottom of a steep embankment. Krejci was later pronounced dead at the scene. He was 40 years old and survived by his wife, Rita, and five children. Deputy Michael T. McManigal County: Dakota County Agency: Dakota County SO 35 End of Watch: Deputy Sheriff Michael T. McManigal died from injuries suffered in a collision at about 2:15 p.m. on Friday, May 7, Deputy McManigal was responding to a report of an explosion when he collided Panel: 1 with a state patrol trooper responding to the same Line: 4 report. The collision occurred at the junction of U.S. #20 and West 29th Street. The other trooper was not seriously injured. Deputy McManigal was 35 years old and survived by his wife, Pamela, and three children.

Chab County: Richardson County Agency: NE State Trooper 45 End of Watch: Deputy Craig Dodge County: Lancaster County Agency: Lancaster Country SO 42 End of Watch: Sergeant Jerry L. Sukstorf County: Lincoln County Agency: North Platte 53 End of Watch: Cause of Death Heart Attack Nebraska State Trooper Robert J. Chab died at about 3:45 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 1984, about three miles east of Falls City on Highway #159 after being struck by a car driven by an elderly female. Trooper Chab and Trooper Don Shepard were assigned to conduct a traffic checkpoint at that location and had been Panel: 10 working traffic prior to the collision. Chab was killed Line: 2 when the woman failed to heed the posted warnings and struck another car prior to striking Trooper Chab. She later stated she didn't see a trooper or the warning signs. Trooper Chab was 45 years old and survived by his wife, Theresa, and two sons. Deputy Sheriff Craig D. Dodge was shot and killed at about 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 1987, while responding to a domestic violence call at an apartment building in Hickman. When he arrived, Dodge could hear commotion inside the apartment. Knowing a woman's life was in danger, and with backup still minutes away, Dodge advised his communications center that an assault was in progress and went into the apartment building to intervene. He attempted to talk to a male suspect through a slightly opened door, when the man produced a hidden handgun and shot Dodge in the face. Captured about 20 minutes after killing Dodge, the suspect, Terry Reynolds, was later convicted of the lawman's death. Deputy Dodge was 42 years old and survived by his wife, Barbara. North Platte Police Sergeant Jerry L. Sukstorf died of a heart attack at about 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 1987, only a short 40 minutes after a violent altercation with a suspected drunk driver. Sgt. Sukstorf stopped a subject identified as Joseph Burke at about 2:15 a.m. and attempted to arrest him for DWI. The suspect resisted, Sukstorf called for assistance, and Panel: 3 Line: 8 two additional officers responded. The officers struggled with and finally subdued Burke, after which Panel: 17 they took him to an area hospital. There, Burke Line: 3 continued his resistance and assaulted the officers again. Sukstorf was visibly ill after the altercations, but chose to stay on duty. After returning to patrol, Sukstorf suffered a heart attack while driving, and his cruiser struck a house. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. Sukstorf was 53 years old and survived by his wife, Nancy. Trooper Donald Matejka County: Madison County Agency: NE State Trooper 56 End of Watch: Cause of Death Heart Attack 4 Nebraska State Trooper Donald Matejka died on Wednesday, December 27, 1989, at about 11:20 p.m. Trooper Matejka and Trooper Bob Totten had responded to a domestic violence call at a mobile home park north of Norfolk just off Highway #81. Matejka and Totten contacted a subject later identified as Randy Rogers. While Totten spoke with Rogers, Matejka Panel: 16 spoke with the female subject involved. When Rogers Line: 1 attempted to leave he was stopped by Matejka. A struggle occurred and Matejka suffered a heart attack. Matejka was transported to Norfolk Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Trooper Matejka was 56 years old and survived by his wife, Carolyn, and four children.

27 Nebraska Fallen s - NUMERIC Sergeant Glenn H. Haas County: Dawson County Agency: Gothenburg 42 End of Watch: Jimmy B. Wilson 24 End of Watch: Engaged Gothenburg Police Sergeant Glenn H. Haas was shot in the front lobby of the police department at about 3:15 a.m. on Monday, July 2, A local 17 year-old male who had earlier been cited for criminal mischief, had come to the police department asking to speak to an officer. Sgt. Haas, who was present but off-duty and in plainclothes, responded to the request and was shot as he stepped out of the office entrance and into the lobby. He was struck once with a round fired from a rifle the suspect had hidden around a corner. Sgt. Haas was taken to the Gothenburg Hospital and later life-flighted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, where he passed away. The suspect was later arrested and convicted, and is serving a life sentence. Sergeant Haas was 42 years old and survived by his wife, Janet, and two children. Janet's brother will also be listed in the Memorial. He was Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Wolf of Frontier County, who died of a heart attack suffered while on duty in Panel: 10 Line: 7 Omaha Jimmy B. Wilson, Jr. died at about 5:00 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 1995, from several gunshot wounds. Wilson was shot at about 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 20, 1995, while initiating a traffic stop on a vehicle near 40th and Blondo. A suspect in the stopped vehicle stepped out and opened Panel: 7 fire on Wilson while he was still seated in his Line: 6 patrol car. Wilson was rushed to the hospital where he was listed in grave condition until he passed away the following morning. Wilson was 24 years old and engaged to be married at the time of his death. Special Agent Kevin J. Kramer Agency: FBI 34 End of Watch: Federal Bureau of Investigations Special Agent Kevin J. Kramer was killed at about 7:20 a.m. on April 14, 1996, in a one-vehicle accident near Jordan, Montana. Agent Kramer was killed while on special assignment Panel: 9 during the "Freeman Standoff." Kramer was alone in Line: 7 the vehicle when he lost control on a county road. He was ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries. FBI Agent Kremer was 34 years old and survived by his wife, Heidi. Joel R. Conklin County: Adams County Agency: Hastings 37 End of Watch: Hastings Joel R. Conklin was shot and killed at about 10:05 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, 1993, while responding to a report of a disturbance at a residence. Conklin died after being shot by a 35 year-old male subject at the scene of the call. The suspect Panel: 2 escaped but later committed suicide when confronted Line: 2 by law enforcement officers searching for him. Conklin was 37 years of age and is survived by his wife, Debra, and daughter, Tracy. Joel Conklin Memorial Site: Maintained by daughter Tracy Deputy Kenneth J. Wolf County: Frontier County Agency: Frontier County SO 51 End of Watch: Cause of Death Heart Attack 3 Deputy Sheriff Kenneth J. Wolf died on April 29, 1997, as a result of a heart attack suffered while on duty. Deputy Wolf had responded to a report of an individual injured while working on a power pole. He responded and carried the injured subject from the scene to the roadway. Afterward, Wolf suffered chest Panel: 9 pains and died from a sudden heart attack. Deputy Wolf died on his 51st birthday. His wife, Jeanette, Line: 5 along with his two daughters and one son, survived him. Deputy Wolf's brother-in-law, Gothenburg Police Seargant Glenn Haas, will also be listed on the Memorial. In 1990 Seargent Haas was shot in the station lobby and later died in a Kearney hospital.

Holloway County: Sheridan County Agency: Gordon 36 End of Watch: Nebraska State Trooper Mark P. Wagner died at about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, 1999, as a result of an accidental gunshot wound received in a tragic training exercise. Wagner and several other troopers were Panel: 18 participating in handgun retention training at Troop Line: 2 "D" Headquarters in North Platte when the accidental shooting occurred. Trooper Wagner was 37 years old and survived by his wife, Denise, and three children. Gordon Gregory A. Holloway was killed instantly at about 1:25 a.m. on Sunday, November 28, 1999, when his patrol car was struck nearly head-on with a pickup truck. Holloway was responding to a report of an accident east of Gordon when the collision occurred. The driver of the pickup truck was westbound and making a left turn into a parking lot when the two vehicles collided. Holloway was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was later arrested and charged in connection with Holloway's death. Holloway was 36 years old and survived by his wife and four children. Panel: 1 Line: 7 Reserve Eric L. Ottis Agency: Bennington End of Watch: Single Bennington Reserve Eric L. Ottis was killed on February 10, 2002, near the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center outside of Grant Island. Ottis' vehicle was struck by another vehicle as he was leaving the training center. A contributing factor to the accident was a missing stop sign, knocked down the previous day, that had not yet been replaced. Panel: 14 Line: 3 Sergeant Jason 'Tye' Pratt 30 End of Watch: Omaha Police Sergeant Jason "Tye" Pratt died on September 19, 2003, after being shot on September 11, He was shot in the head after a suspect ran from a traffic stop. Sgt. Pratt's partner returned fire, killing the suspect. Sergeant Pratt, at age 30, he was a sevenyear veteran of the Omaha Police Department. Pratt left Panel: 1 Line: 8 behind a wife, Stacy, and two daughters. He was promoted to Sergeant during his time in the hospital prior to his death. Sergeant Ron Phillips County: Polk County Agency: Polk County SO 56 End of Watch: Cause of Death Heart Attack 2 Sergeant Ron Phillips, a Polk County Deputy Sheriff, died on Monday, January 26, 2004, from a heart attack suffered after attempting to dig out his patrol car during a snow storm. Having made his "on duty" call, Sergeant Phillips became stuck in the snow and attempted to free the vehicle himself. He eventually Panel: 2 called a tow truck, whose driver discovered Phillips slumped over in the front seat. Emergency personnel Line: 8 were immediately dispatched, however he was later pronounced dead at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Health Center in Osceola. Sergeant Phillips was 56 years old and is survived by his wife, Jennifer and his two sons, Shannon and Matthew.

Ranger Weir was on official travel status while relocating from her permanent position at Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a field training assignment at Yosemite National Park in California.
