2 WELCOME Welcome to Philadelphia The City of Brotherly Love. Although not always top of mind when it comes to meetings and conventions, this large East Coast sity offers great attractions. Run like Rocky through the Italian Market. Head back in time at Independence Hall. Devour one of Philadelphia s famous cheesesteaks wit or witout! It s all here. I ve been a member of the On Location family since 2002 and since day one, I ve managed and worked projects from start to finish. As the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Regional Manager, I m responsible for overseeing all aspects of event implementation in New York City, Philadelphia and Atlantic City. This includes labor scheduling, equipment deliveries, freight coordination and general project preparation. I am also a key liaison for clients working closely with On Location Account Executives. Yet, the exhibit floor is in my blood. I ve been in the exhibit and event business since 1980, starting with another nationwide trade show labor provider and eventually moving into management positions. Raised in the Greater Philadelphia area, I enjoy being with my family and longtime friends when in town. Like most I love all Philadelphia has to offer from its history to food. Of all the convention cities I ve visited, none of them offer the choices you ll find at the Reading Terminal with some of the best foods from around the world. In addition, you can t leave without hitting South Street for a cheesesteak. This City Guide is filled with useful and fun information, yet questions may ultimately arise. I am here when they do. 3 CITY OVERVIEW For those who may not know, the name Philadelphia has Greek roots. Named by founder William Penn more than 300 years ago, The City of Brotherly Love stems from philos ( love or friendship ) and adelphos ( brother ). Over the years, Philadelphia has grown to be the largest city in Pennsylvania the country s 5th largest in population - and the Delaware Valley hub economically and culturally. Philadelphia is most notable for its history and its key role in the American Revolution. The meeting place of our founding fathers and acting capital at the time, it was where both the Declaration of Independence (1776) and Constitution (1787) were signed at Independence Hall just one of more than 60 National Historic Landmarks in the city, including the Liberty Bell and Eastern State Penitentiary. But Philadelphia is not only linked to days gone by. The City is a hotspot for arts, culture and science. While the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a major city attraction, there is also the Barnes Foundation, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Rodin Museum said to hold the largest collection of Rodin s work outside France. Philadelphia is well-known public art includes more murals than any other city in the U.S. and the first Friday every month Old City smaller galleries take center stage. In addition, Philadelphia is home to Walnut Street Theatre, the oldest continuously operating theatre in the country. Its Avenue of the Arts is anchored by the Kimmel Center and bustles with restaurants and nightlife. The city also boasts major science museums including the Franklin Institute and the Academy of Natural Sciences. Philadelphia sits amid the Northeast corridor with seasonal climate changes. Summers tend to be hot, humid and muggy, with an average temperature of 76 degrees. Fall and spring are generally milder and temperatures drop in winter to an average of 39 degrees. 4 CITY WORKING RULES & RESOURCES General Working Rules Questions & Answers (information based on PA Convention Center guidelines) Labor Can an EAC or Exhibitor work in the city or supervise only? Supervise only. Can the Exhibitor install & dismantle their display and use tools to do so? Only a company employee (Exhibitor) can install & dismantle if exhibit is 300 sq. ft. (10 x 30 ) or less in size. However, no power tools are allowed. To use tools for set up, the Exhibitor must work with the General Contractor or hire an Exhibitor Appointed Contractor (EAC). Can an EAC set-up steel deck structures? Yes, if the structure is pre-approved by building engineering. Copies of such approval are required on-site during installation. Electrical Where is the source of electrical - floor or overhead? Floor ports are used as primary tie-in. Can an Exhibitor or EAC run electrical cords beneath carpet? No. Only house electricians may make tie-in to floor ports and they must provide all such cords used under carpet. Can an Exhibitor or EAC run electrical cords above carpet? Yes, 14ga or lower cords may be rented by the EAC or provided by the Exhibitor. Can the Exhibitor or EAC plug in lights and/or other devices into booth electrical outlets? An Exhibitor may do so but not an EAC. The exception is for any rental flat screens. Such devices must be installed by stagehands and an electrician must handle any direct wiring. Can the Exhibitor or EAC place lights and/or insert duratrans in light boxes? An Exhibitor may do both but an EAC cannot do either. Yes, but certain restrictions may apply. Genie Lifts Can a Genie Lift but used? Yes. Such lifts may be rented from EACs however only a rigger may operate it. Material Handing Can Exhibitor carry in items by themselves? Yes, but they must either hand carry or use a 2-wheeled personal cart only. Otherwise, the Exhibitor must hire the GC to handle. Other Can the Exhibitor or EAC vacuum the booth? Exhibitors can vacuum the carpet with their own supplied vacuum or order booth cleaning services through the show contractor. EACs are not allowed to vacuum. Can food and/or beverage be brought into the facility? During the show, no. Food and/or beverage must be purchased through the show caterer. During move-in, Exhibitors may do so with limitation. Is there access to local specialty vendors? While there is access to such vendors (i.e. graphics specialists, lighting suppliers, etc.), it is generally limited to Monday through Friday during normal business hours, so please plan accordingly.
