1 New Zealand by Sea Auckland to Milford Sound aboard Caledonian Sky January 4 17, 2018 With Richard Thomas, George Martin Lane Professor of the Classics

2 New Zealand by Sea aboard Caledonian Sky January 4 17, 2017 (13 nights/14 days) Explore New Zealand s many treasures: spectacular Milford Sound (cover); unique wildlife, including raucous royal albatrosses (above); the magnificent, alpine-like Remarkables Mountains skirting Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu (back cover); and fascinating Maori culture. With its tidy English gardens and untamed wilderness, white-suited lawn bowlers and tattooed Maori elders, austere glacial fiords and boiling volcanic mud pots, New Zealand is a spectacular country of striking contrasts. Isolated from other land masses by the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean, it is a world unto itself. Explore this remarkable country, from Auckland on the North Island to worldfamous Milford Sound on the South Island, aboard the Caledonian Sky, ideally suited for cruising along craggy coastlines and into remote Fiordland. Learn about Maori culture in Rotorua and at the stunning Te Papa Tongarewa Museum. Visit the Canterbury Museum s Hall of Antarctic Discovery in Christchurch and the Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head. Listen for the strange dingdong call of the bellbird on Stewart Island, and marvel at the sheer granite walls and tumbling waterfalls of Doubtful and Milford Sounds in Fiordland. Throughout this adventure enjoy the expertise and insights of Professor Richard Thomas, who grew up in New Zealand. Additional study leaders, local naturalists, and cultural guides will further enrich your experience. Optional post-tour excursions in Queenstown and Sydney, Australia, are also available. To book a trip call or visit alumni.harvard.edu/travel

3 Harvard Study Leader Richard F. Thomas is the George Martin Lane Professor of the Classics at Harvard University. Born in London, Thomas was brought up in New Zealand and educated at the University of Auckland (BA 72; MA 73) and at the University of Michigan (PhD 77). His teaching and research interests include literary history, metrics and prose stylistics, genre studies, translation theory and practice, and the reception of Classical literature and culture, particularly with respect to Virgil. On this program his lectures may touch upon the early settlers of New Zealand, poets and poetry of New Zealand, Maori mythologies and classical counterpoints, Edmund Hillary and the New Zealand character, the flora and fauna of New Zealand, and perhaps even his childhood memories of sailing the New Zealand seas in an age of innocence. Additional Lecturers Gordon Turnbull is the general editor of the Yale Boswell Editions. Born in Sydney, he graduated with first-class honors from the Australian National University in Canberra, taught at the University of Newcastle (New South Wales), then joined Yale as a Fulbright scholar to pursue his doctorate in English literature. He taught for seven years in Yale s Department of English and in 1997 assumed the directorship of the Boswell project, one of Yale s greatest scholarly enterprises. Paul Danos served as Dean of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth University from 1995 until 2015, the longest serving dean of any prestigious business school in the world. Educated at the University of New Orleans and the University of Texas, he left his imprint on every aspect of Tuck, including a world-class faculty and campus, a top business school ranking, and world-leading placement rates for Tuck graduates. David Huebner is the former U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, a position he held under the Obama administration from December 2009 to January His tenure was honored for innovative statecraft, significant improvement in bilateral relations, social media communication, and an emphasis on students and future leaders. A 1982 summa cum laude graduate from Princeton, he also earned a JD from Yale Law School in He is currently an independent international arbitrator based in Los Angeles. The orange color at the rim of Champagne Pool, a prominent geothermal feature within the Wai-O-Tapu thermal area of New Zealand s North Island, is caused by deposits of arsenic and antimony sulfides.
