1 TOURISM 2015 NEWSLETTER THE HEAT IS ON IN BUFFALO CITY THIS SUMMER! December has arrived and Buffalo City is rolling out a sizzling line-up of events to ensure all our visitors and home-grown tourists enjoy a magical holiday season. Our year-end festivities kicked off with two spectacular marque events which drew thousands of local and regional revellers - the Eastern Cape very own racing and fashion extravaganza, Berlin November, and the always-popular Cruel Summer Picnic. If attendance and enthusiasm for these two events is anything to go by, Buffalo City should brace itself for one of the best seasons ever! Be sure to mark your calendar with these fantastic Buffalo City events scheduled for the next few weeks: METRO FM HEATWAVE Buffalo Park, East London The highly anticipated Metro FM heat wave comes to Buffalo City to redefine fun in the sun. Join your hosts Perl Thusi and Amaza on the Buffalo Park B Field for an outdoor celebration of the hottest DJs, including Big Nuz, Thebe, Spechtacula and Naves, Shimza and Lulo Café. 05 IKASI EXPERIENCE Winter Rose Stadium Mdantsane Ikasi Experience is a township based market that celebrates the local culture and entrepreneurial spirit of South Africans. Ikasi Experience provides a platform for trade and economic growth in a safe, entertaining and engaging environment. Founded by GoodHope FM and club DJ, DJ Loyd and Vincent Manzini, Ikasi Experience aims to give vendors an opportunity to show off their wares while celebrating a culture of celebrating township life. Live performance by KO, supported by Ms Cosmo (5FM), DJ Loyd and Akhona Xlnt. SUNDAY 06 BUFFALO CITY SUMMER CARNIVAL KWT, Mdantsane, East London Buffalo City s biggest, brightest and most eagerly anticipated community event is back, to be staged over six days in three separate venues. Soak up the great carnival atmosphere while doing some unique Christmas shopping and supporting local arts and crafts. KWT EAST LONDON WHAT THE EFF?, East London Irrepressible comedian Nik Rabinowitz is back with a deliciously politically incorrect stand-up show, What the EFF? Whether it`s hippies rubbing their chords together to produce solar energy, militants marching into parliament in Pep Store overalls and Italian shoes, or taxi drivers who manage to simultaneously cut you off and flip you the bird while paging through the newspaper and counting their money at some point in every day, you will say: What the EFF?. TUESDAY 15

2 JOHNNY CLEGG Old Selbornian Club Johnny Clegg, one of South Africa`s most prolific musicians, returns to East London for a one-off performance. This very very intimate show will include storytelling by Johnny Clegg, where he talks about the events in his life and political history of South Africa and the world at that time that motivated him to write that song. It is a personal journey, which is uplifting, moving and also humorous at times. WEDNESDAY 16 BILLY KENNY Buccaneers UK producer, DJ and engineer Billy Kenny is currently on an extended African tour, and will be performing in Buccaneers in East London on 16 December. A master of the lower, more aggressive frequencies in the amalgamation between UK Garage, House and Techno music, Kenny is known for his endless edits, live sampling, looping and unexpected choices of weaponry in producing always-unique sets. WEDNESDAY 16 CENTRESTAGE TRIBUTE TO NEIL DIAMOND Featuring the velvet-voiced Andre Strydom as the Jazz Singer, the Centrestage All-Star Band will again combine the worlds of rock and Las Vegas showpiece, to provide a night steeped in sentimentality as the familiar Neil Diamond hits are given the Centrestage treatment. FRIDAY 18 CHRISTMAS FAIR Gonubie Sportsfield All the trappings of a summer fair, including a beer tent, live entertainment, food court, arts and craft stalls, mechanical bull and pony rides, jumping castles and Christmas photos with Santa. A great day out for the whole family. SUNDAY CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT East London Zoo Enjoy some of the most popular and best-loved Christmas Carols in a unique outdoor setting, from 6.30pm to 8pm. Tickets available from the Zoo kiosk. 19 BUYEL EKHAYA PAN AFRICAN MUSIC FESTIVAL Buffalo Park, East London The 7th Annual Buyel Ekhaya Pan African Music Festival is back, with some of the biggest name in the South African music industry, including Zahara, Caiphus Semenya, Nathi Mankayi, Thandiswa Mazwai, Zonke Dikana, Cassper Nyovest, Mi Casa and Rikhado Makhado aka Riky Rick. Bring your picnic chair, umbrella and cooler box for the ultimate Buffalo City outdoor party. SUNDAY 20 THE LONDON ROOTS PARTY Police Park, East London Set to become an annual show piece for East London, The London Roots Party is a music festival featuring some of the country`s top artists and hosted by SA Idols judge Somizi Mhlongo. 26 BOBBY VAN JAARSVELD Popular Afrikaans singer Bobby van Jaarsveld and his live band celebrate 10 years in the music industry. Expect all his biggest hits. 26 COUNTDOWN MUSIC FESTIVAL Buffalo Park The second annual Countdown Festival starts at 2pm, and will take revellers right into the new year with an exciting line-up of live music. 3 SUPPORT OUR LOCAL AMENITIES Amid all the festivities on offer this holiday season, do support our local amenities, which offer great family entertainment all year round. EAST LONDON ZOO BE SAFE Wherever the Sizzin Summer in the City takes you this festive season, please remember to enjoy our festivities safely and responsibly. The South African Police Service is implementing a zero-tolerance drunk driving policy, and all public events will be closely monitored. The East London Zoo, while small compared to other major cities, is still the only place in our region where you can go eyeball-to-eyeball with almost 100 different mammal, primate, reptile and bird species, including the awesome big cats, the endangered African wild dog and the equally rare sungazer lizard, which has been put on the Red List of Threatened Species. EAST LONDON AQUARIUM The East London Aquarium continues to delight with its unique and eclectic collections and fish tank displays, seal shows and penguin colony. Come face to face with a fiery Amazonian Red Piranha, delight in the graceful antics of Cape fur seals or get up close and personal with a colony of plucky African Penguins and a much-loved pelican. Boasting an impressive collection of marine life and a few truly unique displays, the East London Aquarium is one of East London favourite amenities and a definite must-see for visitors to our city. Don t forget to take a stroll out over the Indian Ocean on our whale watching deck. EAST LONDON MUSEUM The East London Museum curates three of the international science community s most prized artefacts: the prehistoric coelacanth, a year old humanoid skulls and the world s oldest human trace fossil footprints, dating back an incredible years. Be sure to also visit the Bhisho massacre and Egerton memorials, The Wall of Fame in Dimbaza and the Mxenge family graves to renew your appreciation for East London s unique role in the liberation struggle.
