3 Dear Students, Your semester here at Södertörn University will soon begin so we would like to provide you with some useful information about your arrival. We re looking forward to seeing you all! International Division Södertörn University 3

4 Arriving in Stockholm An organisation made up of the Universities of Greater Stockholm (STAF) will be available at the Arlanda and Skavsta airports to help you find your way to the University and answer any questions you have. For the spring semester, they will be available on Saturday 16 th and Sunday 17 th January between 8am and 9pm at Arlanda airport. Just look for the help desks at Terminals 2 and 5 in the arrivals hall. At Skavsta airport, they will be available between 11am and 5pm on Saturday 16 th and Sunday 17 th January. New for this year is a transfer bus from Arlanda airport to the central station in Stockholm FREE of charge for all students! Buses leave on the hour every hour between 9am and 9pm. Just ask at the help desks in terminals 2 and 5. You can also contact your mentor, if you have been given one, to set up a time and place to meet. He or she will then help you find your way to campus and your new accommodation. (Contact ESN for more details.) Please ensure that you attend the compulsory Orientation Week which starts Monday 18 th January. The full orientation program will be published on the University s website. The programme during Orientation week is compulsory for all exchange students. Södertörn University Campus Arrival dates for students with accommodation arranged by Södertörn University The official arrival date for students with arranged accommodation is Sunday 17 th January. 4

5 When you arrive at Södertörn University, you should make your way to Kompassen (see campus map at the end of this letter). Our office hours are 9:30am to 4pm. If you arrive during these hours you will be given the key to your room. However, if you arrive later in the evening you will have to arrange your own accommodation for the first night. If you realise that you will be delayed and cannot make your way to campus before Kompassen closes, contact us immediately by phone (+46) or by Those of you arriving after the 17 th January need to make an appointment to collect your keys with the Housing manager at the above . Kompassen In Kompassen you will receive your tenancy agreement, keys and an information pack, including how to get to your accommodation. It is important to know that you will not have access to your room until you have signed the contract of tenancy, which must be done in person in order to receive your keys. You cannot send a mentor, friend or supervisor to collect the keys in advance. Rent There are a limited number of ways to pay your rent and other bills, but no matter what method of payment you choose to use, you must always use the reference number stated on the invoice sent to you. Your first invoice (bill) will either be given to you on the day you arrive with your tenancy agreement, or you will receive it by shortly after your arrival. All following invoices will be sent to you by post (for those of you living in Björnkullaringen 28), or via . You will not be able to pay the rent prior to your arrival. All methods of payment require an administration fee, but the amount varies depending on the method. Bringing some cash for the first days may be a good idea. It is essential that you bring your passport as it is the only form of identification accepted for banking and other transactions. You can make the payment of your rent by opening a Swedish bank account, paying by credit card or cash at any shop offering invoice payment services. Alternatively, you could send money from your bank account in your home country, but you must remember to include the fee that your bank charges. Ask your local bank about procedures and fees. 5

6 Buy a Travel card for the Stockholm Local Transport System (SL) The local traffic system in the Stockholm region is very extensive and easy to use. There are many types of tickets and travel cards. When you first arrive we recommend you to buy a 1 week travel card (300SEK) which should see you through to when you are able to buy a monthly card at a discounted price. As you will be using local transport to get to and from your residence, it s a good idea to buy a SL travel card as soon as possible. Once you are registered as a student at Södertörn University, you will be able to buy SL travel cards with a student discount (30 days: 560 SEK, 90 days: 1540 SEK). The current price for the normal fare is 790 SEK for 30 days and 2300 SEK for 90 days so it s definitely worth it! You are now able to buy travel cards directly at Arlanda airport. At the Central station you will find the SL-center on the lower level of the main hall at Stockholm Central Station. The 30-day travel card can also be bought in most Pressbyrån shops near every commuter- or subway station. All types of tickets are available for purchase at the stations. Purchasing single tickets is much more expensive in the long run, it costs from 37,50 SEK to 54 SEK to travel from Stockholm Central Station to Flemingsberg station, oneway, depending on if you choose a zone ticket or a prepaid credit ticket. More information: Important: You cannot purchase tickets on buses, you must have a SL travel card or a prepaid coupon before entering the bus. How to get to Stockholm Central Station From Stockholm Arlanda airport (north of Stockholm): N.B If arriving at Arlanda on either Saturday 16 th or Sunday 17 th January you can take advantage of the free bus transfer to the Central station in Stockholm. 1. Coach: Take the airport coach/bus, marked Flygbussarna, departing from outside the arrival hall, to Stockholm City and Cityterminalen. The journey takes about 45 minutes and costs 89 SEK if you are under 26 years of age. The 6

7 normal fare is 99 SEK. When you arrive at Cityterminalen, follow the signs to Central Station. Arlanda Express Train: When you are in the arrival hall follow the signs to Arlanda Express. The train departs every 15 minutes and takes you to Stockholm Central Station in 20 minutes. The fare is 140 SEK for students with an ISIC card or 150 SEK if you are under the age of 26 whilst the normal adult fare is 280 SEK Commuter train: You can take the pendeltåg (commuter train) from Arlanda airport to Flemingsberg where the University is located although you may need to change at Stockholm Central station. Trains leave every 30 minutes from Sky City (it is located between Terminals 4 and 5). If you buy a 1 week pass you will have to pay a surcharge (75 SEK) due to the airport being outside of the Stockholm area. 4. Local Bus: The 583 bus from bus stop 16 at terminals 2, 3 and 5. From Stockholm Skavsta Airport (south of Stockholm): Take the airport bus leaving for Stockholm City terminalen. The ticket price is 119 SEK if you are under the age of 26. Normal adult fare is 139 SEK. The journey takes 80 minutes. When you arrive at Cityterminalen, follow the signs to Central Station. More information: (you can also buy the bus ticket via website in advance with a discount) From Bromma Airport: Take the airport bus to Stockholm City and Cityterminalen. The journey takes about 20 minutes and the ticket is 59 SEK if you are under the age of 26, whilst the adult fare is 75 SEK. The journey takes about 75 minutes. If you are under 26, the ticket is 119 SEK whilst the adult fare is 139 SEK. More information: (you can also buy the bus ticket via website in advance with a discount) If you arrive by boat to the port in Nynäshamn: 1. Find your way to the train station in Nynäshamn (only a 5 minute walk). 7

8 2. Take the pendeltåg (local commuter train) towards Stockholm. Notice that you have to get a train ticket before entering the train. 3. Exit at station: Stockholm C (Central station). Moas Båge (Moa Building/Arch) How to get from Stockholm Central Station to Södertörn University From Stockholm Central Station, go to track 13/14 where you take the pendeltåg (local commuter train) towards Södertälje or Tumba. Get off at Flemingsberg station (about 20 minutes). Follow the signs Södertörns högskola to our campus. (When you arrive with the commuter train from Stockholm Central Station you take the escalator on the left hand side of the platform, that is; you walk in the same direction as the train s direction of travel. After taking the first escalator, leave the the station building, take a right on the bridge, and take the next escalator.) Södertörn University is the first building you will see and you will find Kompassen to the right. When arriving from the commuter train escalators, you will arrive on the same level as the fifth floor, so you won t have to take any stairs to get to Kompassen. 8

9 Youth hostels in Stockholm city Single accommodation at youth hostels in the centre of Stockholm ranges from 210 SEK to >700 SEK during the peak season. Make sure in advance that there are rooms available and, if needed for that certain hostel, that you have your own sheets etc. with you during your stay. 10 Södertörn University CAMPUS MAP The main building on Flemingsberg Campus is called Moas Båge (Moa Building/Arch), but there are other buildings on the campus, including Biblioteket (library), Primus and the F building.
