Secure department permission to register for flight courses Schedule and Attend an Orientation Program: FastTrack (Freshman Students) -OR- Transfer in a Day (Transfer Students) Register for Classes: See suggested plan - To avoid delayed funding: Register early! The medical exam and drug test MUST be completed before you will be permitted to register for flight courses. Meet with an Academic Counselor: If you have did not attend FastTrack or Transfer in a Day - Meet with College of Technology Adviser ( ). 2 Medical Certificate Privileges First Class Medical: Exercising the pilot-in-command privileges of an airline transport pilot certificate; exercising the second-incommand privileges of an airline transport pilot certificate; When serving as a required pilot flight crew member. Second Class Medical: Second-in-command privileges of an airline transport pilot certificate; exercising privileges of a commercial pilot certificate. Third Class Medical: Exercising the privileges of a private pilot certificate; exercising the privileges of a private pilot certificate; exercising the privileges of a student pilot certificate; exercising the privileges of a flight instructor certificate and acting as the pilot in command; taking a practical test in an aircraft for a recreational pilot, private pilot, commercial pilot, or airline transport pilot certificate, or for a flight instructor certificate. We have provided you with a list of AMEs in the surrounding area. You may also elect to use an AME of your own choosing. Keep in mind, not all AMEs perform Class I Medicals. 5 Applying for Financial Aid, Grants and Scholarships Financial aid is available for Eastern Michigan University students enrolled at least half time. Financial aid includes, loans, scholarships, and grants. Eastern Michigan University and Eagle Flight Centre are approved by the Federal Government's Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program, which allows students who qualify to use financial assistance for flight training. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required for federal financial aid programs which include: Pell Grant, SEOG, Direct Subsidized Loan, Direct Unsubsidized Loan, and College Work Study. Once EMU receives your FAFSA application from the government, you will be sent an Award Notification. University Scholarships are awarded by Admissions when a student is admitted. If you do not receive a scholarship your first year at EMU, you may apply through the University Scholarship Application that is available each December. Outside scholarships opportunities are available. Aviation students will have EMU charges that will be billed by EMU and flight fees charged by the Eagle Flight Centre. Students are responsible for paying the Eagle Flight Centre directly. Students may pay the Eagle Flight Centre with their own funds or elect to borrow through either the PLUS or Private Loan program to cover the Eagle Flight Centre fees. Standard financial aid packages are not enough to cover flight fees. For students who would like to borrow additional funds for the flight program the following options are available: Scholarships In addition to collegiate scholarships there are aviation-related scholarships offered by a variety of organizations. For more information, visit: emich.edu/aviation PLUS Loan The PLUS loan is a loan for parents of undergraduate students. The parent may borrow up to the students cost of attendance minus any other aid the student is receiving. For flight students, you must contact the Office of Financial Aid, so that your cost of attendance can be adjusted for flight classes at Eagle Flight Centre. Parents may apply for the PLUS at studentloans.gov Private Loans In the event that you have exhausted your federal aid, private loans are available. Private Loans are credit-based student loans offered by a number of educational loan companies. For more information on private loans you may visit: emich.edu/finaid/loans Full time is 12 Credit hours or more; Part time is 6 Credit hours. All United States residents automatically receive resident tuition. Please make all payments with check, debit or credit card, we cannot accept cash. SALE AND PURCHASE OF FLIGHT TRAINING PROGRAM: Trumbull Aviation, LLC (d/b/a and hereinafter Eagle Flight Centre ) agrees to sell and the student agrees to purchase the Flight Training Program (the Program ) described herein, subject to the terms and conditions set forth on the front (page 1) and the back (page 2) of this Agreement (the Flight Training Agreement ). Eagle Flight Centre will provide the program services and materials to the student following the effective date of this agreement at the address stated herein at times to be mutually agreed upon at later dates by the Student and Eagle Flight Centre. Eagle Flight Centre may substitute instructors or modify training materials at its discretion. CONDITIONS FOR THIS AGREEMENT TO BECOME EFFECTIVE: Certain portions of this agreement may be completed for discussions and information purposes prior to its effective date. This agreement shall not be effective until (a) it had been executed by both the student and an authorized representative of Eagle Flight Centre and (b) the payment obligations of the student have been discharged in a manner satisfactory to Eagle Flight Centre. FLIGHT ACCOUNT POLICY: In order to minimize costly disruptions to your flight schedule, all students will require $500 in their account before being dispatched an aircraft. If your account is below $500 you will be placed on ground status until additional funds are added. If your account is below $100 you will be placed on inactive status and ineligible for ground or flight training. Dispatch will alert you when you fall below $1,000 and can provide your balance on request. If your balance falls below $1,000 please make appropriate arrangements to prevent any disruptions in your flight training. Exemptions will be reviewed by the Supervisor of Flight on a case by case basis. Students in the EMU Flight Technology Program are required to submit the course fee prior to starting training unless a separate financial agreement between the account holder and Eagle Flight Centre has been made. CREDIT POLICY: Eagle Flight Centre does not offer credit or payment plans to its students. PERIODIC RECORDING OF AIRCRAFT RENTAL AND INSTRUCTION HOURS: At the completion of each training session or otherwise on a similar periodic basis, the Eagle Flight Centre may prepare a Training Record Invoice ( TRs ) which report the exact number of hours of aircraft rental, instructor time and other services and/or supplies provided by Eagle Flight Centre to student under this agreement. The student acknowledges that the TRs are used to define and calculate at any point in time, including but not limited to early termination of the Program, the amount delivered and undelivered flight training services under this program. The student agrees to carefully review each record in a timely manner following receipt of the services or materials. The student warrants the accuracy of all TRs signed by the student and agrees not to sign any TRs which are not fully completed or which covers services that have not been fully and satisfactorily provided or delivered to the student. DRUG TEST NOTIFICATION TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS: As required by Eastern Michigan University and Eagle Flight Centre s policy and in accordance with applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and/or Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, all prospective students will be urine tested for various drugs, including, but not limited to, the five (5) specific classes of drugs listed below. There is a fee for this test. Enrollment and continued training is contingent upon verified negative test results within the guidelines set for each substance by the Federal government. MARIJUANA AMPHETAMINES COCAINE PHENCYCLIDINE (PCP) OPIATES All such students are subject to drug and alcohol testing and regulations under Eastern Michigan University and Eagle Flight Centre s Alcohol/Drug Testing Policy, which calls for random, post-accident, post-incident, follow up and/or periodic drug testing, whether or not Eagle Flight Centre has reasonable suspicion for such testing. RATES HOURS OF AIRCRAFT RENTAL / INSTRUCTION: The actual numbers of hours of aircraft rental, flight instruction and review/briefings may differ from the number of estimated hours shown in the training agreement. Estimated hours do not guarantee a certificate or rating. Total training cost will vary for each student. The program is based on the minimum requirements established by the FAA, for Part 61. No refunds are made once class has begun. Cancellations occurring after 3 days of receipt of payment and prior to class starting will be subject to a cancellation fee of $ No refunds are provided for books, charts, headsets or other similar items. TERMINATION OF THIS AGREEMENT BY STUDENT: The student may terminate this program at any time. Upon any such early termination by the student, Eagle Flight Centre shall, within 30 days of such termination, refund to the student one hundred percent (100%) of all unused/undelivered aircraft rental and/or instructor fees. All books, supplies, charts, headsets, etc., delivered to the student are not returnable and are not refundable to the student. If the agreement has been financed, any credit due the student will be paid to the finance company to be applied to the student s account. Any refund due the student will be made in accordance with the terms set by the finance company. TERMINATION OF THIS AGREEMENT BY EAGLE FLIGHT CENTRE: Eagle Flight Centre may terminate this program if: (a) in the opinion of Eagle Flight Centre it would be unsafe to continue the program or recommend student for the anticipated certificate or rating; (b) in the opinion of Eagle Flight Centre, it is unlikely the student will receive the recommendation for the anticipated certificate or rating in a reasonable time or at a reasonable cost; or (c) it becomes unreasonable for Eagle Flight Centre to provide the promised services or materials. Upon any such early termination by Eagle Flight Centre, Eagle Flight Centre shall, within 30 days of such termination, refund to student one hundred percent (100%) of all unused/undelivered aircraft rental and/or instructor fees. All books, supplies, charts, headsets, etc., delivered to the student are not returnable and are not refundable to the student. If the agreement has been financed, any credit due the student will be paid to the finance company to be applied to the student s account. Any refund due the student will be made in accordance with the terms set by the finance company. ASSIGNMENT: This agreement may be assigned by Eagle Flight Centre. 11 Insurance Information for Collegiate Students Last Name First Name Middle Name E-ID Student Number Aviation Liability and Hull Coverages are carried by Eagle Flight Centre. The carrier providing this insurance is Old Republic Aerospace, Inc. The liability and hull coverage carried are for the benefit of Eagle Flight Centre, their employees, and student and renter pilots. These coverages are afforded for an occurrence arising out of the operation of the insured aircraft. The hull coverages are subject to a $500 deductible if the aircraft is not in motion, and $1,000 if the aircraft is in motion. The Cessna 172-RG is a $2,500 deductible in motion. The hull coverage afforded in the policy have subrogation rights within the policy provisions that allow the insurance company to seek legal redress against those individuals found guilty of gross negligence regarding hull coverage. Liability coverage is in the amount of $400,000 per occurrence, with a limit of $100,000 per seat. The legal liability afforded by the policy may or may not be adequate according to the financial circumstances of the individual renter or student pilot. Therefore, it is recommended that each student or renter pilot check with his/her insurance agent or broker, attorney, or financial adviser to determine if additional liability should be purchased from other sources. 16 Admission to the Aviation Flight Technology Program (Second Admission Policy) Requirements for Admission Upon acceptance into EMU, students are coded as Aviation Flight - Intent. To be considered for admission, students must meet the following requirements and submit an application. 1. A minimum EMU cumulative GPA of 2.3 (C+ average). If a student has not yet established an EMU GPA, a combined GPA of 2.3 from all transfer institutions will be accepted. 2. The following courses (or equivalent transfer credit or documentation) are to be completed prior to admission with a grade of C or higher and count toward the total credit hours required for this major. a. AVMT Aircraft Maintenance - 3 hrs b. AVMT Flight Operations - 3 hrs c. AVT Introduction to Air Transportation - 3 hrs 3. The following courses (or equivalent transfer credit or documentation) are to be completed prior to admission with a grade of B or higher and count toward the total credit hours required for this major. a. AVFO Aviation Ground Instruction - 3 hrs b. AVFO 175a - Private Pilot Certification - 3 hrs c. AVFO 175b - Private Pilot Certification - 3 hrs 4. Complete the Private Pilot licensure within one calendar year of initial registration for AVFO 175a. Additional Information If the FAA Private Pilot Written Exam was completed before entering EMU, the student must present the official FAA Private Pilot Written Exam score as documentation of successfully passing the exam. Appropriate credit for AVFO 170 will be applied to the student s academic transcript. If the Private Pilot license was obtained before entering EMU, the student must present the FAA Private Pilot license. (Presenting the written exam score, as stated above, is not necessary.) Appropriate credit for AVFO 170, AVFO 175a, and AVFO 175b will apply to the student s academic transcript. Application Process 1. Attend a mandatory meeting during exam week with the aviation faculty. These meetings will be held once a semester to discuss application procedures, program policies, program costs, and other topics pertinent to completion of the aviation curriculum. 2. Complete all of the requirements for admission that are listed above. 3. Submit an application, with appropriate documentation, by October 1, February 1, or July 1. Application forms are available online at or from the Aviation, Program Coordinator. Decision Notification Process Students will be notified by my.emich after the aviation faculty makes a decision. The program faculty will notify the student no later than three weeks before the start of the semester following the application. Retention Policy In addition to the secondary admission requirements, students are required to: Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.3 (C+) on a 4.0 scale. A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.3 will be placed on program probation for the next succeeding term (or two semesters if the student is a part-time student defined as taking 11 credits or less). If the student fails to raise his or her cumulative GPA to 2.3 or higher with the grades earned during the probationary term(s), the student will be dismissed from the program. Students may reapply for admission once their GPA is raised to 2.3 or higher. A student who fails to earn a B grade or higher in any AVFO course will not be permitted to progress in the flight program. 15

17 Financial Aid Checklist To avoid delay in funding and flight training, complete these necessary steps TWO (2) months before classes begin! Use the worksheet on the back of this checklist to help you with the process. This process must be completed every time you register for a flight course. After you Register for Classes you must complete the following: Contact Financial Aid Office Contact: , financial_aid@emich.edu Request a Budget Increase to cover Flight Fees, State which Flight Course you are requesting an increase Flight Courses: AVFO 175a - Private Pilot Certification I - $8,300 AVFO 175b - Private Pilot Certification II - $8,300 AVFO Instrument Rating - $9,400 Apply for Loans Follow the instructions on your Award Notification to receive a Direct Loan If you have already received the annual maximum Direct Loan borrowing limit, you may need to apply for a private or PLUS loan to meet the additional need created by the budget increase Processing Accept your aid amount through my.emich All aid (Scholarships, Pell Grants, SEOG, Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loan, and Private Loans) will be applied to your EMU student account The aid covers all tuition and fees first, and then becomes a zero balance, the excess aid will be refunded to your EagleOne account according to your refund preference, these funds shall be used for your flight fees Funds should be available the first week of classes Before you start flight training Transfer your refund to your Eagle Flight Centre Account In order to avoid delays in your flight training and graduation, transfer ALL funds (Line F) associated with the flight course budget increase to Eagle Flight Centre within the first week of classes It is YOUR responsibility to transfer the funds To Transfer: bring your EagleOne card to Eagle Flight Centre, ask the front desk to put a deposit on your account (You may have to call EagleOne card support to request a large transaction) According to Eagle Flight Centre policies; all students will require $500 in their account before being dispatched an aircraft. If your account is below $500 you will be placed on ground status until additional funds are added. If your account is below $100 you will be placed on inactive status and ineligible for ground or flight training. Dispatch will alert you when you fall below $1,000 and can provide your balance on request. If your balance falls below $2,500 please make appropriate arrangements to prevent any disruptions in your flight training. 16

21 When do I start flying? Your first week in the program. Your second lesson is in the plane (weather and financing depending). All of your lessons are one-on-one. Can I rent the airplane outside of normal class time? Yes! It is encouraged! See rate sheet for rental costs. Can I take passengers? Yes! After you receive your private certificate, you are allowed to take passengers. How many times should I fly each week? You are required to fly at least 3 times a week or more. The more you fly the faster you will receive your certificates, and potentially save money. Can I fly over summer? Yes! It is the best time to fly! Does the winter weather shut down training? Sometimes. Weather is a big factor to operations. This is a great opportunity to complete your ground lessons. Is there ROTC programs? Yes! Eastern offers Army ROTC, University of Michigan offers dual enrollment for Navy and Air Force ROTC. How far is the airport from campus? Is there transportation to/from campus? About 10 min drive (5 miles). No there is no transportation to/from campus. Freshman may have cars on campus. Are there aviation related student organizations on campus? Yes! Alpha Eta Rho, Sigma Chi is an aviation related student organization on campus. The organization prides itself in its approach to the aviation field, fostering camaraderie, friendship, networking, and support. Membership is open to all collegiate men and women. Is there job opportunity during college? Yes! In addition to the traditional college jobs on campus (housing, dining, etc) There are aviation related jobs offered. Delta Air Lines hires students and offers internships. We are located in the epicenter of aviation industry. There are many companies at Detroit Metro Airport, Willow Run Airport and Ann Arbor Airport that hire students. Eagle Flight Centre hires Flight Instructors and students as dispatchers and lineman in their sophomore to senior years. How much does flight training cost? Is it in addition to tuition? For more details see rates sheet. Yes, flight training costs are in addition to tuition. Make sure you can secure the necessary funds before starting. The fees are not due up front. Can I use scholarships, grants, student aid and student loans to fund my flight time? Yes! Contact financial aid to discuss your options: emich.edu/finaid Is EMU R-ATP approved? Yes! The FAA has reduced the number of flight hours required for EMU Aviation students to earn an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. Airlines and Charter companies, with nearly a 100% placement rate for all graduates. Do I have to take a physical to start training? Yes. You have to complete a medical. We suggest getting a Class I Medical. Contact our enrollment coordinator for more details. I wear glasses and/or contacts can I still fly? Yes, see your AME for more details. What certificates will I accomplish while at EMU and how long will it take to complete them? You will earn your Private Pilot Certificate (about 6-9 months), Instrument Rating (about 5-6 months), Commercial Pilot Certificate (about 1 year), you then have an option to complete either your Certified Flight Instructor or Multi-Engine Commercial Rating (about 6 months). In total it can take about 2 ½ to 4 years to complete. You also do have the option to complete Certified Flight Instructor: Instrument, and Certified Flight Instructor: Multi-Engine. I have my Private Pilot Certificate; can I transfer it in? Yes! We can NOT accept anything higher than a Private Pilot Certificate. What type of aircraft will I be flying? Our fleet is comprised of new Cessna 172SP Skyhawks, complex Cessna 172RGs, and a multi-engine Piper Seminole. Our Cessna Skyhawk aircrafts are equipped with state-of-the-art Garmin G1000 glass cockpit avionics. Will I be able to fly jets leaving the program? No. We train you to get your commercial certificate. Usually the company that hires you after graduation will train you on a specific aircraft (jet or otherwise). How many hours will I graduate with? hours. How do I build hours so the airlines will hire me? Eagle Flight Centre hires its own Flight Instructors from the graduation pool each year. It takes about 1 year to build from 300 hours to 1,000 hours. You don t have to instruct to build hours you can also do: Aerial survey, pipeline patrol, sky diving operations, just to name a few. Will those hours count after graduation? Yes! Hours accumulate your entire career. What is EMU Aviation alumni doing now?
