5 DECEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 23, DAY(S) IN ARUSHA ARUSHA: The city of Arusha is situated on the eastern edge of the Great Rift Valley, below Mount Meru, Africa's 5th highest mountain. Named after the local tribe Wa-Arusha, the city was founded by German colonialists in the early 1900's. This region is the most popular transit hub of northern Tanzania, as it is surrounded by some of Africa's most famous landscapes and national parks. Explore the ever growing city or escape to the surrounding coffee plantations. This is also the ideal place to purchase the Tanzanite jewel, which is solely mined in this area. LEGENDARY LODGE: In a picture-perfect setting on a working coffee farm on the outskirts of Tanzania's safari capital of Arusha, you'll find Legendary Lodge, just 15 minutes from Arusha airport. The main lodge, an old colonial plantation style farmhouse sets the tone for what is to come and is best described as an idyllic retreat set in lush, tropical gardens. 7 DECEMBER 24 - DECEMBER 27, DAY(S) IN GRUMETI RESERVE GRUMETI RESERVE: Singita Grumeti is situated adjacent to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, where the great migration takes place every year. This annual trek of two million animals through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the greatest natural spectacles in the world. While the migration can be witnessed from June to August, during the months of September and October some of the wildebeest herds and other species, including zebra and Thomson's gazelle, remain. During November, southbound wildebeest return from the Masai Mara in Kenya back into the reserves from the onset of the first rains SINGITA SASAKWA LODGE: Situated adjacent to Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, the home of the great migration, and set within acres of the game rich Singita Grumeti concession, Singita Sasakwa is a classic Edwardian style manor house and the flagship of the Singita Grumeti stable. 9 SINGITA GRUMETI BUSH WALK: A bush walk allows one to engage in the African wildlife's natural environment, walking in an animal's footprints, witnessing the daily drama of their lives, and most importantly, sharing their space. Highly qualified rangers share their wealth of knowledge on animals, trees, insects, and birds, the medicinal uses of plants, regional folklore, and basic outdoors skills. Walking safaris are a highly recommended activity. DAY 4 DECEMBER 26, 2019 / GRUMETI RESERVE / SINGITA SASAKWA LODGE SINGITA GRUMETI SUNDOWNERS: Singita Grumeti delights in creating special feasts for guests. Imagine dining under a lamp-lit acacia, or around the campfire with star-lit skies, and feasting on grilled lobster fresh from Dar es Salaam, sipping chilled champagne, and being entertained by a dance spectacle that is certain to enthrall, all with as the sun sets dramatically over the vast skyline. 10 DAY 5 DECEMBER 27, 2019 / GRUMETI RESERVE / SINGITA SASAKWA LODGE SINGITA GRUMETI ANTI-POACHING TEAM: The Singita Grumeti Fund anti-poaching team is made up of 120 dedicated scouts. These scouts patrol the 350,000-acre private concession and are based in 12 scout camps and in 12 observation posts (OP) dotted across the reserve. Each OP is manned by two scouts who are constantly surveying the area for any unusual activity. This could be poachers coming through the protected area or vehicles that do not belong to the company or a herd of cattle entering the area or an animal in distress. The scouts are responsible for quickly identifying any incursions and reporting them to the rest of the anti-poaching team who can then act accordingly. Two scouts are stationed at the OP for one week at a time. They share responsibilities of cooking, cleaning and most importantly making sure that one person is on the look-out at all times. 11 DECEMBER 28 - DECEMBER 29, DAY(S) IN VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK: The Virunga Volcanoes are a chain of 15,000 ft volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcan) in Rwanda has eight families of mountain gorilla living on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. Guests trek on foot to see the magnificent mountain gorilla which is considered to be one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences. BISATE LODGE: Although Bisate only opened its doors in June 2017, it has already set quite a benchmark when it comes to style and luxury. A dramatic setting in a natural amphitheater created by an extinct volcanic cone is matched only by the lodge's exceptional architectural design. Each of Bisate Lodge's six forest villas are inspired by weaver birds' nests and resemble organically-shaped thatched pods that are raised above the forest floor. Natural materials such as volcanic stone, wood and thatch have been used throughout, and the interiors offer contemporary, cutting-edge Rwandan style. While this unique camp is reason enough to visit Rwanda - it is of course an amazing base for gorilla tracking and numerous other activities. Proudly eco-aware, the lodge is working on a reforestation project along with other local initiatives and embraces environmental principles such as harvesting of rain-water and grey water re-use. 13 GORILLA TREKKING : Includes 1 permit per person VOLCANOES GORILLA TREKKING: For many, seeing gorillas in the wild offers is the experience of a lifetime, and Rwanda offers one of the best locations for gorilla trekking. In the Park National des Volcanos, there are eight families of Mountain Gorilla living on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. Gorilla treks start in the cultivated land on the base of the volcanoes and proceed up into the beautiful dense, misty forests. A maximum of 64 gorilla permits are issued per day; during high season, these sell out far in advance. Please let us know as early as possible if you'd like to make gorilla tracking part of your itinerary, and we will arrange your permit. 14 DECEMBER 30 - JANUARY 1, DAY(S) IN MAASAI MARA - KENYA MAASAI MARA - KENYA: Maasai Mara, situated in southwest Kenya, is known as Africa's greatest wildlife reserve. Famous for the abundance of lion, the great wildebeest migration (July to October) and the Masai people (known for their distinctive customs and dress), it is without a doubt one of Africa's most famous safari destinations. It is also home to over 95 species of mammals and 570 recorded species of birds. Maasai Mara National Reserve stretches 580 sq miles and sits ft above sea level. The terrain of the reserve is primarily grassland and riverine forest with clumps of acacia trees. ANGAMA MARA: Suspended as it is on the rim of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, it is said that Angama Mara is where heaven and earth collide. Leaving Angama Mara and heading South along on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, Maasai Naturalist offer guided walks through lovely forests and open areas in-between. The birding high above the Maasai Mara, is especially rewarding. Walking safaris at Angama Mara are tailor-made for every guest, and every fitness-level is taken into consideration. 17 DAY 10 JANUARY 1, 2020 / MAASAI MARA - KENYA / ANGAMA MARA OPTIONAL ACTIVITY: Hot Air Balloon Safari (additional costs apply) ANGAMA HOT AIR BALLOON (EXCLUDED): The soft, early morning breeze takes the balloon southwards towards the Tanzanian border, with the typical flight path along the Mara River and its adjoining forest, and over the open plains beyond. This is an unmatched safari - even the lions look up in surprise as one sails on by - and all the animals of the Mara are visible from the air. A flight normally lasts around one hour, and ends with a sometimesbumpy landing amidst the termite mounds, all part of the adventure. Once you've settled back to earth, toast the morning's activities with a celebratory champagne breakfast - specially prepared under a tree in the middle of nowhere. 20 DAY 12 JANUARY 3, 2020 / LAIKIPIA COUNTY - KENYA / SEGERA RETREAT SEGERA'S CONSERVATION - PATAS MONKEY: Patas monkeys are attractive yellow-gold inhabitants of grassland and woodland savannahs, distributed across Africa between the Sahara and the tropical rainforests of Senegal and Ethiopia. The eastern subspecies, however, occurs only in Kenya, western Ethiopia and northern Tanzania, and is very uncommon. It feeds on whistling thorn and faces habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and charcoal production. Segera has initiated an exciting project to help save the vulnerable Patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas pyrrhonotus), with monitoring patrols that identify and track Patas troops on Segera as well as in neighboring communal areas that share their range. SEGERA'S CONSERVATION - LION RESEARCH: In collaboration with the Zeitz Foundation and Mpala Wildlife Research Centre, Segera's lion conservation research aims to measure the impact of lions on endangered Grevy's zebras and other declining ungulates in Laikipia, and to produce a teaching curriculum that engages school children in the dynamics of predator/ prey relationships. This research will improve our understanding of wildlife trends, help manage competing needs of predators, prey, pastoralists and ecotourism, and encourage positive attitudes toward lions and other predators amongst Kenya's future generations. Art is an essential part of Segera and together with your guide, you will interpret, debate and appreciate these intriguing works. PAYMENT & CANCELLATION POLICY The cost of your trip has been quoted in USD, however, please note that because some services are quoted in ZAR we had to use an INDICATIVE exchange rate (issued by our financial department) to convert ZAR to USD. Please note that this conversion is to be used as an estimate only - The South African Rand vs. US Dollar is subject to volatile currency fluctuation so we would have to give an accurate quotation in USD at time of booking & making payment. ROAR AFRICA reserves the right to amend the total due should the exchange rate fluctuate more than 0.5%. To confirm a reservation, we require a 50% deposit. The balance of payment must be made no later than 60 days prior to the date of departure. Note that bookings that fall between Dec 15 - Jan 15 require a 100% payment to be made 12 weeks prior to travel. This requirement is not made by ROAR AFRICA but rather it is required by the hotels & lodges that we work with as this holiday period is their busiest time of year. All tour costs are based upon the services specified in each customised itinerary. Services are sold as a complete package and ROAR AFRICA cannot provide a breakdown of trip component costs. All costs quoted are based on availability and subject to change until receipt by ROAR AFRICA of your Initial Deposit. If a cancellation is made 12 weeks (90 days) out or more before departure, ROAR AFRICA will retain 30% of the total cost of the trip. If a cancellation is made between 8 weeks and 12 weeks (60-90 days), ROAR AFRICA will retain the initial 50% deposit. Cancellations made under 8 weeks (60 days) are 100% non-refundable. *Cancellation of any internal flights booked within South Africa is subject to 100% cancellation fee. Should you fail to join a safari or a tour or join it after departure or leave it prior to its completion, no refund can be made. We strongly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation insurance. VISAS 2 BLANK VISA PASSPORT PAGES and between 1 to 6 months validity (please see country information for specifics) in your passport are recommended for entry into all African countries. Tanzania : US citizens with valid passports may obtain a visa either from their local consulate, prior to travel, or upon arrival at any port of entry into Tanzania. Rwanda : U.S. citizens visiting Rwanda will be issued with an entry visa valid for a period up to 30 days and pay for a visa ($30) upon arrival without prior application. Those wishing to stay for longer than 30 days and/or enter more than once can exit and re-enter Rwanda to obtain another 30-day visa, or pre-apply for a tourist visa (T2), valid for 90 days with multiple entry. Kenya : US citizens require a visa for entry into Kenya. Kenya has recently launched ecitizen, where all nationals requiring a visa can log onto the online portal and apply for their Kenya entry visa before travel. VACCINATIONS Tanzania : Tanzanian authorities require that all visitors must be vaccinated against Yellow Fever and be able to produce a Yellow Fever certificate together with their passport at all points of entry and exit. This is to prevent the international spread of the disease by protecting countries from the risk of importing or spreading the Yellow Fever virus. It is also to protect individual travelers who may be exposed to Yellow Fever infection. Rwanda : Travelers to Rwanda are required to have a yellow fever vaccination certificate if they have passed through a country with risk of yellow fever. Kenya : Kenyan authorities require that all visitors must be vaccinated against Yellow Fever and be able to produce a Yellow Fever certificate together with their passport at all points of entry and exit. This is to prevent the international spread of the disease by protecting countries from the risk of importing or spreading the Yellow Fever virus. It is also to protect individual travelers who may be exposed to Yellow Fever infection. 26 COMMERCIAL FLIGHTS Although every effort will be made to book your internal flights in Business Class where available and budget allowing, please be advised that Business class is not offered on all routes for travel in Africa. Occasional aircraft changes on these routes may lead to business class being offered on a route where it is not a standard practise. This is beyond ROAR AFRICA's control. If you are not sure of the class of travel offered and booked for various flights on your itinerary, please feel free to request more details from your sales consultant. SCHEDULED CHARTER FLIGHTS / LODGE HOPS To and from camps and lodges could potentially have multiple stops en-route to your destination. This allows the plane to collect and drop-off other passengers. The times and exact route of these flights are finalized 24 hours prior to departure depending on the other passengers on the flight and their destinations. Additionally, should weather not permit for a flight, lodge hops will be substituted with a road transfer where possible. Most scheduled charter flights in East Africa and Southern Africa are offered on single engine aircrafts operated by a crew of a single pilot, should your preference be to travel with a twin engine aircraft and 2 pilots, ROAR AFRICA can quote on a private charter flights for each of the affected flight routes.
