4 GEOGRAPHY Capital City : Ternate Time Zone : (UTC+9) Coordinate : 0 47 N E Area : 111,39 km 2 Borders : North : Moluccas Sea West : Moluccas Sea South : Moluccas Sea East : Ternate City and Halmahera Strait Air Temperature : 21,2 C 31,3 C Relative Humidity : 83,5% DEMOGRAPHICS Population : 207,295 (2011) Density : 1,860.98/km 2 ECONOMY As the largest and most advance city in the province, Ternate City economy relies on various economic sector, mainly in trade and service sector. The city is the hub of trade for the North Maluku Province. INFRASTRUCTURE Transportation The city relies heavily on its Sultan Babullah Airport and several seaports as its transportation and also supporting neighbouring cities. Telecommunication Ternate City is supported by adequate telecommunication facilities, mobile network is served by Telkomsel Company and landline network is served by the Telkom Indonesia. Energy The main source of energy in Ternate City comes from the Diesel Generator and Solar Panel. P a g e 3 12

5 TOURISM FACTS ATTRACTION Numerous old forts that were built by different empires during the colonial era scattered around the city. For examples are Fort Kalamata and Fort Tolukko that was built by the Portuguese. Fort Oranje, which was built by the Dutch, is the largest fort in the island. It was the Headquarter of the Dutch East India Company until it was moved to Batavia (Jakarta) in Some forts are no longer exist, leaving only some ruins, such as Fort Kastela, which was built by the Spanish. The palace of the Sultan of Ternate still exists. It is now converted into a museum. The museum displayed some old artifacts from the Sultanate of Ternate at its maximum extent, such as weapons, armors and traditional Ternatean clothes. There are several beach in the island that offers spectacular views, such as the Tobololo beach and Sulamadaha beach. There are also some beautiful lakes in the island, such as the Laguna Lake and Tolire Lake ACCESSIBILITIES The main entry into Ternate City is from Sultan Babullah Airport that is located within the city. The nearest international airport is the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar and the Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado. P a g e 4 12

6 REGIONAL TOURISM POLICY TOURISM IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Ternate City is one of the national priorities in terms of tourism development. The Ministry of Tourism have appointed Ternate City as one of the National Tourism Development Zone. Tourism has become one of the main priority sector for development by the local government. The government and the community have fully aware of Ternate City tourism resources and it s potential for economic contribution through tourism development. They are welcoming investors that are willing to cooperate not only on developing more tourism attraction and facilities but also to develop in all of tourism aspects of Ternate City.
