Tourism industry is smokeless industry, income generating industry, employment generation industry and foreign currency earner. The study reveals that the Ethiopian tourism is having unique tourism offerings, even though it is not able to en cash them up to maximum level, owing to so many draw backs like in effective amenities, that is accommodation, food, cleanliness of the hotels and restaurants, services in that, transport and connectivity in certain cases it lacking. Most of the tourists responded that they would come again and again and availing their facilities means the importance of the particular tourist destinations and non other options. For instance the tourists from Europe, Gulf countries, and American countries are arranging by their own packages for visiting tourist attractions in Ethiopia. But lack of tourist facilities and amenities the tourist are always relying on the private sector. It s one ways great lose for the Ethiopian tourism. And also they believe that the Ethiopia is having more tourism potentiality to develop one of the best tourist destinations in the African continent and in the world, only the thing is to short out the defiencies in all spears or in all wings. 2 INTRODUCTION TO TOURISM Travel and tourism involves the movement of people from their place of residence to a tourist destinations. The term Tourism as we know or mean it today is of relatively modern origin. Only five decades back the tourism has developed for various factors, such as Trade and commerce, exploring new lands, for religious purpose, for their survival etc. but it gave real boost for this industry by the improvement of speedy transport and communication. And also in the globalizing world it s easy to access to any destination, by the development these facilities and information technology. Now a day s more than 920 million tourists are travelling all over the world, it is further estimated by WTO that international tourism arrivals worldwide would reach 1.5 billion by the The economic impacts of the number of tourists movements globally is enormous. The great phenomenon that is being witnessed today is a visible result of the great waves of technology which have changed the social geography of the world since the late nineteenth century. In the beginning it was the rail- road system which opened up the continents and made possible of industrial towns and cities. This was followed by the introduction of motor cares which started to decentralize nations by sapping the vitality of the cities through the developmental of suburbs. Finally we have the aero plane which, when linked with rising affluence, has led to a whole new concept the mass holiday tourist. The rapid development in the means of transport and communication has made the whole world practically one neighborhood and has made travel and easy affair. Today millions of peoples seem to enjoy the prospect of moving from one continent to another in a matter of hours. The benefits of tourism are not to be judged in terms of economic benefits alone. Tourism has wider implications encompassing not only economic benefits but also social and cultural benefits as well. Significance of the Study Ethiopian tourism is having a lot of scope for the development of tourism industry. It has number of tourism destinations like heritage centers, Pilgrimage centers, world famous heritage destinations, cultural destinations and natural attractions Perennial Rivers and Lakes etc. But these sources are not utilizing properly to catch the tourists up to maximum levels. Because of so many laggings behind this, that is infrastructural problems, marketing facilities, lack of governmental interest on the development of the tourist destinations in the country and in the regional levels. And also in efficiency in the mobility of the international tourists from other nations to Ethiopia. The research focused on the mind set/ opinion of tourists on the Ethiopian tourism and attractions, it helps to value the perception and requires of the tourists at the various tourist destinations of Ethiopia: Improve the tourist inflow 2 P a g e

Actually the tourism development was started in the Nation on 1960, after it was greatly declined during the Derg region i.e on 1970 between Again the initiations has taken in 1990 onwards, but lack of infrastructure developments like road connectivity to all the tourist destinations, accommodation facilities, lack of publicity of the tourist destinations, and financial constrains. addition to this drought and political instability in the nation were the major causes for its development. One interesting aspect is the growing of eco tourism packages including adventure travel, trekking and walking safaris, that are making up much of the tour operators in the country. 7 USIN PORTERS MODEL FOR ANALYSIS This analysis was done by using the porters five model, concentrating mainly on the tourists. This five forces which is essential for every industry for take care. Its as follows: Competition Service Providers Substitutes Customers New Openings 1. Competition : Ethiopian tourism has faces varies types of competitions in the field of tourism Industry, within the country itself, there is a competition in the field of tourism among the regional tourist attractions such as: * Oxum (Tigray region) * Gondar Fort (Amhara region) * Lalibel (Amhara region) It is also facing competition from the hill stations and other Natural resorts such as Seimien Mountains Guna Mountains Lake Tana It is also facing the competition from other countries in the international level such as: Kenya Eritrea Egypt European countries Gulf countries Most of the tourists are preferring to visit Egypt and Kenya for their heritage and Natural attractions, and also maximum domestic tourists are also preferring to visit Gulf and European countries because of the nearness. To prevail over these kinds of competitions. The Ethiopian Tourism has to search the solutions to boost up the tourism business in the country. For this it must build a unique selling proposition. To match the national and International competition. It is also very important in the matter of business line. 2. Service Providers: i can say it is spinal column for the development of any industry, especially like Tourism industry, the service providers are as follows: * Road connectivity * Railways * Road ways * Airlines 7 P a g e

* Travel Agents * Hotel Industry / Restaurants / Resorts * Locals * Support of Governments (National and State level) * Trained Guide services * Safety to the tourists Dissimilar the products the different characteristics are playing vital role to conduct the successful tour package. To manage all these in a success manner we should require the following assistance i.e Place People Physical indications 3. Substitutes: To exchange to the Ethiopian Tourism are any other options would like to do on a leisure times/days. That is like * Visiting Parks * Watching Telivision * Religious gatherings * Video games * Internet The above substitutes do not result straight to the tourism; they can still be a limit to it. Instead of travelling far off distances for a holiday, present day people are penetrating easy entertainment from the above. And also the concept of Aannual holiday is yet to catch up in Ethiopia. They must be use to one s own improvement by making them available at the tourist attractions. (4) Customers/ Tourists Customers are the more important to boost any business in any industry, here we are discussing about the Tourism Industry. so we can call them as a tourist customers or tourists. The tourism industry existing for the tourists only and also the industry to try to give optimum satisfaction to the tourists. Present day the tourist customers are very brilliant and more informative. If it is necessary that their needs and preferences are understood so that the tourism industry in Ethiopia can understand as to where its position in terms of providing services to the tourists and achieve their satisfactions. This analysis has done by the author by providing questionnaires to the tourists. The study findings are as follows, with particular to the Ethiopian tourism Vacations are the most common purpose of visit to the tourist places in the world special to Ethiopia. Because these days vacations for all the family members like students and employees. For pilgrimage tourism the tourist will come to Ethiopia from various parts of the world like Gulf countries, European 8 P a g e

countries, American countries and Asian countries. Addition to this domestic tourist also visiting the tourist destinations in the country. Resorts, Restaurants and hotels will be fully occupied in these days comparatively non holidays periods, the boost up these business some specialised people are working in the field. The average stay of the tourist was found 2 to 4 days, which is not too lengthy or too short. The Ethiopian Tourism and the private management has to find the ways to keep them long period in their accommodation places by offering concessions and others in the hotel tariff and providing facilities etc. Majority of the tourists are coming to Ethiopia by Aeroplanes ( especially international tourists ), and their personal arrangements and Public transportations are using the domestic tourists. But Road transportation is very poor and less- need to improve more and to connect to all the tourist destinations. Oral cavity canvassing is the most effectively working to marketise the tourism facilities in Ethiopian tourism. If once the tourist visited one tourist place and got extreme satisfaction by the services, automatically he can propagate about that centre. Now- a- days, all the tourism departments are spending millions of rupees on the marketing, according to the researcher view it is waste of money and also loss for the governments. This is the hymn i.e if we satisfy the tourists by providing good facilities, automatically the rate of tourist inflow will be increased. Tourists inflow will be more in some places like Oxum, Lalibela, Seimein Mountains, Guna Mountains etc., A large portion of Ethiopia is yet to be explore. In the satisfaction point of the tourists can concentrate on some points i.e. Pleasant climate, scenery, importance of the particular destination. They were not very satisfied with the prices, shopping facilities and sanitations etc. Various satisfaction variables could be differentiate as follows: Natural factors: Weather and Climate Scenery Satisfaction Physiographic setting Necessities: Amenities Food and drinking water Sanitation facilities * Price related factors: Prices ( low or High) Offeredable Value for Money 9 P a g e

Safety and Services: The tourist can fore most think about the safety point Security The attitude of local people Cheating rate The Infrastructure facilities: Road connectivity and network Transport facilities Air, Rail connectivity Accommodation Shopping facilities Medical facilities Information technology etc., It can be noticed that overall satisfaction is combined with above all variables and weather and scenery, thus suggesting that the tourists satisfaction depending on unique places offerings. Here satisfaction of the tourist if the prime offering of Ethiopia i.e Scenery, climate, infrastructure, services, facilities, cost and natural unique factors: Majority of the tourists felt that Ethiopia has a lot of scope to become a number one destination in the world, because of its unique culture, famous heritage monuments( Oxum, Lali bela, Harare etc., ), Eco tourism sites like Siemein mountains, Guna mountains, Natural lake like Lake Tana. With all this, the tourists opinioned that if properly we can utilise these resources the Ethiopian tourism will become a number one tourist destination in the African continent and in the world also and make a mark in the world tourist map. Tourist expectations are generally not meeting in the Ethiopian tourism, but they depend on the presence of necessities and infrastructure facilities. Ethiopia is the most attractive tourist destination in African country comparatively other destinations in the continent, but it is not equally attractive when compared to places in abroad. Some inconveniences faced by the tourists, those are common, but it is a need to short out these inconveniences also, those are: Lack of transport facilities for many tourist places Lack of proper road connectivity to the destinations Water shortage Lack of maintenance Cheatings in some places Lack of information to the tourists 10 P a g e

Lack of infrastructure facilities Lack of sanitation in some tourist destinations Sometimes the tourists are cheating by locals Lack of tourist guide service. Un trained front office staff, they will not given proper information to the tourists Lack of identification/ the tourism employees are not following uniform code Lack of shopping facilities Un skilled work force SUGGESTIONS FROM THE TOURISTS: The suggestions from the tourists who faced direct inconveniences from the tourist employees at destinations, some of them are: Providing of required information in tourism centres There is no availability of tourist broachers in most of the centres Maintenance of the places are not good in some places Improved the proper roads and shopping malls To provide hot water facilities To arrange the parking places To give more publicity about the tourism facilities and places, To provide medical facilities To employ the skilled persons To maintain uniform code To maintain id cards to each employee To develop the gardens and children play grounds To open more tourist high way restaurants To introduce the tourism guide services To improve the information facilities To operate the tourism packages connecting to all the tourists destinations To give complimentary break fast/ other concessions to the tourists who are staying in the tourist properties To offer concession for group bookings in all facilities To appoint tourism security forces and deploy in sensitive places like Siemen park, Lali bels, Oxum, Lake Tana etc., To open night shoping malls at Addis ababa, Awasa, Mekelle, oxum etc To provide more information facilities to the tourists To display required information to the tourists All the tourist places should be well connected with transport facilities and communication etc To establish the tourism related colleges and improve the skilled man power through them 11 P a g e

First and foremost recruit the intellectuals related to this department To strengthen the vigilance All the information is very valuable it directly provides attitudes, behaviour, needs, wants, preferences etc., of the tourists, which are very essential to build up the marketing strategies for development of tourism sector or industry not only in Ethiopia in any country in the world, it will be well suited. (5) New openings: Now a days in every country is realizing the potentiality of the tourism and importance of tourism and exhibits uniquely positioning themselves like * Recreational spots Ayurveda in Kerala * Beaches Resorts * Piligrimage like Vatikan city * Animal safari like Kenya Ethiopian tourism should be become an unique offerings to overcome all the deficiencies, and take in to advantage for improvement. The IT also very useful to boost up its business and developments SWOT ANALYSIS STRENGTHS Ethiopia is having a Unique Culture, it attracts all the types of tourists i.e domestic and International tourists, and they will enjoy with different sites such as Piligrimage, Heritage, Cultural and Environmental etc. That is Lalibela, Oxum, Gondar Port, Harare, Lake Tana, Simien National Park, Guna Mountains etc. Cultural festivals such as Ethipian epiphany and Ethiopian National Nationalists conventions etc., will attracts more tourists i.e domestic and International tourists. The Topography of Ethiopia will attracts more foreign tourists for trekking, for research and for recreation. Such as Simien National Park and Guna Mountains. Its really world wonders. For this purpose only the Simien mountains were recognised by the UNESCO, as a world Heritage centre. Its attracts the tourists through tout the year Well connected Airlines facilities to all the tourists attractions Generous People, and cordial Cost of Living will be more attractive World famous Rift valley, Water falls (abay river), Lake Tana, Simien Mountains, these are all the pride for the Nation and causes for attraction of more and more International tourists. WEAKNESSES Lack of Publicity Lack of Road connectivity to cover all the tourist attractions in the country 12 P a g e

In sufficient of Transport facilities In sufficient of Funds for the development of the tourist destinations Administrative lapses in the tourism departments Lack of skilled man power in the tourism departments Security problems for the tourists Lack of Literature about the tourists destinations in the country Shortage of faculty in the concern departments Lack of strict rules and its implementations In adequate of Marketing about the tourist destinations Lack of infrastructural facilities in all the tourists centres Un taped destinations are more and more in the study area Lack of information technology at the destinations OPPORTUNITIES I can say, the topographical setting itself is a boom for the development of tourism industry in the country Eco- tourism is gaining popularity Religious tourism is obtaining its own identity in the country Lake Tana is a big source for the development of tourism resorts, boating units, scuba diving and other tourism related activities Abundant opportunities for the development of rural tourism The location of study area was located between the developed and developing countries, it is also very good opportunities for the development of tourism sector It is also big source for the development of Heritage tourism Lack of un identified tourists destinations THREATS Adjacent countries like Kenya and Egypt s are diverting the large amount of tourists by its attractions like animal safari at Kenya and Pyramids at Egypt. And other attraction in the adjacent countries also playing vital role in the diversion of tourists Sometimes the infrastructural facilities/ security problems also giving threats for the tourists arrivals RECOMMENDATIONS Ethiopian Tourism has to provide Tourism package facilities to connect all the tourist attractions in the country or in the Regional wise To provide catering facilities at all the tourist destinations with all segment of the tourists with their pocket level 13 P a g e

Entertainment facilities should be provided in order to ensure a longer stay by the tourists. They must have a unique thing to take back with them. To give the boost for the development of the Eco- tourism, Piligrimage tourism, Heritage tourism, cultural tourism and rural tourism To take the measures for the control of cheating by the local people Local handicrafts and culture should be developed Tourism Department should take the measures to introduce the tourism subject in undergraduate and post graduate level of education in all the Universties. The Tourism Department should start by their own Tourism Institutes in the National and Regional wide, through them they have to give the training for the aspirants in the tourism fields i.e Training of Tourism guides, Hotel management courses and other tourism related programmes. Etc., The Ethiopian tourism has to allow the private sector and jointly operate / develop the tourism facilities such as Transportation, Accommodation, and the development of infrastructure facilities at the tourism destinations. To introduce the on-line facilities for booking facilities to all the tourist attractions in the National wide and Regional wise, for accommodation bookings, package bookings, tourism guides, security people( security guards) etc. To strengthen the marketing facilities and publicity about all the tourist destinations in the National and Regional wise. Tourism shopping facilities/ tourism outlets should be improve, and it can be opened through out the day and night, through these shops they have to sell tourism literature, tourism products of Ethiopia etc., Tourism Recreational centres should be opened in all the Regional headquarters in the country. The infrastructure facilities like roads, parking areas, sanitation facilities, gardens should be improved. Create new tourist destinations from the unexplored regions which must be opened at least in peak months or seasons. To opened tourism magazines through this it can be publicize it destinations and activities High tourist inflow areas should be maintain properly without any inconvenience to the tourists * The tourist destinations should maintain clean and hygienic conditions in all the times Ethiopian tourism information centres should be opened in other countries like Gulf countries, Europian countries, Kenya, Egypt and Libiaan countries atlease. Through this they have to give the information of Ethiopian tourism for the tourists. Role of government and private agents need to be emphasized Pre paid taxi services, package bus services, and guide services should keep in ready for the tourists needs Appoint intellectuals in higher cadres in the administrative divisions LTC facilities should be provide to all the government departmental employees to utilize the Ethiopian Tourism facilities Tourism festivals and melas should be conduct in various places in the country. 14 P a g e

Where ever the facilities are available there should be introduce the boating facilities, mainly Lake Tana is suitable for boating activities. And also the Government of Ethiopia has to take initiation to introduce different kinds of boats such as speed boats, fedal boats, double dec boats, and small cruises etc. To meet the different tourists needs/ interests. To introduce the sound and lighting system and lazer shows at Tourist centres like Oxum, Gondar, Lalibela, Harare etc., especially at the Heritage and piligrimage sites. Through which we have to entertainment the tourists, At every tourist hotels, sound and light shows, boating areas, rope way points, museums, should keep high alert and check every tourists with metal detectors to avoid untoward incidences. Because these days the terrorists groups are concentrating on the tourism places and destroying the peoples. To strengthen the well trained guide service To develop beach resorts To introduce insurance policy for the tourists Where every possible and where ever necessary that areas should be developed the ropeways and canopy walks for the convenience of the tourists To appoint the separate tourism forces and deploy them where ever necessary.
