1 ICEWS Event Aggregations Read Me ICEWS event aggregations are a way to create time series data, typically at a monthly level, out of the ICEWS coded event data (which was automatically extracted from news articles by the BBN ACCENT event coder). Each set of aggregations consists of multiple data parameters, which are ways of aggregating the event data within a given time interval. These data parameters first specify the way events are filtered (e.g., country affiliation, sector affiliation, etc.) and then how they are aggregated (e.g., via count, intensity average) for a given time interval. In this way, numerical data is created out of time series of underlying event data. The data is in CSV (comma-separated value) format, with fields enclosed by quotation marks and separated by commas. The first line of each file is a header, with subsequent lines containing data. The exact number and format of the files vary based on the type of aggregations. Data is presented in multiple files, with a single file covering multiple years; the years contained in the file are encoded in the file name. In all cases, the last year of data is withheld. Monadic Country Aggregations Monadic country aggregation data is contained in one or more files, with each file containing potentially multiple years' worth of data. The fields in the file are defined in the table below. All fields are required. Rows for which data values are all zeroes have been omitted from the files in order to minimize the size of the files. As we have not found ISO codes for these regions, we have adopted the code of 'PS-WB' for the West Bank and 'PS-GS' for Gaza Strip.
