Youth ages 16 to 21 work 20 hours per week in the parks, supervised by a Park District employee acting as an Alternative Work Program Supervisor. A MESSAGE FROM GENERAL MANAGER ROBERT E. Youth Engagement STARTS AT AN EARLY AGE A lot of the programs and activities in the Regional Parks are designed with the younger generation in mind, as part of a long-term vision. Through partnerships with schools and community agencies, the Park District is a starting point to instill love and respect for the natural world. Some of the many opportunities for young children to get in touch with nature and appreciate the outdoors include: toddlers meeting animals and helping in the garden at Historic Farm in Fremont; Family Nature Fun Hours and Fish Feeding at Crab Cove in Alameda; Fly Fishing Introduction or visits with Farmer Stanley at Tilden s Little Farm in Berkeley; and Delta Discoveries at in Oakley, just to name a few. Swim lessons start at age 6 months, Junior Lifeguards are ages 9 to 12, and Junior Lifeguard Aides are ages Many of these children go on to become lifeguards at age 16, and some continue in a career in parks or public safety. Many kids who start young in Park District programs or volunteer activities today, are likely to become the park employees of tomorrow. C A L I F O R N I A Coastal Cleanup Day Shoreline and Lake Parks Saturday, September 21 8:30 a.m. to noon Join us in our 29th annual shoreline, lake and creek cleanup! 3 Photo: Bill Knowland Get to School or Work on Regional Trails You may think of our extensive regional trail network in Contra Costa and Alameda counties for recreation, but did you know they are also part of a green transportation network? The start of a new school year is a good time to consider riding your bike to get around not only is it good for the environment, it s also good for your health. To plan your trip, visit our web site for helpful links, like the Bay Area Open Space Council s Transit and Trails route finder, see And to help kids and adults build their skills and safety, the Park District Recreation Department offers several programs in four series: Biking Safety Classes Road Cycling Beginning Cycling Destination Bike Adventures Look in this guide for program dates and details. Most of the Park District s 1,200 miles of trails are multi-use trails, that is, they are shared by hikers, dog walkers, bikers and horses. And in many parks you may come across wildlife or grazing animals. Some tips for sharing the trails: Check trail signs for allowable user groups (i.e. cyclists, equestrians). Hikers yield to horses; cyclists and skaters yield to hikers and horses. Do not pick wildflowers, enjoy their beauty and leave them for others to enjoy. Stay on designated trails. Do not cut switchbacks or take shortcuts! Keep dogs on leash unless it is specifically posted that they can be off leash. Do not litter pack it in, pack it out. COMING SOON! Trail safety app for smart phones when using Regional Parks. Cyclists must call out and/or ring bike bells when passing. Much more safety information is on our web site at parks/safety. If you want to help our East Bay PARK DISTRICT HERITAGE AND HISTORY The Park District of today is the result of decades of hard work by people who have collaborated to ensure that residents in this region will have access to a system of magnificent regional parklands. The stories of our history and heritage, told through a time line, photos and videos include: Anza Exploration in the San Francisco Bay Area The Oakland Hills Firestorm 20 Years Later Living Landscape The book, A Vision Achieved 50 Years of East Bay Regional Park District, was recently digitized by the Internet Archive. See these and more at org/about/history. KEEP TRAILS SAFE AND FUN FOR EVERYONE Meg has such a curiosity about her world, sniffi ng everything from leaves blowing across her path to cows. She stands as fearless among the cows and ground squirrels as she does among spring s wildfl owers. Photo: Angela Smith. Regional Parks Police Department educate park users and help keep the trails safe, check out the Volunteer Trail Safety Patrol. There are units for equestrians and cyclists. See more information and links to the online volunteer application at org/getinvolved/volunteer/safety. Park Stories Photo Contest Share your Park District memories and you could win! New themes & prizes every month. Health Matters East Bay Regional Park District AND ARE PROUD PARTNERS IN 2013 WITH THE MUTUAL GOAL OF PROMOTING HEALTH AND FITNESS. Healthy Feet Each step you take involves a remarkably intricate network of bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. That complexity combined with all the weight they carry accounts for why feet can be so prone to problems, including bone fractures, arthritis and plantar fasciitis, a swelling of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. If left untreated, foot problems may worsen. Going too far, too fast, or not warming up properly before exercise can set you up for painful or numbing injuries. Excess weight puts extra stress on your feet. Poorly fitting shoes and other footwear are common causes of foot problems as well. Keep your feet healthy by wearing comfortable, well-fitting shoes. Wash your feet regularly (especially between your toes), wear clean socks and try to rotate your shoes to give them time to air out. Walking is a great way to exercise your feet.
