fun facts and interesting information The ultimate magazine created for kids, by kids SHARKS By Jordan SUBMARINES By Andrew What do submarines do? BASKETBALL By Jason How to shoot and score foul balls When I went on vacation in the Bahamas I had a chance to swim and feed sharks. While it was a little scary, it was also a lot of fun. Even though I already knew many things about sharks, I learned some new cool facts about sharks from reading about them. For example, I learned that there are more than 350 different kinds of sharks and that most sharks have been around for 64 million years. That s when there were dinosaurs. While I knew that the biggest shark is a whale shark another fact I learned was that sharks could be 6 inches to 40 feet long. The next largest shark is a basking shark There are two kinds of submarines. One of them is the attack submarine. It attacks other submarines using torpedoes. The other one is the Ballistic Missile submarine. It could shoot nuclear missiles. Submarines can have many different missions. One of them is a search and rescue mission. Another is sea control where the subs watch and protect the oceans. The last one is transportation of people or cargo. What kinds of equipment do submarines have? Subs have missiles torpedoes, a periscope, and sonar. A periscope is When you play basketball, how do you shoot and score? Sometimes you could pass the ball to your teammates and then the teammate could cross you up and try to make it in the hoop. If you shoot from free throw line and you get a foul you only have one point. If you shoot it from the three point line Continued on page 2 Continued on page 3 Continued on page 3 1

SHARKS (continued) is a basking shark and then the great white shark. Baby sharks are called pups. I also learned that sharks have a row of special sensors in the their skin that helps it track down small fish. The whale shark and the basking shark eat plankton and the hammerhead uses it s unusual shaped head to hold down its prey. They will eat anything, fish, squid, and even other hammerheads. However, the most interesting thing I learned was that a shark s skin is made of scales that look like tiny, pointed teeth. The shark s skin is so tough and hard that before the invention of sandpaper, sharkskin was used to polish wood. I also learned that the shark s teeth are serrated and that when one falls out they grow back a new one. 2

SUBMARINES (continued) a telescope under water. Also a sonar is used to track things. What kinds of people are on submarines? On a sub they have more than 100 men including 14 officers. The crew on the submarine is divided into different departments based on their jobs. There are engineering jobs, weapons jobs, and operation jobs. How long can submarines stay underwater? The most powerful subs can stay under for 5 months at a time. The other one, the diesel powered ones, can stay underwater for several days. This is a diagram of an attack submarine BASKETBALL (continued) you have four points because it is just like adding your points. A foul is when you use hard contact on your opponent. It is like when you touch the guy s hand and you still touch the ball. A foul is when someone rushes the ball out of your hand. Then if it was a foul you get one point. If the shot is not a foul then you get two points. How to dunk and do kick outs Another way to score is dunk. You have to run up to the hoop and slam it and you get two points. A kick out is one way to score when a lot of people are

BU Kids, First Edition Jordan is 8 years old. He is a student at the Ambrosoli International School in Uganda. His favorite hobbies are swimming, running, wave boarding and soccer. Jordan has been in many swimming galas and won many swimming trophies. When he grows up he would like to be a scientist and one day represent the USA. Andrew is a fourth grader at the Wellington School in Belmont. He likes fishing, hiking, and swimming. On the weekends Andrew enjoys fishing for bass at his house in New Hampshire. Andrew enjoys learning about World War II, which is why he chose to research submarines. Andrew has published many books and magazines on a variety of topics. Jason was born on June 29, 2001 in a hospital. Then when he became 2 years old Jason went to Dominican Republic. Then after about three years he was five years old and Jason went to Boston. He likes to play basketball, videogames, and he likes to play kickball. Then his brothers like to do the same but they don t like to play kickball. Jason wants to be a cop when he grows up. 4

August 5, 2010 Dear Reader,! We got the idea for this Survival Guide from the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. It is about a boy whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness and the troubles he has while learning to survive. This book is a how-to guide on survival in the wilderness.! We will tell you some of what you need to know about surviving in the wilderness. We will tell you about the climate and weather, and oil fields in Canada. This guide will also include all you need to know about moose and beavers. Lastly, we will share our intel on how to make a shelter and a fire. In the book Hatchet all of the above are mentioned or encountered by Brian, the main character.! Have a good time on your trip and happy and safe traveling.!!!!!!! Cheers,!!!!!! Isaac Vural Kyumin Lee [3]

Canada Climate and Weather in Canada by: Isaac Vural! Thunderstorms are common in the summer and they may be severe. Tornadoes also occur throughout Canada and can bring forest fires with them. You should bring warm clothing because it can get a little chilly. Also you should bring at least two heavy jackets just in case it gets really cold. There is a short summer, but it is still really hot so you should bring sunscreen. Petroleum in Canada by: Kyumin Lee In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Brian was going to visit his father. His father worked for an oil company in the oil fields of Canada. Petroleum production in Canada is a great industry. In the world, Canada is the seventh largest oil producing country. Canada is the largest source of oil for the United States. Canada s oil fields are also known as the Canadian Oil Patch. Canada produces about 283,000 cubic meters of oil each day. Most of the oil companies drill in the northern parts of the country in the tundra, where it is very cold all year. In Alberta, there are over 100 new wells drilled every day. The oil companies are important to the people in Canada because they jobs, oil, and money. [4]

Wildlife Moose by:isaac Vural! Moose are herbivores which means that they won t hurt you because they eat plants. The way you recognize a male from a female is that the males have antlers and females don t. Moose have been seen at lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Moose are also good swimmers. They can hold their breath underwater for 30 seconds. They can run up to 35 miles per hour and trot steady at 20 miles per hour. Beavers by: Kyumin Lee Beavers are mammals that are part of the wildlife in Canada. They live in most parts of North America. They have brown fur and leather-like tails. They are the second biggest rodent in the world. Beavers are semi-aquatic, which means that they sometimes live in water, and sometimes don t. They build their lodges in the water and they come onto land to eat and gather sticks. They are mostly nocturnal, which means that they are mostly out during the night. Beavers do not hibernate, or sleep during the winter. They stay safe and warm in their lodges. Beavers have bad eyesight, but are great at hearing, smell, and touch. Beavers live near streambeds. They create dams in the streams to create ponds to live in. They are always busy gathering wood to make their dams and lodges bigger or gathering wood to eat. Beavers use their teeth to chop down trees. Beavers like to eat the bark and small branches of birch, poplar, and willow trees. Their favorite food is water lilies. Beavers are ingenious because they can build dams and create ponds for others to enjoy. [5]

Survival How to Build a Shelter Isaac Vural In order to make a lean to you have to get the needed supplies. You also need to find a spot to put the lean to where it is not too bumpy on the ground. Also it needs to be in a safe place. Make the lean to able to withstand the harsh weathers in the area like snow, rain, sun, and the wind. In case of emergency make the lean to easy to get in and out of. Materials: poncho, rope, two trees or poles, sharpened sticks, rocks, leaves or pine needles. Steps: 1. Put the rope through the sleeves of the poncho. 2. Tie the two sides of the rope to the two trees or poles. 3. Set it up facing the direction of the wind and rain and hold the back down with rocks. [6]

Survival Fire in the Wilderness By Kyumin Lee Fire is very important for survival. It keeps you warm, keeps bugs and animals away, and you can cook with it. To make fire you need fuel, heat, oxygen and something to ignite the fire. Besides matches or lighters, there are two ways of making a fire: friction, (like rubbing sticks together) and percussion, (like banging stones). If you can t make a fire using a lighter or matches, you can use those primitive tools like rocks and sticks. You will have to rub two sticks together until they get hot enough to catch bits of paper on fire, or bang rocks together to create sparks that will catch the small bits of paper on fire. First of all, you need to know where to build a fire. Never build a fire under a tree with low branches because the heat from the fire could ignite the tree. Never build a fire any closer than 10 feet away from your shelter because the heat could set your shelter on fire. Don t build a fire under an overhang or inside a cave unless there is a natural flue, or way for the smoke to get out, because you don t want to breathe the smoke. Never build a fire near dried bushes or grasslands because the fire could set them on fire. Always keep the area where you will build your fire clear of ground debris like leaves and twigs because the fire could catch these on fire. Block the fire from the wind because the wind could move the hot coals into the leaves far away from you and set them on fire. When you make fire, make sure you get the wood ready before you build the fire. Out of all of the ways to set up the wood for fires, the teepee fire is the most efficient one to use. When you set up the sticks, it looks like a teepee. The inside of the teepee will have small bits of kindling and will have bigger sticks as you move towards the outside. The outside part of the teepee will have bigger sticks. Once the fire starts, you can add bigger pieces of wood, but make sure you keep the teepee shape. Be safe because if you re not careful you could start a forest fire or you could burn yourself. [7]
