3 President s Welcome by Brad Fenson The Yukon is a special place. I ve visited the scenic wilderness of this vast territory more than 30 times and never tire of its beauty and opportunity. From the wild flowers to the wildlife, the weathered old mountains make me reminisce of past adventures and long for another visit. I knew the first time I drove to Whitehorse that once would never be enough. Fishing remote lakes in the solitude of snow capped mountains and running a freighter canoe down one of the untamed rivers have led me to many adventures. Flying to remote lakes, high in the alpine, have produced caribou and moose with memories so vivid that they seem like they were only yesterday. Fly fishing for big grayling or trolling for monster lake trout, the fishing will captivate anglers or all ages and skill level. Every month has something new to offer but June is when the Yukon is most vibrant and alive. The long days and extra sunshine will tire you out Ah, the Yukon. The territory is rich in history from the First Nations people that thrived in the harsh environment to the gold rush that brought fortune seekers unprepared for the inhospitable wilderness. The stories of hardship and success building of the Alaskan Highway or the fateful trip of Corporal Dempster looking for the lost patrol create a sense of awe and wonder. We certainly are fortunate to live in modern times when we can experience this grand country with convenience. I joined OWC about the same time that I started my travels to the Yukon. The vast, untamed territory has provided me inspiration and materials for dozens of articles and photographic essays. I couldn t think of a better place to hold an annual conference for outdoor enthusiasts that are looking for communication ideas and experiences. I ve been to conferences across Canada and they ve always proven to be beneficial. From information sessions to meeting new members and building your network of outdoor communicators the Yukon conference is sure to be grand. The conference organizing committee has done an outstanding job of lining up activities and craft improvement sessions, while the Yukon will provide the backdrop for unlimited adventure. Mountain climbing, canoeing, fishing or visiting the museums and filling the memory card on your camera with the scenic vistas; we re going to have a great time. Enjoy the 2010 OWC convention. I hope it fills you with dreams and memories that enrich your life and craft. 3

4 Site Chairman s Welcome by Vice president Duane Radford Although the Whitehorse OWC Annual Conference is still months ahead now is the time to make plans to attend. The once in a lifetime cliché regarding conference attendance resonates well for all members because it s your chance to visit one of Canada s most storied and romantic regions where the world s last great gold rush occurred at the turn of the last century. The conference planners have crafted an action packed agenda, and with 24 hours of daylight you ll experience during the conference don t expect to catch many winks, so rest up before you arrive! Make a vacation out of your trip because an opportunity like this has been a long time coming, who knows when it will happen again!! Plan to take a holiday either before or after the conference and enjoy the many wonders of the Yukon. To say that the Yukon is a sportsman s paradise is a gross understatement it truly is one of the last great wilderness frontiers in our wonderful nation with awesome landscapes featuring majestic mountains and primal forests, numerous wildlife viewing opportunities, a network of well cared for campsites, great fishing and bird watching, canoeing to die for, etcetera.
