1 Dear athletes, parents and coaches, RE: Commonwealth Youth Games Hopefully you re all fit and healthy and looking forward to the Commonwealth Youth Games experience. Please see below some useful information about the tour. There will be one more newsletter after this one, most in likely in early July. PRE DEPARTURE COMPETITIONS If you haven t already done so, please ensure you have spoken to your state association regarding predeparture competition opportunities. A reminder that you are encouraged to compete 3-4 times during the lead up to our departure. This doesn t necessarily have to be a formal competition, it could be a simulated competition in training, time trial etc. Paul Pearce (National Junior Coaching Coordinator) will be in touch with you and your personal coaches to discuss your pre departure plans. WALKING ON TOUR Throughout an international tour, we find athletes and team staff accumulate a lot more incidental walking than they would at home. We are asking all athletes to have a go at tracking the amount of steps they do currently. An app on your phone, fitbit, etc. would do the job. This way, when we get overseas, you can then keep an eye on the number of steps you are doing. In the lead up to our departure, it would be a good idea to gradually increase your incidental walking so you re ready for the tour. This might sound trivial to young fit athletes, but it is possible to develop injuries relating to the increased load (extra walking). ATHLETE MANAGEMENT PLATFORM (AMS) A reminder that your AMS needs to be completed every day, even if it a rest day. This monitoring assists the staff in keeping up with your progress from now until departure. Obviously, the closer links you make with staff whilst in Australia, the better your own personal network becomes when you are overseas and living and competing in the village environment.

2 MONEY OVERSEAS As mentioned in the CYG information session in Sydney, we recommend athletes come overseas with an international travel money card, or some other means of getting cash out overseas. Whilst it s always good to come with a small amount of local currency, you don t want to carry too much cash on you, so a travel card is a good option. There are several types of cards available: - Load&Go Travel Card: - Multi-currency Cash Passport: - Travel card from your bank eg: - Virgin & Qantas frequent flier card (most new cards double as overseas travel cards) Athletes will need some spending money overseas. Examples of what they might need money for: snacks from shops, sports drinks, food at the airport etc. US Dollars are accepted widely throughout The Bahamas FLIGHTS All flights are organized and paid for by Commonwealth Games Australia. Friday 14 July Gold Coast Team members will travel from their home cities to Brisbane airport on the morning of Friday 14 July. Brisbane based athletes will meet the Team at Brisbane airport. The whole team will then travel down to the Gold Coast by bus. International Flights As mentioned in a previous , flight itineraries will be ed out hopefully around mid-june. A guide to the international flights can be found on the AA CYG portal page (this is the same document ed out recently). Please keep in mind that this has been booked as group travel. You will be assigned a seat and will most likely not be able to change it. Usually what happens is that we swap seats amongst ourselves once we ve checked in and been through immigration. COMPRESSION & TRAVEL I have posted all of you a pair of compression tights and compression socks. AIS physiologist, Peta Forsyth, has prepared a one page documents on some travel basics. Peta recommends that you wear your compression socks during and post international travel to assist with travel fatigue. A copy of this document can also be found on the AA CYG portal page. We will talk to you more about travel strategies at the Gold Coast camp.

3 PRE DEPARTURE CAMP GOLD COAST (Friday 14 Sunday 16 July) Commonwealth Games Australia are bringing together the whole Commonwealth Youth Games Team (all sports) for a camp on the Gold Coast before we depart for the Bahamas. The idea of this camp is to allow the Australian Team to meet and build a team atmosphere before we travel to the Games. We are yet to receive a schedule for this camp, however you can expect the following: Competition uniform fitting Casual and presentation uniform exchanges (if required) 2 x training opportunities (Friday & Saturday) Education sessions (recovery, travelling smart, what to expect etc.) You may have noticed that our international flight departs Brisbane airport at 10:00am on Sunday 16 July. For us to make this flight, expect to be getting up at 4:30am on Sunday morning. UNIFORMS As mentioned previously, team uniform will be issued at the camp on the Gold Coast. All team members are required to wear their uniform at all times during the games. Therefore, minimal casual clothes need to be packed. Athletes will receive ample uniform including: Presentation Wear Village Wear Training Wear Competition Wear Tracksuit jacket Hoodie T-Shirts Singlet (m/f) Tracksuit pants Vest Singlets Split Shorts (m/f) Polos Rain Jacket Shorts Short Tights (m/f) Shorts Cotton T-shirts Short tights Crop Top (f) Cargo shorts Briefs (f) Hot Pants (f) Footwear & Accessories Luggage bag Cap Runners Sweat Bands Backpack Towel Socks (crew & ankle) LAUNDRY A free of charge laundry service will be available for athletes and team staff at the team hotel in Nassau. Please keep this in mind when you are packing you bags.

4 WHAT TO BRING I will send out a packing list with the last newsletter (early July), however this should give you a bit of an idea what you ll need to bring; Toiletries / medication Pyjamas Underwear Entertainment (ipad, laptop, kindle, charges, adapter etc.) Bathers Thongs / slides (these are not to be worn outside the hotel) Special food o If you always eat the same thing every morning before competition, it would be a good idea to pack enough for the morning of your competition in the Bahamas. o Anything else you can t live without eg. Vegemite, sustagen etc. Athletics gear o Spikes /competition shoes o Competition socks (you can wear your own or the CGA issued ones) o Runners (the issued runners must be worn during travel and presentation; however, you are welcome to wear your own to the track etc.) o Spiky ball / foam roller (if you use these) o Compression tights & socks Please note, you will be required to train and compete in CGA issued gear, however you may wear your own shoes & socks. All of this should be packed into a small duffle bag or backpack. This bag will then be packed into your team issue luggage bag when you depart the Gold Coast. The photos below are the actual bag and uniform you will be receiving. This will give you an idea of how much space is left in the bag. You are welcome to wear whatever you like on the way over to the Gold Coast (I suggest comfortable clothes and runners).

5 PROBIOTICS AIS Sports Dietician, Chris Fonda spoke at the recent U19 camp about the use of probiotics in the lead up to international travel. Please see below some information: What are they? Live microbial food supplements (Lactobacillus acidophilus & Bifidobacterium bifidum) Why should I take them? Enhance immune system Reduction of GI symptoms Reduction in severity and duration of respiratory illness Reduced risk of URIT by 27% When should I take them? 1 capsule daily for 14 days (2 weeks) prior to travel Further information on probiotics can be found on the AA CYG information page: Performance/Able-Bodied/Team-Information/Commonwealth-Youth-Games/Team-Info MEALS Food service at the dining halls will be served in a buffet style manner. Food will be labelled with contents for nutritional knowledge, allergy alerts and cultural sensitivities. Halal and vegetarian diets will be catered for. Pre-packed lunches and dinners will be available for those who are unable to return to the Team hotels for lunch and dinner. DRINKING WATER Athletes are strongly advised to consume bottled water only. Bottled water, stored in fridges, will be provided at all Games Venues and Team hotels. We recommend you brush your teeth with bottled water also, to avoid any chance of getting sick. Wi-Fi Wi-Fi internet access is available free of charge in the Breezes and Melia hotels. Please remember that all internet access is to be used for social media, , browsing websites, but not for the use of downloading large files. SPECTATOR TICKETS Tickets will be made available for purchase through an online portal and box offices at the various venues. The online portal is currently not available at the time of this newsletter was published.
