On board your small ship, which holds a maximum of 74 passengers, visit the secluded fjords and channels where large cruise ships simply can t go. Hug the shoreline for close-up views of the wildlife. The Captain has the freedom to cut the engines, slow down and linger so you can watch for foraging bears or frolicking whales. Board your ship in Sitka and set sail for the whale rich waters of Icy Strait. Anchor in remote waters, lower the kayaks or enjoy an intertidal walk with your guides. In Glacier Bay National Park, be awed by hues of glacier blue and the calving glaciers. The mineral wealth of the Yukon has been known since the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890 s but it has largely remained an unspoiled wilderness where there is an abundance of alpine-fed lakes, wild rivers, white-capped mountains, tundra and boreal forest. You will discover the fascinating history of the Klondike gold rush. Between 1896 and 1899, 100,000 prospectors arrived in Skagway. Because of the harsh terrain and even harsher weather, it took them a year to reach the Klondike, a long and arduous journey. Many died and many had their dreams dashed. We will follow the route of these prospectors before crossing back into Alaska and finishing our journey in Fairbanks. Then later I learned how the ice melt gave rise to fresh surfaces as it retreats up the valley, and how certain plants form a linear succession on the moraines. Later, as a research student, I studied similar events on Franz Joseph glacier and New Zealand river terraces. You can understand why the possibility of visiting the inside passage of Alaska holds a huge fascination for me. Add to this the Yukon, and the tour becomes an even more compelling adventure. Please contact us. IS THIS TOUR FOR ME? Half of the tour is spent cruising on a small ship which is equipped for active adventure and includes shore excursions and opportunities for walking and kayaking. Being on a ship means that you do not have to participate in these activities and can relax on the boat instead. The crew will brief you about the level of difficulty involved in the activities. On the second half of the tour to the Yukon, there will be visits to the gold field sites which require a moderate amount of walking. Comfortable walking shoes will be needed.

3 THE SHIP - WILDERNESS EXPLORER A small ship offers a very different experience of Alaska than a large cruise ship. This 74-guest expedition vessel has three decks with an upper deck hot tub. The Wilderness Explorer offers guests a casual-style dining experience with open seating that can accommodate all passengers at once. Chefs create exceptional meals using locally sourced fresh ingredients. There are 37 cabins, all with flat-screen TV/DVD, ipod docking station, air conditioning, private bath with shower and view windows. The ship is equipped for active adventure and is outfitted with kayaks, paddle boards, inflatable skiffs, hiking poles, and yoga mats, a hydrophone for listening below the water, and a bow-mounted underwater camera for viewing in-water action. An EZ Dock launch platform allows for easy access into the water. Onboard wellness amenities include fitness equipment and hot tub. Transfer to our airport hotel for the night. Depart early this morning, via Seattle, to arrive in Sitka, Alaska, in the early afternoon. Transfer to our boat berthed in Sitka Sound. Welcome aboard! It s time to relax and meet our crew. As we sail away in Sitka Sound, we will have unmistakable views of Mt. Edgecumbe. Dense Baranof Island forest to one side, small, wild, lesser-known islands on the other. We might even spot black bears loping on shore. Keep watch for sea lions and eagles too. Our first day offers options to drop anchor and find adventure. Slip into a kayak; nose along the shore in a skiff; or head into the Tongass National Forest on foot with our expedition team. When we get back to the boat, the crew will have a treat waiting. The aptly named Narrows squeezes to only 92 metres wide in one spot and a shallow 8 metres deep. The shorelines are close and it s good territory to skiff ashore for a walk into the backcountry. Wind into Neva Strait and watch the scenery change in the late afternoon light. Begin the day on-deck with yoga stretches. Wend along a twisting channel known for dramatic currents. Peril Strait runs 80 km to Salisbury Sound. Meander through glacier-carved fjords along the Chichagof coast. Then stop, and with camera in hand, set off on land and sea explorations. With one of the world s largest populations of bears, it s possible we will see them and we will search for giant trees and tidal pools in the Tongass National Forest. Nearly to the Pacific Ocean, Icy Strait is remote and wild and a good place to spot whales and marine mammals, including sea lions and dolphins. The captain and crew will do their best to get us as close as possible. At 3.3 million acres, this UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve is huge. At Bartlett Cove, a park ranger joins in on our day s exploration and shares the park s history. Orange-beaked puffins, guillemots, marbled murrelets are just a few possible bird sightings. Arriving at South Marble Island, we will also find a colony of sea lions. The glacial silt turns the water a milky white and we will get close to Margerie and Grand Pacific Glaciers, one holding steady, the other retreating. End this very full day with our feet up for the sail into Icy Strait. Lynn Canal or Chatham Strait, our captain makes the call. The guides will lead us on an adventure along the rocky outcroppings. By kayak or paddle board, take in the size of this wilderness. Bald eagles dot the tree tops. Harbour seals bob up and under. Pods of orca skim along the water s surface. We will toast our voyage with a festive Farewell Dinner and a photo journal of our trip. It s our last morning of freshly baked pastries, before disembarking in Juneau where we will board the ferry to Skagway, Alaska s gateway to the Yukon. Upon arrival at the Skagway ferry terminal we will be met by our local tour guide and transferred to our hotel. This morning we board our deluxe coach and transfer to the Skagway Rail Depot. Continue the Trail of `98 over the same mountains that thousands of determined gold seekers scaled on foot in the dead of winter while heading for the Klondike. Then board the historic, narrow-gauge White Pass and Yukon Railway to Fraser. From Fraser another coach ride takes us on a scenic route to Whitehorse.

Learn more about this vast and ancient area at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre. This afternoon we will have time on own to explore this community at our leisure. Board our deluxe coach and journey along the Trail of `98. Pass through the town of Carmacks, an important supply station for gold seekers on their way to the Klondike. Make a photo stop at the Five Finger Rapids, once a major obstacle to the hordes of fortune seekers that passed this way. The next two nights are in Dawson City, the centre of excitement after the first gold strike in the Klondike in 1896, which led to the world's largest gold rush. Admission to Diamond Tooth Gertie s is included tonight for a chance to take in the old -fashioned Can-Can show, or try our luck at one of the gambling tables. Head out to the gold fields to the historic Discovery Claim #1. We will also see the remnants of the gold era in the tailing piles of the old gold dredges and see one of the last of these amazing machines, currently being restored by Parks Canada. Maybe we will pan for gold at historic Claim #33! This afternoon explore Dawson City at leisure - an authentic place of Klondike Goldrush history. The town became famous during the Klondike Gold Rush. Be sure to visit some of the homes listed on the national register, such as Jack London, Robert Service and Pierre Burton, or the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre. The Centre has played a central role in supporting cultural revitalisation and has supported Tr ondëk Hwëch in, first nation citizens, in becoming more aware of their history and traditions. Today s adventure takes us along the Alaska and Top of the World Highways. We ll pass through unique communities such as Chicken (named after Alaska s state bird, Ptarmigan, but residents couldn t spell it and settled on its current name), Tok (Dog Sled Capital of the World) and Delta Junction. Cruise the Chena River aboard a sternwheeler and experience the thrill of river travel. This afternoon enjoy an included city tour featuring the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Centre and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. We will enjoy our last evening together with a Farwell Dinner. Fly early this morning from Fairbanks to San Francisco to connect with our overnight flight to Auckland. We will arrive in Auckland early morning on Monday 9 September. Your Adventure Class rail car has comfortable seating and large picture windows. There is also open air vestibules between carriages for you take in the fresh air. The train also has vista dome cars and a café on board. On arrival, transfer to your hotel for two nights. Take a full day tour in Denali National Park today. You will travel from the park entrance area to the end of the 92 mile park road to the remote Kantishna region. Your naturalist driver/guide will help you search for bears, caribou, Dall sheep, and moose while also explaining the geologic history of the park. On arrival in Kantishna, enjoy a two hour stop for lunch at a park lodge and you may wish to do an optional activity, such as hiking or gold panning. The return trip will give you a different perspective of the park. Have a free morning before boarding the Denali Star Train to Anchorage. This journey will give you great views of Mt McKinley and the amazing countryside before arriving in Anchorage in the early evening. Transfer to your downtown hotel for two nights. A free day in Anchorage with time to follow your own interests. You may wish to visit the Anchorage Museum, the Alaska Heritage Museum or the Alaskan Native Heritage Centre. Day and half day tours are available to further points such as Turnagain Arm to view the bore tides, Beluga Point to see Beluga whales, the Aviation Museum and Lake Hood, a large seaplane airport. A late morning transfer to Anchorage Airport for your flight to Seattle and onwards to San Francisco, to connect with your overnight flight to Auckland. You will arrive at Auckland Airport early this morning.
