Alaska Family Program An In-Depth Look at the Inside Passage With Anthony Leiserowitz Director, Yale Project on Climate Change Communication Aboard the Safari Endeavour July 19 27, 2014

Dear Yale Traveler, Southeast Alaska and the Inside Passage are among my favorite places in the world. As Henry Gannett, a geographer on the famous 1899 Harriman expedition to Glacier Bay, once said: The scenery of Alaska is so much grander than anything else of the kind in the world that, once beheld, all other scenery becomes flat and insipid. Gannet was right Alaska is one of the most remarkable places on earth and I invite you to experience its stunning natural beauty, mist-shrouded fjords, and massive glaciers on this Inside Passage adventure. We will begin in Juneau with a classic Alaskan salmon bake and learn about the town s Alaskan gold rush history. We then take a fun-filled float trip down the Mendenhall River before embarking on the Safari Endeavour for a week of remote wilderness exploration. We will spend two exclusive days in Glacier Bay National Park, navigate the whale-rich waters of Icy Strait, kayak along the waterfall coast of Chichagof Island, learn about Tlingit culture, and search for whales, bears, moose, eagles, and sea lions, before returning to Juneau for flights home. A great team of youth leaders, passionate about Alaska, will conduct fun-filled, interactive learning activities for young travelers, teaching them, for example, how and why glaciers calve, and the different sounds whales make. Throughout the cruise, expert naturalists will lead excursions the entire family will enjoy, as the size and maneuverability of our yacht-like ship will enable us to get up-close views of the glaciers in Glacier Bay and the exceptional wildlife in this special place. The ever-changing land, ocean, and air of Alaska are filled with myriad creatures great and small, where the living histories and cultures of diverse peoples are woven into an awe-inspiring landscape. My family and I can t wait we hope to see you there! To register, please complete the reservation form in this brochure and mail or fax it to Yale Educational Travel. You may also make a secure reservation online at www. YaleEdTravel.org/alaska 14. If you have questions, please call (203) or edtravel@yale.edu. Cheers, Anthony Leiserowitz, PhD School of Forestry & Environmental Studies Yale University

anthony leiserowitz Anthony Leiserowitz is Director of the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication and a research scientist at the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University. Educated at the Michigan State University and the University of Oregon, where he received a PhD in Environmental Science, Studies, and Policy, he is a widely recognized expert on American and international public opinion on global warming. His research investigates the psychological, cultural, political, and geographic factors that drive public environmental perception and behavior. He has conducted survey, experimental, and field research in China, India, the United States (including Alaska), and with the Inupiaq Eskimo of Northwest Alaska. He also conducted the first empirical assessment of worldwide public values, attitudes, and behaviors regarding global sustainability. He has served as a consultant to the John F. Kennedy School of Government (Harvard University), the United Nations Development Program, the Gallup World Poll, the Global Roundtable on Climate Change at the Earth Institute (Columbia University), and the World Economic Forum. alaska14 As you cruise through probably the richest whale waters in Southeast Alaska, keep an eye out for the telltale blow of the humpbacks as they feed in the nutrient-rich waters, and for porpoises, sea lions, and other wildlife. (Cover) Kayaking is ideal for close inspection of remote coastlines in Glacier Bay National Park.

northern fur seals horned puffin learning in progress fascinating fish fireweed flowers bald eagle sea otters Itinerary home / juneau, alaska Saturday, July 19 Arrive in Juneau and check in at the Baranof Hotel, conveniently located in downtown Juneau within walking distance of the waterfront, cruise ship docks, and shopping areas. The hotel s Art Deco public areas feature the original artwork of acclaimed Alaskan artists. Enjoy a welcome dinner featuring a classic Alaskan salmon bake and entertainment. Baranof Hotel (R,D) juneau (embark) Sunday, July 20 This morning take a city tour focused on Juneau s gold-mining history, with visits to historic gold rush sites and a demonstration of gold panning. After lunch enjoy a float trip down the Mendenhall River before embarking on the Safari Endeavour to begin your Alaskan adventure. Safari Endeavour (B,L,D) glacier bay national park Monday & Tuesday, July 21 & 22 Spend two days exploring beautiful Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in the Alaska panhandle west of Juneau. Glacier Bay is a designated wilderness area that covers 4,164 square miles and is both a binational UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve. Tidewater glaciers sweep down massive mountain valleys into the waters of Glacier Bay to create the spectacular scenery of one of the crown jewels in America s national park system. Listen to the thunderous roar of ice crashing into the sea as Grand Pacific and Margerie Glaciers calve huge icebergs into the sea. Paddle a kayak in the quiet of the majestic wilderness. Take a rainforest hike at Bartlett Cover. Keep an eye out for sea lions, mountain goats, sea otters, bears, moose, and eagles at numerous secluded coves around the bay, and for brightly colored puffins and black oystercatchers on South Marble Island. Safari Endeavour (2B,2L,2D) icy strait Wednesday, July 23 Icy Strait separates Chicagof Island from the Alaskan mainland. In these prime whale-rich waters, be on the lookout for humpback whales, porpoises, and sea lions from the bridge, on deck, or in inflatable skiffs and kayaks as naturalist guides offer insights into the surrounding ecosystems and habitats. Close inspection of the rugged and wild coastline may turn up a bear sighting or two. Safari Endeavour (B,L,D) chicagof & baranof island Thursday, July 24 Chicagof and Baranof Islands are part of the Alexander Archipelago, separated from each other by Peril Strait. Cruise along the spectacular waterfall coast of Chicagof Island, enjoying the breathtaking scenery as the Safari Endeavour glides through glacier-carved fjords. Be on the watch for bald eagles flying overhead, as nearby Tongass National Forest provides habitat for the largest population of these magnificent birds in the world. Explore Red Bluff Bay by kayak or skiff and take an intertidal shoreline or forest walk with your guides. Safari Endeavour (B,L,D)

frederick sound Friday, July 25 Lush forest, spectacular views, and wildlife are all part of the experience in Frederick Sound. Due to the abundance of krill, zooplankton, and herring, which thrive in the glacially fed waters of the sound, this is a prime location to observe feeding humpback whales. Other marine mammals that can be spotted in the sound include orcas, Steller sea lions, Dall s porpoises, and harbor seals. The sound is surrounded by craggy snow-covered mountains, and the shoreline is a good place for hikes. Safari Endeavour (B,L,D) view from the safari endeavour s bow glacier bay fords terror & endicott arm Saturday, July 26 Venture into this pristine tidal inlet and fjord, acclaimed as one of Alaska s most beautiful areas. As you glide through Endicott Arm you may find a few seals taking respite on small icebergs called bergy bits. Enjoy a final opportunity to explore by skiff or kayak, followed by a festive farewell dinner. Safari Endeavour (B,L,D) juneau / home Sunday, July 27 Disembark in Juneau and transfer to the airport for flights home. (B) optional extension south-central alaska & denali July 27 August 1, 2014 Pricing and extension details will be sent to confirmed program participants. Marvel at the grand scenery of the Alaskan wilderness as the Safari Endeavour s expert crew guides you to places known only to the locals, and naturalists provide fascinating insights into the many wonders of Glacier Bay National Park. With your family explore remote places and learn about the marine and land animals, birds, geology, and glacier activity in the park. 6 Safari Endeavour The newly refurbished 86-passenger Safari Endeavour is an ideal vessel for families wishing to explore Alaska s Inside Passage. The five stateroom categories can accommodate singles, doubles, or triples depending on which category is selected. All cabins have view windows or portholes, private bath with shower, flat-screen TV/DVD, and ipod docking station. The ambience aboard ship is casual elegance with a full menu of upscale amenities. Features include an intimate wine bar and spa area including two hot tubs, sauna, fitness equipment, yoga classes, and massage suite (complete with a complimentary massage). The Safari Endeavour s three decks provide ample outside viewing opportunities and relaxing public spaces for gathering with new-found friends. The EZ Dock launch platform makes launching a kayak or stand-up paddle board and boarding a skiff a smooth process. Onboard adventure equipment includes kayaks and standup paddle boards, inflatable skiffs, hiking poles, yoga mats, and hydrophones for listening to below surface sounds. What to Expect Because southeast Alaska is located in the heart of the world s largest temperate rainforest, and is warmed by ocean currents, summers are mild and rain is common. Daytime temperatures usually range between 55 and 65 F, but can be as high as 80 F. Evening lows are generally between 40 and 50 F. Should you be tempted to take a polar bear plunge, water temperatures are around the mid 40 s to the low 50 s F. You should expect chilly winds near glaciers and on deck when the ship is under way, and rain, mist, or cloudy conditions are possibilities everywhere. What the locals call cloud failure a spell of sunshine happens occasionally. During the summer months, daylight extends well into evening at these latitudes. This is a moderately strenuous adventure, that at times is physically demanding depending on your choice of activities. Participants must be physically fit, active, and in good health. Group Size This program is limited to 35 participants. Airfare U.S. domestic and international airfare is not included in the program cost. Round-trip economy-class airfare between New York and Juneau is approximately $650 per person as of August 2013 and is subject to change without notice. In order to give you as much flexibility as possible with the variety of air travel options, you are free to make your own air arrangements for this program.
