9 Departure Whitehorse Departure Whitehorse Inuvik Arctic Winter Explorer Ice Road to the Arctic Sea 8 days guided winter adventure tour in Yukon and NWT Skill Level: Beginner Join us as we travel overland from the Pacific to the Arctic, along snow covered highways and roadways built of ice along ancient wildlife corridors, and traditional trading routes of First Nations traders - later used by Klondike Gold Rush prospectors and NWMP patrolmen. The route offers some of the greatest geographic diversity in the country; the Tombstone Mountains in the central Yukon are among the youngest mountain ranges in North America, while the low rolling Ogilvie s with their naked spines were not glaciated during the last Ice Age, and thus are among the oldest. North of the Ogilvie Mountains, the landscape gradually flattens to low tundra and just after crossing the Arctic Circle the Richardson Mountains, the Northern-most extension of the Rocky Mountains, come into view. From there, the roadway will begin it s descent into the impressive Mackenzie River Delta; 12th largest in the world, to arrive at Inuvik, known as the Place of Man. We will travel to the isolated community of Aklavik, once the region s administrative centre, locals were slated to be moved to Inuvik, but refused hence their motto, Never say die., on the Arctic coast, accessible only by a winter ice-road constructed out of the frozen ice of the Mackenzie River and the Arctic Ocean. Exploring this remote village we will visit the grave of the Mad Trapper, the mysterious backwoods killer who led Mounties on one of Canada s greatest manhunts. The tour finishes with a exciting excursions to the Inuvialuit village of Tuktoyaktuk, on the Arctic coast, where we learn about the local history and culture. Dates (Whitehorse - Inuvik) (Inuvik - Whitehorse) (Whitehorse - Inuvik) (Inuvik - Whitehorse) 8 days / 7 nights 5-12 participants per tour Double Room: 3, Single Room: 4, Triple Room: 3, Quad Room: 3, Extending your stay? Ask us about our great pre and post tour accommodation rates exclusively for our guests. We also offer a great selection of addon tours to make your vacation with us even more complete. Trip Itinerary Arctic Winter Explorer : The tour itinerary is in reverse every second departure. Day 01: Arrive Whitehorse. Meet and greet and transfer to your downtown hotel. En route, your guide will offer a city highlight tour that includes SS Klondike National Historic Site, the Old Log Church and the Log Cabin Skyscraper. You ll meet your fellow travellers and your guide will review the itinerary and your equipment at our group meeting this afternoon. The remainder of the afternoon and evening is free to explore the city and do any last minute shopping. Accommodation: Whitehorse Day 02: Whitehorse - Dawson City Prior to the late 1950 s, the only way to travel to Dawson City in summer was on a majestic paddlewheeler like the SS Klondike. Today, we ll cover the 550km distance in just a few hours. Our route today takes us through the heart of the Yukon interior more or less along the Yukon River valley. We ll stop for a coffee in the morning at Braeburn Lodge, famous for its massive cinnamon buns, then continue northbound on the Klondike Highway passing through several small native villages and settlements including, Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing. Near Carmacks, the road offers great views of famous Five Finger Rapids Map ALASKA Aklavik Eagle Plains Dempster Highw. Dawson City Tuktoyaktuk Tombstone Teritorial Park YUKON N.W.T. Inuvik Fort McPherson ARCTIC CIRCLE Whitehorse 9

10 CATALOGUE RETAIL CATALOG 2015/2016 WINTER 2018/2019 and about an hour outside of Dawson, we ll stop at the Tintina Trench overlook for views of the expansive Yukon interior with the Ogilvie Mountains beyond that we ll pass through the day after tomorrow. After check-in, we ll have a bite to eat, and then we ll keep an eye out for the Northern Lights, which can often be seen right over the town. Accommodation: Dawson Day 03: Dawson City Home to the world s greatest Gold Rush, some 50,000 gold seekers arrived here in 1898 making Dawson City the largest town west of Winnipeg and North of Seattle (USA) at that time. The entire community is now a national historic site, and the romance of the Old West can be felt on every corner. Dawson s unpaved streets and wooden boardwalks are still roamed by miners, hunters and trappers. Parks Canada has restored many of the original buildings including the Palace Grand Theatre, the Commissioner s Residence and the cabins of Jack London and Robert Service s cabin, among many others. We ll travel up Bonanza Creek road to the actual claim where gold was discovered in Discovery Claim is located near the impressive Dredge #4 National Historic Site and we ll stop for a photo here as well. In the evening you will have the chance to discover Dawson City s small but authentic bar scene and you will find many longtime residence who can tell you more tales of the far north. Accommodation: Dawson Day 04: Dawson City - Eagle Plains We ll get an early start today. The Dempster is one of the truly great Canadian roadways. Completed only in the late 1970 s, the Dempster is still the only fully public road in North America to cross the Arctic Circle. Today s drive is considered most scenic; Tombstone Territorial Park encompasses the jagged peaks to the West that give the park its name and further along, the Ogilvie Mountains offer superb scenery and stunning vistas. Wildlife is often spotted along the roadsides, so keep a good watch for foxes, the occasional wolf and caribou. We ll stop for a picnic lunch at a creek-side campground, where gray-jay s, or camp-robbers as they re known locally will keep us company always happy to help with leftovers. As we arrive at Eagle Plains in the late afternoon/early evening, the modest hotel, fuel station, and highway maintenance station the only civilization for approximately 300km in either direction - feels like an oasis! Accommodation: Eagle Plains Day 05: Eagle Plains - Inuvik Departing Eagle Plains, our first stop is at the Arctic Circle crossing, where we ll enjoy a celebratory glass of champagne to commemorate this special occasion. After crossing a mountain range and two rivers (the Richardson s and the Mackenzie and Peel Rivers), we ll visit the First Nations community of Fort MacPherson. The famed Lost Patrol, found after they perished by RNWMP Corporal Dempster - for whom the highway is named - is laid to rest here. A former Hudson Bay trading post, some native elders still wonder the village in Hudson Bay print dresses. Inuvik is a relatively young community with an ancient history. The Canadian government commissioned the building of the town in the 1950 s when it became apparent that the nearby traditional village of Aklavik, was slowly sinking into the delta. Inuvialuit people (Inuit, once referred to pejoratively as Eskimos) were also moved down from various points on the Arctic coast. Appropriately, the name Inuvik means Place of Man in the Inuvialuit language. We ll take a short tour of the village on the way to hotel and you ll have time to explore the town on foot in the evening. Accommodation: Inuvik Day 06: Inuvik Aklavik - Tuktoyaktuk Today will be memorable; we ll travel by ice-road across the expansive Mackenzie River delta towards the Arctic coast. At the rivers entrance into the Arctic Ocean, the road turns northeast and travels along the coastline of Arctic Ocean toward the village of Tuk as it is known by residents. Not far from town, you ll see the first of several pingos. These are mountains literally made of ice; heaved-up season after season with the annual freeze and thaw. The tallest is over 100m! We will be met by local guides who will take us on a tour of their unique village. Stops along the way include the historic Lady of Lourdes schooner and some of Tuk s famous community buildings such as sod houses, churches and the community freezer ; a hollowed out section of permafrost located deep underground. You ll also see the Northern Early Warning site (formerly DEW Line) and even get a chance to dip your toe in the Arctic Ocean! You ll also be invited to a local resident s home for a glimpse at home-life in a northern community. Accommodation: Tuktoyaktuk Day 07: Tuktoyaktuk to Inuvik Return to Inuvik. 11 Departure Whitehorse Yukon Quest Dog sledding Follow the toughest race 8 days guided winter tour around the Yukon Quest in Yukon Skill Level: Beginner Travel to the Yukon this winter for an unforgettable Northern adventure! Experience the North s most exciting time of year and its coolest activities for yourself including dog sledding and Northern Lights viewing. Designed around the running of the famous Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, considered the toughest sled dog race in the world competitors travel 1600km from Whitehorse to Fairbanks in as little as 10 days! during our Yukon Quest Tour package you ll experience all the behind the scenes race action as we join the teams on their mandatory 36 hour layover in Dawson City - home of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, the greatest the world has ever seen - before travelling onwards to Fairbanks. While the race is still on we ll enjoy days of dogsledding ourself. We ll learn how to work with a team of sleddogs while they ll teach us the magic of travelling through the snow covered, northern backcountry. Trip Itinerary Yukon Quest Dog sledding Day 1: Arrive Whitehorse. The adventure begins! Arrive Whitehorse. Your guide will meet you at the airport and provide a transfer downtown. On the way to the hotel, the guide will point out some of the city s main attractions including the SS Klondike National Historic Site, the Yukon Visitor Centre, the Old Log Church and the Log Cabin Skyscraper. The Yukon s capital city, Whitehorse is Canada s largest north of the 60th parallel. With its numerous café s and galleries and wel travelled, well-educated population, Whitehorse has a surprisingly cosmopolitan feel. But the real beauty of Whitehorse is its proximity to some of the country s most beautiful natural landscapes, literally just minutes from downtown! Conditions permitting, we ll have a chance at your first views of our stunning Northern Lights before bed. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 2: Whitehorse. Yukon Quest start! After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we ll walk to the Yukon Quest start line. You can feel the excitement in the air as you approach the start line. The first teams begin arriving in the early morning to prepare for departure, and the teams are staked out according to their start positions. Spectators have the chance to meet the mushers as they load the sleds and prepare to depart. And of course, you ll get up close and personal, with the real starts of the show, the 14 delightful Alaskan huskies that comprise each team. Though teams pass through several check points during the race, the Yukon Quest is much more of a test of wilderness survival than Alaska s Iditarod sled dog race. Teams are required to spend several days between check-points without aid or re-supply, and the Yukon Quest is considered a much more difficult event than the Alaskan race. The dog s excitement to be underway is obvious as the teams are hooked up and led to the start line; its all the handlers can do to hold them back! Afterwards, we ll visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve for views of the many large mammal species that inhabit the Yukon including moose, caribou, musk-ox, elk, mule deer, Dall s sheep and mountain goats! Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 3: Whitehorse. Dog sledding After watching world-class Mushers starting the race, today you ll get to experience the world of White Fang and Buck for yourself! We ll travel to a scenic alpine valley located just a short distance outside the city for an introduction to the exciting adventure of dog sledding. This area is a favourite backcountry location for local residents; its stunning scenery provides easy access to some of the most beautiful wilderness in the Yukon. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 4: Whitehorse. Dog sledding You ll spend the days mushing your own team of Alaskan husky along a winter trail. The swish of the sled s runners and the panting of the wonderful huskies and the sound of your own heart beating with excitement are the only sounds you ll hear as we leave civilization behind for the Yukon wilds. We ll stop for a trail-side lunch cooked over the open fire before returning to the trailhead. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 5: Whitehorse-Dawson City. Klondike Ho! We ll leave the Yukon s capital city behind for the wilds of the Yukon interior today. As we travel the North Klondike Highway northbound, you ll begin to get a sense of the sheer size and grandeur of the Yukon. At half the size of Ontario, or roughly the same size as California, the Yukon s total population is only 36,000 people. Breathtaking doesn t describe the vastness or the beauty of the Yukon s wilderness! Our route roughly follows the Yukon River valley and takes us through a few small settlements and villages including Braeburn, Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing before the Ogilvie Mountains come into view. The road then drops down to the famous Klondike River Valley that spawned the Klondike Gold Rush of Still considered the greatest gold rush the world has ever seen, the gold discovery near Dawson City in 1896 drew more than 50,000 people to the Yukon in 1898, making Dawson City the largest city west of Winnipeg (Canada) and north of Seattle (USA)! As a national historic site, Dawson City today still retains its turn-of-the-century pioneer feel. Saloons with batwing doors and buildings with wooden facades, wrapped with wooden boar walks, line un-paved streets. Straight out of the Old West, this is the Yukon you imagined! We ll take a short city highlight tour on arrival and point out some of Dawson City s most famous locations including the Palace Grand Theatre, the former Territorial Legislature (now housing the Dawson City Museum), the Commissioners Residence, the SS Keno and the homes of famous Klondike authors, Robert Service, Pierre Berton and Jack London. We ll also stop by the official Yukon Quest check point to check on the expected arrival times of the first teams arriving this evening. The town s fire siren will announce the first team in, and everyone rushes down to the checkpoint to see who has arrived. To add to the excitement, the first team to arrive is given several ounces of gold by Dawson City as a reward. Overnight in a hotel in Dawson City. Day 6: DAwson. Experience the Yukon Quest! Today we ll experience the relaxed pace of Dawson City while we wait for the first team to arrive. Spectators will have the chance to meet the mushers and their handlers as they load the sleds and prepare to depart. Yukon Quest teams will be arriving throughout the day, providing many more opportunities for great Quest photos. In between, we ll visit some of Dawson s most interesting attractions to gain more insight into the Klondike Gold Rush history and the people, history and culture of the local Trondek Hwechen (Han) First Nation. Teams will continue to arrive throughout the day and into the evening, occasionally under the soaring Northern Lights, making for a memorable evening. Overnight in a hotel in Dawson City. Day 7: Dawson City Whitehorse. On the road again! Following breakfast, we ll return to Whitehorse, once again along the scenic North Klondike Highway. During this southbound trip, we ll stop by the Five Finger Rapids overlook for views of the 4 impressive chunks of rock in the middle of the river that gave river travelers and paddle-wheelers some difficulty during the gold rush. The focus is to get our guests to feel comfortable on their skis and ensuring they have the required technique before heading out on the tour on set tracks in a pristine setting with a back country feel. Full day tour includes skiing at Mendenhall Landing, a 45 minute drive west on the Alaska Highway from Whitehorse. A day pack with camera and a few spare clothes is all you need. Our destination is a wall tent camp nestled on a bank in the pine forest facing the sun and the mountains. After appr. 2 to 3 hours at a leisurely pace we will arrive at our lunch camp.
