3 DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT 2017 was a year dedicated to closing projects and assignments from previous years. Projects with beautiful results, projects that contributed not only to our objectives, but also to having ProPark more present in the life of our fellow citizens from Brașov. Our financial resources decreased significantly this year, but not our motivation and enthusiasm. We continued working with our enlarged team of trainers and consultants, looked into new topics to share with our beneficiaries, like the topic of landscape scale conservation for the conservation of large carnivores and supporting local people in protected areas to develop and promote small businesses. Together with our strategic partner, the Foundation Conservation Carpathia, we initiated the development of a Protected Areas Strategy proposal for Romania, promoting it at the main protected area event, the annual Protected Area Gala, initiated and organized by ProPark. The third edition of the Gala brought together key people from the protected area management system and from the biodiversity conservation world, providing a great opportunity for experience exchange and for working together on the future Protected Area Strategy. This year our team, supported actively by the Board, started to look into possibilities to diversify our fundraising activities. We hope to have opportunities to develop our capacities related to this topic, for a more secure future for ProPark and for the benefit of our target audience and of protected areas in Romania was the year of anxious search for new beginnings. Anxious both because of the difficult environment for conservation and NGOs in Romania, and anxious due to the eagerness to see if our initiatives for new projects will be successful. We are looking forward for new projects, new resources and successful strategic partnerships in for 2018 and for the coming years, to continue pursuing our mission in a safe environment. 4 PROJECTS Nature and Traditions in the support of Sustainable Development Nature and Traditions in the support of Sustainable Development project targeted its activities towards the administrators and custodians of the protected areas and especially towards the key persons in charge with the community outreach responsibilities. Through this project, we have created a participative framework focusing on the promotion and visibility improvement of the protected areas at a national level but also of the products and services that are being produces within their local communities. 8 PROJECTS Brasov, a city in the middle of nature "Brasov, a city in the middle of nature" project continued ProPark programme for promoting Brașov county local protected areas through specific communication activities: Protected Areas Week, guided visits, debates, workshops for youngsters, a nature documentary. This project was awarded with "Protected Areas Prize" by Partnership Foundation and Mol Romania. 10 CONSULTANCY Pathways to professionalisation: Developing individual and organizational capacities for protected area management. Lessons from Eastern Europe Although human resources are paramount for the success of nature conservation, the development of individuals and organisations capacities are not yet a priority in most of the countries worldwide. This publication explains briefly: what do capacity at different levels and professionalisation mean in the context of protected area management, how to develop a national plan for the coherent and unitary development of capacities and professionalization and which can be the key solutions and directions for action. 11 CAPACITY BUILDING Propark is constantly focusing on defining and developing the required combination of skills, knowledge and attitude for each protected area category of staff, in order for them to perform at their maximum potential. And we are always designing innovative channels to better deliver our services : conducting needs assessment projects in Romania or abroad, initiating work-groups and public debates on the most important and most recent topics, implementing e-learning platforms for a wide variety of trainees, from eminent students to high level professionals, for example those in the field of law, organizing face2face training sessions, in the middle of our beautiful nature, for specialists in protected areas or for the employees of other organizations and companies working in this activity field, or designing memorable follow-up events, contests, motivational seminars and conferences or galas. 12 PROPARK ADVENTURE ProPark Adventure Race is a combination of one or more endurance tests that may include: tourist orientation, mountain running, mountain biking, kayaking, speleology, sports orientation, climbing and surprise trials. In our adventure race are invited mixt teams formed by 3 man and 1 woman and the map is handed to the teams one day before the start The route is chosen by teams, which are required to pass through all the checkpoints established by the organizers.
