2 The West Glacier area of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area is at the end the Skater s Cabin Road, accessed by streets maintained by the City and Borough of Juneau. The West Glacier area serves as a starting point for various recreation activities accessing federally managed lands. The project was designed to increase safety, accessibility, capacity and reduce conflict between guide/outfitter operations providing for a better guided experience, while adding to year-round recreation opportunities for local residents. 5/3/2018 2
3 Federal Lands Access Funds $559,578 Transportation Alternatives Funds $367,135 FS Commercial Fees (MATCH) $128,973 Total project cost: $1,055,124 Destination: Mendenhall Glacier Recreation area The TNF was awarded a FLAP grant, they partnered with WFL to execute the project. A FS employee attended the Trails Conference funding track (2015), and heard about grant funding through the Transportation Alternatives Program and were able to prepare a grant submission for the remaining improvements to the Extension project (awarded 2016). DOT&PF transferred the TAP funds over to WFL to execute the project as a whole. Local commercial tour companies donated materials as well as the local construction company awarded the job. Both local companies came with experience in using natural materials, some even from the trail site. The project was completed in late 2017.
