17 The First Protest! Letters to the Editor (Herald) 21/07/1916 The Calder Street Baths Sir,- In common with many more in Govanhill I beg leave, through your columns, to protest against Bailie Drummond s reckless expenditure of the ratepayer s money. Since entering the Town Council, I am sorry to say, economy has not been one of is virtues- on more than one occasion he has given his vote in favour of unnecessary expense. The baths in Govanhill are of his creation, the building of which will cost the ratepayers anything between fifty and sixty thousand pounds; they are quite unnecessary in a district such as Govanhill, the dwelling-houses being all more or less fitted up with modern sanitary arrangements. In addition to the above he now comes forward and gives his vote for another high-paid police official, which saddles the ratepayers with 450 a year. Surely at a time such as this when there are so many of our men engaged in war the City s crime does not justify appointing of another high-paid official, and it might have been left over until this was is finished. Credit is due to Mr R. K. Paterson and the other writers in bringing this matter before Press readers. In Closing, I would suggest that the Govanhill Ward Committee might convene a meeting of the ratepayers at an early date to protest against Bailie Drummond s reckless expenditure of the ratepayers money, - I am, etc., Economy. Cathcart Road, Govanhill.
18 THE PURPOSE OF THE TRUST (and the The Emporium) Reopen the Baths and contribute to the social, cultural and built regeneration of Govanhill as a community on the Southside.
