On arrival in Litochoro you will meet your Mt Olympus guide and have a group briefing. On arrival in Chania you will meet with your Crete guide and will have another group briefing. DAY 1 24 September Arrive Athens Arrive Athens. You will be met and transferred to your hotel if arriving on recommended group flight (Group flight details to be advised). The group hotel is located in the district of Makriyanni, a short walk from the Acropolis and Old Town of the Plaka. Evening at leisure. Overnight Hotel Philippos (or similar). meals: NIL DAY 2 25 Sept - Transfer to Litochoro and walk to walk to Refuge Petrostrouga (1940m), approx 3-4 hours walking In the morning make your own way from the hotel to the train station for your train to Litochoro (departure time & details provided in your final documents). On arrival you will meet your guide and transfer to Gkortsia (Diastayrwsh) from where you begin your hike (1100m). The route from Gkortsia to Petrostrougka Refuge is a popular route through a thick forest of pine, beech and fir trees. We arrive at our refuge in the late afternoon. Overnight Refuge Petrostrouga(1940m). meals: B,D DAY 3 26 Sept - Petrostrouga Refuge (1940m) Refuge Ch. Kakkalos (2700m), approx 4-6 hours walking This morning we ascend a zig zag path that will bring us to the Plateau of the Muses where a small and friendly refuge will accommodate us for the night. After lunch we will climb a small peak just above our refuge named Profitis Ilias and Toumba where you will gain superb views of the Mt Olympus summits its deep gorges (2 hour round trip). Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website trip grading MODERATE CHALLENGING GRADE 4 This trip can be divided into two levels. The first part on Mt Olympus is moderate to challenging. The second part on Crete is less demanding and is graded moderate accordingly. The trek on Mount Olympus is graded moderate to challenging, with two of the 4 days being quite demanding. The summit days require good endurance where some rock scrambling is required. Weather can also be variable and you need to be well prepared for all weather conditions. The walk through Ennipeas Gorge is a long day, 7 9 hours walking with many ups and downs. The Mount Olympus Trek is not to be underestimated. It is tough and there are many exposed sections, especially on summit day. The trek to the summit will require rock scrambling and some dexterity. If ascending the Main Summit, safety lines will be set and you will be issued with a helmet and harness. DAY 4 27 Sept - Mt Olympus Summit/s Refuge A (Spilios Agapitos) (2100m), approx 6-8 hours walking This morning we ascend the main path and cross a spectacular precipice under the summit of Stefani (the throne of Zeus). Depending on group and weather conditions we will either climb Skala (2882m) and then cross a narrow ridge to climb to the summit of Skolio (2911m). This will entail 4-5 hours of walking on narrow paths with some scrambling involved (altitude gain +800m), OR, if weather permits and there is no snow, we will ascend to the main summit of Mytikas (2917m), Greece s highest peak. If we ascend Mytikas you will be issued with a helmet and harness. Should the Guide feel it necessary for the safety of the group, or individuals, he/she will set safety lines for the group to travel on. If the Mountain Gods are shining, and good conditions prevail (weather, trail, group and at your Guide s discretion), our aim will be to complete all 3 peaks. To get to the main summit you follow a narrow gorge, involving some rock scrambling. Following our summit/s we follow a path to Refuge A (2100m), commonly referred to as the balcony of Greece. Rest for the remainder of the day to prepare for another big walk tomorrow. Overnight Refuge A (2100m) DAY 5 28 Sept - Refuge A - Prionia - Ennipeas Gorge - Litochoro We have an easy descent this morning to Prionia (Prionia is one of the highest points accessible by car). We continue to the stunning Enippeas Gorge. You pass a cave chapel, the monastery of St. Dionysus, as well as some beautiful river pools which hopefully you might have a chance to swim in! Today is a challenging day however the diverse geological features, the small lakes with crystal clear water and the sheer mountains make this an utterly rewarding trek and a great finish to your climb on Mt Olympus. After approx 7 hours, the gorge opens up on the outskirts of Litochoro where you will be transferred to your hotel to freshen up before heading out for a celebratory meal at one of Litochoro s local restaurants. Overnight Litochoro. meals: B,L DAY 6 29 Sept - Transfer to Thessaloniki. Fly to Venetian styled city of Chania, Crete. This morning you will take a private transfer from your hotel to the airport in Thessaloniki. Your flight to Chania departs at 1400 and you will arrive around 1515 (Important Note: You will need to book this flight yourself. It is not included in the trip cost. When the trip has reached minimum numbers and has been confirmed by WWOT/WE, we will reconfirm these group flight details with you. The reason we have not included this flight in the overall trip cost is that many of the internal flights in Europe on low cost carriers need to be booked and paid for by credit card. Often at the time of check-in, you need to show proof of purchase with the same credit card. We cannot access these low cost fares via our Reservations System, thus, by not including, we are giving you the opportunity to purchase the best fare at the lowest possible price). On arrival you will be transferred from Chania airport to your hotel. The historic old town, once occupied by the Venetians and the Turks, is set on and around the hill of Kasteli overlooking the sea. Throughout the walled town there are numerous vestiges of past civilizations including many Byzantine churches. Elaborately decorated Venetian manors coexist with Turkish styled houses in the narrow lanes. Make sure you allow time to soak up the atmosphere around the charming Venetian harbour or the traditional market. In the evening you will meet your guide and group for a briefing, before dinner at a traditional tavern for your first taste of Cretan cuisine. Overnight Chania. meals: B,D DAY 7 30 Sept - Walk through the Agia Irini gorge to the seaside village of Sougia (4hrs) After breakfast, you will be transferred to the entrance of Agia Irini gorge, for your first hike. Agia Irini gorge trail follows a quiet path next to a stream, surrounded by pine and chestnut trees. Follow the trail towards Sougia, a beautiful little village on the southern coast of Crete where you will have the opportunity to enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear waters of Mediterranean Sea. 6 On Crete, the walking is graded moderate with 2 to 6 hours walking each day over hilly to steep terrain.. There are numerous ups and downs in any hike in Crete and and your preparation should include climbing and descending steps. A good level of fitness is required. As with all of our trips it is important that you are well prepared. We suggest that you undertake regular exercise swimming, cycling, stair walking and jogging, two to three times a week for three months prior to your departure. adventure travel By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. DAY 8 1 October - Through the gorge of Selinou to the ancient city of Lissos (3hrs) A cultural day walk through the beautiful gorge of Selinou, thick with brilliant pink oleanders and carob trees, to the ancient city of Lissos. Lissos was an important center of hydrotherapy in ancient years, which flourished in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine era. Here you will visit a well-preserved temple with mosaic floor dedicated to the God of medicine Asklipios and explore this interesting city. After a dip in the cove return to Sougia. DAY 9 2 October - Ascend Mt Gigilos (2080m), overnight Omalos Plateau (6hrs) A transfer by mini-bus brings us to the entrance of Samaria gorge at Omalos plateau, from where you will climb up Mt Gigilos (2080m). This is where the wild goats of Crete (Kri-kri) live as well as some of the most rare and almost extinct wild birds of Europe, such as the griffon vulture and the lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus). Towards the peak there are some points where you may need to use your hands to climb (easy scramble, nothing technical). The summit provides spectacular views in all directions. You descend by the same route and you spend the night at a family owned hotel in Omalos plateau. DAY 10 3 October - Walk Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe to Agia Roumeli (6hrs) Leave your luggage at the hotel s lobby to be transferred by boat to Agia Roumeli village, at the foot of Samaria gorge. A short drive by mini-bus from the hotel will take us to Xiloscalo at the entrance of Samaria gorge. Samaria is the longest gorge in Europe and one of the most beautiful. You walk on a good path through a shady pine forest and beside a flowing stream. Here you may see the wild goats of Crete (Kri-kri). You reach the small village of Agia Roumeli for overnight accommodation, where you can relax and enjoy a swim. DAY 11 4 October - Coastal walk to the blue and white village of Loutro (6hrs) Leave your luggage in your hotel s lobby to be transferred by boat to Loutro. Today s walk leads us along a beautiful sea walk (coastal path) on the Mediterranean Sea, alternating on sand and shingles next to the sea and about 50m above the sea level in pine forest and bushy areas. On the way to Loutro you pass the picturesque St Paul s chapel, which was built on the sand next to the sea. After a refreshing break at Marmara beach, you arrive at the small port of Loutro with its magnificent village decorated with blue and white houses. Spend the next 2 nights in Loutro. DAY 12 5 October - Walk through Arathena gorge or coastal trail to Anopoli and return to Loutro (6hrs) Ascend an ancient path until you reach Anopolis village, a historic area from where the revolution against the Turks began in Here you can see authentic Cretans with their traditional costumes. From Agia Ekaterini s church, just outside Anopolis, you have the chance to enjoy the wonderful view to the Libyan Sea and the south coast of Crete. Visit Anopoli s square, relax at the coffee shop with the locals and return the same way to Loutro. For strong hikers we recommend you continue and cross Arathena s gorge that ends at Marmara beach and return to Loutro by following the E4 path. This big loop offers unforgettable scenery alternating between mountain trail, spectacular gorge and coastal path. Overnight Loutro. DAY 13 6 October - Walk to Hora Sfakion and return to Chania (2hrs), trip concludes For the last day there are two ways to reach the village of Hora Sfakion, from where you return to Chania. Either a 2 hour hike along the coastal path that crosses Sweet Water beach (there are many fresh water springs, coming out of the pebble beach), or a 15 minute boat-ride from Loutro to Sfakia World Expeditions Travel Group - Kate Harper 11/23/2015 1:11:54 PM

7 The trip ends at Chania where you can take a walk through Chania s market. If you choose to hike to Hora Sfakion, you will need to start your hike early in order collect your luggage from the boat at Hora Sfakion. Group return transfer to Chania airport where the trip concludes. meals: B This itinerary is subject to change with any change in Community regulations as well as Governmental changes and natural circumstances beyond our control. climate The Mt Olympus massif is 18km from the coast, giving the impression that it rises from the sea. On the lower slopes, you can expect a Mediterranean climate, whereas on on the upper slopes you need to be prepared for all weather conditions including sun, rain, wind and snow. Summer temperatures on Mt Olympus can vary between 0 20 degrees celsius, though wind chill can make these temperatures seem colder. Crete summers are hot. From late June to September, highs of 35 degrees Celsius are common. dietary requirements Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut free or allergen free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self administering these medications. accommodation on the trip On Mt Olympus you will be accommodated in mountain huts in shared (mixed) dormitories. For the rest of the trip you will be accommodated in hotels in the main towns and local inns and village pensions during the rest of the trip (twin share, all with private facilities). equipment required A comprehensive gear list is provided in the pre departure information supplied on booking. luggage On the 4 day Mt Olympus trek you will need to carry all your personal gear for the 3 nights/4 days. We recommend a comfortable rucksack (40 50 litres) with padded straps and waist belt and internal frame. You may choose to pack your gear in a large daypack of appropriate capacity or you may take your regular rucksack (60/65L), and leave the remainder of gear not needed for your climb in your daypack at the foot of the mountain. Luggage transfers on Crete are by vehicle or ferry, however you will need to carry your own luggage for short distances.
