A thick sweater, a waterproof shell, gloves and good hiking shoes may come of good use on all our tours. We rent out hiking shoes and rain clothing for a small fee (1.000 ISK. per item), if needed just ask when you book the tour. All specific gear such as crampons and ice axes or other mountaineering equipment is always provided by Icelandic Mountain Guides. Departures: Departures dated in the brochure are guaranteed. Special tours for groups or private tours can be provided at any time upon request. Cancellation policy: Cancellation received more than 24 hours prior to departure are fully refunded. Cancellation received less than 24 hours prior to departure will be charged full price. Security: The Icelandic climate is rough and variable, so is the terrain. We therefore reserve the right to alter and modify our program at any time before or during the trip to ensure the safety of our clients and staff. 3 ICELANDIC MOUNTAIN GUIDES GLACIER WALK & HIKING TOURS Welcome Let us tell you a little bit about ourselves, who we are and why we do what we do. Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland s premier outdoor and adventure company. The company was established in 1994 by four young environmentalists and outdoor enthusiasts. They became pioneers in introducing the wonders of Icelandic nature to travellers from all over the world. Originally we started offering Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Sólheimajökull glacier. Hiking and other adventures soon followed. Glacier Walks have now become one of the most popular tourism activity in Iceland. Even though there are no technical requirements needed for our glacier walks, safety is a big issue when travelling on glaciers. Therefore all our guides go through a strict training program to make sure you enjoy your adventure in a fun but safe way. From the beginning our aim has been to offer adventures for everyone. We wish you a pleasant stay in Iceland and welcome you to experience the wonders of Iceland with us. Our Guides Icelandic Mountain Guides is proud to be an award winning company as well as a leader for staff training in Icelandic tourism. We have over 20 years of experience in educating, entertaining and ensuring the safety of our guests. This applies to the Greenland Ice cap, the summit of Antarctica and everywhere in between. The pinnacle of our educational program is the 27 days of direct training and exams our glacier guides go through from the time they are hired until they achieve the full requirements for an IMG Mountain Guide. Our award winning training program is based on safety and training standards from New Zealand. In addition to training courses, our guides work over 100 days under direct and indirect supervision and are required to advance to a certain standard in their personal mountaineering. Most of our guides will have completed an eight day Wilderness First Responder first aid course and have received advanced training from working with the elite units of the Icelandic rescue teams. Directions to Sólheimajökull glacier: Driving time: From Reykjavík: 2h30. From Vík: 45 min. From the West (Reykjavík): 6 km after Skógar you turn left (just after the bridge) onto road 221. Follow the road for about 5 km to the Icelandic Mountain Guides location. (Expect about 15 min. for this part). From the East (Vík): 3 km after you pass road 222, you turn right (just before the bridge) onto road 221 and then follow that road for about 5 km to the Icelandic Mountain Guides location. 9 Fimmvörðuháls Volcano Hike IMG17 ACTIVE 8-10 HRS TOTAL DISTANCE HEIGHT GAIN LEVEL 25 KM (15.5 MI) OVER 1000 M (3280 FT) DEMANDING From Skógar to Þórsmörk - Hiking Day Tour The Fimmvörðuháls pass from Skógar to Þórsmörk is one of Iceland s most popular hiking routes. The trail takes us up from Skógar, along Skógá River and its many waterfalls.we head up between the two glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, to the recently formed lava and the new craters Magni and Móði. Here the fresh lava is still steaming under the surface and the heat of the lava can still be felt. Heading down from the craters to the magnificent Þórsmörk glacier valley, we continue to enjoy more geological features as well as some amazing views over the highlands of Iceland and the surrounding glaciers. After a great but demanding day we leave the fairytale landscape of Þórsmörk and head back to Skógar on the bus. Once in a lifetime experience for all hikers and nature enthusiasts! Equipment list and further information: Food: This is a long day so make sure you bring enough food for lunch, dinner and in-between meals like energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits for example. A 1 ltr. water bottle is also mandatory but energy drinks are optional. There are NO shops on the way so make sure you come prepared Shoes: Hiking shoes appropriate for hiking and trekking in rough terrains and snow. Clothing: Goretex shell or equally waterproof jacket and pants, hiking pants (not jeans), warm sweater and suitable first layer (not cotton), hat and gloves and extra pair of dry clothing may be appreciated after the tour. Note you have to carry everything on your back. Weather: The weather can change rapidly on the Fimmvörðuháls route so make sure that you are well prepared for any weather and don t rely on the current weather or the forecast. Fitness level: The hike is very demanding with elevation gain over 1000 m (3280 ft) and total distance of 25 km (15.5 mi) that we cover in about 8-10 hours. There, one of our experienced glacier guides will lead you safely through the glacial wonderland of ridges, crevasses and ice formations. Next, the tour continues to Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon where we will take a ride on a Zodiac Adventure Cruise, sailing between the icebergs of all shapes and sizes, floating around the clear blue water. After the Zodiac experience we continue east to the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where we continue exploring the landscape sculpted and dominated by the glaciers. 18 The Summits of Skaftafell DURATION HRS TOTAL DISTANCE 22 KM (14 MI) HEIGHT GAIN M (6500 FT) LEVEL STRENUOUS Icelandic Mountain guides offers scheduled hikes to two of the most impressive summits in Skaftafell, Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland s highest peak and Hrútsfjallstindar peaks. No special technical skills are required for the hikes but they are very physically challenging. To maintain the Icelandic Mountain Guides standards of quality, safety and customer service there will only be a maximum of 6 guests per guide on either of the climbs. Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland's highest Summit IMG25 The ascent of the highest mountain in Iceland, Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 m / 6921 ft) is a once in a lifetime must for outdoor enthusiasts. This unforgettable climb has breathtaking panoramic view stretching over the rugged outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull glacier and over the vast sandy plains of the glaciated rivers below. Duration: hrs.
