From Caldaro, we ll follow the renowned system of bike paths for which, the great Italian cycling champion, Francesco Moser is largely responsible. The sophisticated bike path system takes seamlessly and safely into the bustling city of Bolzano. This 4-star Parkhotel Laurin is known as one of Europe s best establishments. It has been an elegant abode for international guests and a vibrant venue for refined entertainment. With time Hotel Laurin has been restored and restructured with great sensibility and flair. This entire area is an outdoor WW1 museum as it is the site where major battles were fought. Today we experience the landscape s inherent peace and tranquility mixed with the majesty of some of the worlds most beautiful mountains. Here also you will experience an unforgettable feeling as you become a part of the international cycling spirit that one shares as they reach the summits of the climbs. Our descent into Cortina is blissful. The gracious Menardi family has owned this establishment for a century and a half. Elegantly furnished with incredible antiques. Beautiful grounds, fabulous dinner and breakfast. Impeccable and friendly service. Old World bar. 5 minute walk into town. Ciclismo Classico info@ciclismoclassico.com 5
6 DAY 8 REST DAY / TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO HIKE Terrain - Trekking at the Cime di Lavaredo Hotel - See Day 7 Although today is a designated rest day, we have planned an outing to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Cortina is often described as the Aspen of Italy, though its history is much older. Cortina hosted the Olympic Games in the 60s and continues to thrive as a mecca for all mountain sports enthusiasts, as well as also being known as one of the worlds glitziest mountain towns. At the hotel you will get a chance to practice speaking Ladino, (the local dialect) during dinner on your own. There are many options from country mountain pizzeria and pubs, to haute cuisine and Michelin-starred restaurants. DAY 9 NEW! CORTINA TO LIENZ Daily Mileage - 53 miles Riding Terrain - Passo Sant Antonio and bicycle paths in the Val Pusteria Hotel - Grand Hotel Location: Lienz en/ DAY 10 LIENZ TO ZELL AM SEE Daily Mileage - 58 miles Riding Terrain - Elevation gain 8,038 ft; today is a big ride with one major climb, the Grossglockner; 6,286 ft in 32 mi Hotel - Grand Hotel Location: Zell am See at/en/metanavigation/home/ The first 15 miles we climb over Passo Tre Croce, to the scenic tranquility of Lago Misurina, and continue skirting around the base of the imposing and spectacular Monte Cristallo through the Ampezzo Dolomites to Dobbiaco. We ll follow a beautifully maintained system of bicycle paths through the wide Pusteria Valley all the way from Dobbiaco, passing the Italian/Austrian boarder, to the understated, city of Lienz, the capital of Eastern Tyrol. The quaint medieval city center of Lienz is a well restored pedestrian zone for shopping or an optimal place to chill with a nice aperitivo before a fantastic meal prepared for us by Michaela and her family. The extravagant 5-star Grand Hotel is a newly built hotel surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Gourmet cuisine and spacious spa await. We leave the Lienzer Dolomiten heading north through the valley next to the river Winklern, approaching the majestic Grossglockner. The highlight of the tour and possibly of many rides you ve done, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road takes us up to areas 8,202 ft above sea level, through majestic mountain scenery in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The effort is great but well worth the views at the top! After a long ascent, and a rest at top, we have a long descent to Zell am See, where we have a peaceful lake view and gaze back to the peaks we rode through. The 4-star Grand Hotel is a perfectly suited name for its grand style. On the shores of Lake Zell, this hotel feels a bit out of the Sound of Music with its gazebo and shimmering exterior. The rooms are large with views of the lake and mountains. The patio where you can enjoy pints of Austrian beer and local specialties wraps around the hotel. Paddleboats for rent, free Wi-Fi. After lunch, a long descent into Mulbach, then one last climb to Pfarwerfen and then down to Werfen. Obauer is world-renowned for its cuisine. Brothers Rudolf and Karl Obauer (see their silhouettes in the restaurant s logo) will prepare an unforgettable dinner for us, an opportunity for us to celebrate our journey thus far. A lovely bike path takes you all the way to Mozart Platz through farmland and tiny villages. Get those Sound of Music tunes in your head; this is the land of Maria Von Trapp and Mozart!
